33. Ultra-Short Fiber Bragg Grating Used for Spectral Analysis of Guided Light in Single-Mode Fibers

Abstract

An ultra-short fiber Bragg grating with a grating length of 0.2 mm and constant grating period (uniform FBG) is proposed as an integrated dispersive element for spectral analysis in a single-mode glass fiber. This dispersive element is used to set up a fiber optical spectrometer that demonstrated an average spectral resolving power of 825, a pixel resolution of 0.02 nm/pixel, and a 40 nm bandwidth covering the 810–850 nm wavelength range. Furthermore, the dependence of this dispersive element on light polarization was examined, which induces a reduction in the wavelength accuracy up to ±0.05 nm. Finally, the investigated spectrometer to function well as a part of a readout device for fiber Bragg grating sensors is presented. Short uniform Bragg gratings as dispersive elements allow the manufacturing of miniaturized, compact spectrometers without additional focusing components between the FBG and detector.

36. The impact of bladder problems on well-being in multiple sclerosis – A cross-sectional study.

Abstract

• Bladder problems affect well-being in patients with multiple sclerosis. • Patients report wanting help with bladder management, emphasizing an unmet need. • Attempting self-management instead of receiving medical care affects well-being. • Results show real-life patient insights on bladder problems in multiple sclerosis. • More awareness of the impact on bladder problems in multiple sclerosis is needed. Persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) frequently suffer from bladder problems that are not identified and managed optimally, reducing quality of life and increasing risk of health consequences. This study aimed to investigate associations between bladder problems and well-being of pwMS. The study included 1872 pwMS from France, Germany, Italy, and the UK self-reporting on demographics, MS status, bladder problems and management, and well-being. Logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate associations with self-reported well-being. Population mean age was 51 years and 79 % were women. Among pwMS, 55 % reported bladder problems indicating overactive bladder (OAB), and 40 % reported self-experienced urinary retention. Self-management of bladder problems was reported by 32 %, 33 % were yet to have problem resolution, and 45 % reported a wish to receive bladder management help. Additionally, 35 % of pwMS reported that bladder problem onset preceded awareness of a link to MS. OAB, problem self-management, and urinary complications were significantly associated with lower well-being. Bladder problems affect pwMS across disease subtypes and many attempt self-management. Consequently, pwMS with bladder problems are more likely to experience lower well-being, suggesting an unmet need. Abstract

Cladding waveguide fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) provide a compact and simple solution for fiber shape sensing. The shape sensing accuracy is limited by birefringence, which is induced by bending and the non-isotropic FBG structure (written by femtosecond laser point-by-point technique). An algorithm based on an artificial neural network for fiber shape sensing is demonstrated, which enables increased accuracy, better robustness, and less time latency. This algorithm shows great potential in the application of high-accuracy real-time fiber shape measurements.

Abstract

Increasing investments in resource efficiency is considered essential for transitioning towards a sustainable model of economic growth. This article presents evidence on the complex incentives, trade-offs, and challenges associated with the economics and politics of resource efficiency investments, especially in light of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. By synthesising and evaluating a wide range of empirical evidence, practitioners’ insights, and policy perspectives, this article carefully examines the role of resource efficiency in reconciling environmental and economic objectives. It makes particular reference to the investment barriers and transitional implications of moving economies towards more circular and resource efficient pathways. In doing so, it provides a policy-oriented guide and toolbox to help overcome barriers, unlock the economic potential of resource efficiency, and highlight the challenges associated with the resource transition. Overall, this article brings together evidence, aiming to further develop and propose new strategies for improving the efficient use of natural resources to advance the sustainable development agenda. 45. MS bladder check tool: Development and validation of a patient awareness tool to facilitate timely management of lower urinary tract dysfunction due to multiple sclerosis.

Abstract

Lower urinary tract dysfunction impacts quality of life of people with MS; often, symptoms are 'lived with' or deprioritised by healthcare providers (HCPs). Consequently, patients must be given the skills they need to become confident in managing their illness and enhance their involvement in the process. To develop and validate a self-assessment tool to help people with MS become more aware of their bladder symptoms and prompt contact with their HCP to facilitate timely management and specialist referral, if required. The 'MS bladder check tool' was developed by a multidisciplinary panel of specialist advisors. Consensus meetings and pilot testing were conducted to design and evolve the tool into a series of nine questions, using population-appropriate language, and covering all aspects of bladder dysfunction in MS. The tool was then validated by an international, multidisciplinary team of experts. Validity was rated 'excellent' for all questions indicating that the MS bladder check tool is an appropriate method of highlighting bladder problems in people with MS. The MS bladder check tool is simple, easy-to-use, and empowers patients to take charge of their urinary tract health, aiming to improve the management of MS and, ultimately, patient quality of life.
