Abstract

Research of the nonlinear optical characteristics of transition metal dichalcogenides in the presence of photoactive particles, plasmonic nanocavities, waveguides, and metamaterials is still in its early stages. This investigation delves into the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from laser induced plasma of MoS2 nanosheets in the presence of semiconductor photoactive medium such as CdSe and CdSe/V2O5 core/shell quantum dots. Our comprehensive findings shed light on the counteractive coupling impact of both bare and passivated quantum dots on MoS2 nanosheets, as evidenced by the emission of higher-order harmonics. Significantly, the intensity of harmonics and their cut-off were notably enhanced in the MoS2-CdSe and MoS2-V-CdSe configurations compared to pristine MoS2 nanosheets. Abstract

The studies of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) coupled with photoactive particles, plasmonic nanocavities, waveguides, and metamaterials remain in their infancy. This study investigates the third-order NLO properties of MoS$_2$ nanosheets in the presence of a semiconductor photoactive medium. Our extensive studies and the obtained results reveal the counteractive coupling effect of bare and passivated quantum dots on the MoS$_2$ nanosheet, as made evident by the analysis of the NLO processes. The enhanced NLO properties of MoS$_2$ nanosheets functionalized with CdSe and CdSe-V2O5 quantum dots are helpful for applications as saturable absorbers in laser applications and the emission of coherent short-wavelength radiation. The multiphoton-excitation resonance energy transfer mechanism exploiting remote dipole dipole coupling, and ultrafast charge transfer pathways emerges as another plausible way to alter the NLO properties in TMDs., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Bismuth telluride nanoparticles (NPs) attract attention due to the growth of sensitivity of the Bi2Te3 NPs-containing registrars in the near- and mid-infrared ranges. We describe the synthesis and characterization of these structures and analyze the low-order nonlinear optical properties of the colloidal suspensions and thin films containing Bi2Te3 NPs using 1064 and 532 nm, 10 ns pulses. Colloidal Bi2Te3 NPs demonstrate saturable absorption and positive nonlinear refraction (saturation intensity 7 × 108 W cm−2, nonlinear absorption coefficient β SA = −7 × 10−8 cm W−1, nonlinear refractive index γ = 9 × 10−12 cm2 W−1), while at stronger excitation by 532 nm, 10 ns pulses the reverse saturable absorption dominates over other nonlinear optical processes. We achieved significant growth of the nonlinear optical parameters of the thin films containing these NPs (film thickness l = 60 nm, β SA = −1.2 × 10−4 cm W−1, γ = 5 × 10−7 cm2 W−1 in the case of 532 nm probe radiation and β = −5 × 10−5 cm W−1, γ = 6 × 10−8 cm2 W−1 in the case of 1064 nm probe radiation) compared with colloidal Bi2Te3 NPs and discuss the observed peculiarities of the nonlinear response of Bi2Te3 nanostructures.

Abstract

Nonlinear optical characteristics of chemically prepared silver selenide (Ag2Se, 3.7 nm) and lead selenide (PbSe, 6.3 nm) colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are investigated using the 1030 nm femtosecond pulses. Ag2Se QDs demonstrated two-photon absorption followed by saturable absorption. PbSe QDs initially showed the saturable absorption at small intensities of 1030 nm probe pulses, followed by reverse saturable absorption at stronger excitation. The difference in the positive nonlinear optical absorption mechanisms in these two QD colloids is attributed to their different bandgaps. The studied QD colloids exhibited the Kerr-induced positive nonlinear refraction. Transient absorption studies of the QDs showed that photoexcitation creates a hot exciton that forms band-edge exciton within 1.2 ps after excitation. Most of the electron-hole pairs further recombine through band-to-band recombination with a time constant of 1490 ps. Furthermore, the results from the transient absorption studies indicate the contribution of trap-assisted recombination occurs on a time scale exceeding that of the experimental time window. Abstract

The molecular laser-induced plasma (LIP) produced during the ablation of silver sulfide (Ag2S) was used as a medium for high-order harmonic generation in the extreme ultraviolet range. The role of LIP formation, the plasma components, and the geometry of plasma in the harmonic conversion efficiency was analyzed. We also analyzed the influence of the driving pulses (chirp, single-color pump, two-color pump, and delay between heating and converting pulses) on the harmonic yield in Ag2S LIP. The application of molecular plasma was compared with the application of atomic plasma, which comprised similar metallic elements (Ag) as well as other metal LIPs. The harmonics from the Ag2S LIP were 4 to 10 times stronger than those from the Ag LIP. The harmonics up to the 59th order were achieved under the optimal conditions for the molecular plasma. Abstract

We demonstrated the linear, radial, and annular ripple formation on the surface of GaAs. The formation of linear ripples was optimized by the number of shots and the fluence of 30 ps, 532 nm pulses. The radial and annular nanoripples were produced under the ablation using doughnut-like beams possessing azimuthal and radial polarizations, respectively. We compare the ripples and grooves formed by a linearly polarized Gaussian beam relative to an annular vector beam. The joint overlap of sub-wavelength grooves with ripples formed by azimuthally and radially polarized beams was reported. The conditions under which the shape of radial and ring-like nano- or micro-relief on the GaAs surface can be modified by modulating the polarization of laser pulse were determined. Abstract

Thin films containing small-sized quantum dots (QDs) and nanoparticles have shown strong optical nonlinearities caused by the confinement effect. Here, we report the study of third-order optical nonlinearities of silver sulfide (Ag2S) QD thin films using 800 and 400 nm, 30 fs pulses. The absorption spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy are used to characterize the synthesized 80 and 500 nm Ag2S QD films. The giant enhancement of nonlinearities is observed up to three to six orders of magnitude larger compared to those for the bulk and liquid Ag2S samples. We also demonstrate the efficient high-order harmonic generation in the plasmas produced during ablation of the Ag2S QD thin films. The analysis of the dynamics of the QD-containing plasma spreading allowed optimization of the delay between the heating and the driving pulses for an enhancement of harmonics conversion efficiency.
