1. Radiative decays of X(3872) discriminate between the molecular and compact interpretations

Abstract

Radiative decays X --> psi(1S) + gamma and X --> psi(2S) + gamma might be expected to have a ratio of branching fractions following the phase space volumes ratio. However data suggest the opposite, indicating a value for R=B(X --> psi^prime + gamma) / B(X --> psi +gamma) consistently larger than one. In this paper we present a calculation of R for both a compact Born-Oppenheimer cc-bar q-qbar state and a DD^* molecule. In the former case R~1 or larger is found, a value to be confronted with forthcoming high statistics data analyses. In the molecular picture, with D and D^* mesons described by the universal wave function used by Voloshin, Braaten and Kusunoki, we find that R would be of order 10^-2. A more precise experimental measure would be extremely helpful in clarifying the true nature of the X(3872)., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. Abstract

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We consider the possibility that the neutral-current $B$ anomalies are due to radiative corrections generated by Yukawa interactions of quarks and leptons with new vector-like quark and lepton electroweak doublets and new Standard Model singlet scalars. We show that the restricted interactions needed can result from an underlying Abelian family symmetry and that the same symmetry can give rise to an acceptable pattern of quark and charged lepton masses and mixings, providing a bridge between the non-universality observed in the B-sector and that of the fermion mass matrices. We construct two simple models, one with a single singlet scalar in which the flavour changing comes from quark and lepton mixing and one with an additional scalar in which the flavour changing can come from both fermion and scalar mixing. We show that for the case the new quarks are much heavier than the new leptons and scalars the $B$ anomalies can be due to box diagrams with couplings in the perturbative regime consistent with the bounds coming from $B_s- \bar B_s$, $K- \bar K$ and $D- \bar D$ mixing as well as other lepton family number violating processes. The new states can be dark matter candidates and, in the two scalar model with a light scalar of O(60) GeV and vector-like lepton of O(100) GeV, there can be a simultaneous explanation of the B-anomalies, the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the dark matter abundance., Comment: Replacement contains few additional references

Abstract

The gauging of the lepton flavour group is considered in the Standard Model context and in its extension with three right-handed neutrinos. The anomaly cancellation conditions lead to a Seesaw mechanism as underlying dynamics for all leptons; requiring in addition a phenomenologically viable setup leads to Majorana masses for the neutral sector: the type I Seesaw Lagrangian in the Standard Model case and the inverse Seesaw in the extended model. Within the minimal extension of the scalar sector, the Yukawa couplings are promoted to scalar fields in the bifundamental of the flavour group. 10. Towards the discovery of new physics with lepton-universality ratios of b →sℓℓ decays

Abstract

Tests of lepton-universality as rate ratios in b→sℓℓ transitions can be predicted very accurately in the Standard Model. The deficits with respect to expectations reported by the LHCb experiment in muon-To-electron ratios of the B→K(∗)ℓℓ decay rates thus point to genuine manifestations of lepton nonuniversal new physics. In this paper, we analyze these measurements in the context of effective field theory. First, we discuss the interplay of the different operators in RK and RK∗ and provide predictions for RK∗ in the Standard Model and in new-physics scenarios that can explain RK. We also provide approximate numerical formulas for these observables in bins of interest as functions of the relevant Wilson coefficients. Secondly, we perform frequentist fits to RK and RK∗. The Standard Model disagrees with these measurements at 3.7σ significance. We find excellent fits in scenarios with combinations of O9(10)ℓ=s γμbLℓγμ(γ5)ℓ operators, with pulls relative to the Standard Model in the region of 4σ. An important conclusion of our analysis is that a lepton-specific contribution to O10 is important to understand the data. Under the hypothesis that new-physics couples selectively to the muons, we also present fits to other b→sμμ data with a conservative error assessment and comment on more general scenarios. Finally, we discuss new lepton universality ratios that, if new physics is the origin of the observed discrepancy, should contribute to the statistically significant discovery of new physics in the near future.

Abstract

The gauging of the lepton flavour group is considered in the Standard Modelcontext and in its extension with three right-handed neutrinos. The anomalycancellation conditions lead to a Seesaw mechanism as underlying dynamics forall leptons; requiring in addition a phenomenologically viable setup leads toMajorana masses for the neutral sector: the type I Seesaw Lagrangian in theStandard Model case and the inverse Seesaw in the extended model. Within theminimal extension of the scalar sector, the Yukawa couplings are promoted toscalar fields in the bifundamental of the flavour group. The resultinglow-energy Yukawa couplings are proportional to inverse powers of the vacuumexpectation values of those scalars; the protection against flavour changingneutral currents differs from that of Minimal Flavor Violation. 12. Weak Decays of Excited B Mesons

Abstract

We investigate the decays of the excited (bq[over ¯]) mesons as probes of the short-distance structure of the weak ΔB=1 transitions. These states are unstable under the electromagnetic or strong interactions, although their widths are typically suppressed by phase space. Compared to the pseudoscalar B meson, the purely leptonic decays of the vector B^{*} are not chirally suppressed and are sensitive to different combinations of the underlying weak effective operators. An interesting example is B_{s}^{*}→ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}, which has a rate that can be accurately predicted in the standard model. The branching fraction is B∼10^{-11}, irrespective of the lepton flavor and where the main uncertainty stems from the unmeasured and theoretically not well known B_{s}^{*} width. We discuss the prospects for producing this decay mode at the LHC and explore the possibility of measuring the B_{s}^{*}→ℓℓ amplitude, instead, through scattering experiments at the B_{s}^{*} resonance peak.

Abstract

The model-independent parametrization for exclusive hadronic form factors commonly used for semileptonic decays is generalized to allow for the inclusion of above-threshold resonant poles of known mass and width. We discuss the interpretation of such poles, particularly with respect to the analytic structure of the relevant two-point Green's function in which they reside. Their presence has a remarkably small effect on the parametrization, as we show explicitly for the case of D→πe+νe.

Abstract

Abstract: We derive the decay rate of an unstable phase of a quantum field theory in the presence of an impurity in the thin-wall approximation. This derivation is based on the how the impurity changes the (flat spacetime) geometry relative to case of pure false vacuum. Two examples are given that show how to estimate some of the additional parameters that enter into this heterogeneous decay rate. This formalism is then applied to the Higgs vacuum of the Standard Model (SM), where baryonic matter acts as an impurity in the electroweak Higgs vacuum. We find that the probability for heterogeneous vacuum decay to occur is suppressed with respect to the homogeneous case. That is to say, the conclusions drawn from the homogeneous case are not modified by the inclusion of baryonic matter in the calculation. On the other hand, we show that Beyond the Standard Model physics with a characteristic scale comparable to the scale that governs the homogeneous decay rate in the SM, can in principle lead to an enhanced decay rate.

Abstract

Abstract: Anomalies in semileptonic B-meson decays present interesting patterns that might be revealing the shape of the new physics to come. Under the assumption that neutrino and charged lepton mass terms are the only sources of flavor violation and given the hierarchy between the two, we find that charged lepton universality violation without charged lepton flavor violation naturally arises. This can account for a deficit of B+ → K+μμ over B+ → K+ee decays with new physics coupled predominantly to muons and a new physics scale of a few TeV. A generic prediction of this scenario is a large enhacement of tauonic B decay rates that, in particular, could accommodate an excess in B → D(∗)τ ν. For the most part, the study is carried out in an effective field theory framework with an underlying SU(2)L × U(1)Y symmetry that emphasizes the model-independent correlations between low- and high-energy observables. As an example, a connection between B-decays and top physics is pointed out. To complement the discussion, all possible (spin 0 and 1) leptoquark models are matched to the low-energy field theory so that the effective analysis can be used to survey these candidates for new physics.

Abstract

We use the background-field method and the heat kernel to obtain all counterterms to two-loop order of conformally coupled multiflavor Pdbl3 theory in six spacetime dimensions, defined in curved spacetime and with spacetime-dependent couplings. We also include spacetime-dependent mass terms for completeness. We use these results to write a general expression for the trace anomaly. With the use of Weyl consistency conditions, we are able to show that the strong a-theorem for a certain natural candidate quantity a is violated in this theory and obtain a three-loop expression for the coefficient a of the Euler term in the anomaly.

Abstract

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for weakly interacting massive particles, while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

Abstract

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras., Comment: Report from Working Group 4 on the Physics of the HL-LHC, and Perspectives at the HE-LHC, 292 pages

23. Existence and construction of Galilean invariant z not equal 2 theories

Abstract

We prove a no-go theorem for the construction of a Galilean boost invariant and $z\neq2$ anisotropic scale invariant field theory with a finite dimensional basis of fields. Two point correlators in such theories, we show, grow unboundedly with spatial separation. Correlators of theories with an infinite dimensional basis of fields, for example, labeled by a continuous parameter, do not necessarily exhibit this bad behavior. Hence, such theories behave effectively as if in one extra dimension. Embedding the symmetry algebra into the conformal algebra of one higher dimension also reveals the existence of an internal continuous parameter. Consideration of isometries shows that the non-relativistic holographic picture assumes a canonical form, where the bulk gravitational theory lives in a space-time with one extra dimension. This can be contrasted with the original proposal by Balasubramanian and McGreevy, and by Son, where the metric of a $d+2$ dimensional space-time is proposed to be dual of a $d$ dimensional field theory. We provide explicit examples of theories living at fixed point with anisotropic scaling exponent $z=\frac{2\ell}{\ell+1}\,,\ell\in \mathbb{Z}$

Abstract

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras.

25. SU(3) Decay Amplitudes of Pentaquarks into Decuplet Baryons

Abstract

Evidence for the existence of exotic, pentaquark baryons was first found in the invariant mass spectrum of a baryon-meson pair, with the baryon in the octet of flavor SU(3). Exotic pentaquarks may also decay into members of the spin-3/2 baryon decuplet. We calculate relations between decay rates of the exotic pentaquark into a baryon decuplet and an octet of pseudoscalar mesons based on SU(3) flavor symmetry, including the leading flavor symmetry breaking term. We consider all possible representations for an exotic pentaquark, namely, that it belongs to either a \bar{10}, 27, or 35 representation of flavor SU(3). In addition, we use the approximate SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry of baryons to derive relations between the reduced matrix elements of our calculation and those of an existing analogous calculation for decays into the baryon octet. By comparing several decay rates of exotics into both octet and decuplet baryons, our results could be used to elucidate the SU(3) nature of pentaquarks.

Abstract

We first review some aspects of the determination of the sides and angles of the unitarity triangle. We pay particular attention to theory shortcomings, and present many alternative proposals for the determination of |Vub| (which at present is problematic). We then turn our attention to the more general question: What have we learned so far about flavor physics and where do we go from here? We argue that the aim of Flavor Physics should be to establish or rule out Minimal Flavor Violating interactions up to a scale of 10 TeV.

28. Towards the discovery of new physics with lepton-universality ratios of b -> sll decays

Abstract

Tests of lepton-universality as rate ratios in $b\to s \ell\ell$ transitions can be predicted very accurately in the Standard Model. The deficits with respect to expectations reported by the LHCb experiment in muon-to-electron ratios of the $B\to K^{(*)}\ell\ell$ decay rates thus point to genuine manifestations of lepton non-universal new physics. In this paper, we analyse these measurements in the context of effective field theory. First, we discuss the interplay of the different operators in $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ and provide predictions for $R_{K^*}$ in the Standard Model and in new-physics scenarios that can explain $R_K$. We also provide approximate numerical formulas for these observables in bins of interest as functions of the relevant Wilson coefficients. Secondly, we perform frequentist fits to $R_{K}$ and $R_{K^*}$. The SM disagrees with these measurements at $3.7\sigma$ significance. We find excellent fits in scenarios with combinations of $\mathcal O_{9(10)}^\ell=\bar s\gamma^\mu b_L~\ell\gamma_\mu(\gamma_5) \ell$ operators, with pulls relative to the Standard Model in the region of $4\sigma$. An important conclusion of our analysis is that a lepton-specific contribution to $\mathcal O_{10}$ is essential to understand the data. Under the hypothesis that new-physics couples selectively to the muons, we also present fits to other $b\to s\mu\mu$ data with a conservative error assessment, and comment on more general scenarios. Finally, we discuss new lepton universality ratios that, if new physics is the origin of the observed discrepancy, should contribute to the statistically significant discovery of new physics in the near future.

Abstract

We fit the unfolded data of $\bar{B}^0\rightarrow D^{*+} \ell \overline{\nu}$ from the Belle experiment, where $\ell \equiv e, \mu$, using a method independent of heavy quark symmetry to extrapolate to zero-recoil and extract the value of $|V_{cb}|$. This results in $|V_{cb}| = (41.9^{~+2.0}_{~-1.9})\times 10^{-3}$, which is robust to changes in the theoretical inputs and very consistent with the value extracted from inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays.

30. Lifetime of B-c(-) Mesons Constrains Explanations for Anomalies in B -> D-(*()) tau nu

Abstract

We investigate a new constraint on new-physics interpretations of the anomalies observed in B→D^{(*)}τν decays making use of the lifetime of the B_{c}^{-} meson. A constraint is obtained by demanding that the rate for B_{c}^{-}→τ^{-}ν[over ¯] does not exceed the fraction of the total width that is allowed by the calculation of the lifetime in the standard model. This leads to a very strong bound on new-physics scenarios involving scalar operators since they lift the slight, but not negligible, chiral suppression of the B_{c}^{-}→τ^{-}ν[over ¯] amplitude in the standard model. The new constraint renders a scalar interpretation of the enhancement measured in R_{D^{*}} implausible, including explanations implementing extra Higgs doublets or certain classes of leptoquarks. We also discuss the complementarity of R_{D^{(*)}} and a measurement of the longitudinal polarization of the τ in the B→D^{*}τν decay in light of our findings.

These lectures on flavor physics are an introduction to the subject. First lecture: We discuss the meaning of flavor and the importance of flavor physics in restricting extensions of the Standard Model (SM) of Electroweak interactions. We explain the origin of the KM matrix and how its elements are determined. We discuss FCNC and the GIM mechanism, followed by how a principle of Minimal Flavor Violation leads to SM extensions that are safe as far as FCNC are concerned even if the new physics comes in at low, TeVish scales. This is illustrated by the example of B radiative decays. Second lecture: We then turn our attention to CP-violation. We start by presenting neutral meson mixing. 33. Heat kernel and Weyl anomaly of Schrodinger invariant theory

Abstract

We propose a method inspired from discrete light cone quantization (DLCQ) to determine the heat kernel for a Schr\"odinger field theory (Galilean boost invariant with $z=2$ anisotropic scaling symmetry) living in $d+1$ dimensions, coupled to a curved Newton-Cartan background starting from a heat kernel of a relativistic conformal field theory ($z=1$) living in $d+2$ dimensions. We use this method to show the Schr\"odinger field theory of a complex scalar field cannot have any Weyl anomalies. To be precise, we show that the Weyl anomaly $\mathcal{A}^{G}_{d+1}$ for Schr\"odinger theory is related to the Weyl anomaly of a free relativistic scalar CFT $\mathcal{A}^{R}_{d+2}$ via $\mathcal{A}^{G}_{d+1}= 2\pi \delta (m) \mathcal{A}^{R}_{d+2}$ where $m$ is the charge of the scalar field under particle number symmetry. We provide further evidence of vanishing anomaly by evaluating Feynman diagrams in all orders of perturbation theory. We present an explicit calculation of the anomaly using a regulated Schr\"odinger operator, without using the null cone reduction technique. We generalise our method to show that a similar result holds for one time derivative theories with even $z>2$.

34. Baryon Number and Lepton Universality Violation in Leptoquark and Diquark Models

Abstract

We perform a systematic study of models involving leptoquarks and diquarks with masses well below the grand unification scale and demonstrate that a large class of them is excluded due to rapid proton decay. After singling out the few phenomenologically viable color triplet and sextet scenarios, we show that there exist only two leptoquark models which do not suffer from tree-level proton decay and which have the potential for explaining the recently discovered anomalies in B meson decays. Both of those models, however, contain dimension five operators contributing to proton decay and require a new symmetry forbidding them to emerge at a higher scale. This has a particularly nice realization for the model with the vector leptoquark $(3,1)_{2/3}$, which points to a specific extension of the Standard Model, namely the Pati-Salam unification model, where this leptoquark naturally arises as the new gauge boson. We explore this possibility in light of recent B physics measurements. Finally, we analyze also a vector diquark model, discussing its LHC phenomenology and showing that it has nontrivial predictions for neutron-antineutron oscillation experiments.

35. DirectDM: a tool for dark matter direct detection

Abstract

We provide a Mathematica package, DirectDM, that takes as input the Wilson coefficients of the relativistic effective theory describing the interactions of dark matter with quarks, gluons and photons, and matches it onto an effective theory describing the interactions of dark matter with neutrons and protons. The nonperturbative matching is performed at leading order in a chiral expansion. The one-loop QCD and QED renormalization-group evolution from the electroweak scale down to the hadronic scale, as well as finite corrections at the heavy quark thresholds are taken into account. We also provide an interface with the package DMFormFactor so that, starting from the relativistic effective theory, one can directly obtain the event rates for direct detection experiments.

36. Model-independent constraints on hadronic form factors with above-threshold poles

Abstract

Model-independent constraints on hadronic form factors, in particular those describing exclusive semileptonic decays, can be derived from the knowledge of field correlators calculated in perturbative QCD, using analyticity and unitarity. The location of poles corresponding to below-threshold resonances, i.e., stable states that cannot decay into a pair of hadrons from the crossed channel of the form factor, must be known a priori, and their effect, accounted for through the use of Blaschke factors, is to reduce the strength of the constraints in the semileptonic region. By contrast, above-threshold resonances appear as poles on unphysical Riemann sheets, and their presence does not affect the original model-independent constraints. We discuss the possibility that the above-threshold poles can provide indirect information on the form factors on the first Riemann sheet, either through information from their residues or by constraining the discontinuity function. The bounds on form factors can be improved by imposing, in an exact way, the additional information in the extremal problem. The semileptonic $K\to \pi\ell \nu$ and $D\to \pi\ell\nu$ decays are considered as illustrations.

We compute all of the one-loop corrections that are enhanced, $O(\lambda_i \lambda_j / 16 \pi^2)$, in the limit $s \gg |\lambda_i | v^2 \gg M_{W}^2$, $s \gg m_{12}^2$ to all the $2 \to 2$ longitudinal vector boson and Higgs boson scattering amplitudes in the $CP$-conserving two-Higgs doublet model with a softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. In the two simplified scenarios we study, the typical bound we find is $|\lambda_i(s)| \lessapprox 4$.

New physics effects in B decays are routinely modeled through operators invariant under the strong and electromagnetic gauge symmetries. Assuming the scale for new physics is well above the electroweak scale, we further require invariance under the full standard model gauge symmetry group. Retaining up to dimension-six operators, we unveil new constraints between different new physics operators that are assumed to be independent in the standard phenomenological analyses. Abstract

We discuss our recently proposed interpretation of the discrepancy between the bottle and beam neutron lifetime experiments as a sign of a dark sector. The difference between the outcomes of the two types of measurements is explained by the existence of a neutron dark decay channel with a branching fraction 1%. Phenomenologically consistent particle physics models for the neutron dark decay can be constructed and they involve a strongly self-interacting dark sector. We elaborate on the theoretical developments around this idea and describe the efforts undertaken to verify it experimentally.

Abstract

Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We identify new search strategies for under-explored signatures, and demonstrate that the improved sensitivities from current and next-generation experiments could lead to a qualitative leap in the exploration of light dark sectors., (© 2022 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

44. Neutron Star Stability in Light of the Neutron Decay Anomaly.

Abstract

A recent proposal suggests that experimental discrepancies on the lifetime of neutrons can be resolved if neutrons decay to dark matter. At the same time it has been demonstrated that such a decay mode would soften the nuclear equation of the state resulting in neutron stars with a maximum mass much below currently observed ones. In this Letter, we demonstrate that appropriate dark matter-baryon interactions can accommodate neutron stars with mass above two solar masses. We compare this stabilization mechanism to one based on dark matter self-interactions, finding that it is less sensitive to the details of the nuclear equation of state. We present a simple microscopic model realization of this mechanism.

Abstract

There is a long-standing discrepancy between the neutron lifetime measured in beam and bottle experiments. We propose to explain this anomaly by a dark decay channel for the neutron, involving one or more dark sector particles in the final state. If any of these particles are stable, they can be the dark matter. We construct representative particle physics models consistent with all experimental constraints.

46. SU(5) Unification without Proton Decay.

Abstract

We construct a four-dimensional SU(5) grand unified theory in which the proton is stable. The standard model leptons reside in the 5 and 10 irreps of SU(5), whereas the quarks live in the 40 and 50 irreps. The SU(5) gauge symmetry is broken by the vacuum expectation values of the scalar 24 and 75 irreps. All fields that are not part of the standard model are heavy. Stability of the proton requires three relations between the parameters of the model to hold. However, abandoning the requirement of absolute proton stability, the model fulfills current experimental constraints without fine-tuning.

47. Lifetime of B_{c}^{-} Mesons Constrains Explanations for Anomalies in B→D^{(*)}τν.

Abstract

We investigate a new constraint on new-physics interpretations of the anomalies observed in B→D^{(*)}τν decays making use of the lifetime of the B_{c}^{-} meson. A constraint is obtained by demanding that the rate for B_{c}^{-}→τ^{-}ν[over ¯] does not exceed the fraction of the total width that is allowed by the calculation of the lifetime in the standard model. This leads to a very strong bound on new-physics scenarios involving scalar operators since they lift the slight, but not negligible, chiral suppression of the B_{c}^{-}→τ^{-}ν[over ¯] amplitude in the standard model. The new constraint renders a scalar interpretation of the enhancement measured in R_{D^{*}} implausible, including explanations implementing extra Higgs doublets or certain classes of leptoquarks. We also discuss the complementarity of R_{D^{(*)}} and a measurement of the longitudinal polarization of the τ in the B→D^{*}τν decay in light of our findings.

48. Challenge to the a theorem in six dimensions.

Abstract

The possibility of a strong a theorem in six dimensions is examined in multiflavor ϕ^{3} theory. Contrary to the case in two and four dimensions, we find that, in perturbation theory, the relevant quantity a[over ˜] increases monotonically along flows away from the trivial fixed point. a[over ˜] is a natural extension of the coefficient a of the Euler term in the trace anomaly, and it arises in any even spacetime dimension from an analysis based on Weyl consistency conditions. We also obtain the anomalous dimensions and beta functions of multiflavor ϕ^{3} theory to two loops. Our results suggest that some new intuition about the a theorem is in order.
