Abstract

Solid-state reactions of Polycarbonate are quite complex and totally different to reactions in solution state. As various reaction pathways with different kinetics may occur, the in-depth characterization of molecular processes is not only of technological importance but also essential for understanding the reactive processing of Polycarbonate. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a molecular sensitive technique to characterize the formation of functional groups as well as their intermolecular and intramolecular interaction. The formation of low amounts of Bisphenol-A as a side product leads to the formation of mixed phases containing both, PC and Bisphenol-A. Bisphenol-A is soluble in Polycarbonate and serves as a plasticizer for the Polycarbonate phase. An intermolecular interaction between both compounds is observed. The maximum reduction of glass transition temperature of about 100 K is determined for Polycarbonate mixed with different amounts of Bisphenol-A. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this study, the influence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on β‐isotactic polypropylene (iPP) formation in preshear injection‐molded iPP/MWCNT nanocomposites is investigated layer by layer by wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). WAXD results suggest that in preshear injection‐molded pure iPP, β‐iPP exists in not only the shear region, but also the core region as a result of preshear‐induced nucleation. The addition of MWCNT can inhibit the β‐iPP formation. As the depth away from the specimen surface is decreased, the inhibiting effect is decreased. The reason responsible for that is given as follows: (1) with the addition of MWCNT, extra nuclei are induced during preshear. Both MWCNT and extra nuclei serve as α‐iPP nucleation point. Therefore, the formation of β‐iPP is restricted; (2) the cooling rate gradient is widely accepted to exist in the injection molded sample. A larger cooling rate at a smaller depth will give rise to a lower α‐iPP crystallization onset temperature and a lower nucleation efficiency of MWCNT. Since that β‐iPP grows only in the temperature range of 105°C‐140°C, the inhibiting effect of MWCNT on β‐iPP becomes weaker as the depth is decreased. POLYM. Abstract

Abstract: Polyesters with 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxy‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide‐containing comonomers are synthesized aiming to improve the flame retardancy of aliphatic polyesters such as poly(butylene succinate) and poly(butylene sebacate). The influence of the chemical structure on the thermal decomposition and pyrolysis is examined using a combination of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), TGA‐Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, pyrolysis‐gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and microscale combustion flow calorimetry. Thermal decomposition pathways are derived and used to select suitable candidates as flame retardants for PBS. The fire behavior of the selected polymers is evaluated by forced‐flaming combustion in a cone calorimeter. The materials show two modes of action for flame retardancy: strong flame inhibition due to the release of a variety of molecules combined with charring in the solid state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

25. Methacrylate Copolymers with Liquid Crystalline Side Chains for Organic Gate Dielectric Applications

Abstract

Polymers for all-organic field-effect transistors are under development to cope with the increasing demand for novel materials for organic electronics. Besides the semiconductor, the dielectric layer determines the efficiency of the final device. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a frequently used dielectric. In this work, the chemical structure of this material was stepwise altered by incorporation of cross-linkable and/or self-organizing comonomers to improve the chemical stability and the dielectric properties. Different types of cross-linking methods were used to prevent dissolution, swelling or intermixing of the dielectric e.g. during formation processes of top electrodes or semiconducting layers. Self-organizing comonomers were expected to influence the dielectric/semiconductor interface, and moreover, to enhance the chemical resistance of the dielectric. Random copolymers were obtained by free radical and reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. With 6-[4-(4′-cyanophenyl)phenoxy]alkyl side chains having hexyl or octyl spacer, thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) behavior and nanophase separation into smectic layers was observed, while copolymerization with methyl methacrylate induced molecular disorder. In addition to chemical, thermal and structural properties, electrical characteristics like breakdown field strength (EBD) and relative permittivity (k) were determined. The dielectric films were studied in metal–insulator–metal setups. EBDappeared to be strongly dependent on the type of electrode used and especially the ink formulation. Cross-linking of PMMA yielded an increase in EBDup to 4.0 MV/cm with Ag and 5.7 MV/cm with PEDOT:PSS electrodes because of the increased solvent resistance. The LC side chains reduce the ability for cross-linking resulting in decreased breakdown field strengths.
