2. Evaluation of the Relationship Between Nutrition Literacy and Health Literacy in Adults

Abstract

Aim: This study aims to determine the relationship between nutrition literacy (NL) and health literacy (HL) of adults. Subjects and Method: This cross-sectional study included 450 individuals aged 18-65 years residing in Antalya. A questionnaire including socio-demographic characteristics, health status, nutritional habits, Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32, and the Evaluation Instrument of Nutrition Literacy on Adults was applied to the subjects by face-to-face interview technique and anthropometric measurements were taken. Results: The mean age of the participants was 34.3±13.14 years. While more than half of them had inadequate (14.2%) and problematic-limited HL (37.6%), 87.3% of them were found to have adequate NL. Abstract

The 'normal' length of the small intestine ranges from 320 to 800 cm. short bowel syndrome is defined as the small bowel length less than 200 cm. Short bowel syndrome is a clinical manifestation that occurs mainly after anatomical and / or functional loss of small intestine and presents with diarrhea, steatorrhea, weight loss, malnutrition, malabsorption, dehydration. Therefore, appropriate nutritional therapy should be planned, and lost fluid and electrolytes should be replaced. A nutritional plan should be drawn up considering other factors affecting the disease and the type of surgical procedure. The main goal of treatment in short bowel syndrome is to achieve bowel adaptation. Nutritional interventions such as glutamine, growth hormone, fish oil and probiotics-prebiotics have recently been investigated for intestinal adaptation. The aim of this review is to examine medical nutrition therapy in short bowel syndrome and nutritional interventions in bowel adaptation.

5. Comparison of Eating Attitudes and the Susceptibility to Orthorexia Nervosa of Students in Health-Related Fields and Those in Other Fields

Abstract

Background: This study was conducted to evaluate the eating attitudes and behaviors, the susceptibility to Orthorexia nervosa and obsessive attitudes of the students who were taking undergraduate education in the field of health and the students who were not taking undergraduate education in the field of health at the time of the study. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Akdeniz University with randomly selected 304 students who were studying in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing Law and Communication, Antalya, Turkey. Data, socio-demographic features of the students were collected using the questionnaire form consisting of Eating Attitude Test (EAT-40), The Orthorexia Nervosa Evaluation Scale (ORTO-15) and Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI). Results: 61.5% of the students were female. 51.9% of them were studying in the health field, while 48.1% of them were studying in other fields. At the beginning of the study, the use of ORTO-15 scale was planned to evaluate the students' orthorexic behaviors, but they were evaluated with the ORTO-11 scale because of the validity and resusceptibility of the ORTO-15 scale were found as too low. The incidence of orthorexic behavior was higher in students who were not studying in the field of health for both ORTO-15 and ORTO-11 scales. Conclusion: It is necessary to acquire healthy eating habits for university students by practical nutrition education given informal and non-formal education institutions, thus their quality of life can be increased.
