1. Improving fruit set and yield of tissue cultured date palm cv. Berhi by using a combined pollination technique

Abstract

Tissue-cultured (TC) date palms produce no fruit or low yield due to abnormal fruit setting. To improve the yield of TC ‘Berhi’ palms, trees were pollinated using five pollen sources (Gantar, Ghannami, Mazafati, Zahedi, and Jarvis). The experiment was carried out in three replications for two successive years in a randomized complete blocks design. The fruit set, the fruit and seed physical traits at the Khalal stage, bunch weight at the Tamar and Khalal stages, ripeness of Tamar bunch, and the fruit quality at both Khalal and Tamar stages were measured and monitored. Year factor significantly affected the fruit set and the fruit and seed characteristics. Pollen sources affected fruit set and some seed characteristics significantly. Zahedi+Jarvis pollen treatment that induced 50% normal fruit set and the highest ratio of pulp to seed was found superior. It was also a top treatment in Khalal’s bunch weight (3.11 Kg). Zahedi+Gantar treatment was realized superior in Tamar’s bunch weight (6.00 Kg). Ghannami, Jarvis+Ghannami, and Zahedi+Jarvis treatments produced Khalal’s fruits with higher quality indices but Zahedi+Jarvis treatment was superior in fruit quality at the Tamar stage. Overall, the combined application of Zahedi and Jarvis pollens yielded the most desired outcomes.

Abstract

We conducted this study to determine the chronic effects of Azadirachtin on growth parameters, survival and gill morphology of grass carp [Ctenopharyngodon idella (C. idella)] with an average weight of 11.09±2.3g. We equally distributed 120 fish between three treatments and a control group, with three replicates each. Sublethal concentrations of poison, 0.073 (10% LC50), 0.15 (20% LC50), 0.22 ppm (30% LC50) were selected. Fish were exposed to these doses for 28 days. Increasing doses of Azadirachtin did not affect growth parameters and survival (P>0.05). During the test, we observed fish behavior patterns of irregular swimming, rotation, reaction increased response versus stimulus exterior, solitary and imbalance, histology, epithelial uplifting (swelling), hyperplasia, fusion of gill lamellae and necrosis of gill epithelial cells. The results showed that although the sublethal dose of Azadirachtin over a short time did not affect growth and survival of C. idella but brought about abnormal behavior in fish. There was increased gill tissue destruction with increased poison levels which showed that it could be effective on long duration of exposure.

Abstract

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria containing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase enzyme reduce the level of stress, ethylene and stimulate plant growth under various biotic and abiotic stress conditions. The present study aims at characterizing efficient salt-tolerant, ACC deaminase containing Pseudomonas fluorescens strains with plant growth-promoting activity isolated from the rhizosphere of barley plants and evaluating the influence of potent plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolates on growth and yield of five barley cultivars under salinity stress. Plant growth and yield in barley cultivars following inoculation with salt-tolerant, ACC deaminase producing PGPR strains under salt stress were quantified. Results indicated that under various levels of salinity (50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl) inoculation with PGPRs had positive impact on growth parameters and yield of barley cultivars including plant height, spike length, weight and number, peduncle length, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield, comparing to uninoculated control plants under salinity stress. Inoculation of barley cultivars with bacteria ameliorated the negative effects of salinity and resulted in increase in growth and yield. Besides, as the salinity levels increased, growth and yield of barley cultivars decreased; however, cultivars showed different responses to salt stress. This study demonstrates the vital role of rhizobacteria containing ACC deaminase for increasing salt tolerance and consequently improving the growth and yield of barley plants under salinity stress.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the chronic effects of a bio-pesticide (NeemAzal) on some biochemical parameters of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) under laboratory conditions. At first, 96 h LC50 of the pesticide was determined using probit analysis software and was found to be 0.73 mg L � 1 of the active ingredient (azadirachtin) of the pesticide. Fresh fish were then divided into three treatments and a control and were exposed to sublethal concentrations (10%, 20% and 30% of the 96 h LC50 value) of the pesticide for a month. The biochemical examination of the blood showed a remarkable decrease in values of protein, albumin, AST, ALT, ALP and LDH (P < 0.05).
