The proliferation of smartphones and other mobile devices provides a unique opportunity to make Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) accessible to everyone in the form of an application empowered by low-cost Machine/Deep Learning (ML/DL) models to enhance road safety. For the critical feature of Collision Avoidance in Mobile ADAS, lightweight Deep Neural Networks (DNN) for object detection exist, but conventional pixel-wise depth/distance estimation DNNs are vastly more computationally expensive making them unsuitable for a real-time application on resource-constrained devices. In this paper, we present a distance estimation model, DECADE, that processes each detector output instead of constructing pixel-wise depth/disparity maps. In it, we propose a pose estimation DNN to estimate allocentric orientation of detections to supplement the distance estimation DNN in its prediction of distance using bounding box features. We demonstrate that these modules can be attached to any detector to extend object detection with fast distance estimation. Evaluation of the proposed modules with attachment to and fine-tuning on the outputs of the YOLO object detector on the KITTI 3D Object Detection dataset achieves state-of-the-art performance with 1.38 meters in Mean Absolute Error and 7.3% in Mean Relative Error in the distance range of 0-150 meters. Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) represent the causal relationships between transcription factors (TFs) and target genes in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. Understanding these networks is crucial for uncovering disease mechanisms and identifying therapeutic targets. In this work, we investigate the potential of large language models (LLMs) for GRN discovery, leveraging their learned biological knowledge alone or in combination with traditional statistical methods. We develop a task-based evaluation strategy to address the challenge of unavailable ground truth causal graphs. Specifically, we use the GRNs suggested by LLMs to guide causal synthetic data generation and compare the resulting data against the original dataset. Our statistical and biological assessments show that LLMs can support statistical modeling and data synthesis for biological research.

This paper presents a physics-based compact model for circuit simulations in a SPICE environment for HfO2-based ferroelectric capacitors (FeCaps). The model has been calibrated based on experimental data obtained from HfO2-based FeCaps. A thermal model with an accurate description of the device parasitics is included to derive precise device characteristics based on first principles. The model incorporates statistical data that enables Monte Carlo analysis based on realistic distributions, thereby making it particularly well-suited for design-technology co-optimization (DTCO). Furthermore, the model is demonstrated in circuit simulations using an integrated circuit with current programming, wherein partial switching of the ferroelectric polarization is observed. High-resolution images are preferable in medical imaging domain as they significantly improve the diagnostic capability of the underlying method. In particular, high resolution helps substantially in improving automatic image segmentation. However, most of the existing deep learning-based techniques for medical image segmentation are optimized for input images having small spatial dimensions and perform poorly on high-resolution images. To address this shortcoming, we propose a parallel-in-branch architecture called TransResNet, which incorporates Transformer and CNN in a parallel manner to extract features from multi-resolution images independently. In TransResNet, we introduce Cross Grafting Module (CGM), which generates the grafted features, enriched in both global semantic and low-level spatial details, by combining the feature maps from Transformer and CNN branches through fusion and self-attention mechanism. Moreover, we use these grafted features in the decoding process, increasing the information flow for better prediction of the segmentation mask. Extensive experiments on ten datasets demonstrate that TransResNet achieves either state-of-the-art or competitive results on several segmentation tasks, including skin lesion, retinal vessel, and polyp segmentation. Audio-Language Models (ALMs) have recently achieved remarkable success in zero-shot audio recognition tasks, which match features of audio waveforms with class-specific text prompt features, inspired by advancements in Vision-Language Models (VLMs). Given the sensitivity of zero-shot performance to the choice of hand-crafted text prompts, many prompt learning techniques have been developed for VLMs. We explore the efficacy of these approaches in ALMs and propose a novel method, Prompt Learning in Audio Language Models (PALM), which optimizes the feature space of the text encoder branch. Unlike existing methods that work in the input space, our approach results in greater training efficiency. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on 11 audio recognition datasets, encompassing a variety of speech-processing tasks, and compare the results with three baselines in a few-shot learning setup. Optimizing Deep Learning-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (DL-SLAM) algorithms is essential for efficient implementation on resource-constrained embedded platforms, enabling real-time on-board computation in autonomous mobile robots. This paper presents SPAQ-DL-SLAM, a framework that strategically applies Structured Pruning and Quantization (SPAQ) to the architecture of one of the state-ofthe-art DL-SLAM algorithms, DROID-SLAM, for resource and energy-efficiency. Specifically, we perform structured pruning with fine-tuning based on layer-wise sensitivity analysis followed by 8-bit post-training static quantization (PTQ) on the deep learning modules within DROID-SLAM. Our SPAQ-DROIDSLAM model, optimized version of DROID-SLAM model using our SPAQ-DL-SLAM framework with 20% structured pruning and 8-bit PTQ, achieves an 18.9% reduction in FLOPs and a 79.8% reduction in overall model size compared to the DROID-SLAM model. Our evaluations on the TUM-RGBD benchmark shows that SPAQ-DROID-SLAM model surpasses the DROID-SLAM model by an average of 10.5% on absolute trajectory error (ATE) metric. Additionally, our results on the ETH3D SLAM training benchmark demonstrate enhanced generalization capabilities of the SPAQ-DROID-SLAM model, seen by a higher Area Under the Curve (AUC) score and success in 2 additional data sequences compared to the DROIDSLAM model. Despite these improvements, the model exhibits performance variance on the distinct Vicon Room sequences from the EuRoC dataset, which are captured at high angular velocities. Deploying Multi-Modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) in healthcare is hindered by their high computational demands and significant memory requirements, which are particularly challenging for resource-constrained devices like the Nvidia Jetson Xavier. This problem is particularly evident in remote medical settings where advanced diagnostics are needed but resources are limited. In this paper, we introduce an optimization method for the general-purpose MLLM, TinyLLaVA, which we have adapted and renamed TinyLLaVA-Med. This adaptation involves instruction-tuning and fine-tuning TinyLLaVA on a medical dataset by drawing inspiration from the LLaVA-Med training pipeline. Our approach successfully minimizes computational complexity and power consumption, with TinyLLaVA-Med operating at 18.9W and using 11.9GB of memory, while achieving accuracies of 64.54% on VQA-RAD and 70.70% on SLAKE for closed-ended questions. Therefore, TinyLLaVA-Med achieves deployment viability in hardware-constrained environments with low computational resources, maintaining essential functionalities and delivering accuracies close to state-of-the-art models.

Medical foundation models are gaining prominence in the medical community for their ability to derive general representations from extensive collections of medical image-text pairs. Recent research indicates that these models are susceptible to backdoor attacks, which allow them to classify clean images accurately but fail when specific triggers are introduced. However, traditional backdoor attacks necessitate a considerable amount of additional data to maliciously pre-train a model. This requirement is often impractical in medical imaging applications due to the usual scarcity of data. Inspired by the latest developments in learnable prompts, this work introduces a method to embed a backdoor into the medical foundation model during the prompt learning phase. By incorporating learnable prompts within the text encoder and introducing imperceptible learnable noise trigger to the input images, we exploit the full capabilities of the medical foundation models (Med-FM). Our method, BAPLe, requires only a minimal subset of data to adjust the noise trigger and the text prompts for downstream tasks, enabling the creation of an effective backdoor attack. Through extensive experiments with four medical foundation models, each pre-trained on different modalities and evaluated across six downstream datasets, we demonstrate the efficacy of our approach. BAPLe achieves a high backdoor success rate across all models and datasets, outperforming the baseline backdoor attack methods. Our work highlights the vulnerability of Med-FMs towards backdoor attacks and strives to promote the safe adoption of Med-FMs before their deployment in real-world applications. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a prominent type of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), have emerged as a state-of-the-art solution for solving machine learning tasks. To improve the performance and energy efficiency of CNN inference, the employment of specialized hardware accelerators is prevalent. However, CNN accelerators still face performance- and energy-efficiency challenges due to high off-chip memory (DRAM) access latency and energy, which are especially crucial for latency- and energy-constrained embedded applications. Moreover, different DRAM architectures have different profiles of access latency and energy, thus making it challenging to optimize them for high performance and energy-efficient CNN accelerators. To address this, we present PENDRAM, a novel design space exploration methodology that enables high-performance and energy-efficient CNN acceleration through a generalized DRAM data mapping policy. Specifically, it explores the impact of different DRAM data mapping policies and DRAM architectures across different CNN partitioning and scheduling schemes on the DRAM access latency and energy, then identifies the pareto-optimal design choices. The experimental results show that our DRAM data mapping policy improves the energy-delay-product of DRAM accesses in the CNN accelerator over other mapping policies by up to 96%. The rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) environment has introduced unprecedented levels of connectivity and automation. The Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol has become recognized in IoT applications due to its lightweight and efficient features; however, this simplicity also renders MQTT vulnerable to multiple attacks that can be launched against the protocol, including denial of service (DoS) and brute-force attacks. This study aims to improve the detection of intrusion DoS and brute-force attacks in an MQTT traffic intrusion detection system (IDS). Our approach utilizes the MQTT dataset for model training by employing effective feature engineering and ensemble learning techniques. Following our analysis and comparison, we identified the top 10 features demonstrating the highest effectiveness, leading to improved model accuracy. We used supervised machine learning models, including Random Forest, Decision Trees, k-Nearest Neighbors, and XGBoost, in combination with ensemble classifiers. Stacking, voting, and bagging ensembles utilize these four supervised machine-learning methods to combine models. This study's results illustrate the proposed technique's efficacy in enhancing the accuracy of detecting DoS and brute-force attacks in MQTT traffic. Stacking and voting classifiers achieved the highest accuracy of 0.9538. Our approach outperforms the most recent study that utilized the same dataset.

We experimentally explore the morphological evolution of cages in quasi-two-dimensional suspensions of colloidal fluids, uncovering a complex dynamic restructuring in the fluid. Although cages display isotropic evolution in the laboratory frame, we observe a striking anisotropy when analyzed in the displacement frame of the caged particles. Moreover, our findings reveal that particles in specific but distinct regions of the cage predominantly contribute to either its persistence or relaxation. Thus, our study provides a coarse-grained microscopic picture of the structural relaxation of these fluids through cage evolution, which has broader implications for the flow and phase behavior of complex fluids in confined geometry., Comment: 3 figures

In the realm of deploying Machine Learning-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ML-ADAS) into real-world scenarios, adverse weather conditions pose a significant challenge. Conventional ML models trained on clear weather data falter when faced with scenarios like extreme fog or heavy rain, potentially leading to accidents and safety hazards. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a novel approach: employing a Denoising Deep Neural Network as a preprocessing step to transform adverse weather images into clear weather images, thereby enhancing the robustness of ML-ADAS systems. The proposed method eliminates the need for retraining all subsequent Depp Neural Networks (DNN) in the ML-ADAS pipeline, thus saving computational resources and time. Moreover, it improves driver visualization, which is critical for safe navigation in adverse weather conditions. By leveraging the UNet architecture trained on an augmented KITTI dataset with synthetic adverse weather images, we develop the Weather UNet (WUNet) DNN to remove weather artifacts. Our study demonstrates substantial performance improvements in object detection with WUNet preprocessing under adverse weather conditions. Volumetric medical segmentation models have achieved significant success on organ and tumor-based segmentation tasks in recent years. However, their vulnerability to adversarial attacks remains largely unexplored, raising serious concerns regarding the real-world deployment of tools employing such models in the healthcare sector. This underscores the importance of investigating the robustness of existing models. In this context, our work aims to empirically examine the adversarial robustness across current volumetric segmentation architectures, encompassing Convolutional, Transformer, and Mamba-based models. We extend this investigation across four volumetric segmentation datasets, evaluating robustness under both white box and black box adversarial attacks. Overall, we observe that while both pixel and frequency-based attacks perform reasonably well under \emph{white box} setting, the latter performs significantly better under transfer-based black box attacks. Across our experiments, we observe transformer-based models show higher robustness than convolution-based models with Mamba-based models being the most vulnerable. Additionally, we show that large-scale training of volumetric segmentation models improves the model's robustness against adversarial attacks. Accurately estimating the position of a patient's side robotic arm in real time in a remote surgery task is a significant challenge, particularly in Tactile Internet (TI) environments. This paper presents a Kalman Filter (KF) based computationally efficient position estimation method. The study also assume no prior knowledge of the dynamic system model of the robotic arm system. Instead, The JIGSAW dataset, which is a comprehensive collection of robotic surgical data, and the Master Tool Manipulator's (MTM) input are utilized to learn the system model using System Identification (SI) toolkit available in Matlab. We further investigate the effectiveness of KF to determine the position of the Patient Side Manipulator (PSM) under simulated network conditions that include delays, jitter, and packet loss. These conditions reflect the typical challenges encountered in real-world Tactile Internet applications. Extreme temperature outages can lead to not just economic losses but also various non-energy impacts (NEI) due to significant degradation of indoor operating conditions caused by service disruptions. However, existing resilience assessment approaches lack specificity for extreme temperature conditions. They often overlook temperature-related mortality and neglect the customer characteristics and grid response in the calculation, despite the significant influence of these factors on NEI-related economic losses. This paper aims to address these gaps by introducing a comprehensive framework to estimate the impact of resilience enhancement not only on the direct economic losses incurred by customers but also on potential NEI, including mortality and the value of statistical life during extreme temperature-related outages. The proposed resilience valuation integrates customer characteristics and grid response variables based on a scalable grid simulation environment. This study adopts a holistic approach to quantify customer-oriented economic impacts, utilizing probabilistic loss scenarios that incorporate health-related factors and damage/loss models as a function of exposure for valuation. The proposed methodology is demonstrated through comparative resilient outage planning, using grid response models emulating a Texas weather zone during the 2021 winter storm Uri. The case study results show that enhanced outage planning with hardened infrastructure can improve the system resilience and thereby reduce the relative risk of mortality by 16% and save the total costs related to non-energy impacts by 74%. These findings underscore the efficacy of the framework by assessing the financial implications of each case, providing valuable insights for decision-makers and stakeholders involved in extreme-weather related resilience planning for risk management and mitigation strategies.

Continual learning (CL) has spurred the development of several methods aimed at consolidating previous knowledge across sequential learning. Yet, the evaluations of these methods have primarily focused on the final output, such as changes in the accuracy of predicted classes, overlooking the issue of representational forgetting within the model. In this paper, we propose a novel representation-based evaluation framework for CL models. This approach involves gathering internal representations from throughout the continual learning process and formulating three-dimensional tensors. The tensors are formed by stacking representations, such as layer activations, generated from several inputs and model `snapshots', throughout the learning process. By conducting tensor component analysis (TCA), we aim to uncover meaningful patterns about how the internal representations evolve, expecting to highlight the merits or shortcomings of examined CL strategies. We conduct our analyses across different model architectures and importance-based continual learning strategies, with a curated task selection. While the results of our approach mirror the difference in performance of various CL strategies, we found that our methodology did not directly highlight specialized clusters of neurons, nor provide an immediate understanding the evolution of filters. We believe a scaled down version of our approach will provide insight into the benefits and pitfalls of using TCA to study continual learning dynamics.

Vapor deposition, known for precise structural control, is inevitably influenced by impurities. These impurities, often distinct from the depositing material, can significantly impact material properties, including local structure. Interestingly, the effect of immobilizing some of the depositing particles themselves, which would still preserve local structural symmetry, remains largely unexplored. By introducing a small fraction of pinned sites during colloidal vapor deposition and employing a combination of thermodynamic and kinematic measurements, we demonstrate that pinned sites, termed as "mobility impurities," are disfavored as nucleation centers. Moreover, tuning the mobility of mobile colloids can adjust nucleation likelihood. In later stages of growth, pinning induces mode localization, altering the thin film's vibrational spectrum. This paper presents a novel control strategy for drone networks to improve the quality of 3D structures reconstructed from aerial images by drones. Unlike the existing coverage control strategies for this purpose, our proposed approach simultaneously controls both the camera orientation and drone translational motion, enabling more comprehensive perspectives and enhancing the map's overall quality. Subsequently, we present a novel problem formulation, including a new performance function to evaluate the drone positions and camera orientations. We then design a QP-based controller with a control barrier-like function for a constraint on the decay rate of the objective function. The present problem formulation poses a new challenge, requiring significantly greater computational efforts than the case involving only translational motion control. We approach this issue technologically, namely by introducing JAX, utilizing just-in-time (JIT) compilation and Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) acceleration. In the era of precision cosmology, ensuring the integrity of data analysis through blinding techniques is paramount -- a challenge particularly relevant for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). DESI represents a monumental effort to map the cosmic web, with the goal to measure the redshifts of tens of millions of galaxies and quasars. Given the data volume and the impact of the findings, the potential for confirmation bias poses a significant challenge. To address this, we implement and validate a comprehensive blind analysis strategy for DESI Data Release 1 (DR1), tailored to the specific observables DESI is most sensitive to: Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Redshift-Space Distortion (RSD) and primordial non-Gaussianities (PNG). We carry out the blinding at the catalog level, implementing shifts in the redshifts of the observed galaxies to blind for BAO and RSD signals and weights to blind for PNG through a scale-dependent bias. We validate the blinding technique on mocks, as well as on data by applying a second blinding layer to perform a battery of sanity checks. We find that the blinding strategy alters the data vector in a controlled way such that the BAO and RSD analysis choices do not need any modification before and after unblinding. Safe overtakes in trucks are crucial to prevent accidents, reduce congestion, and ensure efficient traffic flow, making early prediction essential for timely and informed driving decisions. Accordingly, we investigate the detection of truck overtakes from CAN data. Three classifiers, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Random Forest, and Support Vector Machines (SVM), are employed for the task. Our analysis covers up to 10 seconds before the overtaking event, using an overlapping sliding window of 1 second to extract CAN features. We observe that the prediction scores of the overtake class tend to increase as we approach the overtake trigger, while the no-overtake class remain stable or oscillates depending on the classifier. Thus, the best accuracy is achieved when approaching the trigger, making early overtaking prediction challenging. The classifiers show good accuracy in classifying overtakes (Recall/TPR > 93%), but accuracy is suboptimal in classifying no-overtakes (TNR typically 80-90% and below 60% for one SVM variant). We further combine two classifiers (Random Forest and linear SVM) by averaging their output scores. The fusion is observed to improve no-overtake classification (TNR > 92%) at the expense of reducing overtake accuracy (TPR). However, the latter is kept above 91% near the overtake trigger. Therefore, the fusion balances TPR and TNR, providing more consistent performance than individual classifiers.

A critical requirement of spectroscopic large scale structure analyses is correcting for selection of which galaxies to observe from an isotropic target list. This selection is often limited by the hardware used to perform the survey which will impose angular constraints of simultaneously observable targets, requiring multiple passes to observe all of them. In SDSS this manifested solely as the collision of physical fibers and plugs placed in plates. In DESI, there is the additional constraint of the robotic positioner which controls each fiber being limited to a finite patrol radius. A number of approximate methods have previously been proposed to correct the galaxy clustering statistics for these effects, but these generally fail on small scales. To accurately correct the clustering we need to upweight pairs of galaxies based on the inverse probability that those pairs would be observed (Bianchi \& Percival 2017). This paper details an implementation of that method to correct the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey for incompleteness. To calculate the required probabilities, we need a set of alternate realizations of DESI where we vary the relative priority of otherwise identical targets. These realizations take the form of alternate Merged Target Ledgers (AMTL), the files that link DESI observations and targets. We present the method used to generate these alternate realizations and how they are tracked forward in time using the real observational record and hardware status, propagating the survey as though the alternate orderings had been adopted. We detail the first applications of this method to the DESI One-Percent Survey (SV3) and the DESI year 1 data. We present cosmological results from the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in galaxy, quasar and Lyman-$\alpha$ forest tracers from the first year of observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), to be released in the DESI Data Release 1. DESI BAO provide robust measurements of the transverse comoving distance and Hubble rate, or their combination, relative to the sound horizon, in seven redshift bins from over 6 million extragalactic objects in the redshift range $0.1-1$ and $w_a<0$. This preference is 2.6$\sigma$ for the DESI+CMB combination, and persists or grows when SN~Ia are added in, giving results discrepant with the $\Lambda$CDM model at the $2.5\sigma$, $3.5\sigma$ or $3.9\sigma$ levels for the addition of Pantheon+, Union3, or DES-SN5YR datasets respectively. For the flat $\Lambda$CDM model with the sum of neutrino mass $\sum m_\nu$ free, combining the DESI and CMB data yields an upper limit $\sum m_\nu < 0.072$ $(0.113)$ eV at 95% confidence for a $\sum m_\nu>0$ $(\sum m_\nu>0.059)$ eV prior. We present the measurement of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest of high-redshift quasars with the first-year dataset of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Our analysis uses over $420\,000$ Ly$\alpha$ forest spectra and their correlation with the spatial distribution of more than $700\,000$ quasars. An essential facet of this work is the development of a new analysis methodology on a blinded dataset. We conducted rigorous tests using synthetic data to ensure the reliability of our methodology and findings before unblinding. Additionally, we conducted multiple data splits to assess the consistency of the results and scrutinized various analysis approaches to confirm their robustness. For a given value of the sound horizon ($r_d$), we measure the expansion at $z_{\rm eff}=2.33$ with 2\% precision, $H(z_{\rm eff}) = (239.2 \pm 4.8) (147.09~{\rm Mpc} /r_d)$ km/s/Mpc. Similarly, we present a 2.4\% measurement of the transverse comoving distance to the same redshift, $D_M(z_{\rm eff}) = (5.84 \pm 0.14) (r_d/147.09~{\rm Mpc})$ Gpc. Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) provide a robust standard ruler to measure the expansion history of the Universe through galaxy clustering. Density-field reconstruction is now a widely adopted procedure for increasing the precision and accuracy of the BAO detection. With the goal of finding the optimal reconstruction settings to be used in the DESI 2024 galaxy BAO analysis, we assess the sensitivity of the post-reconstruction BAO constraints to different choices in our analysis configuration, performing tests on blinded data from the first year of DESI observations (DR1), as well as on mocks that mimic the expected clustering and selection properties of the DESI DR1 target samples. Overall, we find that BAO constraints remain robust against multiple aspects in the reconstruction process, including the choice of smoothing scale, treatment of redshift-space distortions, fiber assignment incompleteness, and parameterizations of the BAO model. Layered materials that exhibit magnetic ordering in their pristine form are very rare. Several standard approaches, such as adsorption of atoms, introduction of point defects, and edge engineering, have been developed to induce magnetism in two-dimensional materials. In this way, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer TiS$_2$ doped with 3$d$ transition metals (TMs) atoms in both octahedral 1T and trigonal prismatic 1H structures using first-principles calculations. In its pristine form, TiS$_2$ is a non-magnetic semiconductor. The bands near the Fermi energy primarily exhibit $d$ orbital characters, and due to the presence of ideal octahedral and trigonal arrangements, they are well separated from other bands with $p$ character. Upon substituting 3$d$-TM atoms in both structures, a variety of electronic and magnetic phases emerge, including magnetic semiconductor, magnetic half-metal, non-magnetic metal, and magnetic metal. Chromium exhibits the largest magnetic moment in both the 1T and 1H structures. The 1T structure shows a slightly higher magnetic moment of 3.419 $\mu_B$ compared to the 1H structure 3.138 $\mu_B$, attributed to the distorted octahedral structure of the 1T structure. Unlike pristine TiS$_2$, the deficiency in saturation of neighboring S atoms in the presence of impurities leads to the proximity of energy levels of $d$ and $p$ states, resulting in unexpectedly sizable magnetic moments. Another interesting case is Cobalt, which leads to a magnetic moment of approximately 0.805 $\mu_B$ in the 1H structure, while the Co exhibits a non-magnetic state in the 1H structure. Many NLP researchers rely on free computational services, such as Google Colab, to fine-tune their Transformer models, causing a limitation for hyperparameter optimization (HPO) in long-text classification due to the method having quadratic complexity and needing a bigger resource. In Indonesian, only a few works were found on long-text classification using Transformers. Most only use a small amount of data and do not report any HPO. In this study, using 18k news articles, we investigate which pretrained models are recommended to use based on the output length of the tokenizer. We then compare some hacks to shorten and enrich the sequences, which are the removals of stopwords, punctuation, low-frequency words, and recurring words. To get a fair comparison, we propose and run an efficient and dynamic HPO procedure that can be done gradually on a limited resource and does not require a long-running optimization library. Using the best hack found, we then compare 512, 256, and 128 tokens length. We find that removing stopwords while keeping punctuation and low-frequency words is the best hack. Some of our setups manage to outperform taking 512 first tokens using a smaller 128 or 256 first tokens which manage to represent the same information while requiring less computational resources. Monocular depth estimation (MDE) has advanced significantly, primarily through the integration of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and more recently, Transformers. However, concerns about their susceptibility to adversarial attacks have emerged, especially in safety-critical domains like autonomous driving and robotic navigation. Existing approaches for assessing CNN-based depth prediction methods have fallen short in inducing comprehensive disruptions to the vision system, often limited to specific local areas. In this paper, we introduce SSAP (Shape-Sensitive Adversarial Patch), a novel approach designed to comprehensively disrupt monocular depth estimation (MDE) in autonomous navigation applications. Our patch is crafted to selectively undermine MDE in two distinct ways: by distorting estimated distances or by creating the illusion of an object disappearing from the system's perspective. Notably, our patch is shape-sensitive, meaning it considers the specific shape and scale of the target object, thereby extending its influence beyond immediate proximity. Furthermore, our patch is trained to effectively address different scales and distances from the camera. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach induces a mean depth estimation error surpassing 0.5, impacting up to 99% of the targeted region for CNN-based MDE models. Additionally, we investigate the vulnerability of Transformer-based MDE models to patch-based attacks, revealing that SSAP yields a significant error of 0.59 and exerts substantial influence over 99% of the target region on these models., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2303.01351

Experimental observations of anisotropic tightly bound excitons in black phosphorene, and correlated phenomena such as room temperature magnetically active edges in phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs), sparked discussions on the controversial screening of the Coulomb interaction in phosphorene-based materials. In this way, we investigate the first-principles electronic screening of the long-range Coulomb interaction in phosphorene from bulk to nanoribbon by employing ab initio calculations in conjunction with the constrained random-phase approximation. The bands near Fermi energy (E_F) are predominantly pz orbital characters, and due to the puckering, they are not well separated from the other bands with s, px, and specially py characters. This proximity in energy levels increases the contribution of px/py $\rightarrow$ pz transitions to the polarization function and significantly alters the Coulomb parameters. In semiconducting systems, the on-site Coulomb interaction values (Hubbard U) range from 4.1 to 6.5 eV and depend on the correlated subspace, electronic structure, nanoribbon's width, and edge passivation. Our long-range interaction has revealed a non-conventional screening in semiconducting nanoribbons. We have discovered that screening actually enhances the electron-hole interaction for separations larger than a critical distance r_c, which is contrary to what was previously seen in conventional semiconductors. In unpassivated zigzag nanoribbons, due to a metallic screening channel stemming from quasi-flat edge bands at E_F, we find U/W_b > 1 (the bandwidth W_b) and large gradient of inter-site Coulomb interactions, making them correlated materials.
