33. Space Charge Characteristics of Electrothermally Aged Oil-Paper Insulation Under Slightly Nonuniform Electric Field

Abstract

To study the change characteristics of space charge in oil-paper insulation under a slightly nonuniform electric field and a uniform electric field, the existing space charge measuring device was improved, and sphere- and column-plate electrode models were prepared. Oil-paper insulation samples at different aging stages were obtained via electrothermal aging. The real-time waveforms of the space charge distribution in the samples at different aging stages were measured in the process of polarization with a direct-current (dc) voltage and depolarization with a dc voltage, and the effects of different electric-field types on the charge distribution and motion characteristics of oil-paper insulation samples at different aging stages were examined. The results indicated that the existence of a slightly nonuniform electric field accelerated the change in the charge-density peak at the interface and increased the fluctuation range of the charge-density curve in the process of applying a dc voltage. With the aggravation of electrothermal aging, the amount of charge injected into the sample increased, and the slightly nonuniform electric field intensified this process, affecting the accumulation and dissipation of space charge in the sample. Electrothermal aging increased the trap distribution density and energy-level depth. However, for an oil-paper insulation sample at the same aging stage, compared with the uniform electric field, the slightly nonuniform electric field had no obvious effect on the trap energy-level depth, but it increased the amount of trapped charge and changed the trap density distribution in the sample. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for examining the influence of slightly nonuniform electric fields on the space charge distribution characteristics of oil-paper insulation subjected to ac/dc combined electrothermal aging.

Abstract

The space charge dynamic behavior and accumulation are important contributions to the formation of electrical trees, as recognized by cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable insulation under alternating current electric stress. In this article, in order to investigate the reasons for the charge accumulation phenomenon revealed by experiments under ac stress, a bipolar space charge transport model with symmetrical and asymmetrical parameters is built under ac stress. The charge accumulation mechanism is analyzed based on the variation of space charge density with different voltage application time and voltage phase. The effects of each major physical parameter are simulated and analyzed, respectively. The results show that there is no obvious space charge accumulation with the transport model under symmetrical physical parameters. However, asymmetrical parameters in the transport model result in different motions between positive and negative charges, which greatly enhances the charge accumulation. Each main parameter has an influence on charge accumulation in different perspectives and extents. The applicability of the simulation model with asymmetrical parameters is evaluated by comparing experiment and simulation results. This study contributes to the understanding of space charge generation mechanism under ac voltage and serves as a basis for improving the stability of XLPE electric power cables. Abstract

The distribution characteristics of space charge in the axial and radial direction of the cable at the stress cone were tested in paper. The 10kV XLPE cable was aging under electrical-thermal aging to explore the rule of the space charge distribution along the electric heating aging and the formation mechanism of the space charge accumulation at the stress cone. In the axial direction, the position of the maximum space charge density is at the inner edge of the cable stress cone, about 2cm. With the increase of aging time, space charge density at the stress cone is gradually increased and extend range. The accumulation of space charge from the outside to the stress cone is the cause of the space charge accumulation. The study of space charge accumulation at stress cone can help discover the essential explanations for the failure of cable accessories. It has practical significance for prolonging cable life and effectively diagnosing cable faults.
