Introduction: The digestive tract of Neotropical cichlids has not been deeply studied, and it is a fundamental topic for understanding fish physiology, nutrition, trophic associations, and evolution. Objective: To describe anatomically and histologically the digestive tract of the Neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus and to immunolocalize the orexigenic peptide (Npy) along the intestine. Methods: We euthanized 14 adult individuals and fixed the organs in Bouins solution; we stained 7 μm thick paraffin sections for general description and with Alcian Blue (pH = 2.5, AB) and Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) to identify acid or neutral glycoconjugates, respectively. Additionally, we performed immunohistochemistry for Npy in 3 adult individuals. We manually counted PAS- and AB-positive cells, and Npy-immunoreactive cells per fold. Results: There is a short oesophagus, a sac-like stomach, and a tubular intestine with two loops. The oesophagus has a stratified epithelium with a high density of PAS- and AB-positive goblet cells and striated muscle fibers in the tunica muscularis. The stomach mucosa is formed by simple columnar epithelium. The intestine has a simple columnar epithelium, with brush border and interspersed PAS- and AB-positive goblet cells, and Npy-immunoreactive cells. There is an ileorectal valve in the transition between the posterior intestine and the rectum. This last gut portion has goblet cells and a thicker tunica muscularis. Conclusions: C. dimerus shares features with other Neotropical cichlids, but the goblet cells and gastric glands distribution seems to be unique for the species. To our understanding, this is the first work to describe Npy-immunoreactive cells distribution in the intestine of a Neotropical cichlid fish. Objetivo: Describir anatómica e histológicamente el tracto digestivo del pez cíclido neotropical Cichlasoma dimerus e inmunolocalizar el péptido orexigénico (Npy) a lo largo del intestino. La mucosa del estómago está revestida por epitelio simple cilíndrico. El epitelio intestinal es simple cilíndrico con chapa estriada y células caliciformes PAS- y AB- positivas intercaladas, y células inmunorreactivas a Npy. Hay una válvula ileorrectal en la transición entre el intestino posterior y el recto. Esta última porción intestinal tiene células caliciformes y una túnica muscular más gruesa. Conclusiones: C. dimerus comparte características con otros cíclidos neotropicales, pero la distribución de las células caliciformes y las glándulas gástricas, serían rasgos propios de esta especie. A nuestro entender, este es el primer trabajo que describe la distribución de células inmunorreactivas a Npy en el intestino de un pez cíclido neotropical.

The objective of this work was to determine the effect of L-carnitine supplementation on the productive performance and physiology of juvenile pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). A total of 288 pacu, with an initial average weight of 9.62±0.74 g, were fed experimental diets supplemented with 400, 800, 1,200, 1,600, and 2,000 mg kg-1 L-carnitine and a control diet (without supplementation), for 128 days. The following were evaluated: growth performance; carcass centesimal composition; intestinal, muscle, and hepatic histomorphologies; and oxidative stress. The fish hepatosomatic and viscerosomatic fat indexes increased with the inclusion of L-carnitine in the diets. The evaluation of carcass centesimal composition showed that the diets supplemented with 2,000 mg kg-1 L-carnitine caused a reduction in protein content and an increase in that of ethereal extract. Intestinal histomorphology indicated changes in the villi with L-carnitine supplementation. Moreover, hepatic lipid peroxidation occurred with the inclusion of 2,000 mg kg-1 L-carnitine. The supplementation with L-carnitine in the diets of pacu juveniles does not influence the development of the fish until the rate of 1,600 mg kg-1. However, high carcass lipid levels, as well as an increase in the hepatosomatic and viscerosomatic fat indexes, are observed in fish fed diets containing 2,000 mg kg-1. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o efeito da suplementação de L-carnitina no desempenho produtivo e na fisiologia de juvenis de pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). Um total de 288 pacus, com peso inicial médio de 9,62±0,74 g, foram alimentados com dietas experimentais suplementadas com 400, 800, 1.200, 1.600 e 2.000 mg kg-1 de L-carnitina e com uma dieta controle (sem suplementação), por 128 dias. Foram avaliados: desempenho produtivo; composição centesimal da carcaça; histomorfologias intestinal, muscular e hepática; e estresse oxidativo. Os índices hepatossomático e de gordura viscerossomática dos peixes aumentaram com a inclusão de L-carnitina nas rações. A avaliação da composição centesimal da carcaça mostrou que as dietas suplementadas com 2.000 mg kg-1 de L-carnitina causaram redução no conteúdo de proteína e aumento no de extrato etéreo. A histomorfologia intestinal indicou alterações nas vilosidades com a suplementação de L-carnitina. Além disso, a peroxidação lipídica hepática ocorreu com a inclusão de 2.000 mg kg-1 de L-carnitina. A suplementação de L-carnitina em dietas para juvenis de pacu não influencia o desenvolvimento dos peixes até a dose de 1.600 mg kg-1. Entretanto, observam-se elevados níveis de lipídeos na carcaça, assim como aumento nos índices hepatossomáticos e de gordura viscerossomática, em peixes alimentados com rações contendo 2.000 mg kg-1.

SUMMARY: Micro-implant stability has always been the focus of orthodontic clinical research.In the experiment, the morphological changes of bone tissue around the micro-implants in self-tapping and assisting implantation were investigated to explore the effect of different implantation on the osseointegration of micro-implants in order to provide some theoretical basis for clinical practice. Six adult male Beagle dogs were selected,three implants were implanted into the left and right maxillary bone of Beagle dogs at the 0th, 4th and 6th week, respectively. One side to self-tapping implantation, the opposite side to assisting implantation. At the 8th week of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed and the micro-implant-bone tissue specimens with the healing time of 8w, 4w and 2w were obtained.The specimens were stained with Toluidine Blue (TB) and photographed under 100X, 200X microscope. Morphology of microimplant- bone interface cells was observed under light microscope. In self-tapping group, there were some fibrous tissues surrounding the micro-implants at the 2th week, the formation of osteoblasts and osteoid was observed at the 4th week, the wavy and lamellar bone tissues were seen at the 8th week.In assisting group,more collagen fibers were deposited around the micro-implant at the 2th week, there were a large number of osteoid-like cells, and the collagen was gradually replaced by the bone tissue at the 4th week, the osteoblasts were active and the osteoblasts were linear arrange and form a laminate bone at the 8th week.Whether implanted self-tapping or assisted implantation, micro-implant-bone interface reconstruction can occur. If the clinical need for early loading force, micro-implant try to choose selftapping implantation. By appropriately prolonging the healing time, the initial stability of the micro-implant under assistive implantation can be improved. RESUMEN: La estabilidad del microimplante siempre ha sido el foco de la investigación clínica en ortodoncia. En este trabajo se investigaron los cambios morfológicos del tejido óseo alrededor de los microimplantes autorroscantes y se ayudó a la implantación para explorar el efecto de diferentes implantes en la osteointegración de microimplantes con el fin de proporcionar alguna base teórica para la práctica clínica. Se seleccionaron seis perros Beagle machos adultos, y se colocaron tres implantes en los huesos maxilares izquierdo y derecho en la 0ª, 4ª y 6ª semana, respectivamente. De un lado se colocó el implante autorroscante, y del otro lado el implante asistido. En la octava semana, se sacrificaron los animales y se obtuvieron las muestras de microimplante-hueso con el tiempo de cicatrización de 8, 4 y 2 semanas. Las muestras fueron teñidas con azul de toluidina (TB) y fotografiadas bajo aumento de 100X, y microscopio de 200X. La morfología de las células de la interfaz microimplante-hueso se observó bajo microscopio óptico. En el grupo autorroscante, había tejido fibroso que rodeaba los microimplantes a la 2ª semana, se observó la formación de osteoblastos y osteoide a la 4ª semana y de tejido óseo ondulado y lamelar a la 8ª semana. En el grupo asistido, se depositaron más fibras de colágeno alrededor del microimplante en la 2ª semana, hubo un gran número de células similares a osteoide, y el colágeno fue reemplazado gradualmente por el tejido óseo en la 4ª semana; los osteoblastos estaban activos y se ubicaron linealmente formando un hueso laminado en la 8ª semana. Ya sea que el implante sea con autoasistencia o con implantación asistida, puede ocurrir la reconstrucción de la interfaz microimplante-hueso. Si existe la necesidad clínica de una fuerza de carga temprana, el microimplante de elección sería la implantación autorroscante. Al prolongar apropiadamente el tiempo de curación, se puede mejorar la estabilidad inicial del microimplante bajo implantación asistida.

Los tumores testiculares primarios de la especie canina son originados, principalmente, por tres tipos células (germinativas, intersticiales y sustentaculares). Estos pueden presentarse de forma singular o de forma mixta, frecuentemente, en animales adultos que padecen criptorquidismo. En el presente artículo se realiza la descripción histomorfológica en un tumor testicular primario con metástasis en ganglio linfático regional, observado en un perro adulto, sin raza definida, con 15 años de edad. Para este propósito, fue realizada una orquiectomía bilateral del animal, recolectándose también el ganglio linfático ilíaco, por sospecha de neoplasia. Se efectuó el procesamiento de rutina en un fragmento de testículo y otro de ganglio linfático para corte histológico y coloración con la técnica de Hematoxilina y Eosina. En el examen microscópico se identificó una proliferación de células neoplásicas procedentes de los túbulos seminíferos. La misma población de células fue observada en el ganglio linfático. El diagnóstico fue Seminoma con metástasis en ganglio linfático regional. Se concluye que la descripción histomorfológica es una herramienta fundamental para el diagnóstico y la clasificación de los tumores testiculares.

Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os efeitos do farelo do bagaço de caju (FBC) como ingrediente de rações em programas de restrição alimentar sobre as características da carcaça, qualidade da carne, peso dos órgãos e morfometria intestinal de suínos machos castrados e fêmeas. Foram utilizados vinte e quatro suínos mestiços (machos castrados e fêmeas) com peso médio inicial de 57,93 ± 3,67 kg/PV. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados em um esquema fatorial 3x2, sendo três níveis (0%, 15% e 30% de FBC), dois sexos e quatro repetições. Totalizando 24 parcelas. Os tratamentos foram compostos por uma dieta basal (DB), contendo milho, farelo de soja e núcleo comercial para suínos em terminação, sendo suplementada com diferentes níveis de FBC. No final do período experimental os animais foram abatidos para a avaliação da carcaça, qualidade da carne, Peso Absoluto (PA) e Peso Relativo (PR) dos órgãos e estudo morfométrico de fragmento do intestino delgado. A inclusão de FBC nas dietas não afetou a qualidade das carcaças das fêmeas, mas interferiu positivamente nas carcaças dos machos castrados, aumentando o rendimento de carne na carcaça resfriada e reduzindo a espessura de toucinho, sem afetar o perfil dos ácidos graxos. Observou-se aumento do peso dos órgãos e volume parcial da mucosa absortiva (Vv) das fêmeas. Quando se comparou os resultados entre sexo, os machos apresentaram maior peso do fígado e densidade de superfície da mucosa absortiva (Sv). Neste contexto, o FBC apresentou-se como um ingrediente a ser utilizado em programas de restrição alimentar qualitativa para suínos na fase de terminação. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the use of cashew bagasse bran (CBB) as food ingredient in qualitative feed restriction programs on the carcass traits, meat quality, organs weight and intestinal morphometry of barrows and gilts. Twenty – four crossbred pigs were used (12 barrows and 12 gilts) with an average initial body weight of 57.93 ± 3.67 kg/LW. The experimental designs was in randomized blocks 3x2 factorial arrangement with three level (0%, 15% e 30% CBB), two genders (barrows and gilts) and four repetition. A total of twenty-four instalments. The treatments were composed of basal diet (BD) formulated with corn, soybean meal and commercial base mix for finishing pigs, being containing different levels of CBB. At the end of the trial period the animals were slaughtered for the evaluation of the meat quality, traits carcass, Absolute Weight (AW) and Relative Weight (RW) of the organs and morphometric study of small intestine fragment. The inclusion of (CBB) in the diets did not affect the traits carcass of gilts, but interfered in the traits carcass of the barrow positively, increasing the yield of meat into cold carcass and reducing the thickness of subcutaneous fat, without affecting the fatty acid profile. However, we observed increased weight of organs and partial volume of absortiva mucosa of gilts. In the comparison between sex was observed a greater liver weight (AW) and (RW), and surface density of absortiva mucosa of barrow. The use of CBB was considered as ingredient to be used in programs of qualitative feed restriction for finishing pigs.

Rauwolfia vomitoria (RV) has potent sedative effect, which may result in severe unpleasant consequences if not controlled. This necessitated this study on the effect of Gongronema latifolium (GL) on RV-induced behaviour, biochemical activities, and histomorphology of the cerebral cortex. Eighteen male Wistar rats of average weight 266 g were grouped into three (13). Group 1 was the control administered 0.5 mL of Tween®20, while groups 2 and 3 were administered 150 mg/kg of RV, and a combination of 150 mg/kg of RV and 200 mg/kg of GL (RV+GL), respectively for seven days.
