The increased worldwide demand for chicken meat requires constant automation of operating systems and the proper implementation of self-control programs by slaughterhouses. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a self-washing system using heated water on reducing the load of public health concern bacteria on a broiler feet-cutter disc. In a three-month period, 84 samples (n = 42 per group) were collected for microbiological analysis from the feet-cutter disc with an operational self-washing process with Non-Heated Water (NHW) and Heated Water (HW). The logarithmic counts of Mesophilic Aerobics, Sulphite-Reducing Clostridia (SRC), Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in the NHW group were 1.82, 0.56, 0.31 and 0.14 Log10 CFU/cm2, respectively, whereas in the HW group were 1.17, 0.04, 0.15 and 0.08 Log10 CFU/cm2. Salmonella spp. was absent in all evaluated samples in both groups. The heated-water system reduced bacterial count, but statistical differences were solely observed for Mesophilic Aerobics and SRC. Nevertheless, its usage could be an additive in the operational procedure to avoid microbiological violations of food safety, in addition to being easy-to-implement and affordable for the industry. Resumo O aumento mundial da demanda por carne de frango exige constante automação de sistemas de operação e implementação adequada de programas de autocontrole pelos abatedouros. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficiência de sistema de autolavagem com água aquecida na redução da contagem de bactérias de interesse em saúde pública em disco corta-pés de frangos. Em um período de três meses, 84 amostras (n = 42, por grupo) foram colhidas para análises microbiológicas em disco corta-pés contando com um sistema operacional de autolavagem com água não aquecida (NHW) e água aquecida (HW). As contagens de Aeróbios Mesófilos, Clostridium Sulfito-redutor, Escherichia coli e Staphylococcus aureus, no grupo NHW, foram de 1,82, 0,56, 0,31 e 0,14 Log10 UFC/cm2, respectivamente, enquanto que, no grupo HW, foram de 1,17, 0,04, 0,15 e 0,08 Log10 UFC/cm2. Salmonella spp. foi ausente em todas amostras avaliadas, em ambos os grupos. O sistema com água aquecida reduziu as contagens bacterianas, mas diferenças estatísticas foram observadas somente em Aeróbios Mesófilos e Clostridium Sulfito-redutor. Apesar disso, seu uso pode ser um adicional ao procedimento operacional para evitar a violação dos limites microbiológicos de segurança alimentar, além de ser um sistema de fácil implementação e de baixo custo.

1. The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of stocking density on performance, litter moisture, Eimeria oocyst shedding, intestinal and foot lesions in broilers.2. A total of 192 1-day-old male Cobb broilers were distributed with three different stocking densities (6, 8 or 10 chickens/m2) with outdoor access and eight replicates, in a completely randomized design in two periods. Productive parameters were measured from three to seven weeks of age.3. Oocyst counts (OPG) in both excreta and litter was performed at three, four and five weeks of age. Intestinal and foot pad lesions were evaluated at seven weeks old. The stocking density of 6 birds/m2 had the highest body weights (P 0.05). Likewise, there was no effect of stocking density on OPG neither in excreta nor in litter, intestinal lesions, or foot pad and hock injuries (P>0.05).6. In conclusion the higher stocking density decreased both the feed intake and the live weight in broilers, but there were no effects in the number of Eimeria OPG in excreta or litter, neither intestinal lesions nor in foot pad injuries.

This article examines two instances of metathesis that have occurred in Ch'ol (Mayan) since the late 18th century. While at first, they may seem to be cases of irregular, sporadic change, a closer look at constraints involving ejective consonants within disyllabic and trisyllabic roots or stems suggests that these cases conform to a regular pattern within Ch'ol, and more generally, Mayan languages, in which reflexes of *q’ or *k’ are preferred in medial position in disyllabic roots with a medial glottalized consonant. The data support Hume's (2004) attestation assumption for metathesis, as well as Hock's (1985) structural motivation.

Lameness, injuries, and cleanliness are considered important indicators of dairy cow welfare, milk production, and milk quality. Previous research has identified that farmers globally underestimate the prevalence of these cow-based measurements, but no information on the perceptions of veterinarians is available. Because veterinarians are often perceived as the main providers of health advice on farms, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the true prevalence of lameness, injury (hock, knee, neck), and cleanliness (udder, legs, flanks), and the estimated prevalence of these issues by farmers and their herd veterinarians. A cross-sectional study was conducted between February 2016 and July 2017. First, the farm owner and the herd veterinarian were asked to estimate the prevalence of lameness, of neck, knee and hock injuries, and of udder, leg, and flank cleanliness on the farm. The research team then visited the farm and scored all lactating cows in the herd for each measurement. Linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between the prevalence estimated by the veterinarians and the farmers, of each cow-based measurement, and the true prevalence on the farm. The 93 herds enrolled had a median of 55 milking cows and were housed in tiestall (90%) and freestall (10%) barns. Ten herd veterinarians participated and were involved with 2 to 22 enrolled farms each. A wide variation was detected in the true prevalence of the different cow-based measurements among herds (lameness: range = 19–72%, median = 36%; neck injuries: range = 0–65%, median = 14%; knee injuries: range = 0–44%, median = 12%; hock injuries: range = 0–57%, median = 25%; dirty udder: range = 0–55%, median 13%; dirty legs: range = 0–91%, median = 18%; and dirty flanks: range = 0–82%, median = 20%). For both veterinarians and farmers, the perception of each cow-based measurement prevalence increased incrementally as the herd's true prevalence increased. Overall, farmers and veterinarians underestimated cow-based measurements. Farmers and veterinarians more accurately estimated lameness prevalence in herds with higher prevalence than in herds with low prevalence, suggesting a better awareness of the issue on farms with lameness problems. Injuries were less accurately estimated in herds with higher injury prevalence compared with herds with lower prevalence, suggesting an opportunity for better knowledge transfer in this area.

Objective: Claw health and carpal and tarsal lesions were assessed in a dairy herd during the transition from a tie-stall to a free-stall barn. The stress associated with the change in housing was also evaluated. Materials and methods: The initial size of the herd was 57 dairy cows, which were evaluated 4 times, 4-5 months apart, in a hoof-trimming chute. Claw horn and skin lesions of the foot were considered separately. The carpi and hocks were assessed for hair loss and skin lesions, and the hocks were also evaluated for swelling. Tail hair samples were collected from all cows during the second visit, and the cortisol concentration of 3 different sections of the hair was measured. Results: The high prevalence of digital dermatitis and other skin lesions in the hind legs seen in the tie-stall barn (49 %) did not change significantly during the 14-month study period and was 46 % at the last visit. Heel horn erosions of the hind feet were rare in the tie-stall barn (14 %), but had a prevalence of 100 % at the end of the study. There was a trend for a decrease in the prevalence of other claw horn lesions. The prevalence and severity of carpal and hock lesions decreased significantly in the free-stall barn. Compared to values in cows at the tie-stall barn, the hair cortisol concentration was significantly higher during the transition period and at the free-stall barn. Discussion and conclusions: The target variables were subjected to a multitude of factors but it can be assumed that the more comfortable lying surface in the free-stall barn had the most significant effect on carpal and tarsal joint health. The fluctuating prevalence of claw horn lesions indicates that claws health should be monitored closely. The increase in hair cortisol concentration after the transition to the free-stall barn could imply increased stress, but washout of cortisol in more distal hair segments could not be ruled out. Clinical relevance: The results of the present report cannot be directly applied to other herds; however, the significance of cow comfort is highlighted by the presence of fewer carpal and hock lesions. The significant increase in the prevalence of heel horn erosions indicates that the horn capsule is compromised under free-stall conditions.

Contact dermatitis, both on the foot pads and hocks, is a well-known health issue in broilers. Less is known about contact dermatitis in broiler breeders, however, although they have many risk factors for developing leg health problems in common with broilers. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and severity of contact dermatitis during the production cycle in 5 lines of broiler breeders, investigate possible causes of contact dermatitis, and study its relationship with gait, egg production, and floor egg percentage. Five commercially available genetic lines of broiler breeders were housed in 21 pens of 550 females and 50 males from 20 to 60 wk of age. Every 10 wk litter quality, leg health measurements (foot pad dermatitis, hock burn, and gait) and body weight were assessed of 50 random hens per pen. Total number of eggs, number of eggs laid outside the nest (floor eggs), and mortality were recorded daily per pen. Prevalence of foot pad dermatitis, hock burn, and gait problems increased with age. Litter quality started to decrease at 50 wk of age. Prevalence of foot pad dermatitis was affected by litter quality, whereas genetic line had little effect. One genetic line was more prone to developing hock burns, though generally the prevalence of hock burn (13%) was much lower than that of foot pad dermatitis (74%). The percentage of broiler breeders with gait problems increased up to 24% with age, but this was not related to the prevalence of contact dermatitis. The lines differed in body weight from 32 wk of age onwards, and a higher body weight was related to lower egg production and higher cumulative mortality. The percentage of floor eggs was not related to leg health parameters or genetic line. Broiler breeders thus have similar leg health problems as broilers, but these problems are not related to the percentage of floor eggs, suggesting that other factors are involved in the undesirable behavior of floor laying.

Intensification of broiler production has coincided with an increase in enteric disorders. Enteric syndromes of unknown aetiology are often associated with an increased feed conversion ratio and are given the general term "dysbiosis". Despite the importance of dysbiosis, information on factors contributing to this condition are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe dysbiosis in broilers (Ross 308) during one production round and to identify risk factors. Fifteen farms in Flanders (Belgium) were followed up, with visits at days 10, 17, 20, 24 and 28 of production. At every visit, 10 random birds were inspected for footpad lesions, hock burns and breast blisters. Also, coccidiosis and enteric abnormalities were scored after necropsy. A gut appearance score (GAS) was given based on 10 macroscopically visible parameters, where a higher GAS equalled more enteric abnormalities. Footpad lesions were seen in 14 farms and increased in prevalence with the age of the birds. Hock burns were seen less frequently, and no breast blisters were detected. Eimeria acervulina lesions were most frequently observed, followed by E. maxima and E. tenella lesions. The average GAS increased from day 10 until day 20. The strong correlations between the GAS at days 10, 17 and 20 indicate that prevalence of gut abnormalities at day 10 can be predictive for scores later on. A higher amount of intestinal defects was seen in older female birds, in the presence of a conceivable E. tenella infection and at farms with a higher productivity and sanitary status.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTSGut lesions found in young broilers can predict further development of defects.Caecal lesions showed the strongest correlation with GAS in a multivariate model.

A vertebral tumor is a category of spinal tumor which influence the bones or vertebrae of the spine in the human body system. The Spinal tumors that start inside the spinal string or the covering of the spinal line (dura) are called spinal rope tumors. Furthermore, the tumors that influence the vertebrae have frequently spread (metastasized) from the malignant growths in different parts of the body which is erratic with increasing the precision outcomes with the presence of medical instruments. Moreover, there are a few types of tumors that start inside the bones of the spine, for instance, such as chordoma, chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, plasmacytoma and Ewing's sarcoma. A vertebral tumor can influence the neurological capacity by pressing on the spinal string or nerve roots closer. In this paper, the vertebral tumor is analysed using Heuristic Hock Transformation Based Gautschi's-Blur Model (HHTGM) as a numerical approach. As these tumors developed inside the bone, they may likewise lead to torment, vertebral breaks or spinal precariousness which has been further examined in this research using Internet of Medical things (IoMT) Platform. These differences may result in large variation in the movement and limb loading and undesirable consequences to their musculoskeletal health. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between conformation and biomechanical measures in 60 GSDs. Full body kinematic and kinetic measures were computed from 3D motion capture and pressure data. The dogs were divided into groups based on their back slope and curvature. Correlation analysis and statistical differences between groups showed that GSDs with a greater back slope have a greater contact area in their forelimbs and place them closer together when standing (n = 60). During trot, the dogs with sloped back showed a greater vertical force in the forelimbs and a greater mid-thoracic flexion (n = 60). Unilateral differences were found in the stifle flexion, hock flexion and hock adduction, suggesting greater movement asymmetry with an increase in the back slope (n = 30). In conclusion, several biomechanical parameters are affected by the GSD’s slope of the back and not by its curvature. Further studies are required to determine whether the variation in movement, posture and conformation within the breed relates to an increased susceptibility to musculoskeletal disorders.

Records on association of milk yield and morphological traits, particularly parts distal to the knee/hock joints (fore/hind shank length and circumference) in dual-purpose cows, are hardly available. This makes the selection for milk yield potentials in favour of these traits difficult. The objectives of this study were to estimate the relationship between average milk yield (AvMY) and morphological traits (MT) and determine the best MT predictor of average milk yield in dual-purpose cows of the hot-humid environment in Ashanti Region of Ghana. Three hundred and eighty-four (384) cows were purposively selected to measure the association between AvMY and MT in 20 farms from April 2015 to July 2017. Analysis of data revealed that phenotypic correlations between AvMY and MT (i.e., head length, horn length, horn tip spacing, and muzzle circumference) were low (0.14 to 0.24), whilst that of heart girth, ear length, tail length and pelvic width were medium (0.34 to 0.46). High correlations were observed among AvMY, body length, body height at withers, height at rump, hock circumference, and fore/hind-shank length and circumference (0.50 to 0.84). The best predictor of AvMY was the hind-shank circumference, followed by the fore-shank circumference, hind-shank length, fore-shank length, and hock circumference in descending order. It was concluded that there was an association between AvMY and MT. Breeders and producers should consider fore- and hind-shank circumference and length when selecting for improvement in AvMY potential.

Stress and lameness negatively affect the health, production, and welfare of broilers. Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) is a leading cause of stress and lameness in commercial broilers. External changes in skin temperature related to changes in blood flow can be detected with infrared thermography (IRT), offering a noninvasive tool to assess the health of animals. This study compared physiological and noninvasive measures of stress and lameness in clinically healthy and lame male broiler chickens between 25 and 56 d. Birds were raised in pens within separate environmental chambers containing either litter flooring (sound) or wire flooring, with the latter established to induce BCO lameness (lame). Physiological and noninvasive measures of stress and lameness were collected: body weight, (BW), relative bursa weight, core body temperature, corticosterone (CORT) concentrations in serum and feathers, surface temperatures of the head (eye and beak) and leg (hock, shank, and foot) regions by infrared thermography (IRT), leg blood oxygen saturation (leg O2), and BCO lesion severity scores of tibial head necrosis (THN) and femoral head necrosis (FHN). Lame birds exhibited greater FHN and THN lesion severities, core body temperatures, and serum CORT (P < 0.05), but had lower BW, relative bursa weight, leg O2, and IRT surface temperatures of the beak, hock, shank, and foot compared with sound birds (P < 0.05). The difference in THN lesion severity between sound and lame birds decreased with age. Linear relationships between leg O2 with IRT leg surface temperatures were positive and negative between leg O2 with BCO lesion severity (P < 0.05). There were negative correlations between serum CORT with hock, shank and foot temperatures (P < 0.001), indicating that BCO is stressful. These results indicate that birds lame from BCO are stressed, have reduced oxygen saturation of blood in their legs, and that IRT surface temperatures can be used as noninvasive indicators of stress and lameness in broilers.

Background: The objectives of this study were to, (1) investigate the impact of the Dutch five-step hoof trimming (HT) technique on time to lameness and hoof lesion prevalence in grazing (GR) and non-grazing (NGR) dairy cows, and (2) determine the association between potential benefits of HT and animal-based welfare measures during lactation. A total of 520 non-lame cows without hoof lesions from 5 dairy farms (GR = 2, NGR = 3) were enrolled at early (within 30 days in milk; DIM) and late lactation (above 200 DIM), and randomly allocated to either trimmed (HGR or HNGR) or control groups (CON-GR and CON-NGR). Locomotion scores, body condition, hock condition, leg hygiene, and hoof health were assessed at monthly intervals until the following 270 days in milk. The data were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, multivariable Cox, and logistic regression models. The overall incidence rate of lameness was 36.2 cases/100 cows/month, with corresponding rates of 27.4, 31.9, 48.4, and 45.8 cases/100 cows/month in HGR, HNGR, CON-GR, and CON-NGR, respectively. Time to first lameness event was significantly higher in HGR (mean ± S.E; 8.12 ± 0.15) compared to CON-GR (7.36 ± 0.26), and in HNGR (8.05 ± 0.16) compared to CON-NGR (7.39 ± 0.23). The prevalence of hoof lesions in the enrolled cows was 36.9%, with a higher occurrence in CON-GR (48.8%) than HGR (23.2%), and in CON-NGR (52.6%) compared to HNGR (32.2%). The majority of hoof lesions were non-infectious in grazing (HGR vs. CON-GR; 21.3 vs. 33.3%) and non-grazing herds (HNGR vs. CON-NGR; 25.0 vs. 40.4%). The risk of lameness was higher in underconditioned cows (Hazard ratio; HR = 3.1, 95% CI 1.2–7.4), presence of hoof lesion (HR = 33.1, 95% CI 17.6–62.5), and there was variation between farms. Aside HT, lower parity (OR = 0.4, 95% CI 0.2–0.8), normal hock condition (OR = 0.06; 95% 0.01–0.29), and absence of overgrown hoof (OR = 0.4; 95% 0.2–0.7) were protective against non-infectious hoof lesions. Functional HT is beneficial as a lameness preventive strategy during lactation; however, ensuring older cows are in good body condition and free from hock injuries are equally important.

A one-year old female ostrich (Struthio camelus) was presented for surgical excision with the history of growth near left hock joint (ankle) and progressively increasing in size. The tumorous mass was surgically excised after sedation and local infiltrative anesthesia. Histopathological examination of the mass revealed a large number of fibrocytes and fibroblasts arranged in an irregular manner accompanied with high degree of neovascularisation. Few areas also showed infiltration of inflammatory cells, degenerative fibroblast cells, high mitotic figures and extensive local invasion to surrounding soft tissues. These features were indicative of clear malignancy and condition was diagnosed as a case of fibrosarcoma.

The objective of this study was to investigate the profiles of hair cortisol concentrations as an index of chronic stress in dairy cows in association with their health, nutrition, and reproductive parameters. For 25 Holstein dairy cows, hair was collected from the tail switch -19.2 ± 11.4, 44.8 ± 11.9, 103.0 ± 9.9, and 168.0 ± 9.7 days postpartum (L0, L1, L2, and L3, respectively). Body condition scores were negatively correlated with hair cortisol concentrations (r = -0.255), and hock health scores were positively correlated with hair cortisol concentrations (r = 0.236, p < 0.05). Hair cortisol concentrations during the postpartum period showed different patterns according to the time of first artificial insemination (AI) and fertility. Cows that were submitted to first AI by 86 days postpartum showed a peak hair cortisol concentration at L1, whereas cows with delayed first AI had a peak at L2. The aim of the study was to investigate the risk factors for formation of hock lesions in dairy cattle farms with different housing system. The study included 508 Black‑and‑white Holstein‑type cows from 14 dairy farms in different regions of Bulgaria. On cows a hock lesion assessment (scale 1 to 3) and body condition scoring (scale 1 to 5) were made. From the total number of cows, 231 cows (45.5 %) with score of 2 and 3 were reported, which clinical manifestation was from loss of hairs on the hock joint surface to swellings and wounds. A statistically significant effect of lactation period, body condition scores (BCS) and housing system on the hock assessment score was found. The least square means (LSM) for hock assessment score increased with the advancing of lactation period from 1.22 in cows to 60 days in milk (DIM) to 1.52 in cows after 120 DIM. The percentage of cows with BCS 3 and 3.5 was lower 1.5 to 2 times compared to cows with BCS 1.5. With the lowest mean hock assessment score (1.14), were the cows housed free group on a thick bedding. Tie‑stall housing system occupied an intermediate position with respect to hock assessment, only 1.4 % of cows were with a score of 3. The highest percentage of cows with varying degrees of hock lesions were reported in free‑stall housing system with using of rubber mats for stall floors, 75.5 % of the cows were with hock lesion assessment score 2 and 3. This percentage was slightly lower when small amounts of straw were placed on the rubber mats.

Skin lesions are commonly seen in dairy herds and have been associated with animal-, environmental-, and management factors. These lesions are not only a welfare concern, but they also affect profitability. Three areas on the cattle were examined for skin lesions: the hock, knee, and neck. Previous Canadian studies estimating the prevalence of lesions and the risk factors associated with them have not included the Maritime Provinces. In this study, 73 herds in the Maritime Provinces were chosen voluntarily to participate, with both tiestalls (n = 33) and freestalls (n = 40) represented. Within each herd, 67 to 90% of the lactating cows were selected and assessed for potential animal-, environmental-, and management-based risk factors. If producers were aware of the potential risk factors, this could help them reduce the prevalence in their herd. Leg lesions were scored on a 4-point scale (0-3) based on hair loss, swelling, and scabs, with a lesion defined as a score of 2 or 3 on at least 1 hock or knee. Necks were scored on a 3-point scale (0-2), with a lesion defined as score 2. The aim of the present study was to assess welfare and health parameters of broiler chickens housed in different group sizes. 6400 mixed-sex day-old broiler chicks were housed in four types of rectangular enclosures which provided 10 m2 [small], 30 m2 [medium], 100 m2 [large] and 500 m2 [very large] floor space. Per pen there were 100, 300, 1000 and 5000 birds, respectively and therefore constant density for all groups (10 birds/m2). Fifty birds per group were randomly selected as focus animals, and these birds were individually tagged to ease identification. The aim of this study was to explore lameness and the associations between lameness and health/production measures of animal welfare in commercial broiler production, using the Welfare Quality ® protocol for broilers. A total of 50 flocks were included in the sample and farm visits were conducted for lameness scoring at a mean age of 28.9 days. The aim of present study was to assess the status of welfare of indigenous cattle, based on certain animal-linked parameters: body condition (BCS), body hygiene (cleanliness), lameness, skin injuries, general condition, and flight distance. The study was ruled in eight herds (10 cows /herd) in Terai and Mid-hill region of Nepal from March to June 2014. Altogether 80 cattle kept in semi-intensive system were assessed using several indicators determined through specific methods. Out of 80 cattle, 2 (2.5%) had BCS between 1.5-2, considered as very thin cows; 49 (61.25%) had BCS between 2.25-2.75, considered as thin cows; 29 (36.25%) had BCS 3-3.75 considered as normal cows and no cows found with BCS more than 3.75 score; 69 (86.25%) had dung particles at their lower legs, 60 (75%) had dung particles at their flank region and 11(13.75%) had dung particles at their udder region; 4 (5%) were moderately lame, 27 (33.75%) had hairless spot on their different body parts(hock, knee joints, neck), 15 (18.75%) had swelling joints (knee joints); 10 (12.5%) showed fear at the observer’s approach. The general condition was good of all the assessed cows. The obtained results indicate that more than half of the assessed cows are thin and dirty which has a negative impact on their health and welfare. The main factors that affect the indigenous cattle welfare in Nepal are insufficiency of feeding, poor housing system, poor sanitation and hygiene maintenance, lack of treatment of injured/diseased cattle and somewhat poor human animal relationship.

Background Young Standardbred horses frequently develop fragments in joints. Some fragments represent osteochondrosis; others are considered developmental, but it is uncertain whether they result from preceding osteochondrosis. Osteochondrosis occurs as a consequence of failure of the cartilage canal blood supply and ischaemic chondronecrosis. In heritably predisposed foals, failure was associated with incorporation of vessels into bone. However, bacterial vascular failure was also recently documented in foals suffering spontaneous infections, proving that bacteria can cause osteochondral lesions in foals up to 150 days old. The aim was to determine prevalence of fetlock and hock lesions at screening age in Standardbred horses that survived infections before 6 months of age, and compare this to prevalence reported in the literature. Methods The material consisted of 28 Standardbred horses; 17 males and 11 females that presented and were diagnosed clinically with bacterial infections from 1 to 150 days of age (average: 41.3 days). A screening set of 8 radiographic projections was available from all 28 horses at 7–85 months of age (average: 23.6 months). Lesion prevalence was compared to three previously reported Standardbred cohorts. Results Osteochondral lesions were detected in one or more joints of 19/28 horses (67.9%); in the fetlock joint of 14/28 horses (50%) and the hock joint of 11/28 horses (39.3%). An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of lighting program, stocking density, and the provision of a perch on leg health variables as welfare indicators in broiler chickens. A total of 360 mixed sex Ross 308 1-D-old broiler chickens (180 male and 180 female) were placed in a completely randomized design with 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of lighting program (continuous or restricted), stocking density (12 or 18 birds/m2), and the provision of a perch (perch or without perch). The behaviour, welfare, and tibia characteristics of fast- and slow-growing chickens were evaluated in free-range and intensive production systems. A total of 720 birds of three strains were subjected to these systems after 21 days of rearing under the same intensive environment. Each treatment was replicated six times with 20 birds in each replicate. Data were collected for welfare aspects, including feather condition, footpad, hock joint and tonic immobility, behavioural features, especially feeding or foraging, sitting, walking, scratching, pecking and dust-bathing, and tibia characteristics, including weight, length, width, medullary canal diameter and robusticity index (4 - 8 weeks). Production system had significant effects on all welfare and behaviour aspects of the birds. However, tibia characteristics were not influenced by production system, except for medullary canal diameter. The strains differed significantly in welfare, tibia characteristics and behaviour. For example, the slow-growing strains had better feather condition, footpad and hock joint scores. Significant interactions of strain and production system were noted for all characteristics. It was recommended that Rhode Island Red chickens could be raised under either production system without compromising their welfare or causing adverse effects on leg health.

European farms for broiler breeders often have raised slatted areas in front of the nests, but in other regions of the world no raised slatted areas are provided. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a raised slatted area on leg health, mating behaviour and floor laying behaviour. Ten groups of 33 broiler breeder hens and three males were housed in two pen types: with or without a raised slatted area in front of the nests. Each pen had one plastic and one wooden nest. Between 25 and 31 weeks of age, ten marked hens per pen were weighed and assessed weekly on foot pad dermatitis, hock burn and wounds. At the end of week 31, animals were euthanized and bone strength of the tibia and humerus of these individuals was assessed. At 24, 27 and 30 weeks of age, mating behaviour was observed for an hour per pen, noting both numbers of successful and unsuccessful copulations. The number of eggs laid in the nests and on the floor was recorded daily between 20 and 31 weeks of age. Foot pad dermatitis scores were affected by age, but not by pen type. Generally, there were only minor issues with foot pad dermatitis (scores < 11 on a 0–100 scale), probably due to the young age of the hens. Body weight was not affected by pen type, while the prevalence of hock burns was too low to analyse and no difference in bone strength was found for the tibia and the humerus. Overall, mating behaviour was less frequent in pens with raised slats than in pens without raised slats (29 ± 2 vs 35 ± 3 times/h) and more frequent at 27 weeks of age than at 24 and 30 weeks of age (38 ± 1 vs 31 ± 4 and 27 ± 2 times/h). The pens with raised slats had a lower percentage of floor eggs than pens without raised slats (11.2 ± 0.4 vs 19.3 ± 0.5%). The wooden nest was preferred over the plastic nest as on average 63% of the eggs were laid in the wooden nest. This study shows that providing raised slats decreases mating behaviour and percentage of floor eggs, although its effects on leg health remain inconclusive.

Changes in body size are reflected in all aspects of skeletal support system and muscle-tendon mechanics, therefore also in entheseal size and morphology. Interspecies comparisons reveal evidence of low positive allometric scaling of entheseal size with body size, but this scaling within species does not deviate from isometry. This mainly isometric scaling should reflect in entheseal morphology because large individuals exert their muscles more than small ones just to move their heavier bodies. In this study, we performed a simulation experiment of both isometric and interspecies scaling to examine effects of increasing body size to entheseal strain in the hock extension of the horse. Computations for hock extension were modelled for mid-stance phase in canter or gallop with all weight on one hindlimb. Results from our simulation models suggest that: (1) Large horses put more strain on their entheseal surface areas than small horses when carrying only their own weight; (2) Small horses may strain their entheseal surface areas more than large horses when carrying the same absolute amount of weight regardless of body size. These results indicate that body size should be considered when reconstructing the use of archaeological horses and other equids as beasts of burden.
