The spatial distribution characteristics of Buddhist monasteries in Yunnan Province, a typical sample area of Buddhist diversity, have not been studied. Therefore, in view of the situation and from the perspective of Buddhist geography, samples of Buddhist monasteries from 540 cultural relic protection units at all levels were selected to examine the spatial differentiation characteristics and influencing factors of Buddhist monasteries in Yunnan Province. GIS spatial analysis was combined with fieldwork methods. The following results were obtained: 1) Buddhist monasteries in the province are generally distributed in agglomerations, being concentrated in Dali, Honghe, and Kunming. The spatial distribution density is centered around three core areas, with other more discrete areas. The Chinese Buddhist monasteries are distributed in an inverted U-shaped band in the central part of the province, the Tibetan Buddhist monasteries are distributed in a "single core, many centers" pattern, and the Theravada Buddhist monasteries are distributed in a "two-side dense, middle-sparse" pattern. 2) Laterally, Buddhist monasteries are mainly distributed in the Jinsha, Lancang, and Pearl River basins, with considerable differences between sub-basins. Vertically, the monasteries have a "three-step" distribution characteristic, which corresponds to the vertical landforms. 3) The complex human-geographic environment of Yunnan is a key factor in the differentiation of Buddhist monasteries. The geographical structure is a fundamental force that determines the spatially differentiated character of Buddhist monasteries. The central geographical location connecting the four directions relies on the geographical environment to form a balance of distribution of the three types of Buddhist monasteries. Landforms and elevations combine to affect the distribution of ethnic groups with different livelihoods based on elevation and thus affect the distribution of Buddhist monasteries. The cultural structure has contributed to the formation of a pluralistic coexistence pattern in exchanges among various monasteries. The exchange through river basin corridors may have led to the development of Chinese Buddhist monasteries in the eastern Yunnan Plateau. Tibetan Buddhist monasteries form agglomeration centers in Diqing and Lijiang, in the northern part of the Longitudinal Ridge Valley, and southern Buddhist monasteries form major distribution areas in Dehong, Xishuangbanna, and other locations. The strip-shaped ethnic corridors formed by different ethnic groups based on geographical space have a high spatial fit with the distribution of Buddhist monasteries. The linear space, with the ancient road serving as an axis, has promoted interactive development of Buddhist monasteries of different sects. The mode of governance, influenced by institutional structure, has promoted changes in the distribution range of various monasteries in different historical periods, and changes in the relationships among the central government, local government, and Tusi system have altered agglomeration and distribution of Buddhist monasteries.

Size and composition of γδ T cell populations change dramatically with tissue location, during development, and in disease. Given the functional differentiation of γδ T cell subsets, such shifts might alter the impact of γδ T cells on the immune system. To test this concept, and to determine if γδ T cells can affect other immune cells prior to an immune response, we examined non-immunized mice derived from strains with different genetically induced deficiencies in γδ T cells, for secondary changes in their immune system. We previously saw extensive changes in pre-immune antibodies and B cell populations. Here, we report effects on αβ T cells. Similarly to the B cells, αβ T cells evidently experience the influence of γδ T cells at late stages of their pre-immune differentiation, as single-positive heat stable antigen-low thymocytes. Changes in these and in mature αβ T cells were most prominent with memory-phenotype cells, including both CD8+ and CD4+ populations. As previously observed with B cells, most of the effects on αβ T cells were dependent on IL-4. Unexpectedly, IL-4 seemed to be produced mainly by αβ T cells in the non-immunized mice, albeit strongly regulated by γδ T cells. Similarly to our findings with B cells, changes of αβ T cells were less pronounced in mice lacking all γδ T cells than in mice lacking only some, suggesting that the composition of the γδ T cell population determines the nature of the γδ-influence on the other pre-immune lymphocytes.

Incorporating functionalized TiO2 microarchitectures or upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) into photoanodes is deemed to be two effective ways to boost the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Nonetheless, studies combining functionalized TiO2 and UCNPs for the development of composite photoanode films in DSSCs still remain scarce. In view of this, we present a facile strategy for the design and preparation of a multifunctional composite photoanode containing P25 nanoparticles, peanut-like (PN) TiO2 microstructures, and NaYF4:Yb,Er@NaYF4:Nd@SiO2 core–shell–shell UCNPs. It is found that the DSSC containing a dual-functional photoanode using PN TiO2 as a light-scattering layer and P25 as a transparent layer can achieve a photovoltaic efficiency of 9.01%, presenting a 26.37% enhancement over the blank device. More importantly, the addition of UCNPs can further enhance the photoelectric performance of the DSSC device, realizing an optimal photovoltaic efficiency of 10.58%, one of the highest reported efficiencies for UCNP-based DSSCs with the common N719 photosensitizer. Such a remarkable improvement is mainly due to a synergetic effect of the UCNPs absorbing the near-infrared light and of the PN TiO2 presenting excellent light-scattering potency. Specifically, steady-state experiments reveal that the best-performing device shows only a small efficiency loss after 120 h of testing, exhibiting good device stability. Resident memory T (Trm) cells which are specifically located in non-lymphoid tissues showed distinct phenotypes and functions compared to circulating memory T cells and were vital for the initiation of robust immune response within tissues. However, the heterogeneity in the transcriptional features, development pathways, and cancer response of Trm cells in the small intestine was not demonstrated. Here, we integrated scRNA-seq and scTCR-seq data pan-tissue T cells to explore the heterogeneity of Trm cells and their development pathways. Trm were enriched in tissue-specific immune response and those in the DUO specially interacted with B cells via TNF and MHC-I signatures. T cell lineage analyses demonstrated that Trm might be derived from the T_CD4/CD8 subset within the same organ or migrated from spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes. We compared the immune repertoire of Trm among organs and implied that clonotypes in both DUO and ILE were less expanded and hydrophilic TRB CDR3s were enriched in the DUO. We further demonstrated that Trm in the intestine infiltrated the colorectal cancer and several effector molecules were highly expressed. Finally, the TCGA dataset of colorectal cancer implied that the infiltration of Trm from the DUO and the ILE was beneficial for overall survival and the response to immune checkpoint blockade. To prevent potentially damaging inflammatory responses, the eye actively promotes local immune tolerance via a variety of mechanisms. Owing to trauma, infection, or other ongoing autoimmunity, these mechanisms sometimes fail, and an autoimmune disorder may develop in the eye. In mice of the C57BL/10 (B10) background, autoimmune keratitis often develops spontaneously, particularly in the females. Its incidence is greatly elevated in the absence of γδ T cells, such that ∼80% of female B10.TCRδ(-/-) mice develop keratitis by 18 wk of age. In this article, we show that CD8(+) αβ T cells are the drivers of this disease, because adoptive transfer of CD8(+), but not CD4(+), T cells to keratitis-resistant B10.TCRβ/δ(-/-) hosts induced a high incidence of keratitis. This finding was unexpected because in other autoimmune diseases, more often CD4(+) αβ T cells, or both CD4(+) and CD8(+) αβ T cells, mediate the disease. Compared with wild-type B10 mice, B10.TCRδ(-/-) mice also show increased percentages of peripheral memory phenotype CD8(+) αβ T cells, along with an elevated frequency of CD8(+) αβ T cells biased to produce inflammatory cytokines. In addition, B10.TCRδ-/- mice have fewer peripheral CD4(+) CD25(+) Foxp3(+) αβ regulatory T cells (Tregs), which express lower levels of receptors needed for Treg development and function. Together, these observations suggest that in B10 background mice, γδ T cells are required to generate adequate numbers of CD4(+) CD25(+) Foxp3(+) Tregs, and that in B10.TCRδ(-/-) mice a Treg deficiency allows dysregulated effector or memory CD8(+) αβ T cells to infiltrate the cornea and provoke an autoimmune attack.
