The parturients were randomly allocated to receiving either intravenous infusion of 0.3-mg/kg esketamine combined with 0.5-μg/kg dexmedetomidine (group ED, n=76), 0.5-μg/kg dexmedetomidine (group D, n=76), or normal saline (group C, n=76) after umbilical cord clamping. The primary outcome was intraoperative visceral pain. Secondary outcomes included the visual analog scale (VAS) score for pain evaluation and other intraoperative complications.Results: The incidence of visceral pain was lower in group ED [9 (12.7%)] than in group D [32 (43.8%)] and group C [36 (48.6%), P < 0.0001]. The VAS score was also lower in group ED when exploring abdominal cavity [0 (0), P < 0.0001] and suturing the muscle layer [0 (0), P =0.036]. The mean arterial pressure was higher in group D [83 (9) mmHg] and group ED [81 (11) mmHg] than in group C [75 (10) mmHg, P < 0.0001] after solution infusion. The heart rate after infusion of the solution was lower in group D [80 (12) bpm] than in group C [86 (14) bpm] and group ED [85 (12) bpm, P = 0.016]. The incidence of transient neurologic or mental symptoms was higher in group ED compared to group C and group D (76.1% vs 18.9% vs 23.3%, P< 0.0001).Conclusion: During cesarean section, 0.3-mg/kg esketamine combined with 0.5-μg/kg dexmedetomidine can alleviate visceral traction pain and provide stable hemodynamics. Parturients receiving this regimen may experience transient neurologic or mental symptoms that can spontaneously resolve at the end of the surgery.Plain language summary: Some parturients endure experience indescribable pain and discomfort during fetal delivery. Esketamine combined with dexmedetomidine can alleviate this pain during cesarean section under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to examine changes of urine exosomal peptide levels after thyroidectomy in patients with thyroid cancer to determine if levels can predict the risk of recurrence.Methods: Patients > 20 years old as newly diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer who had received a thyroidectomy were recruited. Urine samples were collected at 12 months after enrollment to the study, and 1 year later. Urine exosomes containing different peptides were identified and compared.Results: A total of 70 patients were enrolled in the study, and were classified by the interval between surgery and enrollment: 42 patients with < 5 years between surgery and enrollment, 14 patients between 5– 10 years, and 14 patients longer than 10 years. No recurrence was observed in any patient during the 2 years after enrollment. No significant differences were found in the levels of serum proteins or urine exosomal peptides between groups, or between intervals. Known risk factors for high-risk thyroid cancer had only a mild correlation with serum protein levels and urine exosomal peptides.Conclusion: Our study revealed the long-term basal fluctuation ranges of serum proteins and urine exosomal peptides in patients with thyroid cancer who underwent thyroidectomy. For high-risk patients after thyroidectomy, concentrations of serum proteins or urine exosomal peptides within the ranges may indicate there is a lower risk of thyroid cancer recurrence during long-term follow-up.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03488134.Keywords: thyroid cancer, urine exosome, peptide, thyroglobulin, recurrence

The article describes the case of a 63-year old man diagnosed with primary colonic natural-killer T-cell lymphoma mimicking Crohn's disease. The patient demonstrated a diffuse edematous wall of the colon, multiple large and deep skipped ulcers, and infiltration of lymphoplasmacytic cells and neutrophils in lamina propria. He underwent laparoscopy with a colostomy and subtotal colectomy. The clinical presentations of natural-killer T-cell lymphoma are discussed

Glutathione redox cycling is important for cell cycle regulation, but its mechanisms are not well understood. We previously identified a small-sized mutant, suppressor of mat3 15-1 (smt15-1) that has elevated cellular glutathione. Here, we demonstrated that SMT15 is a chloroplast sulphate transporter. Reducing expression of γ-GLUTAMYLCYSTEINE SYNTHETASE, encoding the rate-limiting enzyme required for glutathione biosynthesis, corrected the size defect of smt15-1 cells. Overexpressing GLUTATHIONE SYNTHETASE (GSH2) recapitulated the small-size phenotype of smt15-1 mutant, confirming the role of glutathione in cell division. Hence, SMT15 may regulate chloroplast sulphate concentration to modulate cellular glutathione levels. In wild-type cells, glutathione and/or thiol-containing molecules (GSH/thiol) accumulated in the cytosol at the G1 phase and decreased as cells entered the S/M phase. While the cytosolic GSH/thiol levels in the small-sized mutants, smt15-1 and GSH2 overexpressors, mirrored those of wild-type cells (accumulating during G1 and declining at early S/M phase), GSH/thiol was specifically accumulated in the basal bodies at early S/M phase in the small-sized mutants. Therefore, we propose that GSH/thiol-mediated redox signalling in the basal bodies may regulate mitotic division number in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Background: Neutrophils are vital constituents of the immune response in the vaginal environment, playing a pivotal role in the defense against trichomoniasis. Earlier studies have shown that Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) can release leukotriene B4 (LTB4), a molecule that attracts and activates neutrophils. Additionally, secretory products from this parasite can induce the production of interleukin-8 (IL-8) in mast cells and neutrophils, which further recruits neutrophils to the infection site. The precise reasons behind T. vaginalis actively promoting interaction between parasites and neutrophils rather than inhibiting the inflammatory response remain unclear., Results: In this study, we collected conditioned medium to elucidate the intricate dynamics between T. vaginalis and human neutrophils. We conducted a comprehensive profiling of soluble excretory/secretory proteins (ESPs), identifying 192 protein spots, of which 94 were successfully characterized through mass spectrometry analysis. Notably, the majority of induced ESPs from co-cultivation exhibited consistency with the trichomonad and neutrophil standalone groups, except for lactoferrin, which was observed exclusively following the interaction between neutrophils and T. vaginalis. The secretion of lactoferrin was determined to be a contact-dependent process. Background: Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) poses a clinical challenge and requires a combination of systemic therapy and conversion surgery. Although first-line chemotherapy and targeted therapy are considered the standard treatments for mCRC, the role of primary tumor resection (PTR) in asymptomatic synchronous mCRC with unresectable metastatic lesion after initial therapy remains relatively underexplored., Materials: A retrospective review was conducted from January 2015 to January 2021, involving 74 patients with synchronous mCRC who received bevacizumab plus FOFIRI as first-line systemic therapy. All 74 patients had unresectable metastatic lesions confirmed through multidisciplinary team discussion. Patient characteristics, PTR data, and radiotherapy (RT) and overall survival (OS) outcomes were analyzed. The patients were categorized into a "PTR" group and a "No PTR" group and then further stratified into "4A," "4B," and "4C" subgroups based on the initial mCRC stage. Additionally, four subgroups-namely "PTR( +)/RT( +)," "PTR( +)/RT( -)," "PTR( -)/RT( +)," and "PTR( -)/RT( -)"-were formed to assess the combined effects of PTR and RT., Results: The median OS for all the patients was 23.8 months (20.5-27.1 months). The "PTR" group exhibited a significantly higher median OS of 25.9 months (21.3-30.5 months) compared with 21.4 months (15.8-27.1 months) in the "No PTR" group (p = 0.048). Subgroup analyses revealed a trend of improved survival with PTR in patients with stage IVA and IVB; however, the results were not statistically significant (p = 0.116 and 0.493, respectively). A subgroup analysis of PTR and RT combinations revealed no significant difference in median OS rates., Conclusion: For asymptomatic mCRC with synchronous unresectable distant metastasis, PTR following first-line therapy with bevacizumab plus FOLFIRI may provide a potential survival benefit, particularly in stage IVA/IVB patients compared with stage IVC patients. Additionally, RT for primary tumor did not provide an additional OS benefit in mCRC with unresectable metastasis. Background: Ageism is prejudice or discrimination against different age groups, particularly older people. As senior nursing students in the last year of their studies prepare to enter the workforce, it is imperative to understand their level of ageism because of the high probability that they will care for older people during their nursing careers due to the global aging population. However, most research has focused on nursing students' knowledge and attitudes regarding older adults, and few studies have specifically investigated ageism among senior nursing students., Objective: This study aimed to understand ageism among senior nursing students and associated factors., Design: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study., Settings and Participants: In total, 249 senior students from 16 four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs in Taiwan were recruited. Inclusion criteria were (1) a senior student enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and (2) the ability to read Chinese., Methods: Data were collected using an online questionnaire consisting of two parts: demographic characteristics and the Fraboni Scale of Ageism. The frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple linear regression were used to analyze data., Results: The average score for ageism among senior nursing students was 61.60 ± 7.73, out of a maximum of 116. Having a higher level of concern about ageism issues and having had grandparents who were primary caregivers during childhood were linked to a lower degree of ageism. The only predictor of senior nursing students' ageism was the extent of their concern about ageism issues (F = 18.47, p < .001)., Conclusions: Senior nursing students demonstrated a moderate level of ageism. Wnt-5a is a protein encoded by the WNT5A gene and is a ligand for the receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 (ROR2). However, its biological impact on clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remains unclear. In this study, the prognostic significance of concurrent WNT5A and ROR2 expression levels was observed to predict unfavorable overall survival and disease-specific survival. High Wnt-5a expression was detected in a ccRCC cell line panel but not in HK-2 cells, a normal proximal tubular cell line. Inhibition of DNA methyltransferase by 5-azacytidine in 786-O and Caki-2 cells resulted in Wnt-5a up-regulation, indicating potential epigenetic modification. Furthermore, there was a repression of cell movement in vitro and metastatic colonization in vivo on WNT5A and ROR2 knockdown. Suppressions of angiogenesis in vivo and tubular-like structure formation in endothelial cells in vitro were also observed after silencing WNT5A and ROR2 expression. In addition, alteration in the downstream gene signature of the Wnt-5a-ROR2 signaling was similar to that in metastasis-associated gene 1-β-catenin axis. Moreover, prunetin treatment reversed the gene signature derived from Wnt-5a-ROR2 signaling activation and to abolish ccRCC cell migration and proliferation. Overall, this study demonstrates the clinical and functional significance of the Wnt-5a-ROR2 axis and identifies prunetin as a potential precision medicine for patients with ccRCC harboring aberrant Wnt-5a-ROR2 signaling pathways., (Copyright © 2024 American Society for Investigative Pathology. Introduction: Hemodialysis patients rely on stable vascular access to perform effective hemodialysis and reach good dialysis quality. However, an obstructed or under-matured arteriovenous fistula (AVF) may increase infection rate and mortality in hemodialysis patients. Far infrared (FIR) therapy might help to promote AVF maturation and reduce obstruction rate. Therefore, this meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of FIR therapy on AVF obstruction rate and maturation., Material and Method: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and other databases which provide publications in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of FIR to improve AVF in patients with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) or HD (hemodialysis) were used to collect articles which published before February 2023. Two authors selected relevant articles independently based on pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and assessed the quality of the articles by using the Cochrane Handbook before performing a meta-analysis in Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4 software., Results: Four RCTs with 475 patients were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the FIR therapy groups had better physiological maturation at 3 months (RR = 1.22; 95% CI = 1.07 to 1.39; p = .002) and clinical maturation at 12 months (RR = 1.35; 95% CI = 1.14 to 1.60; p < .001) than the control groups without FIR therapy. The obstruction rates within 12 months were much lower in the FIR therapy groups than in the control groups (RR = 0.24; 95% CI = 0.08 to 0.68; p = .007), also, there was no statistical heterogeneity., Conclusions: FIR could promote fistula maturation and reduce the incidence of AVF obstruction., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Wu et al. Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers exhibit unique valleytronics properties due to the dependency of the coupled valley and spin state at the hexagonal corner of the first Brillouin zone. Precisely controlling valley spin-polarization via manipulating the electron population enables its application in valley-based memory or quantum technologies. This study uncovered the uncompensated spins of the antiferromagnetic nickel oxide (NiO) serving as the ferromagnetic (FM) order to induce valley spin-polarization in molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) monolayers via the magnetic proximity effect (MPE). Spin-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy (SR-PL) was employed to observe MoS 2 , where the spin-polarized trions appear to be responsible for the MPE, leading to a valley magnetism. Results indicate that local FM order from the uncompensated surface of NiO could successfully induce significant valley spin-polarization in MoS 2 with the depolarization temperature approximately at 100 K, which is relatively high compared to the related literature. This study reveals new perspectives in that the precise control over the surface orientation of AFMs serves as a crystallographic switch to activate the MPE and the magnetic sustainability of the trion state is responsible for the observed valley spin-polarization with the increasing temperature, which promotes the potential of AFM materials in the field of exchange-coupled Van der Waals heterostructures.

In this study, we synthesized MOF/COF hybrid material (NH 2 -MOF-5/MCOF) by integrating NH 2 -MOF-5 (Zn) with a melamine-based COF (MCOF) to target the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. Characterization using SEM, XRD, XPS, FT-IR, and UV-DRS confirmed the synthesized MOF/COF hybrid's exceptional photocatalytic performance under visible light. The addition of H 2 O 2 significantly enhanced the photocatalytic degradation, achieving removal rates of 90%, 92%, and 57% for 11.75 mg L -1 , 30 mg L -1 , and 83 mg L -1 of MB, respectively. Kinetic studies revealed first-order kinetics, with a rate constant nearly 3.5 times higher with added H 2 O 2 . We proposed a comprehensive photocatalytic mechanism elucidated through energy band structure analysis and scavenger tests. Our findings revealed the formation of a heterojunction between NH 2 -MOF-5 and MCOF, which mitigates electron-hole recombination, with ∙OH identified as the principal species governing methylene blue degradation. Moreover, the NH 2 -MOF-5/MCOF hybrid displayed excellent reusability and chemical stability over six cycles. Notably, this H 2 O 2 -assisted hybrid material demonstrated the removal of 99% of ibuprofen, a pharmaceutical drug, showcasing its broad applicability in removing organic contaminants in aqueous solutions, thereby holding great promise for wastewater treatment., (© 2024. Background: Intestinal parasitic infections are the most common infectious diseases among Southeast Asian migrant workers in Taiwan, especially for infections with Blastocystis hominis. However, little is known about the impact of Blastocystis subtypes (STs) on the gut microbiota., Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the prevalence of intestinal parasites in a teaching hospital in Northern Taiwan in the period of 2015-2019. Blastocystis-positive stool specimens were collected for ST analysis by polymerase chain reaction in 2020. Intestinal microbiota analyses of different Blastocystis STs and Blastocystis-free individuals were conducted by 16S rRNA sequencing., Results: A total of 13,859 subjects were analyzed, of which 1802 cases (13%) were diagnosed with intestinal parasitic infections. B. hominis infections were the most prevalent (n = 1546, 85.7%). ST analysis of Blastocystis-positive samples (n = 150) indicated that ST1 was the most common type, followed by ST3, ST4, ST2, ST7, and ST5. Different Blastocystis STs (ST1, ST3, and ST4) were associated with distinct richness and diversity of the microbiota. Taxonomic profiles revealed that Akkermansia muciniphila was significantly enriched for all analyzed Blastocystis STs, whereas Holdemanella biformis was more abundant in the Blastocystis-free group. Additionally, Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens and Coprococcus eutactus were specifically more abundant in ST3 carriers than in non-infected individuals., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that A. muciniphila is positively associated with all Blastocystis STs, while H. biformis was negatively associated with them. Background: Diminished muscle protein synthesis in cirrhosis leads to reduced strength and mass, impacting daily activities and overall quality of life., Aims: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of exercise intervention in body composition, exercise capacity, fatigue, and quality of life in patients with liver cirrhosis., Methods: A systematic search of medical databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and CINAHL, was executed from their inception to November 2022. The inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials comparing exercise interventions with a control group that did not receive exercise interventions., Results: From the initially identified 2,565 articles, eight studies with a total of 220 patients were eligible for inclusion in this meta-analysis. According to the meta-analysis, exercise significantly improved the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) by 68.93 m (95% CI 14.29-123.57) compared to the control group. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis revealed that combing exercise with amino acid supplementation had a greater positive effect on the 6MWD (MD = 144.72, 95% CI 87.44-202.01). Exercise also significantly increased thigh circumference (MD = 1.26, 95% CI 0.12-2.39) and the thigh ultrasound average compression index (MD = 0.07, 95% CI 0.00-0.14). Moreover, exercise significantly decreased fatigue levels by 0.7 points in patients with liver cirrhosis (95% CI 0.38-1.03). However, no significant effects were observed on body mass index (BMI), fat mass, fat-free mass, and quality of life., Conclusions: Exercise can improve exercise capacity, thigh muscle thickness, and fatigue in patients with cirrhosis, but it does not have a significant impact on fat mass, BMI, or quality of life., (© 2024. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of immersion in water on deformation of maxillary denture bases created with CAD/CAM and heat-polymerized resin fabrication techniques under loading condi8ons., Materials and Methods: 2-mm-thick denture bases were fabricated using four techniques: CAD/CAM milling (CCM; Polywax PMMA blank, Yamachi PMMA disk Yamahachi Dental); 3D prin8ng (3DP; BV005, NextDent Base); compression molding (CM; Luciton 199, Dentsply Sirona); and injec8on molding (IM; Ivobase, Ivoclar; n = 5 per group). Three static 49-N loads were applied perpendicular to each denture base, and the mean strain value (MSV) was recorded with strain gauges a[ached to the denture surface. The denture bases were stored at 37°C in distilled water for 14 and 28 days, and the MSVs under the same static load were recorded., Results: The highest MSVs were observed at the posterior palatal seal, tuberosity, and labial notches of the dentures. The lowest MSVs were recorded for the CCM group and then the CM and IM groups. The highest MSVs were recorded for the 3DP group. No significant differences in regional MSVs (P > .05) were observed among the CCM, CM, and IM aber 14 and 28 days in water. Large devia8ons in MSVs were recorded for the 3DP group across the measurement sites aber water exposure (P < .05)., Conclusions: CCM had the lowest denture deformation under static loading. After immersion in water, the deformation changes under static loading were stable for CCM, CM, and IM. However, variations among the materials used in 3DP group influenced the mechanical performance and presented larger deformations.

Background: The aim of the study was to investigate the muscle differences in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) using opportunistic low-dose chest CT and to compare different methods for the segmentation of muscle in children., Methods: This single center retrospective study enrolled children with OI and controls undergoing opportunistic low-dose chest CT obtained during the COVID pandemic. From the CT images, muscle size (cross-sectional area) and density (mean Hounsfield Units [HU]) of the trunk muscles were measured at the mid-T4 and the mid-T10 level using two methods, the fixed thresholds and the Gaussian mixture model. The Bland-Altman method was also used to compute the strength of agreement between two methods. Comparison of muscle results between OI and controls were analyzed with Student t tests., Results: 20 children with OI (mean age, 9.1 ± 3.3 years, 15 males) and 40 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled. Mean differences between two methods were good. Children with OI had lower T4 and T10 muscle density than controls measured by the fixed thresholds (41.2 HU vs. 48.0 HU, p < 0.01; 37.3 HU vs. 45.9 HU, p < 0.01). However, children with OI had lower T4 muscle size, T4 muscle density, T10 muscle size and T10 muscle density than controls measured by the Gaussian mixture model (110.9 vs. 127.2 cm 2 , p = 0.03; 44.6 HU vs. 51.3 HU, p < 0.01; 72.6 vs. 88.0 cm 2 , p = 0.01; 41.6 HU vs. 50.3 HU, p < 0.01, respectively)., Conclusions: Children with OI had lower trunk muscle density indicating that OI might also impair muscle quality. Background: The initial step to interpreting putative biological functions from comparative multi-omics studies usually starts from a differential expressed gene list followed by functional enrichment analysis (FEA). However, most FEA packages are designed exclusively for humans and model organisms. Although parasitic protozoan is the most important pathogen in the tropics, no FEA package is available for protozoan functional (ProFun) enrichment analysis. To speed up comparative multi-omics research on parasitic protozoans, we constructed ProFun, a web-based, user-friendly platform for the research community., Methods: ProFun utilizes the Docker container, ShinyProxy, and R Shiny to construct a scalable web service with load-balancing infrastructure. We have integrated a series of visual analytic functions, in-house scripts, and custom-made annotation packages to create three analytical modules for 40 protozoan species: (1) Gene Overlaps; (2) Over-representation Analysis (ORA); (3) Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA)., Results: We have established ProFun, a web server for functional enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes. FEA becomes as simple as pasting a list of gene IDs into the textbox of our website. Users can customize enrichment parameters and results with just one click. The intuitive web interface and publication-ready charts enable users to reveal meaningful biological events and pinpoint potential targets for further studies., Conclusion: ProFun is the first web application that enables gene functional enrichment analysis of parasitic protozoans. In addition to supporting FEA analysis, ProFun also allows the comparison of FEA results across complicated experimental designs. A-to-I RNA editing, catalyzed by the ADAR protein family, significantly contributes to the diversity and adaptability of mammalian RNA signatures, aligning with developmental and physiological needs. Yet, the functions of many editing sites are still to be defined. The Unc80 gene stands out in this context due to its brain-specific expression and the evolutionary conservation of its codon-altering editing event. The precise biological functions of Unc80 and its editing, however, are still largely undefined. In this study, we first demonstrated that Unc80 editing occurs in an ADAR2-dependent manner and is exclusive to the brain. By employing the CRISPR/Cas9 system to generate Unc80 knock-in mouse models that replicate the natural editing variations, our findings revealed that mice with the "gain-of-editing" variant ( Unc80 G/G ) exhibit heightened basal neuronal activity in critical olfactory regions, compared to the "loss-of-editing" ( Unc80 S/S ) counterparts. Moreover, an increase in glutamate levels was observed in the olfactory bulbs of Unc80 G/G mice, indicating altered neurotransmitter dynamics. Behavioral analysis of odor detection revealed distinctive responses to novel odors-both Unc80 deficient ( Unc80 +/ - ) and Unc80 S/S mice demonstrated prolonged exploration times and heightened dishabituation responses. Further elucidating the olfactory connection of Unc80 editing, transcriptomic analysis of the olfactory bulb identified significant alterations in gene expression that corroborate the behavioral and physiological findings. Collectively, our research advances the understanding of Unc80 's neurophysiological functions and the impact of its editing on the olfactory sensory system, shedding light on the intricate molecular underpinnings of olfactory perception and neuronal activity.

Background: V. canescens Wall, a plant renowned for its ethno-medical properties, was investigated in this study for its antioxidant potential based on its wide therapeutic applications in traditional healthcare systems. The study aimed to assess the antioxidant potential of the plant extract/fractions and to predict the active phytochemicals using computational techniques. Methods: Five fractions were obtained from the crude methanolic extract of Viola canescens, and six concentrations (25, 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 μg/mL) were prepared for each fraction. The antioxidant activity of these fractions was evaluated using the Tetraoxomolybdate (VI) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. In-silico docking studies and molecular dynamic simulations were conducted to further elucidate the molecular interactions underlying the antioxidant activity. Results: The aqueous extract of V. canescens exhibited significant antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity against DPPH. Additionally, the crude flavonoid extract demonstrated moderate activity with IC 50 value of 57.863 μg/mL, indicating potent inhibition of cell growth. In-silico docking studies revealed a strong interaction between emetine and the aromatase protein, suggesting its potential as an antioxidant. Conclusion: The study findings highlight the antioxidant potential of V. canescens extract, indicating its suitability as a source of natural antioxidants. Background: Trichomonas vaginalis is parasitic protozoan that causes human urogenital infections. Accumulated reports indicated that exosomes released by this parasite play a crucial role in transmitting information and substances between cells during host-parasite interactions. Current knowledge on the protein contents in T. vaginalis exosome is mainly generated from three previous studies that used different T. vaginalis isolates as an experimental model. Whether T. vaginalis exosomes comprise a common set of proteins (core exosome proteome) is still unclear., Methods: To explore the core exosome proteome in T. vaginalis, we used liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to identify the contents of sucrose ultracentrifugation-enriched exosome and supernatant fractions isolated from six isolates., Results: Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the presence of exosomes in the enriched fraction. Proteomic analysis identified a total of 1870 proteins from exosomal extracts. There were 1207 exosomal-specific proteins after excluding 436 'non-core exosomal proteins'. Among these, 72 common exosomal-specific proteins were expressed in all six isolates. Compared with three published T. vaginalis exosome proteome datasets, we identified 16 core exosomal-specific proteins. These core exosomal-specific proteins included tetraspanin (TvTSP1), the classical exosome marker, and proteins mainly involved in catalytic activity and binding such as ribosomal proteins, ras-associated binding (Rab) proteins, and heterotrimeric G proteins., Conclusions: Our study highlighted the importance of using supernatant fraction from exosomal extract as a control to eliminate 'non-core exosomal proteins'. The fabrication of red fluorescent hybrid mesoporous silica-based nanosensor materials has promised the bioimaging and selective detection of toxic pollutants in aqueous solutions. In this study, we present a hybrid mesoporous silica nanosensor in which the propidium iodide (PI) was used to conveniently integrate into the mesopore walls using bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl silane) precursors. Various characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), N 2 adsorption-desorption, zeta potential, particle size analysis, thermogravimetric, and UV-visible analysis were used to analyze the prepared materials. The prepared PI integrated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (PI-MSNs) selective metal ion sensing capabilities were tested with a variety of heavy metal ions (100 mM), including Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Al 3+ , Mg 2+ , Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ ions. Among the investigated metal ions, the prepared PI-MSNs demonstrated selective monitoring of Fe 3+ ions with a significant visible colorimetric pink color change into orange and quenching of pink fluorescence in an aqueous suspension. The selective sensing behavior of PI-MSNs might be due to the interaction of Fe 3+ ions with the integrated PI functional fluorophore present in the mesopore walls. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is effective for movement disorders, particularly Parkinson's disease (PD). However, a closed-loop DBS system using reinforcement learning (RL) for automatic parameter tuning, offering enhanced energy efficiency and the effect of thalamus restoration, is yet to be developed for clinical and commercial applications. In this research, we instantiate a basal ganglia-thalamic (BGT) model and design it as an interactive environment suitable for RL models. Four finely tuned RL agents based on different frameworks, namely Soft Actor-Critic (SAC), Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TD3), Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), and Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C), are established for further comparison. Within the implemented RL architectures, the optimized TD3 demonstrates a significant 67% reduction in average power dissipation when compared to the open-loop system while preserving the normal response of the simulated BGT circuitry. As a result, our method mitigates thalamic error responses under pathological conditions and prevents overstimulation. In summary, this study introduces a novel approach to implementing an adaptive parameter-tuning closed-loop DBS system. Leveraging the advantages of TD3, our proposed approach holds significant promise for advancing the integration of RL applications into DBS systems, ultimately optimizing therapeutic effects in future clinical trials.

We recently reported that some adenosine binding aptamers can also bind caffeine and theophylline with around 20-fold lower affinities. This discovery led to the current work to examine the cross-binding of adenosine to theophylline aptamers. For the DNA aptamer for theophylline, cross-binding to adenosine was observed, and the affinity was 18 to 38-fold lower for adenosine based on assays using isothermal titration calorimetry and ThT fluorescence spectroscopy. The binding complexes were characterized using NMR spectroscopy, and both adenosine and theophylline showed an overall similar binding structure to the DNA theophylline aptamer, although small differences were also observed. In contrast, the RNA aptamer did not show binding to adenosine, although both aptamers have very similar relative selectivity for various methylxanthines including caffeine. After a negative selection, a few new aptamers with completely different primary sequences for theophylline were obtained and they did not show binding to adenosine. Thus, there are many ways for aptamers to bind theophylline and some can have cross-binding to adenosine. In biology, theophylline, caffeine, and adenosine can bind to the same protein receptors to regulate sleep, and their binding to the same DNA motifs may suggest an early role of nucleic acids in similar regulatory functions., (© 2023 The Authors. The process of peak picking and quality assessment for multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) data demands significant human effort, especially for signals with low abundance and high interference. Although multiple peak-picking software packages are available, they often fail to detect peaks with low quality and do not report cases with low confidence. Furthermore, visual examination of all chromatograms is still necessary to identify uncertain or erroneous cases. This study introduces HeapMS, a web service that uses artificial intelligence to assist with peak picking and the quality assessment of MRM chromatograms. HeapMS applies a rule-based filter to remove chromatograms with low interference and high-confidence peak boundaries detected by Skyline. Additionally, it transforms two histograms (representing light and heavy peptides) into a single encoded heatmap and performs a two-step evaluation (quality detection and peak picking) using image convolutional neural networks. HeapMS offers three categories of peak picking: uncertain peak picking that requires manual inspection, deletion peak picking that requires removal or manual re-examination, and automatic peak picking. HeapMS acquires the chromatogram and peak-picking boundaries directly from Skyline output. The output results are imported back into Skyline for further manual inspection, facilitating integration with Skyline. HeapMS offers the benefit of detecting chromatograms that should be deleted or require human inspection. Based on defined categories, it can significantly reduce human workload and provide consistent results. Furthermore, by using heatmaps instead of histograms, HeapMS can adapt to future updates in image recognition models. The HeapMS is available at: https://github.com/ccllabe/HeapMS.

This paper proposes a Swiss-roll-type mini-reformer employing a copper-zinc catalyst for high-efficient SRM process. Although the commercially available copper-zinc catalysts commonly used in cylindrical-type reformers provide decent conversion rates in the short term, their long-term durability still requires improvement, mainly due to temperature variations in the reformer, catalyst loading, and thermal sintering issues. This Swiss-roll-shaped mini-reformer is designed to improve thermal energy preservation/temperature uniformity by using dual spiral channels to improve the long-term durability while maintaining methanol-reforming efficiency. It was fabricated on a copper plate that was 80 mm wide, 80 mm long, and 4 mm high with spiral channels that were 2 mm deep, 4 mm wide, and 350 mm long. To optimize the design and reformer operation, the catalyst porosity, gas hourly speed velocity (GHSV), operation temperature, and fuel feeding rate are investigated. Swiss-roll-type reformers may require higher driving pressures but can provide better thermal energy preservation and temperature uniformity, posing a higher conversion rate for the same amount of catalyst when compared with other geometries. By carefully adjusting the catalyst bed porosity, locations, and catalyst loading amount as well as other conditions, an optimized gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) can be obtained (14,580 mL/g·h) and lead to not only a high conversion rate (96%) and low carbon monoxide generation rate (0.98%) but also a better long-term durability (decay from 96% to 88.12% after 60 h operation time) for SRM processes. The decay rate, 0.13%/h, after 60 h of operation, is five-folds lower than that (0.67%/h, 0.134%/h) of a commercial cylindrical-type fixed-bed reactor with a commercial catalyst.

Background: Several brow-lift techniques have been used to prevent brow ptosis after blepharoplasty. For example, both internal and external browpexies have been adopted worldwide. However, few studies have compared these two methods. The authors compared postoperative eyebrow position changes between upper eyelid skin excision, internal browpexy, and external browpexy., Methods: The authors retrospectively reviewed the cases of 87 patients who underwent upper blepharoplasty performed by a single clinician at their institute between April of 2018 and June of 2020. Patients with routine outpatient photographs taken before and after surgery were enrolled in the study. ImageJ was used to measure brow height at eight points in each eye. Brow height changes were compared among the three groups., Results: Routine photographs were available for 68 patients (133 eyes). Thirty-nine patients underwent internal browpexy (78 eyes), nine underwent external browpexy (17 eyes), and 20 underwent upper eyelid skin excisions (38 eyes). Three months after surgery, significant elevation was noted on the lateral side of the brow in the internal browpexy group and across the whole brow in the external browpexy group. In the upper eyelid skin excision group, whole brow ptosis was observed. Brow-lift outcomes were better in the external than in the internal browpexy group, whereas both browpexy groups showed better outcomes than the upper eyelid skin excision group., Conclusions: Within 3 months of surgery, both internal and external browpexy provided significant brow-lift effects, preventing brow ptosis caused by blepharoplasty with skin excision. The classical DNA aptamer for adenosine and ATP was selected twice using ATP as the target in 1995 and 2005, respectively. In 2022, this motif appeared four more times from selections using adenosine, ATP, theophylline, and caffeine as targets, suggesting that this aptamer can also bind methylxanthines. In this work, using thioflavin T fluorescence spectroscopy, this classical DNA aptamer showed K d values for adenosine, theophylline, and caffeine of 9.5, 101, and 131 μM, respectively, and similar K d values were obtained using isothermal titration calorimetry. Binding to the methylxanthines was also observed for the newly selected Ade1301 aptamer but not for the Ade1304 aptamer. The RNA aptamer for ATP also had no binding to the methylxanthines. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed using the classical DNA and RNA aptamers based on their NMR structures, and the simulation results were consistent with the experimental observations, explaining the selectivity profiles. This study suggests that a broader range of target analogues need to be tested for aptamers. For the detection of adenosine and ATP, the Ade1304 aptamer is a better choice due to its better selectivity.

Glucose can be isomerized into fructose and dehydrated into key platform biochemicals, following the "bio-refinery concept". However, this process generates black and intractable substances called humin, which possess a polymeric furanic-type structure. In this study, glucose-derived humin (GDH) was obtained by reacting D-glucose with an allylamine catalyst in a deep eutectic solvent medium, followed by a carbonization step. GDH was used as a low-cost, green, and reusable adsorbent for removing cationic methylene blue (MB) dye from water. The morphology of carbonized GDH differs from pristine GDH. The removal efficiencies of MB dye using pristine GDH and carbonized GDH were 52% and 97%, respectively. Temperature measurements indicated an exothermic process following pseudo-first-order kinetics, with adsorption behavior described by the Langmuir isotherm. The optimum parameters were predicted using the response surface methodology and found to be a reaction time of 600 min, an initial dye concentration of 50 ppm, and a GDH weight of 0.11 g with 98.7% desirability. The MB dye removal rate optimized through this model was 96.85%, which was in good agreement with the experimentally obtained value (92.49%). After 10 cycles, the MB removal rate remained above 80%, showcasing the potential for GDH reuse and cost-effective wastewater treatment.

Background: Iron is an essential element for cellular functions, such as energy metabolism. Trichomonas vaginalis, a human urogenital tract pathogen, is capable of surviving in the environment without sufficient iron supplementation. Pseudocysts (cyst-like structures) are an environmentally tolerated stage of this parasite while encountering undesired conditions, including iron deficiency. We previously demonstrated that iron deficiency induces more active glycolysis but a drastic downregulation of hydrogenosomal energy metabolic enzymes. Therefore, the metabolic direction of the end product of glycolysis is still controversial., Methods: In the present work, we conducted an LC‒MS-based metabolomics analysis to obtain accurate insights into the enzymatic events of T. vaginalis under iron-depleted (ID) conditions., Results: First, we showed the possible digestion of glycogen, cellulose polymerization, and accumulation of raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs). Second, a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA), capric acid, was elevated, whereas most detected C18 fatty acids were reduced significantly. Third, amino acids were mostly reduced, especially alanine, glutamate, and serine. Thirty-three dipeptides showed significant accumulation in ID cells, which was probably associated with the decrease in amino acids. Our results indicated that glycogen was metabolized as the carbon source, and the structural component cellulose was synthesized at same time. The decrease in C18 fatty acids implied possible incorporation in the membranous compartment for pseudocyst formation. The decrease in amino acids accompanied by an increase in dipeptides implied incomplete proteolysis. These enzymatic reactions (alanine dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and threonine dehydratase) were likely involved in ammonia release., Conclusion: These findings highlighted the possible glycogen utilization, cellulose biosynthesis, and fatty acid incorporation in pseudocyst formation as well as NO precursor ammonia production induced by iron-depleted stress., (© 2023. Purpose: Current skin imaging modalities, including optical, electron, and confocal microscopy, mostly require tissue fixations that could damage proteins and biological molecules. Live tissue or cell imaging such as ultrasonography and optical coherent microscope may not adequately measure the dynamic spectroscopical changes. Raman spectroscopy has been adopted for skin imaging in vivo, mostly for skin cancer imaging. However, whether the epidermal and dermal thickening in skin could be measured and distinguished by conventional Ramen spectroscopy or the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), a rapid and label-free method for noninvasive measurement remains unknown., Methods: Human skin sections from patients of atopic dermatitis and keloid, which represent epidermal and dermal thickening, respectively, were measured by conventional Ramen spectroscopy. In mice, skin sections from imiquimod (IMQ)- and bleomycin (BLE)-treated mice, which reflect the epidermal and dermal thickening, respectively, were measured by SERS, that incorporates gold nanoparticles to generate surface plasma and enhance Raman signals., Results: Conventional Ramen spectroscopy failed to consistently show the Raman shift in human samples among the different groups. SERS successfully revealed a prominent peak around 1300 cm -1 in the IMQ-treated skin; and two significant peaks around 1100 and 1300 cm -1 in BLE-treated group. Further quantitative analysis showed 1100 cm -1 peak was significantly accentuated in the BLE-treated skin than that in control skin. SERS identified in vitro a similar 1100 cm -1 peak in solutions of collagen, the major dermal biological molecules., Conclusion: SERS distinguishes the epidermal or dermal thickening in mouse skin with rapid and label-free measures. Background: Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis is a rare condition with unclear pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the clinical features, diagnostic modalities, treatments, and outcomes of idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis patients in Taiwan., Methods: Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis patients diagnosed by the typical characteristic of tree-like mesenteric venous calcifications on plain abdominal radiography or computed tomography between January 1992 and July 2021 were retrospectively analyzed., Results: Totally, 36 idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis patients were enrolled (50% females; mean age, 61.6 years). Among the included patients, 26 (72.2%) and 10 (27.7%) were symptomatic and asymptomatic, respectively. Abdominal pain (61.1%) accounted for the majority of all symptoms, followed by fever, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Our results showed that 83.3% of patients had at least 1 risk factor, whereas 16.6% of patients had none. Moreover, among the included patients, 36.1%, 44.4%, 50.0%, 38.8%, and 8.3% had cardiovascular disease, chronic renal disease, cancer, chronic liver disease, and diabetes mellitus, respectively. Our findings showed 94.4% of patients were diagnosed via abdominal computed tomography and plain abdominal radiography, whereas 5.6% of patients were diagnosed via plain abdominal radiography. The ascending colon was the most commonly involved site (100%). Our findings showed that 91.6% of patients experienced good recovery after conservative treatment, except for the 3 who died of sepsis and respiratory failure. By contrast, 8.3% of idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis patients underwent colectomy. The average follow-up duration was 62.5 months., Conclusions: Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis remains a rare disease in Taiwan. Plain abdominal radiography and computed tomography can be utilized for establishing a definite diagnosis. Conservative treatment is usually adequate for most patients, with surgical treatment only indicated for severe cases.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) biometric provides an authentication to identify an individual on the basis of specific cardiac potential measured from a living body. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) outperform traditional ECG biometrics because convolutions can produce discernible features from ECG through machine learning. Phase space reconstruction (PSR), using a time delay technique, is one of the transformations from ECG to a feature map, without the need of exact R-peak alignment. However, the effects of time delay and grid partition on identification performance have not been investigated. In this study, we developed a PSR-based CNN for ECG biometric authentication and examined the aforementioned effects. Based on a population of 115 subjects selected from the PTB Diagnostic ECG Database, a higher identification accuracy was achieved when the time delay was set from 20 to 28 ms, since it produced a well phase-space expansion of P, QRS, and T waves. A higher accuracy was also achieved when a high-density grid partition was used, since it produced a fine-detail phase-space trajectory. The use of a scaled-down network for PSR over a low-density grid with 32 × 32 partitions achieved a comparable accuracy with using a large-scale network for PSR over 256 × 256 partitions, but it had the benefit of reductions in network size and training time by 10 and 5 folds, respectively.

L-lactate is a key metabolite indicative of physiological states, glycolysis pathways, and various diseases such as sepsis, heart attack, lactate acidosis, and cancer. Detection of lactate has been relying on a few enzymes that need additional oxidants. In this work, DNA aptamers for L-lactate were obtained using a library-immobilization selection method and the highest affinity aptamer reached a K d of 0.43 mM as determined using isothermal titration calorimetry. The aptamers showed up to 50-fold selectivity for L-lactate over D-lactate and had little responses to other closely related analogs such as pyruvate or 3-hydroxybutyrate. A fluorescent biosensor based on the strand displacement method showed a limit of detection of 0.55 mM L-lactate, and the sensor worked in 90 % serum. Simultaneous detection of L-lactate and D-glucose in the same solution was achieved. To investigate the impact of an electronic medical record management system (EMRMS) on disease activity and the frequency of outpatient visits among patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). We identified 652 patients with AS who were followed up for at least 1 year before and after the first Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS) assessment and compared the number of outpatient visits and average visit time within 1 year before and after the initial ASDAS assessment. Finally, we analyzed 201 patients with AS who had complete data and received ≥ 3 continuous ASDAS assessments at an interval of 3 months, and we compared the results of the second and third ASDAS assessments with those of the first. The number of annual outpatient visits increased after ASDAS assessment (4.0 (4.0, 7.0) vs. 4.0 (4.0, 8.0), p < 0.001), particularly among those with a high initial disease activity. The average visit time was reduced within 1 year after ASDAS assessment (6.4 (8.5, 11.2) vs. 6.3 (8.3, 10.8) min, p = 0.073), especially among patients whose with an inactive disease activity was < 1.3 (ASDAS C-reactive protein (CRP) 6.7 (8.8, 11.1) vs. 6.1 (8.0, 10.3) min, p = 0.033; ASDAS erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) 6.4 (8.7, 11.1) vs. 6.1 (8.1, 10.0) min, p = 0.027). Among patients who received at least three ASDAS assessments, the third ASDAS-CRP tended to be lower than the first (1.5 (0.9, 2.1) vs. 1.4 (0.8, 1.9), p = 0.058). The use of an EMRMS increased the frequency of ambulatory visits among AS patients with high and very high disease activity and reduced the visit time among those with an inactive disease. Scalable production of electrocatalysts capable of performing high-current water splitting is crucial to support green energy utilization. We adopted acidic redox-assisted deposition (ARD) to realize the continuous roll-to-roll fabrication of a strongly adherent cobalt manganese oxyhydroxide (CMOH) film on Ni foam under ambient conditions in water. The as-fabricated products show uniform CMOH coverage and oxygen evolution activities with dimensions as large as 5 m length by 0.25 m width. Also, we converted CMOH into a metallic form (denoted as CM) with the preserved high adhesion to serve as a high-current hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst. Our results reveal that the insufficient adhesion of powder forms electrocatalysts (i.e., Pt and RuO 2 as benchmarks), even with the binder, at high-current electrolysis (>1000 mA) can be solved using the fabricated CM||CMOH cell. With an active area of 1 cm × 1 cm assembly in anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers, we observed the remarkable record of alkaline electrolysis stably at 5000 mA. This result established a new benchmark record on the high-current water splitting research.

Computer-aided prediction of aptamer sequences has been focused on primary sequence alignment and motif comparison. We observed that many aptamers have a conserved hairpin, yet the sequence of the hairpin can be highly variable. Taking such secondary structure information into consideration, a new algorithm combining conserved primary sequences and secondary structures is developed, which combines three scores based on sequence abundance, stability, and structure, respectively. This algorithm was used in the prediction of aptamers from the caffeine and theophylline selections. In the late rounds of the selections, when the libraries were converged, the predicted sequences matched well with the most abundant sequences. When the libraries were far from convergence and the sequences were deemed challenging for traditional analysis methods, this algorithm still predicted aptamer sequences that were experimentally verified by isothermal titration calorimetry. This algorithm paves a new way to look for patterns in aptamer selection libraries and mimics the sequence evolution process. It will help shorten the aptamer selection time and promote the biosensor and chemical biology applications of aptamers.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are one of the most commonly used reagents in colloidal science and biosensor technology. In this work, we first compared AuNPs prepared using four different reducing agents including citrate, glucose, ascorbate, and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES). At the same absorbance at the surface plasmon peak of 520-530 nm, citrate-AuNPs and glucose-AuNPs adsorbed more DNA and achieved higher affinity to the adsorbed DNA. In addition, citrate-AuNPs had better sensitivity than glucose-AuNPs for label-free DNA detection. Then, using citrate-AuNPs, the effect of aging was studied by incubation of the AuNPs at 22 °C (room temperature) and at 4 °C for up to 6 months. During aging, the colloidal stability and DNA adsorption efficiency gradually decreased. In addition, the DNA sensing sensitivity using a label-free method also dropped around 4-fold after 6 months. Heating at boiling temperature of the aged citrate-AuNPs could not rejuvenate the sensing performance. This study shows that while citrate-AuNPs are initially better than the other three AuNPs in their colloid properties and sensing properties, this edge in performance might gradually decrease due to constantly changing surface properties caused from the aging effect.

We aim to investigate the alteration in disease activity of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) individuals before, during, and after the COVID-19 wave in Taiwan by using electronic medical-record management system (EMRMS). We identified 126 AS individuals from the single center, and gathered data of the three disease activities (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index [BASDAI], Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score with erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ASDAS-ESR], and Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score with C-Reactive Protein [ASDAS-CRP]) by using EMRMS before (7 February to 1 May, 2021), during (2 May to 24 July, 2021), and after the COVID-19 wave (25 July to 16 October, 2021). We compared the disease activity measures of the three phases through a paired t test. Among the 126 individuals, CRP was significantly higher during the COVID-19 wave (0.2 (0.1, 0.5) mg/dl, p = 0.001) than before the wave (0.2 (0.1, 0.4) mg/dl), ESR (8.0 (4.0, 15.0) mm/h, p = 0.003) and ASDAS-ESR (1.4 (1.0, 1.9), p = 0.032) were significantly higher after the wave than during the wave (6.0 (3.0, 12.0) mm/h and 1.2 (0.9, 1.8) mm/h) e. ESR, CRP, ASDAS-ESR and ASDAS-CRP were all significant higher after COVID-19 wave than before. Shift work (SW) is the main working schedule worldwide, and it may cause sleep disorders, breast cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Low back pain (LBP) is a common problem in the workplace; however, the association between LBP and SW remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine the association between SW and LBP. This study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases using a set of associated keywords were queried. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) adult employees hired by a company or organization; (2) SW exposure; and (3) the outcome of LBP according to examination or assessment. A total of 40 studies were included that met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. SW was significantly associated with LBP (odds ratio [OR]: 1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.18−1.47, p < 0.00001). Furthermore, it was observed that LBP was significantly associated with night shift (NS) (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.24−1.82, p < 0.0001) but not with rotating shift (RS) (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.76−1.22, p = 0.49). Moreover, LBP was significantly associated with SW in health care workers (HCWs) (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.20−1.63, p < 0.0001) but not in non-HCWs (OR: 1.19, 95% CI: 0.94−1.50, p = 0.14). SW was significantly associated with LBP. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis showed that NS, but not RS, was associated with LBP. Compared with SW in non-HCWs, SW in HCWs was significantly associated with LBP.
