1. Dimension formulas for period spaces via motives and species

Abstract

We apply the structure theory of finite dimensional algebras in order to deduce dimension formulas for spaces of period numbers, i.e., complex numbers defined by integrals of algebraic nature. We get a complete and conceptually clear answer in the case of $1$-periods, generalising classical results like Baker's theorem on the logarithms of algebraic numbers and partial results in Huber--W{\"u}stholz \cite{huber-wuestholz}. The application to the case of Mixed Tate Motives (i.e., Multiple Zeta Values) recovers the dimension estimates of Deligne--Goncharov \cite{deligne-goncharov}., Comment: 46 pages. We describe singular homology of a manifold $X$ via simplices $\sigma:\Delta_d\to X$ that satisfy Stokes' formula with respect to all differential forms. 4. Exponential periods and o-minimality II

Abstract

This paper is a sequel to "Exponential periods and o-minimality I" that the authors wrote together with Philipp Habegger. We complete the comparison between different definitions of exponential periods, and show that they all lead to the same notion. In the first paper, we show that naive exponential periods are absolutely convergent exponential periods. We also show that naive exponential periods are up to signs volumes of definable sets in the o-minimal structure generated by $\mathbb{Q}$, the real exponential function and ${\sin}|_{[0,1]}$. In this paper, we compare these definitions with cohomological exponential periods and periods of exponential Nori motives. In particular, naive exponential periods are the same as periods of exponential Nori motives, which justifies that the definition of naive exponential periods singles out the correct set of complex numbers to be called exponential periods., Comment: The paper was merged with part I. Abstract

Let $\alpha \in \mathbb{C}$ be an exponential period. We show that the real and imaginary part of $\alpha$ are up to signs volumes of sets definable in the o-minimal structure generated by $\mathbb{Q}$, the real exponential function and ${\sin}|_{[0,1]}$. This is a weaker analogue of the precise characterisation of ordinary periods as numbers whose real and imaginary part are up to signs volumes of $\mathbb{Q}$-semi-algebraic sets. Furthermore, we define a notion of naive exponential periods and compare it to the existing notions using cohomological methods. This points to a relation between the theory of periods and o-minimal structures., Comment: 64 pages. We study four fundamental questions about $1$-periods and give complete answers. 1) We give a necessary and sufficient for a period integral to be transcendental. 2) We give a qualitative description of all $\overline{\mathbf{Q}}$-linear relations between $1$-periods, establishing Kontsevich's period conjecture in this case. 3) Periods may vanish and we determine all cases when this happens. 4) For a fixed $1$-motive, we derive a general formula for the dimension of its space of periods in the spirit of Baker's theorem., Comment: This is the final draft and very close to the published version of the monograph, but not identical. Abstract

This paper continues our study of the sheaf associated to K\"ahler differentials in the cdh-topology and its cousins, in positive characteristic, without assuming resolution of singularities. The picture for the sheaves themselves is now fairly complete. We give a calculation $\mathcal{O}_{cdh}(X) \cong \mathcal{O}(X^{sn})$ in terms of the seminormalisation. We observe that the category of representable cdh-sheaves is equivalent to the category of seminormal varieties. We conclude by proposing some possible connections to Berkovich spaces, and $F$-singularities in the last section. 36. Norway and Sweden

Abstract

Seit den Anfängen des Naturschutzes, haben die benachbarten skandinavischen Länder, Norwegen und Schweden, stets versucht, die Anliegen der Naturschutzpolitik mit den Interessen der Nutzergruppen in Einklang zu bringen. Ursprünglich war die Naturschutzpolitik in beiden Ländern zentralisiert und lag völlig im Aufgabenbereich des Staates. Die letzten Jahre haben allerdings eine signifikante Wende, hin zu dezentralisierten Managementstrategien, in beiden Ländern gebracht, die sich allerdings auf unterschiedliche Weise manifestiert haben. Während Schweden begonnen hat, partnerschaftliche Managementmodelle zu etablieren, hat sich die Naturschutzpolitik Norwegens durch eine grundlegende Reform im Jahr 2009 nachhaltig verändert. Diese Arbeit stellt daher einen Vergleich zwischen den beiden Ländern an und zielt darauf ab herauszufinden, wie erfolgreich sie die neuen Strategien umgesetzt haben. Dabei wird ein spezieller Fokus auf folgende neu-begründete Nationalparks gelegt: Kosterhavets Nationalpark und Fulufjället Nationalpark in Schweden, sowie Ytre Hvaler Nationalpark und die norwegische Erweiterung des Fulufjället Nationalparks in Norwegen. Des Weiteren wird auch der Hardangervidda Nationalpark aufgrund seiner flächenmäßig großen Ausdehnung näher beleuchtet. Die Basis für nachfolgende lokale Recherchen in den genannten Nationalparks, bildet eine tiefgreifende Analyse bereits bestehender literarischer Erkenntnisse. Die Tatsache, dass die Nationalparks, die im Rahmen dieser Arbeit untersucht werden, im Grenzgebiet zwischen Norwegen und Schweden liegen, rechtfertigt darüber hinaus, das Augenmerk auf einen weiteren Forschungsaspekt zu legen, und zwar wie weit grenzüberschreitende Management-Kooperationen zwischen Norwegen und Schweden bestehen. Die Ergebnisse haben gezeigt, dass trotz bemerkenswerter Verbesserungen im Laufe der letzten Jahre, beide Länder bislang keine außergewöhnlich großen Erfolge in der Beilegung des ‚Schützen-Nützen Konfliktes‘ erzielen konnten. Darüber hinaus ist es bisher weder im Koster Archipel Lago, noch in den Gebieten der Fulufjället Parks, gelungen, die Managementsysteme der Parke zu vereinheitlichen und es kann bisher kaum von ‚grenzüberschreitender Zusammenarbeit‘ gesprochen werden., Since the beginnings of nature protection, the Scandinavian neighboring countries, Norway and Sweden, have continuously been trying to harmonize the protection of environmental concerns, with the interests and rights of user groups. While in both countries nature protection policy has traditionally been centralized, in recent years, one could observe a significant shift towards decentralized management strategies. However, these new bottom-up approaches manifested differently in Norway and Sweden. While Sweden has started to establish partnership models in newly founded national parks, Norway’s policy underwent substantial changes in 2009, due to a major reform, the Nature Diversity Act. Consequently, this thesis investigates and compares how successful the neighboring countries have been in implementing the new strategies. Thereby, a special focus is being put on the four newly established national parks, Kosterhavets Marina National Park and Fulufjället National Park in Sweden as well as Ytre Hvaler National Park and the Norwegian Expansion of Fulufjället National Park in Norway. Furthermore, also Hardangervidda National Park is being investigated, as it is Norway’s largest National Park in size. The investigation is not only based on an extensive literature analysis, but moreover, on an empirical local research in all national parks listed. Due to the fact that the national parks under analysis are situated in close borderline proximity to one another, a further research focus is being put on investigating, in how far there are transboundary management strategies to be found between Norway and Sweden. The results have shown that – despite the fact that recent years have exhibited remarkable improvements – both countries have so far not been extraordinarily successful in combining protection and use. Furthermore, neither the adjacent Kosterhavets Marine National Parks, nor National Parks in the Fulufjället borderline area, might be labeled as ‘transboundary national parks’ yet.
