Abstract

Forests supply multiple ecosystem services and host a large proportion of the Earth's terrestrial biodiversity. In particular, they provide habitats for many taxonomic groups which can be threatened by forest unsustainable management practices. Type and intensity of forest management are widely recognized as the main drivers of structure and functions in forests ecosystems. However, to better understand the impacts and the benefits deriving from forest management, there is a big need to standardize procedures of field data collection and data analysis.Here, we provide a georeferenced dataset of vertical and horizontal structure of forest types belonging to 4 habitat types, sensu Council Directive 92/43/EEC. The dataset includes structural indicators commonly linked to old-growth forests in Europe, in particular the amount of standing and lying deadwood. We collected data on 32 plots (24 of 225 m2, and 8 of 100 m2, according to different forests type) during spring and summer of 2022, in Val d'Agri (Basilicata, Southern Italy). The dataset we provide follows the common national standard for field data collection in forest habitat types, published by ISPRA in 2016 with the aim to promote a greater homogeneity in assessment of habitat conservation status at Country and biogeographical level, as requested by the Habitats Directive.

Abstract

Several regulatory and management tools are commonly used to prevent negative effects of human trampling on sand dune habitats, but few studies have attempted to evaluate the effects of boardwalks on dune vegetation. We aimed to evaluate changes of species richness and cover, floristic composition and ecological functional guilds among different dune habitats 2 years after the boardwalks had been established, highlighting those habitats mainly affected by these changes. In a Special Protection Area of Molise region (Italy), we sampled 53 square plots before the installation of five wooden boardwalks (control plots) and 57 plots after the boardwalks had been set up (testing plot), across the whole dune system ranging from the upper beach to the pine forest. We compared species richness through rarefaction curves, considering two plant functional groups: focal species (characteristic and diagnostic) and ruderal/exotic species. We finally compared florist composition and cover changes between time intervals, dune habitats and functional groups. In all habitats the total plant richness of testing plots was higher than in the control plots. In beach and mobile dunes habitat focal species drive the increase in both species’ richness and cover. Dune grasslands proved to be the most affected by the presence of ruderal and exotic species, while the more stable fixed dunes habitat was less affected by species changes. Only 2 years after the boardwalks having been set up, we have found a rapid recovery since human trampling was limited. The use of boardwalks could be an effective tool for reducing negative impact of bathing tourism on coastal dunes and requires little and inexpensive maintenance.

Abstract

Invasive alien plants are a major threat to biodiversity and they contribute to the unfavourable conservation status of habitats of interest to the European Community. In order to favour implementation of European Union Regulation no. 1143/2014 on invasive alien species, the Italian Society of Vegetation Science carried out a large survey led by a task force of 49 contributors with expertise in vegetation across all the Italian administrative regions. The survey summed up the knowledge on impact mechanisms of invasive alien plants in Italy and their outcomes on plant communities and the EU habitats of Community Interest, in accordance with Directive no. 92/43/EEC. The survey covered 241 alien plant species reported as having deleterious ecological impacts. The data collected illustrate the current state of the art, highlight the main gaps in knowledge, and suggest topics to be further investigated. In particular, the survey underlined competition as being the main mechanism of ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats. Of the 241 species, only Ailanthus altissima was found to exert an ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats in all Italian regions; while a further 20 species impact up to ten out of the 20 Italian administrative regions. Our data indicate that 84 out of 132 Natura 2000 Habitats (64%) are subjected to some degree of impact by invasive alien plants. Freshwater habitats and natural and semi-natural grassland formations were impacted by the highest number of alien species, followed by coastal sand dunes and inland dunes, and forests. Although not exhaustive, this research is the first example of nationwide evaluation of the ecological impacts of invasive alien plants on plant communities and Natura 2000 Habitats.

Abstract

Coastal dunes are among habitats with the worst conservation status on a global, European and national scale. Monitoring and reporting are of strategic importance to determine the effectiveness of the implementation of Habitats Directive and to preserve the unique biodiversity heritage of the Italian dunes. In this study we show main results of the 4th National Report with specific reference to the macro-habitat “Coastal Sand Dunes and Inland Dunes”, highlighting its updated current conservation status at the national and Biogeographical level. A comprehensive Working Group of territorial experts collected, updated, validated and integrated the data available for 11 Annex I Habitats, distributed in the Alpine, Continental and Mediterranean Biogeographical Regions. The conservation status was evaluated through the following criteria: geographic range, surface area, structure, functions, pressures, threats, conservation measures and prospects. Results highlighted the dramatically bad conservation status of Italian dune Habitats: the overall assessment reported 88% of habitats in bad conservation status and the remaining 12% is in inadequate conditions. Results showed a generalised threat and a worrying conservation status both on herbaceous and wooded communities, in particular in some relevant habitats, such as the shifting dunes. Main pressures and threats were linked to residential, commercial and industrial activities, as well as alien species. Although some of the changes in distribution and trends are probably deriving from more accurate and updated data, the alarming conservation status of Italian sand dunes requires a better knowledge of pressures and threats for further management actions and monitoring plans, inside and outside protected areas.

Abstract

Multi-year temporal studies are invaluable tools for monitoring changes in biodiversity through time. However, their applications in coastal ecosystems are still scarce. We investigated temporal trends in coastal dunes analyzing a set of 858 randomly-sampled georeferenced relevés performed between 2002 and 2015 along Central Italy’s sandy coastlines. Specifically, we explored changes in species richness and cover of targeted sandy habitats, we investigated trends in the cover of selected psammophilous native species and we assessed patterns of invasion by means of regression techniques. We observed a significant decrease in species richness and cover of the dune grasslands habitat. The species-level analysis confirmed a negative trend for two characteristic species of dune grasslands, Cutandia maritima and Medicago littoralis, while revealing a similar decline for Crucianella maritima and for Ammophila arenaria subsp. australis, key species of mobile dunes. The most striking trends emerged analyzing patterns in the cover of an invasive alien species, Carpobrotus sp., which showed a concerning increase in shifting dunes. In conclusion, our analyses reveal concerning changes involving dune grasslands, and at the same time hint at “early warnings” of degradation processes traceable in shifting dunes.

Abstract

Plant communities of coastal dunes are highly biodiverse and greatly valued for the services they provide, yet they are also threatened by global change and are often neglected in conservation planning. To determine the long-term effectiveness of conservation actions on Mediterranean coastal dunes, here we focus on Italy's coastline and (i) assess how the vegetation cover of the major psammophilous habitats and species has changed since the 1960s, (ii) identify which ecological strategies have been most successful in the face of global change and (iii) evaluate the efficacy of the protected areas network for safeguarding plant communities of coastal dunes. We compiled 2583 geo-located vegetation relevés spanning over half a century and covering the entire length of Italy's sandy coastline. Using this data base, we developed statistical models to test whether the vegetation cover of both individual species and habitats has changed over time. We then tested whether species-level changes in vegetation cover through time could be explained by species' functional traits and ecological strategy. Finally, we assessed the efficacy of current conservation measures by exploring how vegetation cover responded following the expansion of the protected areas network. Our results indicate that, where protected, plant communities have generally increased in vegetation cover in recent years. The strongest increase in cover occurred in the wooded dune habitats, where late-successional, tall-growing and large-seeded species show the clearest signs of recovery. However, this has come in part at the expense of dune grasslands, which thrive under natural disturbance and have declined since the 1960s. The Natura 2000 network seems to have played a central role in this recovery process, as the cumulative coastal land area under protection has tripled since the network was first established. Synthesis and applications. Our results suggest that protected areas can play an important role in safeguarding coastal dune plant communities against land-use transformations. In this context, functional traits can be a powerful tool in guiding conservation planning, helping to identify groups of species most at risk of population declines. Nonetheless, future conservation interventions need to be mindful to ensure that the natural disturbance regime of dune ecosystems is not disrupted.

Abstract

Question: Coastal environments have often been described as azonal. While this characteristic is clear for the foredune system, it seems less evident for more inland fixed dunes, which host habitats of major conservation concern, whose features seem to be more related to local climatic conditions. We hypothesized that, unlike other coastal habitats, dune perennial grasslands differ floristically and structurally across their European range and that patterns of variation are linked to the corresponding climate. Location: European coasts (Atlantic Ocean, Baltic, Mediterranean, Black Sea). Methods: We used a large data set of phytosociological relevés, representative of coastal grasslands throughout their European range. The role of climatic variables (temperature, precipitation and continentality) in determining the variability in species composition and vegetation structure (by means of life forms) was investigated through CCA, DCA and GLM. The degree of concentration of species occurrences within groups was calculated through the Phi coefficient. Results: Through multivariate analyses we identified seven major types of coastal grassland, corresponding to different geographic areas. The groups significantly differed in their climatic envelope, as well as in their species composition and community structure. Conclusion: Our results confirm the hypothesis that coastal dune perennial grasslands are subjected to local climate, which exerts significant effects on both floristic composition and community structure. As a consequence, coastal grasslands are particularly prone to the effect of possible climate change, which may alter species composition and distribution, and lead to shifts in the distribution of native plant communities.

10. Habitat conservation in Italy: the state of the art in the light of the first European Red List of Terrestrial and Freshwater Habitats

Abstract

The importance of taking into account ecosystems, plant communities and habitats for the development of biodiversity conservation strategies is increasingly acknowledged. Recently, the first ever European Red List of Habitats was produced, which provided an evaluation of the extinction risk of EUNIS-based natural and semi-natural habitats in Europe. As assessment unit, it used the habitat intended as a plant community, thus representing a landmark for the role of vegetation science in nature conservation. In the present paper, the results of the European Red List of Habitats are analyzed at the national scale with specific reference to the terrestrial and freshwater habitat types occurring in Italy. More than three-quarters of the assessed European habitat types were recognized for the Italian territory. The distribution of the threat categories reflects approximately the situation at the EU28 level. About 35% of the assessed habitat types are referred to a threat category; no critically endangered habitat is present in Italy. The most frequently used criteria are those related to a reduction in quantity. Some critical issues arising from the analyses are discussed. In particular, the presence of knowledge gaps is pointed out, with remarkable reference to the poor availability of spatial and quantitative data, severely affecting the application of the criteria adopted for the assessment. Descriptions of habitat types from Italy are reported, some of which are representative, emblematic or even exclusive to the Italian territory. The outcomes of the analysis represent the starting point for the future development of a national-scale Red List of Habitats. Results also emphasized how habitat types with a too broad definition pose a limit to a proper evaluation of the regional biogeographic variability, often very high in Italy, with local floristic and phytocoenotic peculiarities which do not find room in the adopted European typology. This is the reason why the development of national subtypes stands as a necessary step for the development of a realistic and effective assessment at the national scale.

Abstract

Detailed monitoring studies on permanent sites are a promising tool for an accurate evaluation of short, medium or long term vegetation dynamics. This work aims to evaluate short-term changes in coastal dune herbaceous plant species and EU Habitats through a multi-temporal analysis using permanent vegetation transects. In particular, (I) we analyze changes in species richness of coastal habitats; (II) we identify changes in plant cover of selected focal plants; and (III) we relate the changes to selected climatic variables and erosion/accretion processes. We selected one of the Italian's peninsula best preserved coastal dune areas (ca. 50 km along the Adriatic sea) with a relatively homogeneous coastal zonation and low anthropic pressure but with different erosion/accretion processes. We explored changes in richness over time using generalized linear models (GLMs). We identified different ecological guilds: focal, ruderal and alien plant species and investigated temporal trends in these guilds' species richness. We also applied GLMs to determine how plant cover of the most important focal species have changed over time. Overall, in this study we observed that the influence of climatic variables was relatively small. However, we found remarkable different trends in response to erosion/accretion processes both at community and at species level. Thus, our results highlight the importance of coastal dynamics in preserving not only coastal vegetation zonation, but also species richness and focal species cover. Moreover, we identified the dune grasslands as the most sensitive habitat for detecting the influence of climatic variables throughout a short term monitoring survey. Information from this study provides useful insights for detecting changes in vegetation, for establishing habitat protection priorities and for improving conservation efforts for these fragile ecosystems.

Abstract

We introduce RanVegDunes (GIVD ID EU-IT-020), the first Italian database gathering standardized, randomly- sampled vegetation data in coastal dune environments. RanVegDunes currently consists of 979 original georeferenced relevés randomly collected over about 160 km of Holocenic dune systems of central Italy between 2002 and 2015. Plots were located in five Italian administrative regions (Lazio, Campania, Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia), where sandy vegetation was randomly recorded in standardized 4-m2plots across the whole coastal zonation, thus including upper beach, embryo dunes, shifting dunes, dune grasslands, wooded dunes and Mediterranean forests. Each plot was georeferenced with a high level of accuracy using a GPS unit. For each plot, a list of vascular plant species based on updated nomenclature was compiled, and an estimate of abundance was calculated for each species using a percentage cover scale ranging from 1 to 10 (1 = 1-10%; 2 = 10-20%; ...; 10 = 90-100%). Two habitat classification systems were used for the description of collected plots: specifically, each vegetation plot was classified according to the Interpretation Manual of the 92/43/EEC Habitats Directive and also to the hierarchical structure of the EUNIS habitat classification. Currently, RanVegDunes includes vegetation plots belonging to nine EU Habitats (1210, 2110, 2120, 2210, 2230, 2250, 2260, 2270, 9340), which in turn correspond to five EUNIS Habitats (B1.1, B1.3, B1.4, B1.6, B1.7). RanVegDunes is a powerful tool for a variety of studies addressing topics such as temporal trends in coastal vegetation, ecological modeling, re-visitation studies, spatio-temporal patterns of invasion and will therefore greatly benefit from further collection of data.

Abstract

Coastal sandy ecosystems are increasingly being threatened by human pressure, causing loss of biodiversity and habitat degradation. Using phytosociological relevés we conducted a re-visitation study in order to analyse changes in floristic composition during the last twenty years along the central Adriatic coast. We observed a significant increase in cover of fore dune and thermophilic species. Even though human activities are major driving forces of change in coastal dune vegetation, the species' cover increase may also be due to a moderate increment in average yearly temperature over the last two decades., Coastal sandy ecosystems are increasingly being threatened by human pressure, causing loss of biodiversity, habitat degradation and landscape modifications. However, there are still very few detailed studies focussing on compositional changes in coastal dune plant communities over time. In this work, we investigated how coastal dune European Union (EU) habitats (from pioneer annual beach communities to Mediterranean scrubs on the landward fixed dunes) have changed during the last 20 years. Using phytosociological relevés conducted in 1989–90 and in 2010–12, we investigated changes in floristic composition over time. We then compared plant cover and the proportion of ruderal, alien and habitat diagnostic species (‘focal species’) in the two periods. Finally, we used Ellenberg indicator values to define the ‘preferences’ of the plant species for temperature and moisture. We found that only fore dune habitats showed significant differences in species cover between the two time periods, with higher plant cover in the more recent relevés and a significant increase in thermophilic species. Although previous studies have demonstrated consistent habitat loss in this area, we observed that all coastal dune plant communities remain well represented, after a 20-year period. However, fore dunes have been experiencing significant compositional changes. Although we cannot confirm whether the observed changes are strictly related to climatic changes, to human pressure or to both, we hypothesize that a moderate increment in average yearly temperature may have promoted the increase in plant cover and the spread of thermophilic species. Thus, even though human activities are major driving forces of change in coastal dune vegetation, at the community scale climatic factors may also play important roles. Our study draws on re-visitation studies which appear to constitute a powerful tool for the assessment of the conservation status of EU habitats.

Abstract

Negli ultimi tempi il tema della Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), soprattutto nella sua evoluzione self-learning, inizia ad interessare sempre più la riflessione giuridica, non soltanto al fine di descrivere i diversi fenomeni, pur analoghi ma non sempre riconducibili ad una semplificante unità, quanto allo scopo di individuare i possibili rimedi esperibili, in ciascun sistema giuridico, nel caso di eventi dannosi arrecati alla controparte contrattuale o a terzi. Quindi, più che di un’unica Intelligenza Artificiale, sembra opportuno parlare di “intelligenze artificiali” al plurale, non escludendo che, anche sotto il profilo delle tutele, queste possano differenziarsi in ordine ai diversi modelli di intelligenza artificiale ed ai diversi tipi di tool, di machine learning o di agenti software (più o meno) autonomi che possono venire in considerazione nei differenti settori dei rapporti civili. In presenza di un significativo mutamento di opinione del Parlamento europeo, anche le proposte degli esperti del MiSE prospettano la necessità di un attento "riesame" delle discipline nazionali in tema di responsabilità. Superate le teorie, elaborate soprattutto dalla dottrina tedesca, che intendono riconoscere agli agenti software autonomi una soggettività giuridica piena o parziale, un primo dato essenziale consiste nel ribadire la centralità del principio di responsabilità solidale tra i molteplici soggetti che partecipano, a vario titolo, alla “catena di produzione” di una I.A. La normativa di origine europea in materia di sicurezza e di qualità dei prodotti si rivela però inadeguata a disciplinare la responsabilità di “cose” animate da intelligenza artificiale, sia per il carattere polisenso della nozione di difetto, sia per la dinamica degli oneri probatori (nonostante gli importanti risultati cui sono pervenute la Cassazione e la Corte di Giustizia U.E in tema di prova presuntiva del difetto e del nesso causale), sia, soprattutto, per l’incompatibilità delle I.A. con il c.d. rischio da sviluppo. Sicuramente più adeguata appare, sussistendone i presupposti applicativi, la Gefährdungshaftung e la disciplina sulla responsabilità per l’esercizio di attività pericolose (art. 2050 c.c.). Così il rapporto di imputazione della responsabilità tra l’agente software autonomo che abbia cagionato danni al terzo e il principal è specificamente qualificato dal rapporto di “custodia” di cui all’art. 2051 c.c. Ma v’è sempre la possibilità, da parte del danneggiato, di proporre il “concorso” tra gli artt. 2050 e 2051 c.c., che lascia al giudice la possibilità di qualificare la fattispecie con riferimento al singolo concreto rapporto. Riguardo alla responsabilità per i danni causati dalla circolazione di veicoli self-driving, la “rilettura” della disciplina vigente si rivela per più versi inadeguata, dovendo la responsabilità civile cedere il passo a un più efficace modello di sicurezza sociale. Anche nel settore della robotica medica e dei veicoli self-driving, l’incidenza dell’evoluzione tecnologica spinge al superamento dell’idea di “responsabilità” verso modelli di imputazione dei danni a titolo di absolute liability, “garantiti” dall’assicurazione obbligatoria, da fondi di garanzia e/o da piani di social security.

Abstract

Objectives We aimed to analyze the prevalence and impact of COPD in older patients hospitalized in internal medicine or geriatric wards, and to investigate adherence to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines, associated clinical factors, and outcomes. Design Data were obtained from REgistro POliterapie SIMI (REPOSI), a prospective multicenter observational registry that enrolls inpatients aged ≥65 years. Setting and Participants Older hospitalized patients enrolled from 2008 to 2016 with a diagnosis of COPD. Measures We evaluated adherence to the 2018 GOLD guidelines at admission and discharge, by examining the prescription of inhaled bronchodilators and corticosteroids in COPD patients. We also evaluated the occurrence of outcomes and its association with COPD and guideline adherence. Results At hospital admission, COPD was diagnosed in 1302 (21.5%) of 6046 registered patients. COPD patients were older, with more impaired clinical and functional status and multiple comorbidities. Overall, 34.3% of COPD patients at admission and 35.6% at discharge were adherent to the GOLD guidelines. Polypharmacy (≥5 drugs) at admission [odds ratio (OR): 3.28, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.24-4.81], a history of acute COPD exacerbation (OR: 2.65, 95% CI: 1.44-4.88) at admission, smoking habit (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.08-1.94), and polypharmacy at discharge (OR: 6.76, 95% CI: 4.15-11.0) were associated with adherence to guidelines. COPD was independently associated with the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory death and rehospitalization occurrence compared to patients without COPD during follow-up. Adherence to guidelines was inversely associated with the occurrence of death from all causes (OR: 0.12, 95% CI: 0.02-0.90). Conclusions/Implications COPD was common in older patients acutely hospitalized, showing an impaired functional and clinical status. Prescriptions for older COPD patients were often not adherent to GOLD guidelines. Poor adherence to guidelines was associated with a worse clinical status. There is a need to improve adherence to guidelines in treating COPD patients, with the ultimate goal of reducing clinical events.

Abstract

Background: We aimed to assess the usefulness of the falx cerebri and the corpus callosum measurements as imaging markers of the evaluation of patients with bilateral subdural hematomas., Methods: The anterior-posterior and craniocaudal distances between the falx cerebri (FC) and the corpus callosum (CC) were retrospectively measured in 88 head CT scans from 2018 to 2022 from patients with bilateral subdural hematomas and associated with quantitative data and clinical outcomes. Statistical analysis was performed using multivariate regression and receiver operating characteristic curves., Results: Of the 88 patients included, 77.3% were male and the median age of 76.0 years (interquartile range 14.0). The mean craniocaudal and anterior-posterior FC-CC distances were 27.6 ± 6.2 mm and 25.1 ± 6.9 mm, respectively, and showed a positive correlation with hematoma thickness and volume. Both anterior-posterior and craniocaudal FC-CC distances exhibited moderate to good inter-rater reliability. After adjusting for confounders, the craniocaudal FC-CC distance was associated with an increased risk of altered consciousness at admission (OR=1.013; 95% CI 1.001-1.024; p = 0.031), downward displacement of the third ventricle (OR=1.019; 95% CI 1.001-1.038; p = 0.035), and a reduced time to surgery (β = 0.057; 95% CI 0.007-0.107; p = 0.027)., Conclusion: This study emphasizes that increased FC-CC distances in patients with bilateral subdural hematomas may aid clinical decision-making and are associated with larger hematoma volumes, evidence of descending transtentorial herniation on imaging, and a heightened risk of altered consciousness at admission., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors have no competing interests to declare that are relevant to the content of this article., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Forests supply multiple ecosystem services and host a large proportion of the Earth's terrestrial biodiversity. In particular, they provide habitats for many taxonomic groups which can be threatened by forest unsustainable management practices. Type and intensity of forest management are widely recognized as the main drivers of structure and functions in forests ecosystems. However, to better understand the impacts and the benefits deriving from forest management, there is a big need to standardize procedures of field data collection and data analysis. Here, we provide a georeferenced dataset of vertical and horizontal structure of forest types belonging to 4 habitat types, sensu Council Directive 92/43/EEC. The dataset includes structural indicators commonly linked to old-growth forests in Europe, in particular the amount of standing and lying deadwood. We collected data on 32 plots (24 of 225 m 2 , and 8 of 100 m 2 , according to different forests type) during spring and summer of 2022, in Val d'Agri (Basilicata, Southern Italy). 30. A Case of Cerebral Air Embolism After Dental Procedure.

Abstract

Air embolism is a rare and life-threatening event that occurs when air enters the cardiovascular system, usually secondary to iatrogenic vascular procedures. We present a 58-year-old woman who underwent a dental procedure (devitalization of a tooth) under local anesthesia, with a sudden onset of coma during manipulation and documentation of air in the vessels of the right frontal convexity sulci. After cerebral air embolism was confirmed, she received hyperbaric oxygen therapy, with resorption of the gas, but clinically she developed a super-refractory status epilepticus with a persistent coma. The slow clinical course required the exclusion of other etiologies of coma. The pathophysiology is not well known; however, it appears to be related to the injection of air by the high-speed dental drill through the soft tissue adjacent to the roots of the teeth, nearby the bloodstream. Abstract

Invasive alien plants are a major threat to biodiversity and they contribute to the unfavourable conservation status of habitats of interest to the European Community. In order to favour implementation of European Union Regulation no. 1143/2014 on invasive alien species, the Italian Society of Vegetation Science carried out a large survey led by a task force of 49 contributors with expertise in vegetation across all the Italian administrative regions. The survey summed up the knowledge on impact mechanisms of invasive alien plants in Italy and their outcomes on plant communities and the EU habitats of Community Interest, in accordance with Directive no. 92/43/EEC. The survey covered 241 alien plant species reported as having deleterious ecological impacts. The data collected illustrate the current state of the art, highlight the main gaps in knowledge, and suggest topics to be further investigated. In particular, the survey underlined competition as being the main mechanism of ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats. Of the 241 species, only Ailanthus altissima was found to exert an ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats in all Italian regions; while a further 20 species impact up to ten out of the 20 Italian administrative regions. Our data indicate that 84 out of 132 Natura 2000 Habitats (64%) are subjected to some degree of impact by invasive alien plants. Freshwater habitats and natural and semi-natural grassland formations were impacted by the highest number of alien species, followed by coastal sand dunes and inland dunes, and forests. 32. Changes in plant species composition of coastal dune habitats over a 20-year period.

Abstract

Coastal sandy ecosystems are increasingly being threatened by human pressure, causing loss of biodiversity, habitat degradation and landscape modifications. However, there are still very few detailed studies focussing on compositional changes in coastal dune plant communities over time. In this work, we investigated how coastal dune European Union (EU) habitats (from pioneer annual beach communities to Mediterranean scrubs on the landward fixed dunes) have changed during the last 20 years. Using phytosociological relevés conducted in 1989-90 and in 2010-12, we investigated changes in floristic composition over time. We then compared plant cover and the proportion of ruderal, alien and habitat diagnostic species ('focal species') in the two periods. Finally, we used Ellenberg indicator values to define the 'preferences' of the plant species for temperature and moisture. We found that only fore dune habitats showed significant differences in species cover between the two time periods, with higher plant cover in the more recent relevés and a significant increase in thermophilic species. Although previous studies have demonstrated consistent habitat loss in this area, we observed that all coastal dune plant communities remain well represented, after a 20-year period. However, fore dunes have been experiencing significant compositional changes. Although we cannot confirm whether the observed changes are strictly related to climatic changes, to human pressure or to both, we hypothesize that a moderate increment in average yearly temperature may have promoted the increase in plant cover and the spread of thermophilic species. Thus, even though human activities are major driving forces of change in coastal dune vegetation, at the community scale climatic factors may also play important roles. Our study draws on re-visitation studies which appear to constitute a powerful tool for the assessment of the conservation status of EU habitats., (Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Annals of Botany Company.)
