Abstract: The Late Viséan ammonoid genus Goniatites had a near-global distribution within the tropical seas but was rarely reported from Central Asia. New investigations of the Early Carboniferous sedimentary succession in the Greater Karatau of Kazakhstan revealed a species-poor new assemblage with Goniatites and assists in the biostratigraphic subdivision of the section. Abstract: International audience; Hotspots of tropical marine biodiversity are areas that harbour disproportionately large numbers of species compared to surrounding regions. The richness and location of these hotspots have changed throughout the Cenozoic. Here, we review the global dynamics of Cenozoic tropical marine biodiversity hotspots, including the four major hotspots of the Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA), western Tethys (present Mediterranean), Arabian Sea and Caribbean Sea. Our review supports the ‘Hopping Hotspots’ model, which proposes that the locations of peak biodiversity are related to Tethyan faunal elements and track broad-scale shallow-marine habitats and high coastal complexity created by the collision of tectonic plates. A null hypothesis is the ‘Whack-A-Mole’ model, which proposes that hotspots occur in habitats suitable for high diversity regardless of taxonomic identity or faunal elements. Earlier ‘Centre-of’ theories (e.g. centres of origin with diversity decreasing with distance from supposed areas of exceptionally high rates of speciation, for which easy connection to adjacent regions to the east and west is important) were based on the analysis of recent biotas with no palaeontological foundation, and may better explain diversity dynamics within a hotspot rather than those between hotspots. More recently, however, human disturbance is massively disrupting these natural patterns.

Abstract: Objectives: The scoring and analysis of dental nonmetric traits are predominantly accomplished by using the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS), a standard protocol based on strict definitions and three‐dimensional dental plaques. However, visual scoring, even when controlled by strict definitions of features, visual reference, and the experience of the observer, includes an unavoidable part of subjectivity. In this methodological contribution, we propose a new quantitative geometric morphometric approach to quickly and efficiently assess the variation of shoveling in modern human maxillary central incisors (UI1).\ud \ud Materials and methods: We analyzed 87 modern human UI1s by means of virtual imaging and the ASU‐UI1 dental plaque grades using geometric morphometrics by placing semilandmarks on the labial crown aspect. The modern human sample was composed of individuals from Europe, Africa, and Asia and included representatives of all seven grades defined by the ASUDAS method.\ud \ud Results: Our results highlighted some limitations in the use of the current UI1 ASUDAS plaque, indicating that it did not necessarily represent an objective gradient of expression of a nonmetric tooth feature. Rating of shoveling tended to be more prone to intra‐ and interobserver bias for the highest grades. In addition, our analyses suggest that the observers were strongly influenced by the depth of the lingual crown aspect when assessing the shoveling.\ud \ud Discussion: In this context, our results provide a reliable and reproducible framework reinforced by statistical results supporting the fact that open scale numerical measurements can complement the ASUDAS method.

Abstract: International audience; The Cheirolepidiaceous conifer Suturovagina intermedia Chow et Tsao is reported from the Lower Cretaceous of Wangqing, Jilin Province in northeastern China, and its leaf cuticles were studied in detail using scanning and transmission electron microscopies and EDS. The data obtained were compared with those of the previous study on the same species from the Lower Cretaceous of the type locality Nanjing, Jiangsu Province in eastern China. Despite the general similarity in gross morphology and leaf cuticular structure, there are a number of differences in leaf cuticular ultrastructure and element composition (EDS data) between specimens from the two localities. Among them, 14 differences are potential tax- onomical characters. Of them, 7 might be of importance at the species/genus level, and 7 are possible characters at the family level. There are also 23 differences, i.e., 7 cuticle ultrastructural characters of ordinary epidermal cell cuticles and 5 subsidiary cell cuticles, plus 11 EDS ratios of cuticles, believed to be of ecological signi␣cances. This paper presents the ␣rst case to make comparative palaeoenvironmental analyses based on leaf cuticle ultrastructure and element composition of the same taxon from different areas. It shows that Suturovagina intermedia was an inhabitant of a lower xerothermic environment in Wangqing, instead of being a higher xerothermic environment, such as in the type locality Nanjing. The conclusion obtained is well-supported by the evidence of the element composition (EDX data) of the matrix and the associated biotic composition of the fossil-bearing beds from the two localities. It is the ␣rst attempt to search for the environmental footprint in fossil plant cuticles based on their element composition.

Abstract: Vesicular carriers transport proteins and lipids from one organelle to another, recognizing specific identifiers for the donor and acceptor membranes. Two important identifiers are phosphoinositides and GTP-bound GTPases, which provide well-defined but mutable labels. Phosphatidylinositol and its phosphorylated derivatives are present on the cytosolic faces of most cellular membranes1,2. Reversible phosphorylation of its headgroup produces seven distinct phosphoinositides. In endocytic traffic, phosphatidylinositol-4,5-biphosphate marks the plasma membrane, and phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphateand phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate mark distinct endosomal compartments2,3. It is unknown what sequence of changes in lipid content confers on the vesicles their distinct identity at each intermediate step. Here we describe ‘coincidence-detecting’ sensors that selectively report the phosphoinositide composition of clathrin-associated structures, and the use of these sensors to follow the dynamics of phosphoinositide conversion during endocytosis. The membrane of an assembling coated pit, in equilibrium with the surrounding plasma membrane, contains phosphatidylinositol-4,5-biphosphate and a smaller amount of phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate.Closure of the vesicle interrupts free exchange with the plasma membrane. A substantial burst of phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate immediately after budding coincides with a burst of phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate, distinct from any later encounter with the phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate pool in early endosomes; phosphatidylinositol-3,4-biphosphate and the GTPase Rab5 then appear and remain as the uncoating vesicles mature into Rab5-positive endocytic intermediates. Our observations show that a cascade of molecular conversions, made possible by the separation of a vesicle from its parent membrane, can label membrane-traffic intermediates and determine their destinations.

Abstract: International audience; A study of the cheirolepidiaceous conifer Pseudofrenelopsis gansuensis from the Lower Cretaceous of Wangqing Jilin Province in China was conducted in detail using scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. In total, nine ultrastructural features were recognized for the cuticle of this fossil plant, which are helpful in the distinguishing between cuticles of ordinary epidermal cells, subsidiary cells, guard cells and hypodermal cells of the stomatal apparatus. A three dimensional reconstruction of the cuticle ultrastructure was obtained. Pseudofrenelopsis gansuensis is the second species of this genus for which the cuticle ultrastructure has been statistically examined with 30 measurements and estimated con␣dence interval values. The close comparison of the cuticle ultrastructure characters, including sta- tistical data, among Cheirolepidiaceae and other fossil conifers provides potential evidence of the taxonomic signi␣cance of this genus: ten characters are potentially valuable for speci␣c separation, eleven parameters for generic separation and three parameters seem also to be useful for Family determination. The differences in the chemical composition according to preliminary statistical element analyses of the cuticles based on three ratios in two species of Pseudofrenelopsis, P. dalatzensis and P. gansuensis, should also be examined in future studies.

Abstract: The amber fossil record is distributed worldwide but mainly supported by Northern Hemisphere deposits.The Southern Hemisphere amber fossil record is relatively scarce, due to difficulties of access andprospection. The African continent recently revealed two new amber outcrops. Previously, fossiliferous andnon fossiliferous copals were known from Africa, as well as older fossilised resins lacking fossil inclusions1.The Cretaceous resin from Congo, and the Cenozoic resin from Ethiopia, are the first African ambers knownto display arthropod and botanical inclusions.When first mentioned in 20102, the Ethiopian amber was suggested Cretaceous. This dating was rapidlyquestioned by the modern lineage taxa, described from the fossilized resin3,4. Those rather display a Cenozoicassemblage. Palynological data and field observations corroborate this revision and further indicate aMiocene age of the amber. The resin originates from an angiosperm, probably Hymenaea (Fabaceae), assuggested by its chemical signal, and the associated botanical inclusions. Cryptogam and arthropod inclusions(mainly Hymenoptera and Diptera) already display a large diversity of modern taxa. All together, fossilisedspecimens illustrate a subtropical, hot and humid, swamp forest ecosystem. Similarities with the botanicaland entomofaunal composition of the contemporaneous Dominican and Mexican ambers, suggest anaffinities between African and American Miocene ecosystems.References1. Abstract: International audience; As a crossroads for plant dispersal between Laurasia and Gondwana since at least the late Eocene, the Central Myanmar Basins have yielded rich and diverse fossil pollen. Here we report Grimmipollis burmanica, a new genus and species in the soapberry family (Sapindaceae) from the upper Eocene Yaw Formation in the Central Myanmar Basins. We also investigate its similarity of pollen sculpture with other selected genera using hierarchical cluster analysis, and its source paleoecology with pollen diagrams. Grimmipollis pollen grains are characterized by parasyncolporate apertures with an apocolpial field at each side, distinct margines along the colpi, arcuate, tuberculate and rope-shaped mesocolpial ridges, and prominent, verrucate or fossulate apocolpia. These features distinguish this genus from other syncolporate and parasyncolporate types in the extant Sapindaceae genera, and fossil pollen genera. As most syncolporate and parasyncolporate types occur in the tribe Cupanieae, G. burmanica is likely derived from an extinct Cupanieae and thus a rainforest tree species. The hierarchical cluster analysis confirms our establishment of Grimmipollis, and reveals it is morphologically close to Meyeripollis. The sedimentary environment from which these pollen grains were retrieved suggests that G. burmanica could be a member of seasonal swamp forests.

Abstract: Although infrequent in the fossil record, the extinct wasp family Spathiopterygidae have been suggested to be diverse and globally distributed during the Cretaceous, being documented in seven major amber deposits. In the present study, I describe and figure Argemiones stupeflip gen. et sp. nov. from the rich early Cenomanian Kachin amber (Myanmar). The new monotypic genus is characterized by the compound eyes with numerous ommatidia, the first four flagellomeres distinctly thinner and longer than followings, a distinctive fore wing venation, a fringe of long setae along the apical margin of fore wing, a much reduced but present hind wing, and a conspicuous petiolate first metasomal segment. The presence of Spathiopterygidae in the endemic fauna of the Burma Terrane suggests their antiquity, with a possible origin in the Upper Jurassic to the earliest Cretaceous, and dispersion between the Gondwana and the Southern and Western Laurasia during the Lower Cretaceous. I propose an updated version of the key to genera and species of the family.; Bien que rare dans le registre fossile, la famille éteinte des Spathiopterygidae semble avoir été particulièrement diverse et distribuée sur toute la planète au cours du Crétacé, en étant documenté dans sept gisements d'ambre majeurs. Dans cette étude, je décris et figure Argemiones stupeflip gen. et sp. nov., provenant du riche gisement d'ambre du Kachin (Myanmar). Le nouveau genre monospécifique est caractérisé par des yeux composés de nombreuses ommatidies, les quatre premiers flagellomères distinctement plus fins et longs que les suivants, une nervation de l'aile antérieure distincte, une frange de soie le long de la marge apicale de l'aile antérieure, des ailes postérieures réduites mais présentes et un premier segment métasomal pétiolé et visible. La présence de Spathiopterygidae au sein de la faune endémique du Burma Terrane suggère leur antiquité, soulignant une possible origine au Jurassique Supérieur ou au Crétacé précoce et une dispersion entre le Gondwana et la Laurasie méridionale et occidentale au cours du Crétacé Inférieur. Je propose une mise à jour de la clé des genres et espèces de spathiopterygidés.

Abstract: The Lancepyrinae are an extinct subfamily of Bethylidae known exclusively from Cretaceous amber deposits of Lebanon, Spain, Taimyr and Myanmar. In this study, we describe and illustrate four new genera and five new species of lancepyrine wasps from the Albian of Hkamti and late Albian-early Cenomanian of Kachin (Myanmar): Azepyris delamarreigen. et sp. nov., Burmapyris ohmkuhnleisp. nov., Gwesped groehnigen. et sp. nov., Paralanceis chotardigen. et sp. nov. and Yunbayin rosseigen. et sp. nov. These taxa not only highlight the taxonomic diversity of the Lancepyrinae during the mid-Cretaceous but they also reveal the morphological disparity of the subfamily. To establish the phylogenetic relationships of these fossils and to check the monophyly of the Lancepyrinae, we add them to a pre-existing morphological matrix and perform a cladistic analysis. We retrieve the subfamily as poorly supported yet monophyletic, with the newly described taxa deeply nested in it. A key to the genera of Lancepyrinae is provided. Finally, we erect the subfamily Cretabythinaesubfam. nov. for the genera Cretabythus Evans, 1973, Holopsenelliscus Engel, 2019 and MegalopsenellaJouault et al., 2020 as no taxonomic treatment has been provided for these taxa after the transfer of HolopsenellaEngel et al., 2016 as Aculeataincertae sedis.

Abstract: Using a fossilized birth-death model, a new phylogeny of the superfamily Evanioidea (including ensign wasps, nightshade wasps or hatchet wasps) is proposed with estimates of divergence times for its constitutive families, also corroborating the monophyly of Evanioidea. Additionally, our Bayesian analyses demonstrate the monophyly of †Anomopterellidae, †Othniodellithidae, †An-dreneliidae, Aulacidae, Gasteruptiidae, and Evaniidae, while the †Praeaulacidae and †Baissidae ap-pear to be paraphyletic lineages. Vectevaniavetula and Hyptiogastriteselectrinus are transferred in the Aulacidae. We estimate the divergence of Evanioidea in the Late Triassic (~203 Ma). Addition-ally, three new othniodellithid wasps are described and figured from mid-Cretaceous Burmese am-ber as Keradellithabasilici Jouault, Marechal, Wang & Perrichot, gen. et sp. nov., Keradellithaanubis Jouault, Marechal, Wang & Perrichot, sp. nov., and Keradellithakirina Marechal, Jouault & Perrichot sp. nov. We also document a temporal shift, in relative specific richness, between Ich-neumonoidea and Evanioidea.

Here, we describe and figure three new species in three subfamilies, from the early to middle Miocene of Totolapa (Mexico): Goniozus cotyi sp. nov. (Bethylinae), Bakeriella nanyhelae sp. nov. (Epyrinae), and Solepyris electromexicanus sp. nov. (Scleroderminae). The cosmopolitan Goniozus Förster, 1856 was already known from the Miocene of Dominican Republic, whereas the Pan-American Bakeriella Kieffer, 1910 and the South-American Solepyris Azevedo, 2006 are recorded for the first time as fossil. Our finding expands the geographical distribution of the latter genus much northward in the New World.

Abstract: International audience; Jacobsoniidae is a species-poor family of minute polyphagan beetles distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. Both extant representatives of the family as well as fossils are rare. Here we describe a new fossil species, Derolathrus capdoliensis n. sp., from latest Albian-earliest Cenomanian Charentese amber from the Cadeuil deposit, Charente-Maritime department in south-western France. The new species is defined by several unusual characters, most notably the co-joined but not fully fused two apical antennomeres. Derolathrus capdoliensis n. sp. is approximately contemporaneous with Kachin amber (burmite), filling an important geographical gap in the Mesozoic distribution of the family. The widespread distribution of jacobsoniid beetles in the Cretaceous, encompassing the Tethyan and Austral realms, indicates a more widespread distribution of the family during this time than in the present day and suggests that the current biogeographical range of Jacobsoniidae may be a result of extinction in northern regions. The new species shows remarkable similarity to extant members of the genus and provides further evidence of prolonged morphological, and probably also ecological, stasis in Jacobsoniidae since at least the Cretaceous.

Abstract: The systematic status of the genus Athalia and related genera is a perennial controversy in sawfly taxonomy. Several authors have hypothesized that the placement of Athalia within the Tenthredinidae is artificial, but no studies have focused on this topic. If the hypothesis that Athalia does not belong to Tenthredinidae can be supported, the taxonomic framework of Tenthredinoidea needs revision. We present a comprehensive phylogenomic study of Tenthredinoidae, focusing on the positions of Athalia and related genera by sampling 80 representatives mainly of the Tenthredinoidea, including Heptamelinae and Blasticotomidae. Our phylogenetic reconstructions based on nuclear genes and mitochondrial (mt) sequences support Athalia and related genera as a distinct clade sister to Tenthredinidae + (Cimbicidae + Diprionidae). A comparison of symphytan mitochondrial genomes reveals an innovative gene rearrangement pattern in Athaliidae, in which Dentathalia demonstrates a more ancestral pattern than Athalia and Hypsathalia. The lineage specificity of mt rRNA secondary structures also provides sufficient support to consider Athaliidae as a separate family. This fossil is the first known outside of the Old World for this genus and documents its wide distribution during the Paleogene, while it is currently confined to Australia and New Zealand. As for several other hymenopteran genera, we assume that this regression is linked to abiotic factors, i.e., the Cenozoic climate cooling, rather than to biotic factors.

Abstract: International audience; Rudiaeschna jarzembowskii sp. nov., the second species of the small aeshnopteran family Rudiaeschnidae, is described from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation at the Liutiaogou locality, Ningcheng County, Inner Mongolia, NE China. The new species differs from the type species of the family, namely Rudiaeschna limnobia, in possessing less cells and crossveins in nearly all parts of forewing. It also shows a distally forked vein RP2, a character that was previously only known in taxa of the much more recent and derived aeshnopteran family Aeshnidae.

Abstract: The Early Miocene (16–23 Mya) amber of Ethiopia constitutes a new source of fossil ants for Africa, where they are otherwise poorly documented. Here we report a diversified assemblage of six subfamilies and at least 19 genera that are still predominantly alive in the Afrotropics today. In this first account, a particular reference is made to the subfamily Dolichoderinae, with the description of two new species: Technomyrmex svojtkai Perrichot & Engel sp. nov. and Ravavy goldmani Boudinot & Perrichot sp. nov. The first is illustrated and described based on synchrotron-radiation microcomputed tomography, and the second represents the first fossil record for the tribe Bothriomyrmecini and Ravavy, a Malagasy and Afrotropical genus that was hitherto monotypic. The ant composition in Ethiopian amber is congruent with the global pattern emerging across ants and showing a Neogene diversification almost exclusively within extant genera.

Abstract: The past diversity of Isoptera is relatively poorly documented. Many early-diverging families are only represented today by relicts of their Mesozoic and Cenozoic richness. Therefore, the onset of their evolutionary history and the transitions between families, or even between subsocial and eusocial ways of life, remain difficult to decipher and require additional fossil occurrences. Here, we report the oldest worker/pseudergate trapped in amber and a new Mastotermitidae, both from Hkamti amber. We document a diverse assemblage of species representing early-diverging families from the ‘Mid’-Cretaceous of Myanmar, including two new genera and four new species in as many different genera: Anisotermes bourguignoni sp. nov., Longitermes pulcher gen. et sp. nov., Magnifitermes krishnai gen. et sp. nov. and Mastotermes myanmarensis sp. nov. These descriptions provide significant morphological evidence to discuss the placement of the genus Anisotermes, confidently place the new genera and confirm the monophyly of Mastotermitidae. The diversity of Cretaceous isopterans, in light of the biology of their extant representatives, is used to discuss palaeoecological implications and highlights the radiation of early diverged Isoptera in the complex Cretaceous ecosystem. The validity of the species Meiatermes cretacicus is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Chrysopidae (green lacewings) is one of the species-rich families of Neuroptera. The Cretaceous fossils of green lacewing currently comprise 11 genera and 26 species. Here we describe a new green lacewing species, Mesypochrysa coadnata sp. nov., from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. The new species belongs to the extinct subfamily Limaiinae and is characterized by the RP with seven zigzagged branches, the forewing CuA with four pectinate branches, and the hind wing CuA with three pectinate branches. The exquisite preservation of the new fossils facilitates the understanding of the genital morphology of the Mesozoic green lacewings.

Abstract: International audience; The soft‐winged flower beetles are a diverse cosmopolitan family of cleroid beetles with an unresolved higher classification, the adults of which feed on nectar and pollen. The fossil record of Melyridae is sparse, with only two described fossils known from the Mesozoic. Here we describe the first representative of the family from the Mesozoic of Europe, from early Cenomanian Charentese (French) amber. Due to the opaque nature of French amber, X‐ray microtomography was used to document fine morphological details of the fossil. Protodasytes cretaceus gen. et sp. nov. possesses a unique combination of characters within the subfamily Dasytinae, which is shared by the tribes Chaetomalachiini, Dasytini, and Listrini, namely the presence of a small antennal club, tarsomere 4 slightly shorter than 3 but not distinctly narrower, symmetrical claws, and a distinct pronotal and elytral fringe. This suggests that Dasytinae had begun to diversify by the Late Cretaceous, possibly in concert with the radiation of angiosperms. The fossil record of soft‐winged flower beetles is critically reviewed, and a checklist of extinct species is provided. The fragmentary Cenozoic fossils Troglops punctatissima and Malachius vertummni are removed from the family Melyridae, and the record of Attalus lusitanicus from Eocene–Oligocene Bembridge Marls is regarded as unlikely. The potential role of Protodasytes gen. nov. and Cretaceous melyrids as pollinators of early angiosperms is discussed.

Abstract: The data presented in this article are related to the research paper entitled “Cuticle ultrastructure of Baiera furcata from Northeast China and its implication in Taxonomy and Palaeoenvironment” (Guignard et al. 2019 [1] . The data correspond to a study of the ultrastructural fine cuticle details of fossil Baiera furcata (Ginkgoales) from the Lower Cretaceous Huolinhe Formation in Holingola of East Inner Mongolia, Northeast China. Two sets of data are provided here: 1/ thickness measurements of the layers of four types of cuticles, i.e. ordinary epidermal cells and stomatal apparatus, 2/ ten EDS element analysis of ordinary epidermal cell cuticle layers; the latter data also contain cuticle layers values of Sphenobaiera huangii from the Lower Jurassic Xiangxi Formation in Zigui of Hubei Province, Central China used for comparison in the research article; EDS cell remnant values of Baiera furcata are also included. Some of these data have been used efficiently for taxonomy and palaeoenvironment topics. As they are the first data for genera Baiera and Sphenobaiera of the Ginkgoales, they can serve in the future for considerations of taxonomical comparisons, palaeoreconstructions, palaeoenvironment and evolution.

Abstract: A study on the leaf cuticle ultrastructures of Baiera furcata from the Lower Cretaceous Huolinhe Formation in East Inner Mongolia, Northeast China, was conducted with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and elements analysis by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). TEM observation revealed the ultrastructural details from ordinary epidermal cells for both upper and lower cuticles, and stomatal apparatus, which were all made with A2 (granular) and B1 (fibrilous) layers. Additionally, well-preserved cell remnants were also observed. Comparisons with other cuticles of the Ginkgoales were made using statistical measurements and evaluations of some potential Order characteristics, and genus–species characteristics were also emphasized. Two potential ultrastructural groups can be recognized: Baiera–Sphenobaiera and Ginkgo–Ginkgoites–Pseudotorellia. This is reinforced by EDS element analysis, whereby ratios could also be compared with another closely related Ginkgoalean taxon Sphenobaiera huangii. The paleoenvironment significances is discussed, and it seems to support the TEM and EDS results. It indicates a signature in the cuticle fine details of Sphenobaiera, which has experienced a putatively warmer paleoenvironment than that of Baiera.

Abstract: International audience; Examination of fossil ant specimens from various private and institutional German collections of Baltic amber has revealed a new genus and species of Myrmicinae, described here as Thanacomyrmex hoffeinsorum gen. et sp. nov. The new worker morphotype shares some similarities with the coeval extinct genus Parameranoplus Wheeler, also from Baltic amber, and the extant genera Pristomyrmex Mayr and Acanthomyrmex Emery, suggesting placement of the new fossil in the Myrmecina genus-group within the tribe Crematogastrini. The new genus highlights the tremendous diversity of ants that evolved in the Palaeogene European forests and composed the first major radiation of crown-group ants.; L’examen de fourmis fossiles dans diverses collections privées et institutionnelles allemandes d’ambre balte a révélé un nouveau genre et une nouvelle espèce de Myrmicinae, décrits ici comme Thanacomyrmex hoffeinsorum gen. et sp. nov. Abstract: International audience; Bernasso is an Early Pleistocene locality that has a well-dated floral fossil content including both pollen grains and megaremains. Pollen record shows vegetation changes corresponding to two glacial and one interglacial periods. The megafloral fossil assemblage was interpreted as an association of present-day Mediterranean and Caucasian taxa that developed during a late interglacial stage of the beginning of the Pleistocene. In the present study, climatic reconstruction using the Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP) and the Leaf Margin Analysis (LMA) methods based on the megaflora on one hand and using the Climatic Amplitude Method (CAM) based on the pollen flora on the other hand have been used to check the qualitative climatic estimates based on the comparison between paleovegetation data and similar modern ecosystems. CLAMP and LMA analyses show that the Bernasso climate was colder than the present-day climate of Southern France and of the Hyrcanian and Euxinian regions. On contrary, CAM shows mean annual temperatures higher than the modern Bernasso temperature and equivalent to the temperature of the Hyrcanian and Euxinian regions. Mean annual precipitation and relative humidity reconstructed by CLAMP and CAM are in agreement and indicate that the climate was wetter than today at Bernasso. The differences between the three methods highlight important methodological biases that could be solved by including additional calibration sites in Europe and in the Mediterranean region.

It allows to show structures proper to this family, previously unknown. In particular, the subnodus is enforced by a dorsal chitinous bracket and the nodal furrow is very weak, suggesting that the stenophlebiid nodal complex is very particular and did not functioned as in other Odonata.

Abstract: The Zhangpu biota provides a new insight into biodiversity redistribution during the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum., During the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum [MMCO, ~14 to 17 million years (Ma) ago], global temperatures were similar to predicted temperatures for the coming century. Limited megathermal paleoclimatic and fossil data are known from this period, despite its potential as an analog for future climate conditions. Here, we report a rich middle Miocene rainforest biome, the Zhangpu biota (~14.7 Ma ago), based on material preserved in amber and associated sedimentary rocks from southeastern China. The record shows that the mid-Miocene rainforest reached at least 24.2°N and was more widespread than previously estimated. Our results not only highlight the role of tropical rainforests acting as evolutionary museums for biodiversity at the generic level but also suggest that the MMCO probably strongly shaped the East Asian biota via the northern expansion of the megathermal rainforest biome. The Zhangpu biota provides an ideal snapshot for biodiversity redistribution during global warming.

Here, we describe the first fossil species of the millipede parasitizing genus Myriophora, M. asiatica n. sp., and three new fossil species of the ant parasitizing genus Apocephalus, A. miocenus n. sp., A. dominicanus n. sp., and A. chiapanecus n. sp. discovered in Miocene amber deposits from China, Dominican Republic, and Mexico. Moreover, we add details on the previously described species Apocephalus succineus Brown, previously described in Dominican amber, with the description of a new specimen. Abstract: International audience; Sinonothochrysa zhangi Huang and Nel gen. et sp. nov., a new genus and species ofnothochrysine lacewing, is described and illustrated from the Paleocene Buxin Formation,Sanshui Basina, Foshan City, Guangdong Province, South China. The new taxon is the oldestdescribed representative and first report this subfamily in China. It is also the first formallydescribed fossil insects from the Buxin Formation of the Sanshui Basin.

Abstract: 23 pages; International audience; A ca. 0.30 m thick cherty limestone bed in the Dalong Formation at Gujiao (Guizhou) has yielded a highly diverse Changhsingian nautiloid assemblage. Its age is late Changhsingian, indicated by the co-occurring ammonoid Pseudotirolites sp. This assemblage is composed of nine species and five taxa in open nomenclature in nine genera, including one new genus and three new species: Neotainoceras zhaoi sp. nov., Nodopleuroceras gujiaoense sp. nov. and Gujiaonautilus longliensis gen. et sp. nov. Sholakoceras is for the first time recorded in South China. Compared with literature data from 52 sites in various regions worldwide, the material described here presents the most diverse Changhsingian nautiloid assemblage. Among the genera of the Gujiao assemblage, Pleuronautilus, Tainoceras and Liroceras are cosmopolitan, while the others are more endemic or genera known so far only from South China.

Abstract: Photomorphogenesis is a critical developmental process bridging light-regulated transcriptional reprogramming with morphological changes in organisms. Strikingly, the chromatin-based transcriptional control of photomorphogenesis remains poorly understood. Here, we show that the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) ortholog of ATP-dependent chromatin-remodeling factor AtINO80 represses plant photomorphogenesis. Loss of AtINO80 inhibited hypocotyl cell elongation and caused anthocyanin accumulation. Both light-induced genes and dark-induced genes were affected in the atino80 mutant. Genome-wide occupancy of the H2A.Z histone variant and levels of histone H3 were reduced in atino80. In particular, AtINO80 bound the gene body of ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5), resulting in lower chromatin incorporations of H2A.Z and H3 at HY5 in atino80. Genetic analysis revealed that AtINO80 acts in a phytochrome B- and HY5-dependent manner in the regulation of photomorphogenesis. Together, our study elucidates a mechanism wherein AtINO80 modulates nucleosome density and H2A.Z incorporation and represses the transcription of light-related genes, such as HY5, to fine tune plant photomorphogenesis.

Abstract: International audience; We describe the first Chinese Caloneurodea, Sinaspidoneura magnifica nov. gen., nov. sp., from the middle Permian Yinping Formation. This new genus and species belongs to the small family Aspidoneuridae, previously known from two genera and species, one from the latest Carboniferous of France and another from the late early Permian of North America. This discovery shows that this order was more widespread during the middle Permian than previously supposed, under a great variety of palaeoclimates. This clade is still unknown in the late Permian, and possibly became extinct because of the crisis of biodiversity that happened at the end of the middle Permian.

Abstract: International audience; Extinct haidomyrmecine “hell ants” are among the earliest ants known [1, 2]. These eusocial Cretaceous taxa diverged from extant lineages prior to the most recent common ancestor of all living ants [3] and possessed bizarre scythe-like mouthparts along with a striking array of horn-like cephalic projections [4, 5, 6]. Despite the morphological breadth of the fifteen thousand known extant ant species, phenotypic syndromes found in the Cretaceous are without parallel and the evolutionary drivers of extinct diversity are unknown. Here, we provide a mechanistic explanation for aberrant hell ant morphology through phylogenetic reconstruction and comparative methods, as well as a newly reported specimen. We report a remarkable instance of fossilized predation that provides direct evidence for the function of dorsoventrally expanded mandibles and elaborate horns. Our findings confirm the hypothesis that hell ants captured other arthropods between mandible and horn in a manner that could only be achieved by articulating their mouthparts in an axial plane perpendicular to that of modern ants. We demonstrate that the head capsule and mandibles of haidomyrmecines are uniquely integrated as a consequence of this predatory mode and covary across species while finding no evidence of such modular integration in extant ant groups. We suggest that hell ant cephalic integration—analogous to the vertebrate skull—triggered a pathway for an ancient adaptive radiation and expansion into morphospace unoccupied by any living taxon.

Abstract: In Lebanon and neighbouring countries, the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary was conventionally located at the boundary between “uppermost Jurassic” limestones, below, and “Neocomian” sandstones, above. A holostratigraphic approach based on micropalaeontology, macropaleontology, sedimentology, and sequence stratigraphy helps to redefine it more accurately. Due to the lack of any evidence for the occurrence of Berriasian strata, the hiatus related to erosion and non-deposition is there assumed to span the Berriasian, and possibly the upper Tithonian and the lower Valanginian. The Salima Formation consists of a lower marly member of Late Jurassic age and an upper oolitic member of Early Cretaceous age. The upper member becomes a formation in its own right and keeps the name Salima. In turn, the lower member represents a new, still unnamed formation.

Abstract: International audience; Odonatans are quite rare in the fossil record compared with the other insects, especially in Cretaceous amber inclusions. The extant family Platystictidae is one of the most diverse Zygoptera, but short of fossil records. In this paper, a new species, Mesosticta davidattenboroughi sp. nov., is described from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber, representing the third-known fossil species of Platystictidae. Mesosticta davidattenboroughi sp. nov. has a long IR1 beginning one cell distal of the base of RP2, confirming the previous attribution of Mesosticta Huang, Azar, Cai & Nel, 2015 to Platystictidae. It differs from other species of Mesosticta in having a long IR1 and a basally crossed subdiscoidal cell. The fossil genus Mesosticta shares the diagnostic characters of the modern platystictid genera, viz. a basally recessed ‘CuP’ (shared by all species), a very long IR1 (only in Mesosticta davidattenboroughi sp. nov.), and a specialized subdiscoidal area mostly rhomboidal in shape (only in Mesosticta electronica Zheng, Zhang, Chang & Wang, 2016). Based on the platystictid damselflies from Burmese amber, a new subfamily Mesostictinae subfam. nov. is established. Mesostictinae subfam. nov. represents the first fossil group of modern platystictid damselflies, documenting the appearance of Platystictidae as early as mid-Cretaceous. It differs from modern Platystictidae by the presence of fewer postnodal and postsubnodal crossveins, a short MP, the base of RP2 being nearer to the subnodus and the nodus lying more distally.

Abstract: International audience; The redox chemistry of anoxic continental margin settings evolved from widespread sulfide-containing (euxinic) conditions to a global ferruginous (iron-containing) state in the early Neoproterozoic era (from ~1 to 0.8 billion years ago). Ocean redox chemistry exerts a strong control on the biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus, a limiting nutrient, and hence on primary production, but the response of the phosphorus cycle to this major ocean redox transition has not been investigated. Here, we use a geochemical speciation technique to investigate the phase partitioning of phosphorus in an open marine, early Neoproterozoic succession from the Huainan Basin, North China. We find that effective removal of bioavailable phosphorus in association with iron minerals in a globally ferruginous ocean resulted in oligotrophic (nutrient limited) conditions, and hence a probable global decrease in primary production, organic carbon burial and, subsequently, oxygen production. Nevertheless, phosphorus availability and organic carbon burial were sufficient to maintain an oxidizing atmosphere. These data imply substantial nutrient-driven variability in atmospheric oxygen levels through the Proterozoic, rather than the stable levels commonly invoked.

Abstract: International audience; Embolemidae is a cosmopolitan but species-poor group of chrysidoid wasps with a scarce fossil record, despite a long evolutionary history since at least the Early Cretaceous. Here, the new species, Ampulicomorpha quesnoyensis sp. nov., is illustrated and described based on a single female found in Early Eocene amber of Oise (France). The new species is compared with the three other known fossil species of the genus, and a key to all fossil species of Ampulicomorpha is provided. This is the third European fossil species of Ampulicomorpha, which suggests that the genus was once well established in Western Europe while it is more widely distributed in the Eastern Palaearctic region today. A list of all fossil and extant Embolemidae of the world, as well as a map of their geographical distribution map, are provided. Résumé-; Une nouvelle espèce d'Ampulicomorpha Ashmead (Hymenoptera : Chrysidoidea) dans l'ambre éocène de France. Les Embolemidés sont un groupe cosmopolite mais peu diversifié de guêpes chrysidoïdes au registre fossile rare, malgré une longue histoire évolutive depuis au moins le Crétacé inférieur. Une nouvelle espèce, Ampulicomorpha quesnoyensis sp. nov., est illustrée et décrite à partir d'une femelle trouvée dans l'ambre éocène inférieur de l'Oise (France). Elle est comparée aux trois autres espèces connues pour ce genre et une clé des espèces fossiles d'Ampulicomorpha est proposée. Il s'agit de la troisième espèce européenne fossile d'Ampulicomorpha, ce qui suggère que le genre était autrefois bien établi en Europe de l'Ouest alors qu'il est davantage présent dans l'Est de la région Paléarctique aujourd'hui. Une liste des espèces fossiles et actuelles d'Embolemidae du monde ainsi qu'une carte de leur distribution géographique sont aussi proposées.

Abstract: International audience; Sclerogibbid wasps are obligate parasitoids of webspinners (Embiodea). Both groups have a particularly scarce geological record and are known since the Cretaceous: there are only four species of webspinners known from Burmese amber, and only two sclerogibbids were described from Barremian Lebanese and Cenomanian Burmese ambers. Here we report transferred genus from Aptian Choshi (Japan) amber and new sclerogibbids from Cenomanian Burmese and Charentese (France) ambers. The taxa described from Burmese amber are: Burmasclerogibba aptera gen. et sp. nov., Cretosclerogibba gen. nov. (with C. antennalis sp. nov., C. contractocollis sp. nov., C. neli sp. nov. and C. rasnitsyni sp. nov.) and Edrossia vetusta gen. et sp. nov. The first European fossil sclerogibbid Gallosclerogibba alnensis gen. et sp. nov. is described from Charentese amber. The holotype of Chosia yamadai Fujiyama, from Choshi amber, is re-described; it appears to be the oldest Laurasian sclerogibbid. The significant abundance and variety of Burmese sclerogibbid wasps (60% of fossil species known worldwide), as proxy of their hosts, were probably caused by the protection granted to them by the silk webs and possibly by the limited predation from ornithuromorph birds or crown-group ants. While all three extant sclerogibbid genera have apterous females, genera with winged females (Cretosclerogibba and Edrossia) dominated in Burmese amber. Small silk galleries from hosts may have favored the preservation of wings in females of Cretaceous sclerogibbids. Most new species described in the present paper, in addition to C. yamadai, are characterized by a very slender neck and a very long frontal process concealing the antennal toruli. These characters disappeared in extant species. We suggest that this loss was caused by a change in the fauna of predators, penalizing species with long neck and rostrum.

Abstract: International audience; Thanerocleridae is a small family of predaceous cleroid beetles with a cosmopolitan distribution. Here we describe a new genus and species, Mesozenodosus insularis gen. et sp. nov., from early Cenomanian Charentese amber from the Fouras deposit, Charente-Maritime department in south-western France. The new genus belongs to the relictual subfamily Zenodosinae represented in the Recent fauna by a single Nearctic species, Zenodosus sanguineus (Say). Mesozenodosus gen. nov. can be differentiated from Zenodosus and the two fossil zenodosine genera from the approximately contemporaneous Burmese amber by its smaller body size, more elongate body, non-carinate pronotal margins, and apical antennomere with an oval depression. The new fossil confirms a wider diversity and distribution range of Zenodosinae in the mid-Cretaceous than in the present day and provides further evidence of the relictual status of the subfamily.

Abstract: 7 pages; International audience; Protomonaxonid sponges are a major group of Cambrian and Ordovician fossils in exceptionallypreserved (especially Burgess Shale-type) faunas, but are rare thereafter. Rare examples of apparentsurviving lineages are known from the late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic, but by this time more derivedgroups of sponges have generally displaced them in at least shallow-water (shelf depth) ecosystems. Theearly Spathian (Early Triassic) Paris Biota includes abundant material of a new leptomitidprotomonaxonid, Pseudoleptomitus advenus Botting nov. gen., nov. sp., distinguished by having anunbundled longitudinal skeleton and very weak transverse component. This is the first post-Ordovicianleptomitid known, and indicates long-term survival of the group in unknown environments. Itsoccurrence near storm wave base is similar to the preferred environment of earlier examples of thefamily, suggesting either ecological rarity or taphonomic reasons for their 200-million-year absencefrom later Palaeozoic rocks.

Abstract: Since the first discovery of Pithecanthropus (Homo) erectus by E. Dubois at Trinil in 1891, over 200 hominid dentognathic remains have been collected from the Early to Middle Pleistocene deposits of Java, Indonesia, forming the largest palaeoanthropological collection in South East Asia. Most of these fossils are currently attributed to H. erectus. However, because of the substantial morphological and metric variation in the Indonesian assemblage, some robust specimens, such as the partial mandibles Sangiran 5 and Sangiran 6a, were formerly variably allocated to other taxa (Meganthropus palaeojavanicus, Pithecanthropus dubius, Pongo sp.). To resolve the taxonomic uncertainty surrounding these and other contentious Indonesian hominid specimens, we used occlusal fingerprint analysis (OFA) to reconstruct their chewing kinematics; we also used various morphometric approaches based on microtomography to examine the internal dental structures. Our results confirm the presence of Meganthropus as a Pleistocene Indonesian hominid distinct from Pongo, Gigantopithecus and Homo, and further reveal that Dubois’s H. erectus paratype molars from 1891 are not hominin (human lineage), but instead are more likely to belong to Meganthropus. Morphometric analyses of hominid teeth from Early to Middle Pleistocene Java reveal that Meganthropus was a Pleistocene Indonesian hominid distinct from Pongo, Gigantopithecus and Homo, and that molars previously assigned to Homo erectus are more likely to belong to Meganthropus.

Abstract: International audience; The middle Miocene (Langhian) Fotan Group of Zhangpu County (Fujian Province, SE China) contains a rich paleoflora including leaves and fruits of dipterocarp trees, reflecting a northern expansion of tropical dipterocarp forests during the mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum. A highly fossiliferous amber of dipterocarp origin also occurs, containing a remarkable ant fauna with more than 1 000 individuals from 9 subfamilies found to date. Myrmicinae are prevalent (65% of the total ants), followed by Dolichoderinae (9%), Ponerinae (8%), and Formicinae (6%). Myrmicines comprise more than 30 extinct species distributed in 17 extant genera, among which Carebara and Pheidole are largely dominant (33% and 28%, respectively). Lophomyrmex, Crematogaster, and Tetramorium are also well represented (ca 7% each), and several occurrences are the first fossil records of extant genera (e.g., Cardiocondyla, Gauromyrmex, Lordomyrma, Meranoplus, Proatta). The specific richness is rather high within most genera, with distinct morphological features reflecting various ecological lifestyles from hypogaeic to arboreal species and supporting the hypothesis of a well-developed mature forest. Some specimens are also fossilized in behavioral position, just as their living relatives, notably the typical repelling posture of the “acrobat ants” Crematogaster with the sting overcoming the mesosoma and suggesting that the ecological behavior is highly conservative through time. Then, the presence of Yunodorylus (Dorylinae) in colonies of Pheidole would suggest a possible association of these genera nesting in soils, which has not been observed among the current species. Overall, the ant fauna of Zhangpu amber is mostly similar to the present-day fauna that is found in tropical rainforests from SE Asia and eastern Australia, particularly the dipterocarp forests of Borneo, Philippines or Malaysia. Our findings highlight a closely related geographical distribution of some Australasian ant genera and dipterocarp forest ecosystems

Abstract: International audience; The recent interest in the Lebanese petroleum potential led to new studies mainly concerning marine petroleum source rocks, without taking in consideration the dysodiles and other associated facies from the Upper Jurassic and the Lower Cretaceous. These organic-rich outcrops of metric thickness (max. 3 m) are of limited lateral extension and often found next to volcanic deposits. Sixty-three samples were collected from 25 different localities, and were subdivided into three facies that are presented in this paper: (i) dysodiles formed by the superposition of millimetric layers that are easy to separate; (ii) dysodiles-like with distinct, but more compacted layers; (iii) non-dysodiles where the layering is not visible. The aim of this work is to assess the origin of these organic-rich rocks, and to evaluate their source rock potential. We used herein Rock-Eval pyrolysis, elemental analysis, palynofacies observation, organic petrography and molecular geochemical analyses. Rock-Eval pyrolysis reveals a very good to excellent source-rock potential for all above cited rock types, with average total organic carbon (TOC) of 14 ± 7% for the dysodiles, 19 ± 12% for the dysodiles-like and 13 ± 9% for the non-dysodiles. Hydrogen index (HI) and oxygen index (OI) values indicate a type I to II kerogen for the dysodiles (average HI = 649 ± 162 mg HC/g TOC), type I to II kerogen for the dysodiles-like (average HI = 340 ± 182 mg HC/g TOC) and type III kerogen for the non-dysodiles (average HI = 145 ± 42 mg HC/g TOC). The dominance of fluorescent amorphous organic matter (AOM) and alginite macerals confirm an algal/bacterial source of organic matter for the dysodiles. The presence of opaque AOM, phytoclasts, sporinites and cutinites macerals, suggests a variable terrestrial organic matter input for the dysodiles-like and non-dysodiles. Maturity parameters such as Tmax values (on average 428 ± 7 °C for dysodiles, 429 ± 6 °C for dysodiles-like and 424 ± 10 °C for non-dysodiles), vitrinite reflectance (1) indicate that the organic matter is still thermally immature. The present study sheds light on the long forgotten dysodile shales and similar material, and their importance as potential source rocks or oil shales. A comparison with local and regional source rocks is provided in order to emphasize the specific character of the dysodile deposits.

Abstract: International audience; Palaeoperilestes electronicus gen. et sp. nov. is the first perilestid damselfly described from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. This new damselfly can be attributed to the family Perilestidae by the midfork being distal of the subnodus and the base of IR2 quite near to the base of RP2, both features found in the extant genera Perilestes and Perissolestes. Palaeoperilestes electronicus gen. et sp. nov. has a strongly zigzagged IR1, however, differing from Perilestes and Perissolestes which have a straight IR1. The discovery not only adds to the diversity of damselflies in Burmese amber, but also puts the origin of Perilestidae back to at least the mid-Cretaceous.

Abstract: International audience; A well-preserved female hindwing of the petalurid dragonfly Sinaktassia tangi Lin, Nel & Huang, 2010 is described from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of Inner Mongolia, China. The discovery of this hindwing allows to complete the description of this Chinese Cretaceous taxon, provides distinctive features from other Aktassiidae, and indicates a comparatively wide distribution of this dragonfly in northeast China.

Abstract: International audience; Long predicted but not found, a Mesozoic amphipod is finally reported from the lower Weald Clay Formation (late Hauterivian) of the County of Surrey in Southeast England, UK. Occurring in non-marine Wealden deposits, and sideswimmer-like, this lilliputian is referred to a new senticaudatan collective group and named Gammaroidorum vonki gen. et sp. nov. Future search should focus on finer-grained insect beds to elucidate the history of small, little-known, but significant crustaceans.

Abstract: International audience; Gunterbechlya pumilio gen. et sp. nov., first putative Mesozoic Gomphidae sensu stricto, is described from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. It is remarkable in its reduced venation with quadrangular discoidal triangles, only found in the extant gomphid genera Lestinogomphus and Archaeogomphus, the 'libelluloid' Cordulephyidae and the Libellulidae: 'Tetrathemistinae'. All these taxa are small dragonflies with reduced venation. Possibly the particular quadrangular discoidal triangles of these insects are related to their small sizes. The positions of some Mesozoic taxa currently attributed to the Gomphidae are discussed and none can be considered as genuine representatives of this family.

Abstract: International audience; Examination of fossil ant specimens from various private and institutional German collections of Baltic amber has revealed a new genus and species of Myrmicinae, described here as Thanacomyrmex hoffeinsorum gen. et sp. nov. The new worker morphotype shares some similarities with the coeval extinct genus Parameranoplus Wheeler, also from Baltic amber, and the extant genera Pristomyrmex Mayr and Acanthomyrmex Emery, suggesting placement of the new fossil in the Myrmecina genus-group within the tribe Crematogastrini. The new genus highlights the tremendous diversity of ants that evolved in the Palaeogene European forests and composed the first major radiation of crown-group ants.; L’examen de fourmis fossiles dans diverses collections privées et institutionnelles allemandes d’ambre balte a révélé un nouveau genre et une nouvelle espèce de Myrmicinae, décrits ici comme Thanacomyrmex hoffeinsorum gen. et sp. nov. Ce nouveau morphotype d’ouvrière partage des similitudes avec le genre éteint Parameranoplus Wheeler, également connu de l’ambre balte, et les genres actuels Pristomyrmex Mayr et Acanthomyrmex Emery, suggérant le placement du nouveau fossile dans le groupe de genres Myrmecina, parmi la tribu Crematogastrini. Le nouveau genre souligne la grande diversité de fourmis ayant évolué dans les forêts paléogènes d’Europe et constituant la première radiation majeure du groupe couronne des fourmis.
