8. Observations of Barrier Layer Seasonal Variation in the Banda Sea.

Abstract

The Banda Sea is of crucial importance for the circulation of the world's oceans, as it is part of the connection between the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. One peculiarity of the upper ocean hydrography in the Banda Sea is the occurrence of barrier layers. The regionality and temporal variability of barrier layer thickness (BLT) in the Banda Sea are examined in this study utilizing in‐situ observations and ocean reanalysis output. It is found that a barrier layer occurs in over 90 % of the observational data profiles, and in over 72 % of those profiles, the BLT is shallower than 10 m. Furthermore, we find a seasonal cycle in BLT with a maximum thickness of about 60 m occurring during austral autumn and winter and coinciding with the presence of low saline waters fed by the regional river discharge and rainfall from the Java Sea and Makassar Strait. In addition, we identify the existence of a quasi‐permanent anticyclonic circulation cell in the Banda Sea that may support the trapping of surface freshwater by retention. The anticyclonic circulation is most likely wind‐driven because it coincides with the regional Ekman pumping pattern. Modulation of the anticyclone is via seasonal variability in the wind stress curl which in turn may explain the efficiency of freshwater retention and thus the BLT. The annual mean BLT distribution in the Banda Sea shows a preferential region of thickened barrier layers around 6o‐8oS and 124o‐126oE and resampling the pattern of the monthly mean climatology. Plain Language Summary: The Banda Sea is crucial to the circulation of the world's oceans and atmosphere due to its location within the equatorial regions of the Indonesian Maritime Continent. It links the Pacific and Indian Oceans' circulation via the Indonesian Throughflow and contributes to driving atmospheric conditions via heat and moisture fluxes. Strong salinity‐stratified barrier layers insulate the water exchange between the surface and subsurface. The formation and seasonal variation of barrier layer thickness (BLT) in the Banda Sea are analyzed based on all available observations and ocean reanalysis outputs. Observations show that the Banda Sea has a barrier layer for the most part of the season. The BLT maximum appears during austral winter (June to August) months. The seasonal BLT maximum is attributed to the near‐surface water freshening, which shoals the mixed layer depth (MLD) and deep isothermal layer depth (ILD) maintained by a steady anticyclonic gyre. Other processes, such as wind stress curl‐induced Ekman pumping associated convergence, also modulate its seasonal variability. Abstract

Proper measurement is essential to ensure a good performance of a machine to produce a high-quality product. To have a good measurement, the first thing to consider is the datum since it is used primarily for manufacturing and inspection setups. However, the common datum as defined by ASME and ISO somehow is not practical to be used for a rotating machine tool. Thus, this paper focuses to define an appropriate datum for a 3D simulated surface by including a possible source of variation or error that may exist. To achieve the objective of this paper, surface reversal measurement is used as the main approach along with aid of the correlation function in the image-processing tool. Development of the surface reversal algorithm begins as two simulated surfaces are created and undergo surface correlation to achieve the best match point between both surfaces. Then, after one of the surfaces is translated to the desired position, surface subtraction is conducted to determine the inclined plane (real datum) of the simulated surface. The algorithm ends with the validation process through surface characterization by comparing the Sz value. As a result, both surfaces show different Sz values although both have the same surface topography and result for A minus with the real datum (LSPAB) providing less error on the surface topography data compared to A-minus with AB. This evaluation proves that an appropriate datum is necessary for every measurement so that the result obtained is accurate. Abstract

Measuring the surface feature falls within the broad spectrum of Quality Control and Inspection. Since most processes in the manufacturing industry that are used to prepare surfaces often induce defects and regularities, surface metrology is required to analyse surface topography. The study of surface topography analysis focuses on surface features segmentation procedure which is crucial since it will help to enhance the essential features found on the surface. Although there are many features segmentation procedures that can help in identifying the edge on the surface as presented in previous studies, problem arises when most of them are unable to fulfill the requirements when being implemented on a particular surface topography. Thus, an approach of Double Iteration Sobel has been introduced and highlighted by considering the effects of existing surface features segmentation procedures. The aim of this development is to increase the accuracy and stability of the feature edge detection to be close to human perception on the actual edge location. The process of development and implementation on simulated 3D sloped bumps surface topography data is carried out using MATLAB software. Overall, the findings of this study showed that with the help of DIS, the effectiveness of marker-controlled watershed segmentation has been successfully improved in terms of the edge visualization and marking process. Abstract

A new and easy-to-fabricate strain sensor has been developed, based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology embedded into a thermoplastic polyurethane filament using a 3-dimensional (3D) printer. Taking advantage of the flexibility and elastic properties of the thermoplastic polyurethane material, the embedding of the FBG provides durable protection with enhanced flexibility and sensitivity, as compared to the use of a bare FBG. Results of an evaluation of its performance have shown that the FBG sensors embedded in this way can be applied effectively in the measurement of strain, with an average wavelength responsivity of 0.013 5 nm/cm of displacement for tensile strain and −0.014 2 nm/cm for compressive strain, both showing a linearity value of up to 99%. Furthermore, such an embedded FBG-based strain sensor has a sensitivity of ∼1.74 times greater than that of a bare FBG used for strain measurement and is well protected and suitable for in-the-field use. It is also observed that the thermoplastic polyurethane based (TPU-based) FBG strain sensor carries a sensitivity value of ∼2.05 times higher than that of the polylactic acid based (PLA-based) FBG strain sensor proving that TPU material can be made as the material of choice as a “sensing” pad for the FBG.

38. Surface-Mounted Tilt Sensor Using Fiber Bragg Grating Technology for Engineered Slope Monitoring With Temperature Compensation

Abstract

A surface-mounted tilt sensor was designed and fabricated to measure the inclination angle of engineered structures or slopes in two directions. The device utilizes two strain-sensitive fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for tilt angle measurement bidirectionally and one strain-free FBG to provide temperature compensation. In this work, a tilt sensor prototype was fabricated using a 3-D printer, with a robust enclosure and a miniature actuator with dimensions of $115\times 65\times30$ mm and $45\times 20\times $ 3 mm, respectively. The device was first calibrated in the laboratory for tilt and temperature parameters. For tilt calibration, the device yields a sensitivity value of 0.0135 and 0.0123 nm/° for + x- and– ${x}$ -directions. On the other hand, the device delivers a sensitivity value of 0.0105 nm/°C as the response to temperature changes. The tilt sensor was also tested for suitability in a real-field deployment where it was installed on a retaining wall and was left for four weeks. The field test data indicate no vertical displacement of the wall since the device exhibits zero inclination changes during the test period. This compact, robust, and easy-to-install tilt sensor has excellent potential for various geotechnical applications, mainly in landslide detections, ground movement, and engineered slope monitoring.

Abstract

DAS system based on φ-OTDR technique suffers from random noises that affect the signalto-noise-ratio of the extracted signals. This results in high false alarm rate, reducing the capabilities of the systems to detect vibration signals. This paper presented a thorough analysis of a denoising method using discrete wavelet function (DWT). We implemented and compared different mother wavelets such as Symlet 4, Haar, Daubechies 4 (Db4), Biorthogonal 4.4 (Bior4.4), Coiflets 3 (Coif3), Discrete approximation of Meyer wavelet (dmey), Fejér-Korovkin filters 8 (fk8) and Reverse Biorthogonal 6.8 (rbio6.8), using multiple levels of decomposition. Four denoising thresholds, Empirical Bayes, Universal Threshold, Stein's Unbiased Risk Estimation (SURE), and Minimax Estimation (Minimax) were characterized using soft threshold rule. From the results obtained, the combination of the Daubechies 4 wavelet function, level 3 decomposition, SURE denoising threshold with soft threshold rule produces the best denoising performance on the φ-OTDR data. Abstract

The phase optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) system offers several advantages suitable for distributed acoustic sensing application. It has long sensing range, great antielectromagnetic interference, and high sensitivity towards environmental vibrations. However, as a sensor system, the Φ-OTDR is limited to only collecting environmental vibrations without providing more useful information such as the location and types of events happening around the sensing region. Therefore, it requires an extensive data processing system to distinguish between different events happening within the sensing regions. In this paper, Simple Differential and Normalized Differential method were used to extract perturbation event prior to classification process comprising data organization, features extraction, and classification outcome were implemented. Gammatone Frequency Cepstral Cepstrum were used to handcraft features for classification and were obtained using Gammatone Filter processing.
