Diabetic nephropathy (DN), a severe microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), is the most common form of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and a leading cause of renal failure in end-stage renal disease. No currently available treatment can achieve complete cure. Traditional treatments have many limitations, such as painful subcutaneous insulin injections, nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity with oral medication, and poor patient compliance with continual medication intake. Given the known drawbacks, recent research has suggested that nanoparticle-based drug delivery platforms as therapeutics may provide a promising strategy for treating debilitating diseases such as DN in the future. This administration method provides multiple advantages, such as delivering the loaded drug to the precise target of action and enabling early prevention of CKD progression. This article discusses the development of the main currently used nanoplatforms, such as liposomes, polymeric NPs, and inorganic NPs, as well as the prospects and drawbacks of nanoplatform application in the treatment of CKD.

Transfer of animal and plant detritus of both terrestrial and marine origins to the deep sea occurs on the global scale. Microorganisms play an important role in mineralizing them therein, yet to identify in situ. Here we report the family Marinifilaceae that occurred as one of the most predominant bacteria thriving on the new inputs of plant and animal biomasses in both marginal and oceanic areas observed via in situ incubation about their differentiation, environmental adaption, and metabolic mechanisms underlying their prevalence in organic matter mineralizing communities. We described the metabolic features and in situ metabolizing activities of different subgroups (tentative genus level), based on the metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data. One representative subgroup MF-2 dominated plant detritus-enriched cultures and specialized in polysaccharide degradation by encoding many hydrolases involved in the hydrolysis of hemicellulose, pectin, starch, cellulose, and polysaccharides containing N-acetyl groups; this subgroup also encodes a manganese superoxide dismutase with the potential of lignin oxidation and possesses complete nitrogen fixation pathway to compensate for the shortage of nitrogen sources inside the plant detritus. In contrast, those dominating the animal tissue-supported microbiomes were more diverse and formed three subgroups, which distinguished themselves from MF-2 in carbon and nitrogen metabolisms. Regardless of differentiation in carbon and nitrogen metabolisms, they share in common in energy conservation through organic fermentation, and anaerobic respiration of diverse electron receptors. These results highlight the role of Marinifilaceae bacteria neglected before in organic matter mineralizing in marine environments coupling carbon and nitrogen cycling with metals and other elements.IMPORTANCEMicrobial mineralization of organic matters has a significant impact on the global biogeochemical cycle. This report confirmed the role of Marinifilaceae in organic degradation in the oceans, with underestimated contribution in the ocean carbon cycling. It is the dominant taxon thriving on plant and animal biomasses in our in situ incubator, as well as in whale- and wood-falls. At least nine subgroups were revealed, and widely distributed in global oceans but merely predominant in organic-rich environments with an average relative abundance of 8.3 %. Different subgroups display a preference for the degradation of different macromolecules (polysaccharides, lignin, and protein) and adapt themselves to the environments via special metabolic metabolisms.

In this report, to observe the response of indigenous microorganisms to the newly input of organic matters, we developed a series of deep-sea in situ incubators loaded on the seabed and seamount with various organic substrates of plant and animal origins. Through high-throughput sequencing, we found the bacterial communities, in situ enriched for 4–12 months, were significant different from the control groups. The bacteria of Marinifilaceae were revealed as the key members; in addition, other key decomposers including Spirochaetaceae, Psychromonadaceae, Vibrionaceae, and Moritellaceae were recruited in most assemblages, with varied abundance accordingly and diversified at the operational taxonomic unit (OTU) level. Additionally, sulphate-reducing bacteria (Desulfobulbaceae and Desulfobacteraceae) and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria (Arcobacteraceae and Sulfurovaceae) were the dominant taxa. Interestingly, PICRUSt analysis demonstrated that nitrogen fixation inside the assemblages was enriched in the enrichments with plant detritus or fatty acids. Within the assemblages stimulated by substrates short of nitrogen sources, the microbial network was dominated by cooperative relationships, whereas competition relationships overwhelmed the communities thriving on protein-rich animal tissue. These unique bacterial assemblages driven by newly input organic matters, constitute the microbial carbon pump involved in carbon, sulphur, and nitrogen cycles in oceanic interior.

Interestingly, nitrogen fixation inside the assemblages occurred in the process of polysaccharide decomposing. The microbial co-occurrence analysis revealed that nutrient availability and energy transfer determine relationships cooperation or competition. Within the assemblages stimulated by substrates short of nitrogen sources, the microbial network was dominated by cooperative relationships, whereas competition relationships overwhelmed the communities thriving on proteinous substrates. Conclusions These in-situ observations revealed a unique bacterial assemblage in decomposing diverse newly input organic matters, which may constitute the microbial pumps involved in carbon, sulphur, and nitrogen cycles in oceanic interior.

A Gram-stain-negative, facultative anaerobic, red-pigmented, rod-shaped and non-motile strain (RC1_OXG_1FT) was isolated from deep sea water of the Indian Ocean. It was able to grow at pH 5–8 (optimum, pH 7), at 5–37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), and at salinity (% NaCl, w/v) of 0.5–5 % (optimum, 1–2 %). Catalase- and oxidase-positive. It had highest 16S rRNA gene similarity (96.7 %) to ‘ Sunxiuqinia dokdonensis ’ DH1T, followed by Sunxiuqinia faeciviva JAM-BA0302T (96.6 %), Sunxiuqinia elliptica CGMCC 1.9156T (96.2 %), Sunxiuqinia rutila HG677T (96.0 %) and species (less than 92.3 %) of other genera. It belongs to the genus Sunxiuqinia within the phylum Bacteroidetes , based on the phylogenetic analysis. The results of digital DNA–DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity analyses indicated that the strain belonged to a novel species. Its genome size is 5,250, 885 bp, with DNA G+C content of 40.5 mol%. Genome analysis revealed that the strain possessed many genes involved in polysaccharide degradation, especially hemicellulose degradation, indicating that the strain could maintain its normal metabolism by using recalcitrant organic matter in the oligotrophic deep sea environment. Its principal fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified glycolipids, three unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified polar lipids. The isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, the strain represents a novel species within the genus Sunxiuqinia , for which the name Sunxiuqinia indica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RC1_OXG_1FT (=MCCC 1A13858T=KCTC 62805T).

A Gram-strain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated 216_PA32_1T, was isolated from deep-sea sediment of the Pacific Ocean. Cells of strain 216_PA32_1T were non-motile, oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. The strain could grow at temperatures of 10–45 °C (optimum, 32–35 °C), at pH 5.0–10.0 (optimum, 6.0–7.0) and at salinities of 0–10% (optimum, 2–8%). The principal fatty acid (>10 %) was summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω6c/ω7c). The sole respiratory quinone was Q10 (100 %). The polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids and five unidentified aminolipids. The G+C content of the chromosomal DNA was 66.3 mol%. According to the 16S rRNA gene similarity, strain 216_PA32_1T showed the highest sequence similarity to Pseudooceanicola nitratireducens JLT 1210T (97.3 %), followed by Pseudooceanicola nanhaiensis SS011B1-20T (97.1 %). Phylogenetic trees indicated that strain 216_PA32_1T clustered with strain P. nanhaiensis SS011B1-20T. The average nucleotide identity and the DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain 216_PA32_1T and all species of the genus Pseudooceanicola were below 79.5 and 20.6%, respectively. A combination of the phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic evidence demonstrated that strain 216_PA32_1T represents a novel species of the genus Pseudooceanicola , for which the name Pseudooceanicola pacificus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 216_PA32_1T (=MCCC 1A14128T=KCTC 72688T).

Two Gram-stain-negative, short rod-shaped and non-flagellated strains, designated 17-4AT and L52-1-41, were isolated from the surface seawater of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, respectively. The 16S rRNA genes of the two strains shared sequence similarity of 99.45 %. Strain 17-4AT shared the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity of 98.02 % with Pusillimonas caeni EBR-8-1T, followed by Pusillimonas noertemannii BN9T (97.47 %), Pusillimonas soli MJ07T (96.93 %), Parapusillimonas granuli Ch07T (96.68 %), Pusillimonas ginsengisoli DCY25T (96.65 %), Eoetvoesia caeni PB3-7BT (96.63 %), Paracandidimonas caeni 24T (96.34 %), Castellaniella defragrans 54PinT (96.28 %) and Pusillimonas harenae B201T (96.05 %). L52-1-41 shared the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity of 97.74 % with Pusillimonas caeni EBR-8-1T, followed by Pusillimonas noertemannii BN9T (97.47 %), Pusillimonas soli MJ07T (96.65 %), Parapusillimonas granuli Ch07T (96.41 %), Pusillimonas ginsengisoli DCY25T (96.37 %), Eoetvoesia caeni PB3-7BT (96.35 %), Pusillimonas harenae B201T (96.28 %), and Paracandidimonas caeni 24T (96.06 %). The results of phylogenetic analyses indicated that 17-4AT and L52-1-41 formed a stable, distinct and highly supported lineage affiliated to the genus Pusillimonas . The results of the digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) analyses indicated that they represented a single species. They featured similar genomic DNA G+C contents of 53.2–53.4 mol%. Activities of catalase and oxidase were negative for both strains. The fatty acids patterns of 17-4AT and L52-1-41 were most similar, mostly comprised of C16 : 0, C17 : 0cyclo, C18 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c). The major polar lipids of the two strains were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and unidentified aminolipids. The respiratory quinone of the two strains was Q-8. Hence, on the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data presented in this study, we proposed the classification of both strains as representatives of a novel species named Pusillimonas maritima sp. nov., with the type strain 17-4AT (=MCCC 1A12670T=KCTC 62121T=NBRC 113794T), and another strain L52-1-41 (=MCCC 1A05046=KCTC 52313).

A novel alphaproteobacterium, strain WS11T, was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the New Britain Trench. The full-length 16S rRNA gene of strain WS11T had the highest sequence similarity of 97.6 % to Rhizobium subbaraonis JC85T, followed by Mycoplana ramosa DSM 7292T (96.9 %) and Rhizobium azooxidifex Po 20/26T (96.8 %). Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated 16S rRNA, atpD and recA gene sequences showed that strain WS11T was deeply separated from the species within the family Rhizobiaceae . Phylogenomic analysis based on the whole-genome protein sequences showed that strain WS11T formed an independent monophyletic branch in the family Rhizobiaceae , paralleled with the species in the families Brucellaceae and Phyllobacteriaceae within the order Rhizobial es. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, and aerobic short rods (1.5–2.4×0.9–1.0 µm). Growth was observed at salinities ranging from 0 to 5% (optimum, 1 %), from pH 6.5 to 9 (optimum, pH 7) and at temperatures between 20 and 30 °C (optimum, 28 °C). Strain WS11T was piezotolerant, growing optimally at 0.1 MPa (range 0.1–70 MPa). The main fatty acid was summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c/C18 : 1 ω 6c). The sole respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, two unidentified aminophospholipids and an unidentified phospholipid. The genome size was about 4.36 Mbp and the G+C content was 62.3 mol%. The combined genotypic and phenotypic data show that strain WS11T represents a novel species of a novel genus in the family Rhizobiaceae , for which the name Georhizobium profundi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed (type strain WS11T=MCCC 1K03498T=KCTC 62439T).

A large amount of terrigenous organic matter (TOM) is constantly transported to the deep sea. However, relatively little is known about the microbial mineralization of TOM therein. Our recent in situ enrichment experiments revealed that Vibrio is especially enriched as one of the predominant taxa in the cultures amended with natural plant materials in the deep sea. Yet their role in the mineralization of plant-derived TOM in the deep sea remains largely unknown. Here we isolated Vibrio strains representing dominant members of the enrichments and verified their potential to degrade lignin and xylan. The isolated strains were closely related to Vibrio harveyi, V. alginolyticus, V. diabolicus, and V. parahaemolyticus. Extracellular enzyme assays, and genome and transcriptome analyses revealed diverse peroxidases, including lignin peroxidase (LiP), catalase-peroxidase (KatG), and decolorizing peroxidase (DyP), which played an important role in the depolymerization and oxidation of lignin. The study presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a next-generation lithium ion battery pack using silicon nanotube anode (SiNT), nickel–cobalt-manganese oxide cathode, and lithium hexafluorophosphate electrolyte. The battery pack is characterized with 63 kWh capacity to power a midsized electric vehicle (EV) for a 320 km range. A novel LCA model is developed through the inventory analyses of the SiNT anode manufacturing conducted on the basis of our lab-scale experimentation, and the inventory of the NMC-SiNT battery manufacturing is constructed from our industrial partners’ pilot-scale battery production facilities. The upstream and downstream inventory analyses are performed through professional LCA databases and public literature. The obtained impact results of the NMC-SiNT battery are benchmarked with those of a conventional NMC-Graphite battery pack under the same driving distance per charge baseline. Background Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are age-related diseases. It is reported that patients with CVD have a higher risk of bone loss. This retrospective study sought to reveal the association between osteoporosis and CVD in Chinese women. Although epidemiological evidence has indicated a relationship between the two, clinical data in southeast China are lacking. Methods In total, 2873 participants completed the baseline survey from January 2007 to October 2019, and 2039 were included in this retrospective study. We divided all subjects into an osteoporosis group and a non-osteoporosis group based on their bone mineral density (BMD). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to examine BMD. The general information came from the questionnaire survey. Cardiovascular diseases were defined by asking participants at the first visit and checking relevant medical records if they had suffered from hypertension, coronary heart disease, or cerebral infarction. Results According to the criterion, the osteoporosis group had 678 subjects, and the non-osteoporosis group had 1361 subjects. Subjects in the osteoporosis group had a significantly higher prevalence of hypertension and coronary heart disease. Besides, the proportion of subjects who drank tea and drank milk were relatively higher in the osteoporosis group. The odds ratio (OR) for suffering from osteoporosis was high if the patients had hypertension. Conclusions This study indicated that Chinese postmenopausal women with osteoporosis had a higher prevalence of hypertension. Hypertension was significantly associated with osteoporosis.

The existence of user data sparsity is inevitable for that the user interacts only with items of interest in the recommender system, and the abundance of cyber resources increases the scale of data makes the system data more sparse eventually, they seriously affect recommender system performance. Many researches have highlighted such problems for applying supplements to those vacancies explicitly or implicitly, to balance computing complexity and the system efficiency. CBR-recommender is proposed to learn user preference from what user really interacts to keep the integrity and virginity of such personalized information, accompanied with Covering algorithm to partition the features of rare items into some specific domains, implement high personalized requirements. Our experiments results indicates that the new system has shorter running time in the research of large-scale recommendation for computing user preference dynamically, and can perform better results to meet the individual needs with high user satisfaction.

Background: Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are age-related diseases. According to some studies, patients with CVD have a higher risk of bone loss. This retrospective study intended to reveal the correlation between osteoporosis and CVD in Chinese women. Although epidemiological evidence has provided evidence of the relationship between the two, it lacks clinical data in southeast China.Methods: The 2873 participants completed the baseline survey from January 2007 to October 2019, and 2496 were included in this retrospective study. We divided all subjects into the osteoporosis group and the non-osteoporosis group based on their bone mineral density. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to examine bone mineral density. The general information came from the questionnaire survey and medical records. Results: According to the criterion, the osteoporosis group had 799 subjects, with a mean age of 64.19 years. The non-osteoporosis group had 1697 subjects, with a mean age of 61.03 years. Subjects in the osteoporosis group had a significantly higher prevalence of hypertension and coronary heart disease. Besides, there was a higher probability of drinking tea and drinking milk in the osteoporosis group. In correlation analysis, the occurrence of osteoporosis correlated positively with hypertension and coronary heart disease. Logistic regression analysis showed that the odds of osteoporosis was high if participants had hypertension, coronary heart disease, or drank tea and drank milk. Conclusions: This study indicated that patients with osteoporosis had a higher prevalence of CVD in Chinese women, and CVD is one of the hazard factors for osteoporosis.

Recommendation systems are widely used to help their netizens find what they want from cyber space and many various applications have been developed in different areas like news feeding, entree recommending and online shopping, etc. Many researches have found that their system performance is obsession with diversity-accuracy dilemma, and recommender has to balance recommendation sequence results. CBR-recommender is suggested for it has a comprehensive expression of human sense, logics and result explanation, and has more system flexibility to integrate many AI tools in dealing with such diversity-accuracy dilemma. Covering algorithm is also proposed to dynamically cluster similar users or items as subdomain for which all users are dynamitic divided into multiple clusters according to a certain criterion. Our experiments results indicate that users with similar hobbies are assigned to the same sub-domain as many specific sub-classes, and the refined classification results are more conducive for the problem-solving.

Background The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal surgical options for different kinds of advanced hip tuberculosis, which are still controversial. Methods We reviewed seven advanced hip tuberculosis patients received operations from November 2014 to September 2018. All patients received anti-tubercular chemotherapy at least 2 weeks preoperatively and twelve months postoperatively. One active case with sinus tract of seven patients underwent three-stage operations including two debridements/cement spacer implantations and one total hip arthroplasty, while the other six cases received one = stage arthroplasty surgery. All patients are followed up based on Harris score, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and X-ray. Results The mean follow-up time was 41.6 months, while no reactivation was detected. The average Harris score increased from 40.0 preoperatively to 89.4 at the final follow-up. ESR of 3 active hip tubercular cases decreased from 143.7 mm/L at diagnosis time to 6.7 mm/L at the final follow-up. CRP of 3 active hip tubercular cases decreased from 80.01 mg/L (range, 37.34-136.92 mg/L) at diagnosis time to 1.91 mg/L (range, 1.05-2.57 mg/L) at the final follow-up. The ESR and CRP of all patients had returned to normal level at the final follow-up. No prosthesis dislocation, loosening and neurovascular injury was found. Conclusions THA is an effective and safe option for hip tuberculosis. The essentials for good outcome include early diagnosis, regular perioperative anti-tubercular chemotherapy, radical debridement of inflamed tissue and necrotic bone, staged-operation if necessary.

BackgroundRecent research has suggested that cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1) may be an important regulator of bone homeostasis. Furthermore, a whole gene chip analysis suggested that the expression levels of CLCF1 in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were downregulated in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. This study aimed to assess whether the expression levels of CLCF1 in PBMCs can reflect the severity of bone mass loss and the related fracture risk.MethodsIn all, 360 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 80 years, were included in the study. A survey to evaluate the participants’ health status, measurement of bone mineral density (BMD), routine blood test, and CLCF1 expression level test were performed.ResultsBased on the participants’ bone health, 27 (7.5%), 165 (45.83%), and 168 (46.67%) participants were divided into the normal, osteopenia, and osteoporosis groups, respectively. CLCF1 protein levels in the normal and osteopenia groups were higher than those in the osteoporosis group. While theCLCF1mRNA level was positively associated with the BMD of total femur (r= 0.169,p= 0.011) and lumbar spine (r= 0.176,p= 0.001), the protein level was positively associated with the BMD of the lumbar spine (r= 0.261,pr= 0.236,p= 0.001), greater trochanter (r= 0.228,p= 0.001), and Ward’s triangle (r= 0.149,p= 0.036). Both the mRNA and protein levels were negatively associated with osteoporosis development (r= − 0.085,p= 0.011 andr= − 0.173,p= 0.014, respectively). The association between CLCF1 protein level and fracture risk was not significant after adjusting for BMD.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first clinical study to show that CLCF1 expression levels in the PBMCs of postmenopausal women can reflect the amount of bone mass or the severity of bone mass loss.

The design of highly active, stable, and low-cost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts to replace platinum-based materials is crucial to the development of renewable energy technologies. Herein, novel 3D edge-enriched Fe3 C@C nanocrystals with a core-shell structure grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) networks (Fe3 C@C/rGO) are reported as highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the ORR. The rGO nanosheets act as a host and provide vital support for local growth of edge-enriched Fe3 C@C nanocrystals, leading to a large surface area of 263 m2 g-1 and superstable hybrid structure. The unique structural design of the Fe3 C@C/rGO hybrid enables fast mass transport and a substantial number of exposed active edge sites for electrocatalytic reaction. The Fe3 C@C/rGO hybrid exhibits excellent ORR catalytic activity, with a high positive onset potential close to 1.0 V, a Tafel slope of 65 mV dec-1 , and excellent durability with only about 8 % current density decay at 0.8 V after 20 000 s continuous operation, which is superior to that of commercial Pt/C catalyst in an alkaline electrolyte.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic and heterotrophic strain, designated 1-19bT, was isolated from surface seawater in the Indian Ocean. The cells were ovoid or coccus (0.8–1.0 µm in diameter) with no flagellum. Activities of catalase and oxidase were positive. Growth was observed at salinity of 0.5–10 (%NaCl, w/v) with an optimum of 3–4, at pH 5–10 with an optimum of 7–8, and at 5–37 °C with an optimum of 28-35 °C. It accumulated poly-β-hydroxybutyrate granules inside the cell. Bacteriochlorophyll a was absent. The respiratory quinone was Q-10 and the dominant fatty acid was summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c). The major polar lipids comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid and two unidentified polar lipids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 1-19bT belonged to the family Rhodobacteraceae and formed a distinct monophyletic clade with 'Oceaniovalibus guishaninsula' JLT2003 and Pontibaca methylaminivorans GRP21T, exhibiting similarities of 94.7 and 92.2 %, respectively. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.2 mol%. Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strain 1-19bT represents a novel species in a new genus of the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which the name Oceaniglobus indicus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain 1-19bT (=MCCC 1A11863T=KCTC 52709T).
