Made up of more than seven thousand islands at a geographical crossroads between East Asia and the Pacific Ocean, the Philippine archipelago has historically been a zone of interaction between the world’s major civilizations (Western Christian Humanism, Islam and China) on anAustronesiansubstratum. Along with the major languages (Tagalog, Bisaya, Ilocano, Bicolano, Pampangueño, Pangasinan, Ibanag, Ibatan, Waray-Waray, Hiligaynon, Tausug, Maguindanao, Manarao, Sama or Kannadai) and dozens of minority languages and variants, the Filipino built his faith in Latin and his nation in Spanish, while English has determined the modernity of the first Republic of Asia, currently with more than one hundred million people. The current national language,Filipino, is the twenty-fifth language in the world by number of speakers. Along with the two most widespread Western languages, the archipelago has a centuries-old relationship with the Arabic and Chinese languages, and newly created languages such as the Hispanic creoleChabacano, with two million speakers. This Babylonian scenario has made the Philippines a privileged laboratory of multilingualism, translation and cultural transmission in Asia, a cosmopolis between East and West and a theater of the global world.

Compuesto por más de siete mil islas en un cruce de caminos geográfico entre Asia oriental y el océano Pacífico, el archipiélago filipino ha sido históricamente zona de interacción entre las principales civilizaciones del mundo (el humanismo cristiano occidental, el Islam y China) sobre un sustrato austronesio. Junto a sus propias lenguas mayoritarias (tagalo, bisaya, ilocano, bicolano, pampangueño, pangasinán, ibanag, ibatán, waray-waray, hiligaynon, tausug, maguindanao, manarao, sama o cancanái) y decenas de lenguas y variantes minoritarias, el filipino construyó su fe en latín y su nación en español, al tiempo que el inglés ha determinado la modernidad de constituirse como la primera república parlamentaria de Asia, actualmente con más de cien millones de personas. La actual lengua nacional, el filipino, es la lengua número veinticinco del mundo por número de hablantes. Junto a las dos lenguas occidentales más extendidas, el archipiélago posee una secular relación con las lenguas árabe y china, e idiomas de nueva creación como el criollo hispánico chabacano, con dos millones de hablantes. Este escenario babilónico ha hecho que Filipinas sea laboratorio privilegiado del plurilingüismo, la traducción y la transmisión cultural en Asia, cosmópolis entre oriente y occidente y teatro del mundo global.

Aquesta tesi analitza la transmissió, arrelament i transformació de l’Humanisme occidental a les illes Filipines, i el desenvolupament del món lletrat filipí durant l’Edat Moderna, fins a la consolidació d’un classicisme estètic i literari propi per a l’expressió filipina, en el context vuitcentista de recerca d’identitat i independència intel·lectual. Atenent a la “morfologia de les civilitzacions” i a la tradició de la Història de la Cultura de Huizinga, a la llum de la historiografia i l’actual estat de l’art, tractem de donar unitat de pensament a una idea: el Classicisme filipí. Plantegem que, més que una dialèctica que trenca amb el passat i estableix una imposició imperial hispànica, la cultura moderna filipina suposa una continuïtat dialògica amb la cosmovisió vernacla. Si ben bé les formes externes s’hispanitzen, encara perviu el món prehispànic. Ho plantegem, igualment, no com a resistència ‘agencial’ —des de l’anglès agency, la capacitat d’exercir poder contra l’estructura dominant— a la llum de la crítica postcolonial, sinó des del marc de la Història de les Idees i les Mentalitats, i fent ús, en concret, de dos metodologies: el Comparatisme i la Història connectada. En relació amb la primera, proposem una comparació inusitada, sorprenent per inesperada, «València i Filipines». Més concretament, volem proposar la possible influència de la literatura i el Regne de València en el desenvolupament de l’Humanisme a les illes Filipines durant la primera Edat Moderna, i per a la formació d’aquest Classicisme vuitcentista filipí. Estudiem llavors la implantació d’un sistema educatiu, la impremta i la circulació de llibres, i les literatures en llatí i castellà. Seguidament descrivim i analitzem el desenvolupament del teatre escolar i commemoratiu, així com el teatre autòcton, les diferents vessants de la Passió de Crist a l’arxipèlag, i els drames de conquesta de moros i cristians de la Comèdia filipina. Es forma, així, un teatre conscientment nacional, la importància del qual és decisiva per al desenvolupament d’una mentalitat nacionalista. Mateixa estructura temàtica al voltant de la categoria estètica de l’Exòtic dona forma al Romancer filipí, que estudiem a continuació. Ressaltem aleshores la rellevància d’obres com La Passió de Jesu christ, segons que recita lo mestre Gamaliel (c. 1493), la Historia del invencible caballero Don Olivante de Laura, Príncipe de Macedonia, que por sus admirables hazañas vino a ser Emperador de Constantinopla (1564), o el Sacro Monte Parnaso (1687), obres que cal estudiar en ulteriors treballs, així com el procés de transmissió i reescriptura del Romancer hispànic a les Filipines. Pel que fa a la connexió de la Història, plantegem que alguns dels fenòmens culturals i cultemes occidentals exportats a l’Àsia oriental daten d’abans de l’Era dels Descobriments i l’expansió de les nacions europees cristianes. Així, plantegem que la civilització islàmica també és hereva del Mediterrani clàssic. Estudiem com a micro-relat la presència de la figura d’Alexandre el Gran a les Filipines islamitzades abans de l’arribada dels espanyols. Per altra banda, estudiem el decurs com a tòpic literari de «València-com-a-paradís-perdut», des de la literatura àrab del Llevant d’al-Andalus, fins a les illes Filipines, és a dir, des de la fórmula elegíaca medieval (tant àrab com cristiana) a la representació i reconstrucció d’un Regne de València mitificat en una poesia asiàtica. Tractem, aleshores, de relativitzar l’exotisme en un marc de literatura comparada, i d’extraure connexions inusitades des de la literatura àrab valenciana a la literatura filipina en llengües tagala o bicolana. Presentem doncs una tesi que escomet principalment dos tasques i que es pot dividir en dos parts: 1) un estudi preliminar i autònom sobre els diferents aspectes de l’Humanisme a les Filipines, amb un estudi de cas concret sobre el Regne de València i les Lletres Filipines; i 2) la recopilació de set articles ja publicats ordenats segons la matèria tractada en paral·lel amb l’estudi preliminar, i justificats segons els criteris adients a les publicacions científiques, acollint-nos a l’Article 8 del Reglament sobre depòsit, avaluació i defensa de la tesi doctoral de la Universitat de València. Al capdavall, presentem una tesi disciplinàriament filipinista, filològica i classicista, en la variant valenciana de la llengua catalana, manifestant la seua pertinença lingüística en qualsevol estudi científic, i la necessitat, humanística, d’abastir la universalitat des de la paraula. This thesis analyzes the transmission, adaptation and transformation of Western Humanism in the Philippine Islands, and the development of the Filipino literary world during the Modern Age. It traces the origins of an aesthetic and literary Classic ethos for local expression during the 19th century search for identity and intellectual independence. In the light of historiography and the current state of the art, we try to give unity of thought to an idea: Philippine Classicism. We argue that, rather than a dialectic that breaks with the past and establishes a Hispanic imperial imposition, modern Filipino culture assumes a dialogical continuity with the vernacular worldview. Although the external forms are Hispanicized, the pre-Hispanic world still survives. Beyond the essential concept of ‘agency’ in Postcolonial Criticism, the present thesis searches the framework within the History of Ideas and Mentalities, and making use of two methodologies: Comparatism and Connected History. In relation to the first, we propose an unusual comparison, surprising because unexpected, “Valencia and the Philippines.” More specifically, we want to propose the possible influence of the literature produced in the old Kingdom of Valencia to inquire the nature and development of Humanism in the Philippine Islands during the early Modern Age, and for the formation of this 19th century Philippine Classicism. We then study the implementation of an educational system, the printing press and the circulation of books, and the literatures in Latin and Spanish languages. Afterwards we describe and analyze the introduction of school and commemorative theater, as well as native theater, the different aspects of the Passion of Christ in the archipelago, and the comedies of Moros y Cristianos. Accordingly, a national theater is formed, whose importance is decisive for the development of a nationalist mentality in the islands. The same thematic structure around the aesthetic category of the Exotic gives shape to the Filipino Romancero. We then highlight the relevance of works such as La Passió de Jesu christ, segons que recita lo mestre Gamaliel (c. 1493), the Historia del invencible caballero Don Olivante de Laura, Príncipe de Macedonia, que por sus admirables hazañas vino a ser Emperador de Constantinopla (1564), or Sacro Monte Parnaso (1687), works that need to be studied in subsequent works, as well as the process of transmission and rewriting of the Hispanic Romancero in the Philippines. Regarding the connection of History, we propose that some of the cultural phenomena and western items exported to Eastern Asia date from before the Age of Discovery and the expansion of the Christian European nations. Thus, we propose that the Islamic civilization is also the heir of the classical Mediterranean. We study as a micro-narrative the presence of the figure of Alexander the Great in the Islamized Philippines before the arrival of the Spanish. On the other hand, we study the course as a literary cliché of “Valencia-as-lost-Paradise,” from the Arabic literature of oriental al-Andalus, to the Philippine islands, that is to say, from the medieval elegiac formula (both Arabic and Christian) to the representation and reconstruction of a mythologized Kingdom of Valencia in an Asian poetry. We try, then, to relativize exoticism in a framework of comparative literature, and to extract unusual connections from Valencian Arabic literature to Philippine literature in the Tagalog or Bicolano languages. Overall, we present a thesis that mainly undertakes two tasks and that can be divided into two parts: 1) a preliminary and autonomous study on the different aspects of Humanism in the Philippines, with a specific case study on the Kingdom of Valencia and the Philippine Literature; and 2) the compilation of seven articles already published ordered according to the subject treated in parallel with the preliminary study, and justified according to the criteria suitable for scientific publications, taking into account Article 8 of the «Regulation on deposit, evaluation and defense of the doctoral thesis at the University of Valencia.» In sum, we present a thesis rooted in Philippine Studies, Classical Philology and Comparative Literature, in the Valencian variant of the Catalan language, affirming its linguistic relevance in any scientific study, and the humanistic need to provide universality from the single word.

The article studies the development of the concept of Valencia as «Lost Paradise», from Sharq al-Andalus Arabic literature to the metrical romances developed in the Philippine Archipelago. The paper focuses on the conceptualization of Valencian Elegy and its use as literary topic from eastern al-Andalus to the easternmost Hispanic domain, explaining the implications of Romancero in the Philippines and the presence of the Kingdom of Valencia in Philippine Literature. The fall of Islamic Valencia under the Christians created a literary fascination for Valencia as paradise, which would cross cultures as literary topic. Its influence on Asian literature would prove to be significant in the conformation of Philippine classicism based on Moors and Christians dramas and romanceros. A family of catechol-based submicron particles, with sizes between 200 and 300 nm, was tested for the removal of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) in water. The highest adsorption capacity was obtained with catechol-based particles in the case of Pb(II), followed by Cd(II). However, the catechol particles failed to adsorb Cr(VI). Our results indicate an up to four-fold increase of the adsorption capacity of these particles compared to that of activated carbon under the same experimental conditions. To check the biocompatible character of the submicron particles, their stability was evaluated in a phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and in a cell culture medium. The results confirmed that the presence of proteins in the medium favors their stability. A bioluminescent Vibrio fischeri test and a cytotoxicity assay on the HepG2 cell line were used to determine that the catechol particles did not exhibit any substantial toxicity. The results show that these catechol-based particles can be used as an efficient biocompatible adsorbent to remove heavy metals at extremely low concentrations., A. R.
