Galaxy mergers trigger both star formation and accretion onto the central supermassive black hole. As a result of subsequent energetic feedback processes, it has long been proposed that star formation may be promptly extinguished in galaxy merger remnants. However, this prediction of widespread, rapid quenching in late stage mergers has been recently called into question with modern simulations and has never been tested observationally. Here we perform the first empirical assessment of the long-predicted end phase in the merger sequence. Based on a sample of ~500 post-mergers identified from the Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS), we show that the frequency of post-merger galaxies that have rapidly shutdown their star formation following a previous starburst is 30-60 times higher than expected from a control sample of non-merging galaxies. No such excess is found in a sample of close galaxy pairs, demonstrating that mergers can indeed lead to a rapid halt to star formation, but that this process only manifests after coalescence., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The timescales for galaxy quenching offer clues to its underlying physical drivers. We investigate central galaxy quenching timescales in the IllustrisTNG 100-1 simulation, their evolution over time, and the pre-quenching properties of galaxies that predict their quenching timescales. Defining quenching duration $\tau_q$ as the time between crossing sSFR thresholds, we find that $\sim$40% of galaxies quench rapidly with $\tau_q$1 Gyr) were more massive, had more massive black holes, had larger stellar radii and accreted gas with higher specific angular momentum (AM) prior to quenching. These properties evolve little by $z=0$, except for the accreting gas AM for fast quenchers, which reaches the same high AM as the gas in slow quenchers. By $z=0$, slow quenchers also have residual star formation in extended gas rings. Using the expected relationship between stellar age gradient and $\tau_q$ for inside-out quenching we find agreement with MaNGA IFU observations. Bronchomotor tone modulated by airway smooth muscle shortening represents a key mechanism that increases airway resistance in asthma. Altered glucose metabolism in inflammatory and airway structural cells is associated with asthma. Although these observations suggest a causal link between glucose metabolism and airway hyperresponsiveness, the mechanisms are unclear. We hypothesized that glycolysis modulates excitation-contraction coupling in human airway smooth muscle (HASM) cells. Cultured HASM cells from human lung donors were subject to metabolic screenings using Seahorse XF cell assay. HASM cell monolayers were treated with vehicle or PFK15 (1-(Pyridin-4-yl)-3-(quinolin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one), an inhibitor of PFKFB3 (PFK-1,6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 3) that generates an allosteric activator for glycolysis rate-limiting enzyme PFK1 (phosphofructokinase 1), for 5-240 minutes, and baseline and agonist-induced phosphorylation of MLC (myosin light chain), MYPT1 (myosin phosphatase regulatory subunit 1), Akt, RhoA, and cytosolic Ca

Quiescence in galaxies correlates strongly with the central density/morphology of the stellar distribution. We investigate two possible explanations for this morphology-quiescence relation: 1) the central density results from a dissipative core-building event ("compaction") that feeds an AGN that quenches the galaxy and 2) the central density results from inside-out growth by galaxy-wide star formation that is quenched by processes unrelated to the central density. We aim to distinguish these two scenarios using the MaNGA survey to determine profiles of stellar age, specific star formation rate (sSFR) and gas phase metallicity (O/H) as a function of stellar mass surface density within 1 kpc (Sigma_1kpc) and total stellar mass (M*). We find that gradients in age, sSFR and O/H depend on the galaxy's position on the Sigma_1kpc-M* diagram, suggesting at least two evolutionary pathways. The first pathway consists of galaxies with low Sigma_1kpc for their M* whose centres are old, metal-rich and suppressed in sSFR compared to their outskirts, consistent with the inside-out growth scenario. The second pathway, consistent with a compaction-like core-building scenario, consists of galaxies with higher Sigma_1kpc for their M*, whose centres are younger, enhanced in sSFR and metal-deficient compared to their outskirts. Moreover, the WISE-selected AGN fraction peaks in the same area of the Sigma_1kpc-M* diagram as the core-building pathway. The sSFR profiles of the quiescent population suggest that galaxies on the compaction-like path quench uniformly, while those on the inside-out growing path quench their centres first. Our results imply that both pathways contribute to the morphology-quiescence relation.

Galaxy mergers are traditionally one of the favoured mechanisms for quenching star formation. To test this paradigm in the context of modern cosmological simulations, we use the IllustrisTNG simulation to investigate the impact of individual merger events on quenching (i.e. star formation rate at least 3sig below the star-forming main sequence) within 500Myr after the coalescence phase.The rate of quenching amongst recently merged galaxies is compared with a control sample that is matched in redshift, stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), black hole mass and environment.We find quenching to be uncommon among the descendants of post-merger galaxies, with only 5% of galaxies quenching within 500 Myr after the merger.Despite this low absolute rate, we find that quenching occurs in post-mergers at twice the rate of the control galaxies.The fraction of quenched post-merger descendants 1.5 Gyr after the merger becomes statistically indistinguishable from that of non-post-mergers, suggesting that mergers could speed up the quenching process in those post-mergers whose progenitors had physical conditions able to sustain effective active galactic nuclei (AGN) kinetic feedback, thus capable of removing gas from galaxies.Our results indicate that although quenching does not commonly occur promptly after coalescence, mergers nonetheless do promote the cessation of star formation in some post-mergers. We find that, in IllustrisTNG, it is the implementation of the AGN kinetic feedback that is responsible for quenching post-mergers, as well as non-post-merger controls.As a result of the released kinetic energy, galaxies experience gas loss and eventually, they will quench.Galaxies with an initially low gas fraction show a preferable pre-disposition towards quenching.The primary distinguishing factor between quenched and star-forming galaxies is gas fraction, with a sharp boundary at fgas=0.1 in TNG., 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the structural evolution of isolated star-forming galaxies in the Illustris TNG100-1 hydrodynamical simulation, with a focus on investigating the growth of the central core density within 2 kpc ($\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$) in relation to total stellar mass ($M_*$) at z < 0.5. First, we show that several observational trends in the $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$-$M_*$ plane are qualitatively reproduced in IllustrisTNG, including the distributions of AGN, star forming galaxies, quiescent galaxies, and radial profiles of stellar age, sSFR, and metallicity. We find that galaxies with dense cores evolve parallel to the $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$-$M_*$ relation, while galaxies with diffuse cores evolve along shallower trajectories. We investigate possible drivers of rapid growth in $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$ compared to $M_*$. Both the current sSFR gradient and the BH accretion rate are indicators of past core growth, but are not predictors of future core growth. Major mergers (although rare in our sample; $\sim$10%) cause steeper core growth, except for high mass ($M_*$ >$\sim$ $10^{10} M_{\odot}$) mergers, which are mostly dry. Disc instabilities, as measured by the fraction of mass with Toomre Q < 2, are not predictive of rapid core growth. Instead, rapid core growth results in more stable discs. The cumulative black hole feedback history sets the maximum rate of core growth, preventing rapid growth in high-mass galaxies ($M_*$ >$\sim$ $10^{9.5} M_{\odot}$). For massive galaxies the total specific angular momentum of accreting gas is the most important predictor of future core growth. Our results suggest that the angular momentum of accreting gas controls the slope, width and zero-point evolution of the $\Sigma_{*,2kpc}$-$M_*$ relation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Obesity is emerging as a global public health epidemic. The co-morbidities associated with obesity significantly contribute to reduced quality of life, mortality, and global healthcare burden. Compared to other asthma comorbidities, obesity prominently engenders susceptibility to inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), contributes to greater disease severity and evokes insensitivity to current therapies. Unlike in other metabolic diseases associated with obesity, the mechanistic link between obesity and airway diseases is only poorly defined. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is a pleiotropic inflammatory cytokine belonging to a family of growth factors with pivotal roles in asthma. In this review, we summarize the role of TGF-β in major obesity-associated co-morbidities to shed light on mechanisms of the diseases. Literature evidence shows that TGF-β mechanistically links many co-morbidities with obesity through its profibrotic, remodeling, and proinflammatory functions. We posit that TGF-β plays a similar mechanistic role in obesity-associated inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma and COPD. Concerning the role of TGF-β on metabolic effects of obesity, we posit that TGF-β has a similar mechanistic role in obesity-associated inflammatory airway diseases in interplay with different comorbidities such as hypertension, metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes, and cardiomyopathies. We use the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to investigate how the specific star formation rates (sSFRs) of massive galaxies $(M_* > 10^{10} M_\odot)$ depend on the distance to their closest companions. We estimate sSFR enhancements by comparing with control samples that are matched in redshift, stellar mass, local density and isolation, and we restrict our analysis to pairs with stellar mass ratios of 0.1 to 10. At small separations (~15 kpc), the mean sSFR is enhanced by a factor of 2.0 $\pm$ 0.1 in the flagship (110.7 Mpc)$^3$ simulation (TNG100-1). Statistically significant enhancements extend out to 3D separations of 280 kpc in the (302.6 Mpc)$^3$ simulation (TNG300-1). We find similar trends in the EAGLE and Illustris simulations, although their sSFR enhancements are lower than those in TNG100-1 by about a factor of two. Enhancements in IllustrisTNG galaxies are seen throughout the redshift range explored ($0 \leq z < 1$), with the strength of the enhancements decreasing with increasing redshift for galaxies with close companions. In order to more closely compare with observational results, we separately consider 2D projected distances between galaxies in IllustrisTNG. We detect significant sSFR enhancements out to projected separations of 260 kpc in TNG300-1, with projection effects diluting the size of the enhancements by about 20 per cent below 50 kpc. We find similar sSFR enhancements in TNG100-1 and Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies, with enhancements extending out to projected separations of about 150 kpc for star-forming galaxies at $z < 0.2$. Finally, by summing over all separations, we estimate that the presence of closest companions boosts the average sSFR of massive galaxies in TNG100-1 by 14.5 per cent., 19 pages, 13 figures. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to evaluate whether omission of intrauterine cleaning increases intraoperative and postoperative complications among women who deliver via cesarean section. METHODS: We randomized 206 women undergoing primary elective cesarean deliveries to intrauterine cleaning or omission of cleaning. Postpartum endomyometritis rates across groups were the primary outcome. We also examined secondary outcomes. To detect a 20% difference in infection rate between the cleaned and the non-cleaned groups (two-tailed [alpha] = 0.05, [beta] = 0.2), 103 women were required per group. Analysis was by intention-to-treat. RESULTS: Two hundred and six were randomized as follows: 103 to intrauterine cleaning and 103 to omission of cleaning after placental delivery. There were no statistically significant differences in the rate of endomyometritis between the two groups (2.0% versus 2.9%, RR =0.60; 95% CI 0.40–1.32). There were no statistically significant differences in postpartum hemorrhage rates (5.8% versus 7.7%, RR 0.75; 95% CI 0.6–1.2), hospital readmission rates (2.9 versus 3.8%, RR 0.75; 95% CI 0.5–1.6), time to return of gastrointestinal function, need for repeat surgery, or quantitated blood loss between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our randomized controlled trial provides evidence suggesting that omission of intrauterine cleaning during cesarean deliveries in women at low risk of infection does not increase intraoperative or postoperative complications.

We use bulge-type classifications of 809 representative SDSS galaxies by Gadotti (2009) to classify a large sample of galaxies into real bulges (classical or elliptical) and pseudobulges using Random Forest. We use structural and stellar population predictors that can easily be measured without image decomposition. Multiple parameters such as the central mass density with 1 kpc, concentration index, S��rsic index and velocity dispersion do result in accurate bulge classifications when combined together. We classify $\sim 44,500$ face-on galaxies above stellar mass of 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ and redshift $ 0.02 < z < 0.07$ into real bulges or pseudobulges with $93 \pm 2$\% accuracy. We show that $\sim 75 - 90\%$ of AGNs identified by the optical line ratio diagnostic are hosted by real bulges. The pseudobulge fraction significantly decreases with AGN signature as the line ratios change from indicating pure star formation ($\sim 54 \pm 4$ \%), to composite of star formation and AGN ($\sim 18 \pm 3$\%), and to AGN-dominated galaxies ($\sim 5 \pm 3$\%). Using the dust-corrected [\ion{O}{3}] luminosity as an AGN accretion indicator, and the stellar mass and radius as proxies for a black hole mass, we find that AGNs in real bulges have lower Eddington ratios than AGNs in pseudobulges. Real bulges have a wide range of AGN and star formation activities, although most of them are weak AGNs. For both bulge-types, their Eddington ratios are correlated with specific star formation rates (SSFR). We have obtained data for 41 star forming galaxies in the MUSE Atlas of Disks (MAD) survey with VLT/MUSE. These data allow us, at high resolution of a few 100 pc, to extract ionized gas kinematics ($V, \sigma$) of the centers of nearby star forming galaxies spanning 3 dex in stellar mass. This paper outlines the methodology for measuring the ionized gas kinematics, which we will use in subsequent papers of this survey. We also show how the maps can be used to study the kinematics of diffuse ionized gas for galaxies of various inclinations and masses. Using two different methods to identify the diffuse ionized gas, we measure rotation velocities of this gas for a subsample of 6 galaxies. We find that the diffuse ionized gas rotates on average slower than the star forming gas with lags of 0-10 km/s while also having higher velocity dispersion. The magnitude of these lags is on average 5 km/s lower than observed velocity lags between ionized and molecular gas. Using Jeans models to interpret the lags in rotation velocity and the increase in velocity dispersion we show that most of the diffuse ionized gas kinematics are consistent with its emission originating from a somewhat thicker layer than the star forming gas, with a scale height that is lower than that of the stellar disk., Comment: 22 pages, accepted by MNRAS

Existing models of galaxy formation have not yet explained striking correlations between structure and star-formation activity in galaxies, notably the sloped and moving boundaries that divide star-forming from quenched galaxies in key structural diagrams. This paper uses these and other relations to ``reverse-engineer'' the quenching process for central galaxies. The basic idea is that star-forming galaxies with larger radii (at a given stellar mass) have lower black-hole masses due to lower central densities. Galaxies cross into the green valley when the cumulative effective energy radiated by their black hole equals $\sim4\times$ their halo-gas binding energy. Since larger-radii galaxies have smaller black holes, one finds they must evolve to higher stellar masses in order to meet this halo-energy criterion, which explains the sloping boundaries. A possible cause of radii differences among star-forming galaxies is halo concentration. The evolutionary tracks of star-forming galaxies are nearly parallel to the green-valley boundaries, and it is mainly the sideways motions of these boundaries with cosmic time that cause galaxies to quench. BH-scaling laws for star-forming, quenched, and green-valley galaxies are different, and most BH mass growth takes place in the green valley. Implications include: the radii of star-forming galaxies are an important second parameter in shaping their black holes; black holes are connected to their halos but in different ways for star-forming, quenched, and green-valley galaxies; and the same BH-halo quenching mechanism has been in place since $z \sim 3$. Significance: High-mobility group protein box 1 (HMGB1), a ubiquitous nuclear protein, regulates chromatin structure and modulates the expression of many genes involved in the pathogenesis of lung cancer and many other lung diseases, including those that regulate cell cycle control, cell death, and DNA replication and repair. Extracellular HMGB1, whether passively released or actively secreted, is a danger signal that elicits proinflammatory responses, impairs macrophage phagocytosis and efferocytosis, and alters vascular remodeling. This can result in excessive pulmonary inflammation and compromised host defense against lung infections, causing a deleterious feedback cycle. Recent Advances: HMGB1 has been identified as a biomarker and mediator of the pathogenesis of numerous lung disorders. In addition, post-translational modifications of HMGB1, including acetylation, phosphorylation, and oxidation, have been postulated to affect its localization and physiological and pathophysiological effects, such as the initiation and progression of lung diseases. Critical Issues: The molecular mechanisms underlying how HMGB1 drives the pathogenesis of different lung diseases and novel therapeutic approaches targeting HMGB1 remain to be elucidated. Future Directions: Additional research is needed to identify the roles and functions of modified HMGB1 produced by different post-translational modifications and their significance in the pathogenesis of lung diseases. Such studies will provide information for novel approaches targeting HMGB1 as a treatment for lung diseases.

This paper studies pseudo-bulges (P-bulges) and classical bulges (C-bulges) in Sloan Digital Sky Survey central galaxies using the new bulge indicator $\Delta\Sigma_1$, which measures relative central stellar-mass surface density within 1 kpc. We compare $\Delta\Sigma_1$ to the established bulge-type indicator $\Delta\langle\mu_e\rangle$ from Gadotti (2009) and show that classifying by $\Delta\Sigma_1$ agrees well with $\Delta\langle\mu_e\rangle$. $\Delta\Sigma_1$ requires no bulge-disk decomposition and can be measured on SDSS images out to $z = 0.07$. Bulge types using it are mapped onto twenty different structural and stellar-population properties for 12,000 SDSS central galaxies with masses 10.0 < log $M_*$/$M_{\odot}$ < 10.4. New trends emerge from this large sample. Structural parameters show fairly linear log-log relations vs. $\Delta\Sigma_1$ and $\Delta\langle\mu_e\rangle$ with only moderate scatter, while stellar-population parameters show a highly non-linear "elbow" in which specific star-formation rate remains roughly flat with increasing central density and then falls rapidly at the elbow, where galaxies begin to quench. P-bulges occupy the low-density end of the horizontal arm of the elbow and are universally star-forming, while C-bulges occupy the elbow and the vertical branch and exhibit a wide range of star-formation rates at fixed density. The non-linear relation between central density and star-formation rate has been seen before, but this mapping onto bulge class is new. The wide range of star-formation rates in C-bulges helps to explain why bulge classifications using different parameters have sometimes disagreed in the past. The elbow-shaped relation between density and stellar indices suggests that central structure and stellar-populations evolve at different rates as galaxies begin to quench., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, published in MNRAS

We investigate the dependence of galaxy structure on a variety of galactic and environmental parameters for ~500,000 galaxies at z, Accepted to MNRAS. 31 pages, 15 figures

We present a structural and morphological catalogue for 45 million objects selected from the first year of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Single Sersic fits and non-parametric measurements are produced for g, r and i filters. The parameters from the best-fitting Sersic model (total magnitude, half-light radius, Sersic index, axis ratio and position angle) are measured with Galfit; the non-parametric coefficients (concentration, asymmetry, clumpiness, Gini, M20) are provided using the Zurich Estimator of Structural Types (ZEST+). To study the statistical uncertainties, we consider a sample of state-of-the-art image simulations with a realistic distribution in the input parameter space and then process and analyse them as we do with real data: this enables us to quantify the observational biases due to PSF blurring and magnitude effects and correct the measurements as a function of magnitude, galaxy size, Sersic index (concentration for the analysis of the non-parametric measurements) and ellipticity. We present the largest structural catalogue to date: we find that accurate and complete measurements for all the structural parameters are typically obtained for galaxies with SExtractor MAG AUTO I < 21. Indeed, the parameters in the filters i and r can be overall well recovered up to MAG AUTO < 21.5, corresponding to a fitting completeness of ~90% below this threshold, for a total of 25 million galaxies. The combination of parametric and non-parametric structural measurements makes this catalogue an important instrument to explore and understand how galaxies form and evolve. We present a relationship between the black hole mass, stellar mass, and star formation rate of a diverse group of 91 galaxies with dynamically-measured black hole masses. For our sample of galaxies with a variety of morphologies and other galactic properties, we find that the specific star formation rate is a smoothly decreasing function of the ratio between black hole mass and stellar mass, or what we call the specific black hole mass. In order to explain this relation, we propose a physical framework where the gradual suppression of a galaxy's star formation activity results from the adjustment to an increase in specific black hole mass and, accordingly, an increase in the amount of heating. From this framework, it follows that at least some galaxies with intermediate specific black hole masses are in a steady state of partial quiescence with intermediate specific star formation rates, implying that both transitioning and steady-state galaxies live within this region known as the "green valley." With respect to galaxy formation models, our results present an important diagnostic with which to test various prescriptions of black hole feedback and its effects on star formation activity., 15 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Roughly half of all stars reside in galaxies without significant ongoing star formation. However, galaxy formation models indicate that it is energetically challenging to suppress the cooling of gas and the formation of stars in galaxies that lie at the centers of their dark matter halos. In this Letter, we show that the dependence of quiescence on black hole and stellar mass is a powerful discriminant between differing models for the mechanisms that suppress star formation. Using observations of 91 star-forming and quiescent central galaxies with directly measured black hole masses, we find that quiescent galaxies host more massive black holes than star-forming galaxies with similar stellar masses. This observational result is in qualitative agreement with models that assume that effective, more-or-less continuous active galactic nucleus feedback suppresses star formation, strongly suggesting the importance of the black hole in producing quiescence in central galaxies.

Introduction.Silent spontaneous rupture of the uterus before term, with extrusion of an intact amniotic sac and delivery of a healthy neonate, with no maternal or neonatal morbidity or mortality is very rare. Very few cases have been reported in literature.Case Presentation.We report a case of silent spontaneous uterine rupture, found during a scheduled repeat cesarean section at 36 weeks of gestation. Patient had history of two prior classical cesarean sections. She underwent cesarean section, with delivery of a healthy male infant. She had a good postoperative recovery and was discharged on postoperative day 3.Conclusion.Silent spontaneous rupture of the uterus before term with extrusion of an intact amniotic sac is rare. A high index of suspicion and good imaging during pregnancy are important in making this diagnosis.

Patients with spontaneous rupture of membranes before cesarean section, chorioamnionitis, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, and immunosuppressive disorders were excluded. Postpartum endomyometritis rates were compared across groups as the primary outcome in an intention-to-treat analysis. We also examined a number of secondary outcomes. To detect a 20% difference in infection rate between the cleaned and the non-cleaned groups (two-tailed [α]=0.05, [β]=0.2), 103 women were required per group. From June 2014 through July 2015, 312 women were screened and 206 were randomized as follows: 103 to intrauterine cleaning and 103 to omission of cleaning after placental delivery. Most characteristics were similar among groups. There were no statistically significant differences in the rate of endomyometritis between the two groups (2.0% vs 2.9%, RR 0.60; 95% CI 0.40-1.32). There were no statistically significant differences in postpartum hemorrhage rates (5.8% vs 7.7%, RR 0.75; 95% CI 0.6-1.2), hospital readmission rates (2.9% vs 3.8%, RR 0.75; 95% CI 0.5-1.6), mean surgical time, hospital length of stay, time to return of gastrointestinal function, need for repeat surgery, or quantitated blood loss between the two groups. Our randomized controlled trial provides evidence suggesting that omission of intrauterine cleaning during cesarean deliveries in women at low risk of infection does not increase intraoperative or postoperative complications.
