In this work, two novel donor/acceptor (D/A) complexes, namely, diindenoperylene (DIP)/1,3,4,5,7,8-hexafluoro-tetracyanonaphthoquinodimethane (F6TCNNQ) and alpha-sexithiophene (6T)/F6TCNNQ, are studied. The D/A complexes segregate in form of π–π stacked D/A cocrystals and can be observed by X-ray scattering. The different conformational degrees of freedom of the donor molecules, respectively, seem to affect the thin-film crystalline texture and composition of the D/A mixtures significantly. In equimolar mixtures, for DIP/F6TCNNQ, the crystallites are mostly uniaxially oriented and homogeneous, whereas for 6T/F6TCNNQ, a mostly 3D (isotropic) orientation of the crystallites and coexistence of domains of pristine compounds and D/A complex, respectively, are observed. We report on the growth and characterization of molecular mixed thin films of α-sexithiophene (6T), a well-known organic p-type semiconductor with high hole mobility, together with its perfluorinated counterpart, the so far rarely studied tetradecafluoro-α-sexithiophene (PF6T). Pure and blended thin films of these two molecules with different mixing ratios were grown on silicon oxide in ultrahigh vacuum by coevaporation. The effect of perfluorination and mixing on crystal structure, morphology, electronic, and optical properties was examined. The evolution of the PF6T crystal structure was followed in situ in real time by X-ray scattering. We found a new thin film structure different from the reported bulk phase with molecules either standing-up or lying-down depending on the growth temperature. The different morphologies of pure films and blends were investigated with atomic force microscopy. The impact of mixing on the core-levels and on the highest occupied molecular orbitals of 6T and PF6T is discussed.

In order to investigate the effects of intermolecular interactions on the optical properties of organic semiconductors, we employ mixing of the organic semiconductor perfluoropentacene (PFP; C22F14) with the wide band-gap organic semiconductor picene (PIC; C22H14). The binary mixed thin films are prepared by simultaneous coevaporation of PIC and PFP in vacuum. We determine the optical properties of the blends by differential reflectance spectroscopy (absorption) and photoluminescence (emission). PFP:PIC thin films are a rare case of mixed thin films with a known molecular packing. The formation of equimolar mixed domains with a crystal structure clearly different from that of the pure compounds is, in the case of nonequimolar blends, accompanied by pure domains of the excess compound. Due to the wide band gap of PIC, the effect of reduced intermolecular interactions between PFP molecules can be studied in detail without any direct contributions of PIC to the spectra. We find a strongly enhanced emission from PFP in the mixed thin films, which can be explained by decoupling. Real-time investigations of the absorption spectra during growth provide further insight into intermolecular coupling effects on optical properties.

Singlet fission, the spin-allowed photophysical process converting an excited singlet state into two triplet states, has attracted significant attention for device applications. Research so far has focused mainly on the understanding of singlet fission in pure materials, yet blends offer the promise of a controlled tuning of intermolecular interactions, impacting singlet fission efficiencies. Here we report a study of singlet fission in mixtures of pentacene with weakly interacting spacer molecules. Comparison of experimentally determined stationary optical properties and theoretical calculations indicates a reduction of charge-transfer interactions between pentacene molecules with increasing spacer molecule fraction. Theory predicts that the reduced interactions slow down singlet fission in these blends, but surprisingly we find that singlet fission occurs on a timescale comparable to that in pure crystalline pentacene. We explain the observed robustness of singlet fission in such mixed films by a mechanism of exciton diffusion to hot spots with closer intermolecular spacings., Singlet fission is desirable for highly efficient solar cells, yet the details of the process remain elusive. Here, Broch et al. show that the changes in bulk intermolecular interactions can have little effect on the singlet fission rate in a mixture of pentacene and weakly interacting spacer molecules.

The structure and morphology of mixed thin films of picene (C22H14, PIC) and perfluoropentacene (C22F14, PFP) as well as mixed thin films of PIC and pentacene (C22H14, PEN) grown by simultaneous coevaporation is investigated using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. For both systems we find mixing on the molecular level and the formation of mixed structures. However, due to the strongly different interactions in both mixtures the ordering is fundamentally different. For the equimolar PFP:PIC mixtures, we observe the formation of two different mixed polymorphs with unit cells containing 2 PIC and 2 PFP molecules depending on the growth temperature. One of these polymorphs is a superlattice with in-plane compound segregation. The other polymorph is less symmetric and results only in a very short ranged in-plane ordering. Small-molecule organic photovoltaic cells often employ a planar heterojunction (PHJ) geometry where the electron donor and acceptor materials are stacked one on top of the other. The thin-film growth scenario of such PHJs can be very different from the one of a single compound on a bare substrate. We have investigated the growth of PHJs, consisting of two different donor–acceptor pairs, namely, α-sexithiophene (6T)/C60 and 6T/diindenoperylene (DIP) using real-time in situ X-ray scattering. For both donor–acceptor material combinations, we observe that the coherent in-plane crystalline size of the second material strongly correlates with the one of the bottom one, and hence a strong templating effect of the 6T on the material deposited subsequently, indicating a strong interaction between the two materials in the PHJ. We present an extensive structural analysis of hybrid architectures prepared by the “soft” incorporation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within an organic semiconductor matrix of diindenoperylene (DIP). Such “soft” or noninvasive deposition of nanoparticles within organic semiconducting host matrices not only minimizes the influence of the deposition process on the order and properties of the organic host molecules, but also offers additional control in the process of incorporation. The hybrid structures were characterized by X-ray scattering techniques including grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), X-ray reflectivity (XRR), and complemented by atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. We show that different strategies of incorporating the nanoparticles in the host matrix lead to drastically different structure and morphologies. Particularly remarkable is the morphological change observed in the matrix of DIP as well as the AuNPs due to the influence of organic solvents, as evidenced by TEM tomography measurements, which revealed the exact location of the AuNPs within the organic host. It is also demonstrated that AuNPs can be successfully used as tunable templates for the growth of the organic semiconductors with desired island sizes and distances.

We investigated the growth of the two phase-separating materials diindenoperylene (DIP) and buckminsterfullerene C60 with different mixing ratio in real-time and in situ by X-ray scattering experiments. We found that at room temperature, mixtures with an excess of DIP show a growth mode which is very close to the perfect layer-by-layer limit with DIP crystallites forming over the entire film thickness. An unexpected increase in the island size is observed for these mixtures as a function of film thickness. On the other hand, equimolar and C60 dominated mixtures grow with poor crystallinity but form very smooth films. Additionally, it is observed that higher substrate temperatures lead to an increase in the length scale of phase separation with film thickness.

Binary mixed thin films of picene (C22H14, PIC) and pentacene (C22H14, PEN) consist of crystallites with a statistical occupation of the lattice sites by either PEN or PIC and unit cell parameters continuously changing with the mixing ratio. For high PIC ratios a PIC phase forms which corresponds to a limited intermixing of the two compounds. The growth behavior of these mixtures is investigated in situ and in realtime using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. We observe a delayed phase separation in PIC-rich blends, i.e. complete intermixing in the monolayer range and the nucleation of a pure PIC-phase in addition to the intermixed phase starting from the second monolayer.
