Abstract

AN INTERIM REPORT OF A 3-YEAR LONGITUDINAL STUDY COMPARING INDIVIDUALIZED AND BASAL READING PROGRAMS AT THE PRIMARY LEVEL BY THE LAKESHORE WISCONSIN CURRICULUM STUDY COUNCIL IS PRESENTED. DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO MATERIALS, PROCEDURES, GROUPING, AND SEQUENCE AS INTEGRAL PARTS OF THE READING PROGRAM WERE EXAMINED. INDIVIDUALIZED READING WAS DEFINED TO INCLUDE MATERIAL SELECTED BY STUDENTS WITH TEACHER GUIDANCE, TEACHER-PUPIL CONFERENCE AS THE INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE, FLEXIBLE GROUPING, AND NONSEQUENTIAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT. IN THE BASAL APPROACH, MATERIAL WAS PRESELECTED, AND GROUP INSTRUCTION WAS PROVIDED. SKILLS WERE DEVELOPED SEQUENTIALLY. FOURTEEN FIRST-GRADE EXPERIMENTAL AND 14 FIRST-GRADE CONTROL CLASSROOMS PARTICIPATED ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS. CONTINUOUS INSERVICE TRAINING WAS CONDUCTED. Abstract

The detailed guide's purpose is to assist educators and community leaders in designing and implementing educational programs to serve student and community needs, and to identify the goals and elements of cooperative vocational education. One chapter describes the necessary characteristics of the teacher-coordinator in such programs, and the advantages of cooperative vocational education to the community and to the students. Two other chapters suggest methods for determining employers' and students' needs for cooperative vocational education and suggest plans for meeting these needs. Three chapters deal with implementing plans for: public relations (including a suggested eight point plan and the use of media); instruction in the school (including five teaching methods and the use of youth organizations); and community laboratories (including criteria for selecting, establishing, and evaluating training stations, and guidelines for complying with appropriate laws). Another chapter analyzes essential elements of the cooperative program including staffing; facilities, equipment, and materials; and program development. A final chapter suggests ways of improving cooperative vocational education in its administrative structure, professional development of teacher-coordinators, instructional materials, and program evaluation. A 70-page appendix displays forms appropriate to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs. (JR)

4. California's English Learners and Their Long-Term Learning Outcomes. Brief

Abstract

California's K-12 funding and instructional policies for English learners (ELs) have changed significantly over the past 2 decades, including new requirements for instructional materials specific to ELs statewide and a new school funding system that funds ELs at a higher rate. These major policy shifts held the potential to change student learning outcome patterns for ELs. This brief summarizes those policy changes and, as a first step in identifying their impact, describes changes over time in the development of academic skills and English proficiency among ELs in California. We find that English learners' academic achievement by 3rd grade has improved over time, shrinking the achievement gaps between K-cohort ELs and other students in English language arts (ELA) and math. We also find that more-recent cohorts of kindergarten ELs are reaching English proficiency on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) in earlier grades than previous cohorts did. For the less recent cohorts who had reached Grade 5 by 2018-19, we find almost no change in the overall share who were proficient in English by the end of elementary school. We also find only half of kindergarten ELs were reclassified as English proficient by the end of elementary school in 2018-19.

Abstract

The first generation of transiting planet searches in globular clusters yielded no detections, and in hindsight, only placed occurrence rate limits slightly higher than the measured occurrence rate in the higher-metallicity Galactic thick disk. To improve these limits, we present the first results of a new wide field search for transiting hot Jupiters in the globular cluster 47~Tucanae. We have observed 47~Tuc as part of the Multiband Imaging Survey for High-Alpha Planets (MISHAPS). Using 24 partial and full nights of observations taken with the Dark Energy Camera on the 4-m Blanco telescope at CTIO, we perform a search on 19,930 stars in the outer regions of the cluster. Though we find no clear planet detections, by combining our result with the upper limit enabled by Gilliland et al.'s 2000 Hubble search for planets around an independent sample of 34,091 stars in the inner cluster, we place the strongest limit to date on hot Jupiters with periods of $0.8 \leq P \leq 8.3$ days and $0.5~R_{\rm Jup} \leq R_{\rm P} \leq 2.0~R_{\rm Jup}$ of $f_{\rm HJ} < 0.11\%$, a factor of ${\sim}$4 below the occurrence rate in the \textit{Kepler} field. Our search found 35 transiting planet candidates, though we are ultimately able to rule out each without follow-up observations. 6. Could Minimum Grading Enhance High School Graduation Rates and Cost-Effectiveness across Arkansas?

Abstract

High school graduation is a pivotal milestone that can shape students' future, offering them opportunities for higher education and gainful employment. Because research shows grade point averages and course failures to be predictive of high school graduation, it is important for students' life outcomes that their teachers assign them equitable grades. However, recent research has scrutinized how schools have traditionally graded students, calling for new approaches such as minimum grading. In this analysis, we simulate the economic impacts of implementing a minimum grading policy statewide during the ninth-grade year of the cohort of students who were in ninth grade in 2015-16 in Arkansas. On average, in Arkansas public schools, we estimate that minimum grading would affect about one (narrow bound) to 3%(broad bound) of students, increase cost-effectiveness by 6% (narrow bound) to 23% (broad bound), largely varying across districts, and have essentially no impact on the return on investment. The application of minimum grading shifted 1% of failing course grades to passing, thereby positioning 10% of previously failing students to pass. These findings suggest that minimum grading could serve as a cost-effective strategy to enhance graduation rates in districts with higher rates of affected students, without necessitating additional educational spending.

7. A Course Marking Roadmap: Recommendations to Guide the Development and Implementation of Open and Affordable Course Marking for the Benefit of Students, Faculty, and Institutions

Abstract

Open educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning, or research resources that are offered freely to users in at least one form and that either reside in the public domain or have been released under an open copyright license that allows for its free use, reuse, modification, and sharing with attribution. Course marking (also called attributes, designations, tags, flags, labels) are specific, searchable attributes or designations that are applied to courses, allowing students to quickly identify important information to aid in their decision making and allow them to efficiently plan their academic careers. In 2022, the report, "Toward Convergence: Creating Clarity to Drive More Consistency in Understanding the Benefits and Costs of OER," introduced a set of principles and frameworks that provide guidance for states, systems, and institutions wanting to better understand the benefits of open educational resources (OER). MHEC led the national effort to produce the report, which details recommendations for consistently estimating the cost savings realized by students when a course uses OER compared to traditional course material. Realizing such analyses are not possible without accurate data on course materials, MHEC then led a national effort to create this report to highlight five steps critical for the development of an effective course marking process, providing committed stakeholders with a roadmap and set of recommendations to improve consistency and reliability for marking courses in college registration materials, so students know the costs and nature of such materials at the time they choose their classes. Consistency of course marking efforts across the United States contributes to the ability to aggregate data from many institutions and conduct studies of how OER saves students money and contributes to enhanced student outcomes.

9. Mitigating the Academic Impacts of Proximity to Homicide: The Role of Schools. Research Report

Abstract

Students, families, and communities across Chicago are affected by gun violence, but the levels and experiences differ greatly by location and by the racial composition of communities. In Chicago, recent rates of violence rose sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then declined to pre-pandemic levels in 2022. Still, there were more than 4,000 gun-related injuries reported to the Chicago Police Department in 2020 and in 2021, and homicides in the city rose in tandem. While overall rates of violence have fallen from peaks in the late 1990s in predominantly White and Latinx communities, rates of violence in Chicago's predominantly Black communities have exceeded 1990s levels in recent years. Of the 725 homicides reported in Chicago in 2022, 541 victims were Black, more than 18 times as many as were White. Proximity to violence and homicide remain profoundly racialized in Chicago. This mixed-methods study explores four interconnected research questions, specifically examining the particular role schools may play in the lives of students living in proximity to violence in Chicago: (1) What is the extent, distribution, and impact of living in close geographical proximity to violence on CPS students' performance in schools? (2) To what extent is there evidence that CPS schools can insulate or protect students from the negative consequences on academic and behavioral outcomes of living in close proximity to violence, so as to support students' health and wellness? (3) What elements of school climate and organization are characteristic of schools that appear to protect students against the negative impacts of proximity to violence on academic and behavioral outcomes? and (4) How do adults working in schools that insulate students from the impact of living in close proximity to violence understand and describe their work?

10. Removing Police Officers from Chicago Schools: Trends and Outcomes. Research Brief

Abstract

National context: Schools across the United States have long grappled with the role and impact of school-based police officers, often referred to as school resource officers (SROs). Proponents for school-based policing believe that SROs contribute to school safety by preventing or addressing crime and violence in schools. Opponents of SROs in schools argue that the presence of SROs criminalizes students and increases the likelihood of school-based arrest, particularly for students of color. Policies around SROs vary in districts across the country. Chicago context: In the wake of George Floyd's murder in 2020, the Chicago Board of Education (CBOE) asked the district to develop a plan to phase-out the SRO program, which assigned two SROs to most Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high schools. In February 2024, the CBOE voted to remove all remaining SROs from schools starting in 2024-25. In May 2024, CPS proposed a Whole School Safety Policy that did not include SROs and focused on supports for physical safety, emotional safety, and relational trust in schools. The research: This brief examines what happened when Chicago Public Schools (CPS) began the process of removing School Resource Officers (SROs) from its high schools during the 2020-21 school year. These findings can inform conversations in Chicago, and across the country, about SROs and whole school safety practices and policies--while recognizing that questions about the presence of police and the experience of safety in schools are complex and reflect differences in lived experiences and perspectives across policymakers, practitioners, young people, families, and communities. The findings are part of a larger, ongoing study by researchers from the UChicago Consortium; University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; and Lurie Children's Hospital's Center for Childhood Resilience. 11. Appropriate Identification of Children with Disabilities for Idea Services: A Report from Recent National Estimates. NCEE 2024-004r

Abstract

Appropriately identifying children with disabilities--in ways that are timely, comprehensive, and accurate--is critical for ensuring that learners receive the supports they need to meet early milestones and succeed in school. In turn, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) charges states and school districts with: (1) finding all children, birth through age 21, suspected of having a disability; (2) evaluating them to determine if they are eligible for IDEA services; and (3) measuring and addressing racial or ethnic disparities in who is identified. Since IDEA's reauthorization in 2004, there is greater access to data and more sophisticated approaches to screen for and detect certain disabilities, an increasingly diverse child population, and new regulations on how to measure disparities in identification. This report examines how state and district practices during the 2019-2020 school year aligned with IDEA's goals of appropriate identification.

13. Using ChatGPT with Novice Arduino Programmers: Effects on Performance, Interest, Self-Efficacy, and Programming Ability

Abstract

A posttest-only control group experimental design compared novice Arduino programmers who developed their own programs (self-programming group, n = 17) with novice Arduino programmers who used ChatGPT 3.5 to write their programs (ChatGPT-programming group, n = 16) on the dependent variables of programming scores, interest in Arduino programming, Arduino programming self-efficacy, Arduino programming posttest scores, and types of programming errors. Students were undergraduates in an introductory agricultural systems technology course in Fall 2023. The results indicated no significant (p < 0.10) differences between groups for programming rubric scores (p = 0.50) or interest in Arduino programming (p = 0.50). There were significant differences for Arduino programming self-efficacy, (p = 0.03, Cohen's d = 0.75) and Arduino posttest scores, (p = 0.03, Cohen's d = 0.76); students in the self-programming group scored significantly higher on both measures. Analysis of students' errors indicated the ChatGPT group made significantly (p < 0.01) more program punctuation errors. These results indicated novice students writing their own programs developed greater Arduino programming self-efficacy and programming ability than novice students using ChatGPT. Nevertheless, ChatGPT may still play an important role in assisting novices to write microcontroller programs.

14. Toward Better Outcome Measurement for Insomnia in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

This report presents a new parent-rated outcome measure of insomnia for children with autism spectrum disorder. Parents of 1185 children with autism spectrum disorder (aged 3-12; 80.3% male) completed the first draft of the measure online. Factor and item response theory analyses reduced the set of 40 items to the final 21-item Pediatric Insomnia Autism Rating Scale. In this online sample, Pediatric Insomnia Autism Rating Scale mean was 21.8 ± 15.0 (range 0-63; coefficient alpha = 0.94). Item response theory results indicated excellent reliability across a range of scores. Next, we conducted a telehealth assessment of 134 children with autism spectrum disorder (aged 3-12; 73% male). In this clinical sample, Pediatric Insomnia Autism Rating Scale mean was 28.9 + 14.62 (range 0-61; coefficient alpha = 0.93). Pearson correlations of Pediatric Insomnia Autism Rating Scale with the PROMIS Sleep Disturbance and the modified Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire was 0.74 for each. This was significantly higher than correlations of parent-rated disruptive behavior, hyperactivity, repetitive behavior, and anxiety measures (range 0.29-0.59)--supporting convergent and divergent validity. Parents of 63 children completed the Pediatric Insomnia Autism Rating Scale three times over 4 weeks. Intraclass correlation was excellent (0.88) over three time points. Pediatric Insomnia Autism Rating Scale is a valid dimensional measure of insomnia in autistic children that produces reliable scores.

15. Glycosyl hydrolase 11 (xynA) gene with xylanase activity from thermophilic bacteria isolated from thermal springs

Abstract

Abstract Background Hemicellulose is one of the copious polymer in lignocellulosic biomass (LCB). It is primarily composed of xylan linked by β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. Xylanase preferentially cleaves the β-1,4-glycosidic bonds in the xylan backbone resulting in complete hydrolysis of the biomass. Thermostable variants of glycoside hydrolases act as robust catalysts, not only in degradation but also during processing, to obtain specific carbohydrate-containing chemicals and materials (Ramasamy et al. in Madras Agric J 107(special):1. https://doi.org/10.29321/MAJ.2020.000382 , 2020). Results The xylanase production by two thermophilic bacteria isolated from thermal springs was evaluated. In addition, the gene encoding this industrially vital enzyme was isolated and characterized, and its protein structure was analyzed. The thermophilic bacteria producing xylanases were isolated from augmented sawdust and banana fiber biomass from hot springs of Himachal Pradesh and identified as Bacillus subtilis VSDB5 and Bacillus licheniformis KBFB4 using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The persistent xylanase activity revealed that the enzyme is secreted extracellularly with the maximum activity of 0.76 IU mL−1 and 1.0 IU mL−1 at 6 h and 12 h of growth by KBFB4 and VSDB5, respectively, under submerged fermentation. Both the strains exhibited the maximum activity at pH 6 and a temperature of 50 °C. The xylanases of KBFB4 and VSDB5 were thermostable and retained 40% of their activity at 60 °C after incubation for 30 min. Xylanase of VSDB5 had wide thermotolerance and retained 20% of its activity from 60 to 80 °C, whereas xylanase of KBFB4 showed wide alkali tolerance and retained 80% of its activity until pH 10. The xylanase (xynA)-encoding gene (650 bp) cloned from both the strains using specific primers showed 98 to 99% homology to β-1,4-endoxylanase gene. Further in silico analysis predicted that the xylanase protein, with a molecular weight of 23 kDa, had a high pI (9.44–9.65), which explained the alkaline nature of the enzyme and greater aliphatic index (56.29). This finding suggested that the protein is thermostable. Multiple sequence alignment and homology modeling of the protein sequence revealed that the gene product belonged to the GH11 family, indicating its possible application in bioconversion. Conclusion The strains B. subtilis VSDB5 and B. licheniformis KBFB4 obtained from hot springs of Himachal Pradesh produced potent and alkali-tolerant thermostable xylanases, which belong to the GH11 family. The enzyme can be supplemented in industrial applications for biomass conversion at high temperatures and pH (or in processes involving alkali treatment). Graphical Abstract

Abstract

This study undertakes a comprehensive assessment of selected mariculture enterprises in the coastal regions of India, centered on long-term sustainability as the key focus. This is juxtaposed against India's ambitious blue economy targets and policy thrust that pin on the expansion of mariculture as a promising avenue for enhancing marine fish production. Farm-level, region-specific, techno-economic, and socio-cultural factors associated with, and conditional on, sustainable intensification of mariculture-based production systems are examined in detail. The Principles-Criteria-Indicators (PCI) approach is used to establish the linkage between identified farm-level indicators and various dimensions of sustainability. While the selected enterprises were assessed to be technically and economically viable in general, glaring gaps were evident on key indicators of sustainability such as the legitimacy of access over water bodies, use of quality seed and feed, institutional credit access, market access, and fair marketing practices, optimal stocking density, mechanization, use of renewable energy, adoption of environmental-friendly culture practices, farm surveillance, crew safety, and social protection. This indicates the need for taking proactive measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of mariculture, particularly in the initial stages of establishment when such interventions are easy to adopt. Based on the insights obtained from the analysis, a broad set of strategies, policy options, and institutional interventions critical to scaling-up coastal mariculture enterprises along the east and west coasts of India are presented.

Abstract

Assuming Galactic cosmic rays originate in supernovae and the winds of massive stars, starburst galaxies should produce very-high-energy (VHE; E$>$100 GeV) gamma-ray emission via the interaction of their copious quantities of cosmic rays with the large reservoirs of dense gas within the galaxies. Such VHE emission was detected by VERITAS from the starburst galaxy M 82 in 2008-09. An extensive, multi-year campaign followed these initial observations, yielding a total of 254 h of good quality VERITAS data on M 82. Leveraging modern analysis techniques and the larger exposure, these VERITAS data show a more statistically significant VHE signal ($\sim$6.5 standard deviations ($\sigma$)). The corresponding photon spectrum is well fit by a power law ($\Gamma = 2.3 \pm 0.3_{stat} \pm0.2_{sys}$) and the observed integral flux is F($>$450 GeV) = $(3.2 \pm0.6_{stat} \pm 0.6_{sys}) \times 10^{-13}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}~s}^{-1}$, or $\sim$0.4\% of the Crab Nebula flux above the same energy threshold. The improved VERITAS measurements, when combined with various multi-wavelength data, enable modeling of the underlying emission and transport processes. A purely leptonic scenario is found to be a poor representation of the gamma-ray spectral energy distribution (SED). A lepto-hadronic scenario with cosmic rays following a power-law spectrum in momentum (index $s\simeq 2.25$), and with significant bremsstrahlung below $1$~GeV, provides a good match to the observed SED. The synchrotron emission from the secondary electrons indicates that efficient non-radiative losses of cosmic-ray electrons may be related to advective escape from the starburst core., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures; Accepted for the publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Abstract

Many active galaxies harbor powerful relativistic jets, however, the detailed mechanisms of their formation and acceleration remain poorly understood. To investigate the area of jet acceleration and collimation with the highest available angular resolution, we study the innermost region of the bipolar jet in the nearby low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxy NGC 1052. We combined observations of NGC 1052 taken with VLBA, GMVA, and EHT over one week in the spring of 2017. For the first time, NGC 1052 was detected with the EHT, providing a size of the central region in-between both jet bases of 250 RS (Schwarzschild radii) perpendicular to the jet axes. This size estimate supports previous studies of the jets expansion profile which suggest two breaks of the profile at around 300 RS and 10000 RS distances to the core. Furthermore, we estimated the magnetic field to be 1.25 Gauss at a distance of 22 {\mu}as from the central engine by fitting a synchrotron-self absorption spectrum to the innermost emission feature, which shows a spectral turn-over at about 130 GHz. Assuming a purely poloidal magnetic field, this implies an upper limit on the magnetic field strength at the event horizon of 26000 Gauss, which is consistent with previous measurements. The complex, low-brightness, double-sided jet structure in NGC 1052 makes it a challenge to detect the source at millimeter (mm) wavelengths. However, our first EHT observations have demonstrated that detection is possible up to at least 230 GHz. This study offers a glimpse through the dense surrounding torus and into the innermost central region, where the jets are formed. Abstract

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) survey experiment that currently consists of three 0.42m small-aperture telescopes (SATs) and one 6m large-aperture telescope (LAT), located at an elevation of 5200m in the Atacama Desert in Chile. At the LAT's focal plane, SO will install >62,000 transition-edge sensor detectors across 13 optics tubes (OTs) within the Large Aperture Telescope Receiver (LATR), the largest cryogenic camera ever built to observe the CMB. Here we report on the validation of the LATR in the laboratory and the subsequent dark testing and validation within the LAT. We show that the LATR meets cryogenic, optical, and detector specifications required for high-sensitivity measurements of the CMB. At the time of writing, the LATR is installed in the LAT with six OTs (corresponding to >31,000 detectors), and the LAT mirrors and remaining seven OTs are undergoing development.

Abstract

We introduce a novel framework for design and optimization of 3D freeform metalenses that attains nearly linear scaling of computational cost with diameter, by breaking the lens into a sequence of radial ``zones'' with $n$-fold discrete axisymmetry, where $n$ increases with radius. This allows vastly more design freedom than imposing continuous axisymmetry, while avoiding the compromises of the locally periodic approximation (LPA) or scalar diffraction theory. Using a GPU-accelerated finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) solver in cylindrical coordinates, we perform full-wave simulation and topology optimization within each supra-wavelength zone. We validate our approach by designing millimeter and centimeter-scale, poly-achromatic, 3D freeform metalenses which outperform the state of the art. By demonstrating the scalability and resulting optical performance enabled by our ``zoned discrete axisymmetry'' (ZDA) and supra-wavelength domain decomposition, we highlight the potential of our framework to advance large-scale meta-optics and next-generation photonic technologies., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Our interpretation of terrestrial exoplanet atmospheric spectra will always be limited by the accuracy of the data we use as input in our forward and retrieval models. Ultraviolet molecular absorption cross sections are one category of these essential model inputs; however, they are often poorly characterized at the longest wavelengths relevant to photo-dissociation. Photolysis reactions dominate the chemical kinetics of temperate terrestrial planet atmospheres. One molecule of particular importance is CO$_2$, which is likely present in all terrestrial planet atmospheres. The photolysis of CO$_2$ can introduce CO and O, as well as shield tropospheric water vapor from undergoing photolysis. This is important because H$_2$O photolysis produces OH, which serves as a major reactive sink to many atmospheric trace gases. Here, we construct CO$_2$ cross-section prescriptions at 195K and 300K extrapolated beyond 200 nm from measured cross sections. We compare results from the implementation of these new cross sections to the most commonly used CO$_2$ prescriptions for temperate, terrestrial planets with Archean-like atmospheres. We generally find that the observational consequences of CO$_2$ dissociation beyond 200 nm is minimal so long as our least conservative (highest opacity) prescription can be ruled out. Moreover, implementing our recommended extended CO$_2$ cross sections does not substantially alter previous results showing the consequential photochemical impact of extended H$_2$O cross sections., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, 3 tables. Abstract

Seniority-zero wavefunctions describe bond-breaking processes qualitatively. As eigenvectors of a model Hamiltonian, Richardson-Gaudin states provide a clear physical picture and allow for systematic improvement via standard single reference approaches. Until now, this treatment has been done in the seniority-zero channel. In this manuscript, the corresponding states with higher seniorities are identified, and their couplings through the Coulomb Hamiltonian are computed. In every case, the couplings between the states are computed from the cofactors of their effective overlap matrix. Proof of principle calculations demonstrate that a single reference configuration interaction is comparable with seniority-based configuration interaction computations at a substantially reduced cost. The next manuscript in this series will identify the corresponding Slater-Condon rules and make the computations feasible.

Abstract

Data-centric technologies provide exciting opportunities, but recent research has shown how lack of representation in datasets, often as a result of systemic inequities and socioeconomic disparities, can produce inequitable outcomes that can exclude or harm certain demographics. In this paper, we discuss preliminary insights from an ongoing effort aimed at better understanding barriers to equitable data-centric innovation. We report findings from a survey of 261 technologists and researchers who use data in their work regarding their experiences seeking adequate, representative datasets. Our findings suggest that age and identity play a significant role in the seeking and selection of representative datasets, warranting further investigation into these aspects of data-centric research and development.

Abstract

The time-variable emission from the accretion flow of Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center, has long been examined in the radio-to-mm, near-infrared (NIR), and X-ray regimes of the electromagnetic spectrum. However, until now, sensitivity and angular resolution have been insufficient in the crucial mid-infrared (MIR) regime. The MIRI instrument on JWST has changed that, and we report the first MIR detection of Sgr A*. The detection was during a flare that lasted about 40 minutes, a duration similar to NIR and X-ray flares, and the source's spectral index steepened as the flare ended. The steepening suggests synchrotron cooling is an important process for Sgr A*'s variability and implies magnetic field strengths $\sim$40--70 Gauss in the emission zone. Observations at $1.3~\mathrm{mm}$ with the Submillimeter Array revealed a counterpart flare lagging the MIR flare by $\approx$10 minutes. The observations can be self-consistently explained as synchrotron radiation from a single population of gradually cooling high-energy electrons accelerated through (a combination of) magnetic reconnection and/or magnetized turbulence., Comment: Accepted for publication ApJL

Abstract

Accurate RF propagation modeling in urban environments is critical for developing digital spectrum twins and optimizing wireless communication systems. We introduce OpenGERT, an open-source automated Geometry Extraction tool for Ray Tracing, which collects and processes terrain and building data from OpenStreetMap, Microsoft Global ML Building Footprints, and USGS elevation data. Using the Blender Python API, it creates detailed urban models for high-fidelity simulations with NVIDIA Sionna RT. We perform sensitivity analyses to examine how variations in building height, position, and electromagnetic material properties affect ray-tracing accuracy. Specifically, we present pairwise dispersion plots of channel statistics (path gain, mean excess delay, delay spread, link outage, and Rician K-factor) and investigate how their sensitivities change with distance from transmitters. We also visualize the variance of these statistics for selected transmitter locations to gain deeper insights. Our study covers Munich and Etoile scenes, each with 10 transmitter locations. For each location, we apply five types of perturbations: material, position, height, height-position, and all combined, with 50 perturbations each. Results show that small changes in permittivity and conductivity minimally affect channel statistics, whereas variations in building height and position significantly alter all statistics, even with noise standard deviations of 1 meter in height and 0.4 meters in position. These findings highlight the importance of precise environmental modeling for accurate propagation predictions, essential for digital spectrum twins and advanced communication networks. Abstract

A study is presented of $B^+ \to K^0_{\rm S} K^- \pi^+ K^-$ and $B^+ \to K^0_{\rm S} K^+ \pi^- K^+$ decays based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9 fb^{-1}$. The $K^0_{\rm S} K \pi$ invariant-mass distributions of both $B^+$ decay modes show, in the $m(K^0_{\rm S} K \pi)<1.85$ GeV mass region, a rich spectrum of light-meson resonances, resolved using an amplitude analysis. A complex mixture of $J^{PC}=0^{-+}, 1^{++}$ and $1^{+-}$ resonances is observed, dominated by $\eta(1405)$, $\eta(1470)$, $\eta(1760)$, $f_1(1285)$, $f_1(1420)$ and $h_1(1405)$ resonances. The $K^0_{\rm S} K \pi$ Dalitz plots are dominated by asymmetric crossing $K^* \bar K$ bands which are different for the two $B^+$ decay modes. This is due to a different interference pattern between the $1^{++}$ and $1^{+-}$ amplitudes in the two channels. Abstract

The next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) is intended to be the premier centimeter-wavelength facility for astronomy and astrophysics, building on the substantial scientific legacies of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The ngVLA would open a new window on the Universe through ultra-sensitive imaging of thermal line and continuum emission to milliarcsecond resolution, while delivering unprecedented broad-band continuum imaging and polarimetry of non-thermal emission. The ngVLA would provide a critical electromagnetic complement to a suite of particle detectors and gravitational-wave observatories, as well as space- and ground-based telescopes operating from infrared to gamma-ray wavelengths, hence enabling multi-messenger and multi-band astronomy and astrophysics. Current construction plans call for the ngVLA to leverage some of the physical infrastructure of both the VLA and the VLBA, potentially drawing on overlapping personnel and information infrastructure. Multiple options can be envisioned for a VLA+VLBA to ngVLA transition. In order to assess risks and benefits of possible transition plans, the ngVLA project established the VLA+VLBA to ngVLA Transition Advisory Group (TAG). The primary deliverable from the TAG is a ``VLA+VLBA to ngVLA Transition Option Concepts'' report (this report) that includes a prioritized list of transition options., Comment: This report reflects an initial set of recommendations by the Transition Advisory Group for the ngVLA Project and is distributed for the purposes of obtaining community comment. Abstract

We present a catalog of individual stellar and dust extinction properties along close to 500,000 sight lines in the southwest bar of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The catalog is based on multiband Hubble Space Telescope photometric data spanning near-ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths from the Small Magellanic Cloud Investigation of Dust and Gas Evolution survey (SMIDGE) covering a 100 x 200 pc area. We use the probabilistic technique of the Bayesian Extinction And Stellar Tool (BEAST) to model the spectral energy distributions of individual stars in SMIDGE and include the effects of observational uncertainties in the data. We compare BEAST-derived dust extinction properties with tracers of the interstellar medium, such as the emission from the 12CO (2-1) transition (I(CO)), the dust mass surface density ({\Sigma}dust) from far-IR emission, the H I column density (N(HI)) from the 21cm transition, and the mass fraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; qPAH, derived from IR emission). We find that the dust extinction (A(V )) in the SMIDGE field is strongly correlated with {\Sigma}dust and I(CO), and less so with N(HI) and qPAH, and suggest potential explanations. Our extinction measurements are also sensitive to the presence of the 2175 {\AA} bump in the extinction curve toward UV bright stars. While most do not show evidence for the bump, we identify ~200 lines of sight that are 2175 {\AA} bump candidates. Abstract

We design an algorithm that generates an $n$-vertex unlabeled chordal graph uniformly at random in expected polynomial time. Along the way, we develop the following two results: (1) an $\mathsf{FPT}$ algorithm for counting and sampling labeled chordal graphs with a given automorphism $\pi$, parameterized by the number of moved points of $\pi$, and (2) a proof that the probability that a random $n$-vertex labeled chordal graph has a given automorphism $\pi\in S_n$ is at most $1/2^{c\max\{\mu^2,n\}}$, where $\mu$ is the number of moved points of $\pi$ and $c$ is a constant. Abstract

The 2017 observing campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) delivered the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images at the observing frequency of 230 GHz, leading to a number of unique studies on black holes and relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). In total, eighteen sources were observed: the main science targets, Sgr A* and M87 along with various calibrators. We investigated the morphology of the sixteen AGN in the EHT 2017 data set, focusing on the properties of the VLBI cores: size, flux density, and brightness temperature. We studied their dependence on the observing frequency in order to compare it with the Blandford-K\"onigl (BK) jet model. We modeled the source structure of seven AGN in the EHT 2017 data set using linearly polarized circular Gaussian components and collected results for the other nine AGN from dedicated EHT publications, complemented by lower frequency data in the 2-86 GHz range. Then, we studied the dependences of the VLBI core flux density, size, and brightness temperature on the frequency measured in the AGN host frame. We compared the observations with the BK jet model and estimated the magnetic field strength dependence on the distance from the central black hole. Our results indicate a deviation from the standard BK model, particularly in the decrease of the brightness temperature with the observing frequency. Either bulk acceleration of the jet material, energy transfer from the magnetic field to the particles, or both are required to explain the observations.

Abstract

Transient astronomy in the early, high-redshift (z>3) Universe is an unexplored regime that offers the possibility of probing the first stars and the Epoch of Reionization. During Cycles 1 and 2 of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) program enabled one of the first searches for transients in deep images (~ $30$ AB mag) over a relatively wide area ($25$ arcmin$^2$). One transient, AT 2023adsv, was discovered with an F200W magnitude of $28.04$ AB mag, and subsequent JWST observations revealed that the transient is a likely supernova (SN) in a host with $z_{\rm spec}=3.613\pm0.001$, a host mass of log(M$_{*}$/M$_\odot$) = $8.41^{+0.12}_{-0.12}$, and an inferred metallicity at the position of the SN of Z$_{*}$ = $0.3\pm0.1$ Z$_\odot$. At this redshift, the first detections in F115W and F150W show that AT 2023adsv had bright rest-frame ultraviolet flux at the time of discovery. The multi-band light curve of AT 2023adsv is best matched by a template of an SN IIP, with a peak absolute magnitude of $-18.3$ AB mag in the rest-frame $B$-band. We model AT 2023adsv's light curve and find a good match to a $20M_\odot$ red supergiant progenitor star with an explosion energy of $2.0\times 10^{51}$ ergs, likely higher than normally observed in the local Universe, but consistent with SNe IIP drawn from local, lower metallicity environments. AT 2023adsv is the most distant photometrically classified SN IIP yet discovered with a spectroscopic redshift measurement, and may represent a global shift in SNe IIP properties as a function of redshift. This discovery, and the ones sure to follow, demonstrate the continued need for facilities like JWST to build a statistical sample of core-collapse SNe to understand the evolution of their properties, and to constrain the poorly understood relationship between progenitor metallicity and massive star evolution., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures subjected to interlayer twists or heterostrains demonstrate structural superlubricity, leading to their potential use as superlubricants in micro- and nano-electro-mechanical devices. However, quantifying superlubricity across the vast four-dimensional heterodeformation space using experiments or atomic-scale simulations is a challenging task. In this work, we develop an atomically informed dynamic Frenkel--Kontorova (DFK) model for predicting the interface friction drag coefficient of an arbitrarily heterodeformed bilayer graphene (BG) system. The model is motivated by MD simulations of friction in heterodeformed BG. In particular, we note that interface dislocations formed during structural relaxation translate in unison when a heterodeformed BG is subjected to shear traction, leading us to the hypothesis that the kinetic properties of interface dislocations determine the friction drag coefficient of the interface. The constitutive law of the DFK model comprises the generalized stacking fault energy of the AB stacking, a scalar displacement drag coefficient, and the elastic properties of graphene, which are all obtained from atomistic simulations. Simulations of the DFK model confirm our hypothesis since a single choice of the displacement drag coefficient, fit to the kinetic property of an individual dislocation in an atomistic simulation, predicts interface friction in any heterodeformed BG. By bridging the gap between dislocation kinetics at the microscale to interface friction at the macroscale, the DFK model enables a high-throughput investigation of strain-engineered vdW heterostructures.

Abstract

Background: The increasing adoption of AI assistants in programming has led to numerous studies exploring their benefits. While developers consistently report significant productivity gains from these tools, empirical measurements often show more modest improvements. While prior research has documented self-reported experiences with AI-assisted programming tools, little to no work has been done to understand their usage patterns and the actual cognitive load imposed in practice. Objective: In this exploratory study, we aim to investigate the role AI assistants play in developer productivity. Specifically, we are interested in how developers' expertise levels influence their AI usage patterns, and how these patterns impact their actual cognitive load and productivity during development tasks. We also seek to better understand how this relates to their perceived productivity. Method: We propose a controlled observational study combining physiological measurements (EEG and eye tracking) with interaction data to examine developers' use of AI-assisted programming tools. We will recruit professional developers to complete programming tasks both with and without AI assistance while measuring their cognitive load and task completion time. Abstract

The rapid advancements in large language models and generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities are making their broad application in the high-stakes testing context more likely. Use of generative AI in the scoring of constructed responses is particularly appealing because it reduces the effort required for handcrafting features in traditional AI scoring and might even outperform those methods. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the differences in the feature-based and generative AI applications in constructed response scoring systems and propose a set of best practices for the collection of validity evidence to support the use and interpretation of constructed response scores from scoring systems using generative AI. We compare the validity evidence needed in scoring systems using human ratings, feature-based natural language processing AI scoring engines, and generative AI. The evidence needed in the generative AI context is more extensive than in the feature-based NLP scoring context because of the lack of transparency and other concerns unique to generative AI such as consistency. Constructed response score data from standardized tests demonstrate the collection of validity evidence for different types of scoring systems and highlights the numerous complexities and considerations when making a validity argument for these scores. 40. Turbulence-Resolving Integral Simulations for Wall-Bounded Flows

Abstract

The physical fidelity of turbulence models can significantly benefit from a partial resolution of fluctuations, but doing so often comes with a significant increase in computational cost. To explore this trade-off in the context of wall-bounded flows, this paper introduces a framework for Turbulence-Resolving Integral Simulations (TRIS) with the goal of efficiently resolving the largest motions using two-dimensional fields defined by instantaneous wall-normal integration of velocity and pressure. Self-sustaining turbulence with qualitatively realistic large-scale structures is demonstrated for TRIS on an open-channel (half-channel) flow using moment-of-momentum integral equations derived from Navier-Stokes with relatively simple closure approximations. Evidence from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) suggests that such an approach can resolve 35-40% of the Reynolds shear stress at arbitrarily high Reynolds number. The current implementation of TRIS can match this resolution while simulating one flow through time in ~1 minute on a single processor, even for very large Reynolds number. The present proof-of-concept TRIS results shown here rely on parameter tuning, and some quantitative differences with DNS spectra are observed, motivating ongoing and future efforts towards physics-based closures as well as extension to more general flow configurations such as boundary layers on immersed objects., Comment: Main Paper - 10 pages and 4 figures. Abstract

Clouds play a key role in Earth's radiation balance with complex effects that introduce large uncertainties into climate models. Real-time 3D cloud data is essential for improving climate predictions. This study leverages geostationary imagery from MSG/SEVIRI and radar reflectivity measurements of cloud profiles from CloudSat/CPR to reconstruct 3D cloud structures. We first apply self-supervised learning (SSL) methods-Masked Autoencoders (MAE) and geospatially-aware SatMAE on unlabelled MSG images, and then fine-tune our models on matched image-profile pairs. Our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods like U-Nets, and our geospatial encoding further improves prediction results, demonstrating the potential of SSL for cloud reconstruction.

Abstract

Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. 43. The effect of turbulence, gravity, and non-continuum hydrodynamic interactions on the drop size distribution in clouds

Abstract

The evolution of micron-sized droplets in clouds is studied with focus on the 'size-gap' regime of 15-40 $\mu m$ radius, where condensation and differential sedimentation are least effective in promoting growth. This bottleneck leads to inaccurate growth models and turbulence can potentially rectify disagreement with in-situ cloud measurements. The role of turbulent collisions, mixing of droplets, and water vapour fluctuations in crossing the 'size-gap' has been analysed in detail. Collisions driven by the coupled effects of turbulent shear and differential sedimentation are shown to grow drizzle sized droplets. Growth is also promoted by turbulence-induced water vapour fluctuations, which maintain polydispersity during the initial condensation driven growth and facilitate subsequent growth by differential sedimentation driven coalescence. The collision rate of droplets is strongly influenced by non-continuum hydrodynamics and so the size evolution beyond the condensation regime is found to be very sensitive to the mean free path of air. Turbulence-induced inertial clustering leads to a moderate enhancement in the growth rate but the intermittency of the turbulent shear rate does not change the coalescence rate significantly. The coupled influence of all these phenomena is evaluated by evolving a large number of droplets within an adiabatically rising parcel of air using a Monte Carlo scheme that captures turbulent intermittency and mixing.

Abstract

This Letter reports the precise measurement of reactor antineutrino spectrum and flux based on the full data set of 4.7 million inverse-beta-decay (IBD) candidates collected at Daya Bay near detectors. Expressed in terms of the IBD yield per fission, the antineutrino spectra from all reactor fissile isotopes and the specific $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ isotopes are measured with 1.3$\%$, 3$\%$ and 8$\%$ uncertainties respectively near the 3 MeV spectrum peak in reconstructed energy, reaching the best precision in the world. The total antineutrino flux and isotopic $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ fluxes are precisely measured to be $5.84\pm0.07$, $6.16\pm0.12$ and $4.16\pm0.21$ in units of $10^{-43} \mathrm{cm^2/fission}$. These measurements are compared with the Huber-Mueller (HM) model, the reevaluated conversion model based on the Kurchatov Institute (KI) measurement and the latest Summation Model (SM2023). The Daya Bay flux shows good consistency with KI and SM2023 models, but disagrees with HM model. The Daya Bay spectrum, however, disagrees with all model predictions.

Abstract

The high-redshift UV luminosity function provides important insights into the evolution of early galaxies. JWST has revealed an unexpectedly large population of bright ($M_\mathrm{UV} \lesssim -20$) galaxies at $z\gtrsim10$, implying fundamental changes in the star forming properties of galaxies at increasingly early times. However, constraining the fainter population ($M_\mathrm{UV} \gtrsim -18$) has been more challenging. In this work, we present the $z\gtrsim9$ UV luminosity function from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey. We calculate the UV luminosity function from several hundred $z\gtrsim9$ galaxy candidates that reach UV luminosities of $M_\mathrm{UV}\sim-17$ in redshift bins of $z\sim9-12$ (309 candidates) and $z\sim12-16$ (63 candidates). We search for candidates at $z\sim16-22.5$ and find none. We also estimate the $z\sim14-16$ luminosity function from the $z\geq14$ subset of the $z\sim12-16$ sample. Consistent with other measurements, we find an excess of bright galaxies that is in tension with many theoretical models, especially at $z\gtrsim12$. However, we also find high number densities at $-18\lesssim M_\mathrm{UV} \lesssim-17$, suggesting that there is a larger population of faint galaxies than expected, as well as bright ones. From our parametric fits for the luminosity function, we find steep faint end slopes of $-2.5\lesssim\alpha\lesssim-2.3$, suggesting a large population of faint ($M_\mathrm{UV} \gtrsim -17$) galaxies. Abstract

This work introduces Transformer-based Successive Convexification (T-SCvx), an extension of Transformer-based Powered Descent Guidance (T-PDG), generalizable for efficient six-degree-of-freedom (DoF) fuel-optimal powered descent trajectory generation. Our approach significantly enhances the sample efficiency and solution quality for nonconvex-powered descent guidance by employing a rotation invariant transformation of the sampled dataset. T-PDG was previously applied to the 3-DoF minimum fuel powered descent guidance problem, improving solution times by up to an order of magnitude compared to lossless convexification (LCvx). By learning to predict the set of tight or active constraints at the optimal control problem's solution, Transformer-based Successive Convexification (T-SCvx) creates the minimal reduced-size problem initialized with only the tight constraints, then uses the solution of this reduced problem to warm-start the direct optimization solver. 6-DoF powered descent guidance is known to be challenging to solve quickly and reliably due to the nonlinear and non-convex nature of the problem, the discretization scheme heavily influencing solution validity, and reference trajectory initialization determining algorithm convergence or divergence. Our contributions in this work address these challenges by extending T-PDG to learn the set of tight constraints for the successive convexification (SCvx) formulation of the 6-DoF powered descent guidance problem. In addition to reducing the problem size, feasible and locally optimal reference trajectories are also learned to facilitate convergence from the initial guess. Abstract

Machine learning has demonstrated remarkable promise for solving the trajectory generation problem and in paving the way for online use of trajectory optimization for resource-constrained spacecraft. However, a key shortcoming in current machine learning-based methods for trajectory generation is that they require large datasets and even small changes to the original trajectory design requirements necessitate retraining new models to learn the parameter-to-solution mapping. In this work, we leverage compositional diffusion modeling to efficiently adapt out-of-distribution data and problem variations in a few-shot framework for 6 degree-of-freedom (DoF) powered descent trajectory generation. Unlike traditional deep learning methods that can only learn the underlying structure of one specific trajectory optimization problem, diffusion models are a powerful generative modeling framework that represents the solution as a probability density function (PDF) and this allows for the composition of PDFs encompassing a variety of trajectory design specifications and constraints. We demonstrate the capability of compositional diffusion models for inference-time 6 DoF minimum-fuel landing site selection and composable constraint representations. 48. Hierarchical Vision-Language Alignment for Text-to-Image Generation via Diffusion Models

Abstract

Text-to-image generation has witnessed significant advancements with the integration of Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs), yet challenges remain in aligning complex textual descriptions with high-quality, visually coherent images. This paper introduces the Vision-Language Aligned Diffusion (VLAD) model, a generative framework that addresses these challenges through a dual-stream strategy combining semantic alignment and hierarchical diffusion. VLAD utilizes a Contextual Composition Module (CCM) to decompose textual prompts into global and local representations, ensuring precise alignment with visual features. Furthermore, it incorporates a multi-stage diffusion process with hierarchical guidance to generate high-fidelity images. Experiments conducted on MARIO-Eval and INNOVATOR-Eval benchmarks demonstrate that VLAD significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of image quality, semantic alignment, and text rendering accuracy. Human evaluations further validate the superior performance of VLAD, making it a promising approach for text-to-image generation in complex scenarios.

49. Uncertainties in tellurium-based dark matter searches stemming from nuclear structure uncertainties

Abstract

Using tellurium dioxide as a target, we calculate uncertainties on 90% upper confidence limits of Galilean effective field theory (Galilean EFT) couplings to a WIMP dark matter particle due to uncertainties in nuclear shell models. We find that these uncertainties in naturally-occurring tellurium isotopes are comparable across the different Galilean EFT couplings to uncertainties in xenon, with some reaching over 100%. We also consider the effect these nuclear uncertainties have on estimates of the annual modulation of dark matter from these searches, finding that the uncertainties in the modulation amplitude are proportional to the non-modulating upper confidence limit uncertainties. 50. Probing Visual Language Priors in VLMs

Abstract

Despite recent advances in Vision-Language Models (VLMs), many still over-rely on visual language priors present in their training data rather than true visual reasoning. To examine the situation, we introduce ViLP, a visual question answering (VQA) benchmark that pairs each question with three potential answers and three corresponding images: one image whose answer can be inferred from text alone, and two images that demand visual reasoning. By leveraging image generative models, we ensure significant variation in texture, shape, conceptual combinations, hallucinated elements, and proverb-based contexts, making our benchmark images distinctly out-of-distribution. While humans achieve near-perfect accuracy, modern VLMs falter; for instance, GPT-4 achieves only 66.17% on ViLP. To alleviate this, we propose a self-improving framework in which models generate new VQA pairs and images, then apply pixel-level and semantic corruptions to form "good-bad" image pairs for self-training. Our training objectives compel VLMs to focus more on actual visual inputs and have demonstrated their effectiveness in enhancing the performance of open-source VLMs, including LLaVA-v1.5 and Cambrian.
