Abstract

This article provides a brief summary of archaeological fieldwork conducted by the University of Vienna Middle Egypt Project at el-Sheikh Fadl Umm Raqaba with a special focus on one particular Late Period tomb, A2 T1. Having been discovered by Flinders Petrie in the early 20th century, this rock-cut tomb is of special interest because of a lengthy Aramaic dipinto inscription with a literary text telling the tale of the Egyptian rebel Inaros who fought against the Assyrian occupation during the 7th century BCE. The tomb was fully excavated for the first time by the Austrian mission in 2016 and 2017. Significant and substantial new evidence was uncovered including large quantities of human remains and artefacts that provide insights into the ancient occupation of the tomb as well as its dating. Importantly, the Aramaic inscription and the underlying original painted decoration of the tomb were subject to intensive new study that included first-hand confirmation of the reading of the rebel’s name as ynḥrw being the Aramaic form of the Egyptian name ’ir.t-ḥr-r.r=w (Greek Ináros). Further, the inscription and decorations were recorded with the assistance of Multispectral Imaging (MSI) technology which enabled to counterbalance degeneration and modern graffiti to enhance better reading. The first results of this new archaeological work would suggest that the tomb itself probably dates somewhat later than had been previously suggested, which, nevertheless, opens up new possibilities to explain the significance and provide an interpretation for this unusual inscription as well as for the tomb, the site and the region surrounding el-Sheikh Fadl.

Entscheidend für die Verwirklichung von Speicherringexperimenten ist die Beschaffenheit und Leistungsfähigkeit des internen Targets sowie das Verständnis für die Targetstrahleigenschaften, wie beispielsweise Geschwindigkeit, Dichte oder Masse. Die Entwicklung eines mit Wasserstoff betriebenen Cluster-Jet Targets für das PANDA Experiment der zukünftigen internationalen Beschleunigeranlage FAIR steht im Fokus dieser Arbeit. Detaillierte Untersuchungen der Clustergeschwindigkeiten, Flächendichten und Clustermassen führten zum Aufbau und Betrieb des weltweit leistungsfähigsten, mit Wasserstoff betriebenen Cluster-Jet Targets (PANDA Prototyp), das zudem tiefere Einblicke in den komplexen Clusterproduktionsprozess gewährt. Die Voraussetzungen für PANDA, einschließlich des Zugangs zu höchsten Luminositäten, werden vollständig von diesem Target abgedeckt, das somit den aktuellen Qualitätsmaßstab der Cluster-Jet Target Technologie definiert. The realisation of a storage ring experiment hinges largely on the performance of the internal target and the precise knowledge of the target beam characteristics, e.g. the velocity, density, or mass. This thesis focusses on the development of a hydrogen cluster-jet target for the PANDA experiment at the future international accelerator facility FAIR. The detailed investigation on the cluster velocity, areal density, and cluster mass lead to the most efficient hydrogen cluster-jet target worldwide (PANDA prototype) and moreover to deeper insights into the complex cluster production process. The final cluster-jet target for PANDA was designed and constructed on the basis of the results gained throughout this work and the associated particular optimisation studies. It covers all requirements for PANDA, including the access to the high luminosity mode, and defines the state of the art of cluster-jet target technology.

Abstract

Serpentinite-hosting mud volcanoes, located in the Marianna forearc subduction zone, were drilled during IODP Expedition 366. Recovered samples from Asùt Tesoru seamount provide new insights on the generation of organic matter in deep environments. Short-chain alcohols, volatile fatty acids and light hydrocarbons are produced within hyperalkaline pore fluids (pH 12.5) rich in H2. The stable isotope values of those species show heavy δ13C values, suggesting a formation process through Fischer-Tropsch-Type reactions. This close isotopic study brings new constraints on the reaction pathways leading to the formation of not only light hydrocarbons, but also of short-chain organic molecules. These compounds may serve as precursors of building blocks essential to life in deep oceanic settings.

Abstract

No settlement remains at Early Dynastic Memphis, the first ‘capital’ of the newly emerging Egyptian state, have yet been located. This study draws together exclusive evidence from three well-known non-elite Memphite cemeteries Saqqara-Serapeum, Turah and the recently excavated site of Helwan (all dating from 3200 to 2700 BC) to explore the society of this early urban centre through its funerary remains. The study engages in statistical analyses of cemetery data comparing grave parameters such as volume, quantity of grave goods, their materials and pottery vessel types, but also architecture, body protection, skeletal sex and the age of the deceased across sites. The application of statistical hypothesis testing techniques forms a methodological cornerstone highlighting some pitfalls of mortuary analyses rooted in Processual theoretical frameworks. As a result, a nuanced funerary culture with a significant degree of mortuary variability was revealed at each of the sites investigated. Non-elite funerary provision at Memphis was influenced by a complex web of factors such as economic potential, relationships to local elites, communal and personal identities, choice, and practicality. While mortuary differentiation by sex could not be proven statistically, evidence emerged for significant age differentiation in the funerary provision. The four communities investigated are distinct and each represent a different population within the Memphite region ranging from a main necropolis (Helwan) to a cemetery of a secondary or tertiary local centre (Turah). The smallscale regionality observed at Memphis should serve as a springboard for future research on Early Dynastic Egypt. Finally, the study has highlighted the research potential of statistical analyses to extract vital information from old data, alongside the importance of hypothesis testing in the evaluation of such analyses.

Abstract

Objective: Susac syndrome (SuS), multiple sclerosis (MS), and primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) present diagnostic challenges due to overlapping clinical features. We aimed to enhance diagnostic precision by developing the SPAMS (SuS, PACNS, MS) score, a practical radiological tool., Methods: This multicenter study included 99 patients (43 SuS, 37 MS, 19 PACNS) from South American countries. Relevant MRI features were identified through an elastic-net model determined key variables., Results: The SPAMS score assigned 2 points for snowball lesions, 1 point for spokes-like lesions, or if there are more than 4 lesions in the corpus callosum, corpus callosum involvement, or cerebellar involvement. It subtracted 1 point if gadolinium-enhancing lesions or 4 points if Dawson's fingers are present. Bootstrapping validated the optimal cutoff at 2 points, exhibiting a diagnostic performance of area under the curve = 0.931, sensitivity = 88%, specificity = 89%, positive predictive value = 88%, negative predictive value = 89%, and accuracy = 88%., Interpretation: When specific MRI findings coexisted, the SPAMS score differentiated SuS from MS and PACNS. Access to MRI and standard protocol sequences makes it a valuable tool for timely diagnosis and treatment, potentially preventing disability progression and severe clinical outcomes.
