1. Four new deeply-eclipsing white dwarfs in ZTF

Abstract

We present the results of a search for deeply-eclipsing white dwarfs in the ZTF Data Release 4. We identify nine deeply-eclipsing white dwarf candidates, four of which we followed up with high-cadence photometry and spectroscopy. Three of these systems show total eclipses in the ZTF data and our follow-up APO 3.5-meter telescope observations. Even though the eclipse duration is consistent with sub-stellar companions, our analysis shows that all four systems contain a white dwarf with low-mass stellar companions of ~0.1 Msol. We provide mass and radius constraints for both stars in each system based on our photometric and spectroscopic fitting. Finally, we present a list of 41 additional eclipsing WD+M candidates identified in a preliminary search of ZTF DR7, including 12 previously studied systems. We identify two new candidate short-period, eclipsing, white dwarf-brown dwarf binaries within our sample of 41 WD+M candidates based on PanSTARRS colors., Comment: Accepted for publication with MNRAS. 12 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

We present the first near infra-red spectrum of the faint white dwarf companion HD 114174 B, obtained with Project 1640. Our spectrum, covering the Y, J and H bands, combined with previous TRENDS photometry measurements, allows us to place further constraints on this companion. We suggest two possible scenarios; either this object is an old, low mass, cool H atmosphere white dwarf with Teff ~ 3800 K or a high mass white dwarf with Teff > 6000 K, potentially with an associated cool (Teff ~ 700 K) brown dwarf or debris disk resulting in an infra-red excess in the L band. We also provide an additional astrometry point for 2014 June 12 and use the modelled companion mass combined with the RV and direct imaging data to place constraints on the orbital parameters for this companion., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Using data from the extended Kepler mission in K2 Campaign 10 we identify two eclipsing binaries containing white dwarfs with cool companions that have extremely short orbital periods of only 71.2 min (SDSS J1205-0242, a.k.a. EPIC 201283111) and 72.5 min (SDSS J1231+0041, a.k.a. EPIC 248368963). Despite their short periods, both systems are detached with small, low-mass companions, in one case a brown dwarf, and the other case either a brown dwarf or a low-mass star. We present follow-up photometry and spectroscopy of both binaries, as well as phase-resolved spectroscopy of the brighter system, and use these data to place preliminary estimates on the physical and binary parameters. SDSS J1205-0242 is composed of a $0.39\pm0.02$M$_\odot$ helium-core white dwarf which is totally eclipsed by a $0.049\pm0.006$M$_\odot$ ($51\pm6$M$_J$) brown dwarf companion, while SDSS J1231+0041 is composed of a $0.56\pm0.07$M$_\odot$ white dwarf which is partially eclipsed by a companion of mass $\lesssim 0.095$M$_\odot$. In the case of SDSS J1205-0242 we look at the combined constraints from common-envelope evolution and brown dwarf models; the system is compatible with similar constraints from other post common-envelope binaries given the current parameter uncertainties, but has potential for future refinement., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We report the discovery of the sixth known eclipsing double white dwarf (WD) system, SDSS J1152+0248, with a 2.3968 +/- 0.0003 h orbital period, in data from the Kepler Mission's K2 continuation. Analysing and modelling the K2 data together with ground-based fast photometry, spectroscopy, and radial-velocity measurements, we determine that the primary is a DA-type WD with mass M1 = 0.47 +/- 0.11 Msun, radius R1 = 0.0197 +/- 0.0035 Rsun, and cooling age t1 = 52 +/- 36 Myr. No lines are detected, to within our sensitivity, from the secondary WD, but it is likely also of type DA. Its central surface brightness, as measured from the secondary eclipse, is 0.31 of the primary's surface brightness. Its mass, radius, and cooling age, respectively, are M2 = 0.44 +/- 0.09 Msun, R2 = 0.0223 +0.0064 -0.0050 Rsun, and t2 = 230 +/- 100 Myr. Abstract

We present an extended grid of mean three-dimensional (3D) spectra for low-mass, pure-hydrogen atmosphere DA white dwarfs (WDs). We use CO5BOLD radiation-hydrodynamics 3D simulations covering Teff = 6000-11,500 K and logg = 5-6.5 (cgs units) to derive analytical functions to convert spectroscopically determined 1D temperatures and surface gravities to 3D atmospheric parameters. Along with the previously published 3D models, the 1D to 3D corrections are now available for essentially all known convective DA WDs (i.e., logg = 5-9). For low-mass WDs, the correction in temperature is relatively small (a few per cent at the most), but the surface gravities measured from the 3D models are lower by as much as 0.35 dex. We revisit the spectroscopic analysis of the extremely low-mass (ELM) WDs, and demonstrate that the 3D models largely resolve the discrepancies seen in the radius and mass measurements for relatively cool ELM WDs in eclipsing double WD and WD + milli-second pulsar binary systems. Abstract

We present Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra of the 4.6 h period double white dwarf SDSS J125733.63+542850.5. Combined with Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical data, these reveal that the massive white dwarf (secondary) has an effective temperature T2 = 13030 +/- 70 +/- 150 K and a surface gravity log g2 = 8.73 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.05 (statistical and systematic uncertainties respectively), leading to a mass of M2 = 1.06 Msun. The temperature of the extremely low-mass white dwarf (primary) is substantially lower at T1 = 6400 +/- 37 +/- 50 K, while its surface gravity is poorly constrained by the data. The relative flux contribution of the two white dwarfs across the spectrum provides a radius ratio of R1/R2 = 4.2, which, together with evolutionary models, allows us to calculate the cooling ages. The secondary massive white dwarf has a cooling age of about 1 Gyr, while that of the primary low-mass white dwarf is likely to be much longer, possibly larger than 5 Gyrs, depending on its mass and the strength of chemical diffusion. These results unexpectedly suggest that the low-mass white dwarf formed long before the massive white dwarf, a puzzling discovery which poses a paradox for binary evolution., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Defects/imperfections can occur during manufacturing, assembly, welding, and other processes, which can reduce the critical buckling load. However, the axial buckling load is beyond the scope of this work, and there are many studies on the stiffening effect of longitudinal dents. This concept combined the idea of the dent-to-stiffener evaluation concept for thin-walled steel cylinders. This study aims to transform the dents into artificial dents for a stiffening effect on the buckling phenomena. For this purpose, 37 thin-walled steel cylinder models, including the perfect model, were designed for varying dent shapes, dent widths, dent depths, dent lengths, and dent angles. The study also contributed to the effect of dent parameters on the critical buckling load of thin-walled steel cylinders. In particular, increasing the initial buckling will motivate the industry to convert dents into stiffeners with small artificial touches to enhance the longevity of the structure. The results showed that the introduction of certain artificial dents can significantly increase the critical buckling load of cylinders, thus improving their resistance against buckling, which has significant implications for various industries that use thin-walled steel cylinders in their structures. The proposed simulations for transforming dents into artificial stiffeners can be a valuable tool for enhancing the longevity and safety of thin-walled steel cylinders and other structures.

Abstract

Improving microstructural, mechanical, and thermal properties of Ni-Co-Bronze composites is crucial for various applications. In this study, five Ni-Co-Bronze (CuSn)+XTiC (0, 3, 7, 10, and 15 wt.%) composites were produced by using the hot pressing method. The effect of TiC reinforcement rate on each of their microstructure, wear, hardness, and thermal properties was investigated. Within the scope of microstructure analysis, the scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and XRD analysis were employed. Thermal analyses were carried out for thermal differences between the samples. Furthermore, microhardness, impact, and wear tests were run to estimate mechanical behaviors of Ni-Co Bronze+XTiC composite. Experimental results indicated that TiC rate had an important effect on the microstructure, wear-resistance and microhardness of Ni-Co bronze composite. As the TiC reinforcement rate increased, the hardness of Ni-Co Bronze+XTiC composites varied between 180 HV and 450 HV. Consequently, microstructure analysis revealed that there was a serious interaction between reinforcement and matrix. Wear resistance increased with a TiC (7-10) wt.% rate but decreased at high TiC rates. It was clearly seen that the wear pattern was both oxidative and abrasive.
