The prevalence of glucose intolerance was higher in urban dwellers and in farmers compared with nomads. Abstract

Abstract

現在のインド北東部アルナーチャル・プラデーシュ州が位置する地域の開発は、20 世紀半ばから始まった。この地域の地誌には伝統文化に関する記述が多い一方、政府による開発政策については専門的な記述が散見されるだけである。そこで本稿は、アルナーチャル・プラデーシュ州の開発史を、地元の老人の語りから描くことを目的とした。同州ローワー・スバンシリ県ディード村のトコ・リバ氏、ウエスト・シアン県ドジ村のグンケン・バグラ氏、アッパー・スバンシリ県リグ村のロムガ・ドゥロム氏は、1947 年のインド独立以降に政府の指導で進められた水田稲作導入の歴史を詳細に記憶していた。開発政策の一環として進められた水田稲作の導入、共同作業による水田稲作の実験、アッサム州での鉄や塩の購入についての3 者の語りは、政府側の視点による地誌の記述を補完するものであった。また高収量品種が配布されてから住民は自発的に水田稲作を始めるようになったこと、60年間の試行錯誤を経て独自の稲作技術を作り上げたことは、3 者の語りに共通しており、アルナーチャル・プラデーシュ州における緑の革命の展開が明らかになった。老人の語る同州の開発史は、地誌や政府刊行物の一面的な記述を相対化し、開発現場のリアリティを伝えるものであり、今後の地域行政や地域文化を考える際に重要である。, Regional development in Eastern Himalaya has been progressed by the Indian government since 1940s. Geographical documents of this region focused more on the traditional culture than on the development policies and their impacts on the communities. This paper aims to depict the local experience of regional development in eastern Himalaya from the oral history of the elderly people in Arunachal Pradesh, India. Mr. Toko Riba at Deed village in Lower Subansiri District, Mr. Gunken Bagra at Doji village in West Siang District, Mr. Romga Durom at Ligu village in Upper Subansiri District remembered the detailed process of introducing paddy rice cultivation promoted by Indian government since 1940s. The three informants narrated that the high-yield rice variety led the people to start paddy rice cultivation, and that they have developed their original cultivation techniques after several decades of trial and errors. Abstract

Objectives: To clarify the association between glucose intolerance and high altitudes (2900-4800 m) in a hypoxic environment in Tibetan highlanders and to verify the hypothesis that high altitude dwelling increases vulnerability to diabetes mellitus (DM) accelerated by lifestyle change or ageing. Design: Cross-sectional epidemiological study on Tibetan highlanders. Participants: We enrolled 1258 participants aged 40-87 years. The rural population comprised farmers in Domkhar (altitude 2900-3800 m) and nomads in Haiyan (3000-3100 m), Ryuho (4400 m) and Changthang (4300-4800 m). Urban area participants were from Leh (3300 m) and Jiegu (3700 m). Main outcome measure: Participants were classified into six glucose tolerance-based groups: DM, intermediate hyperglycaemia (IHG), normoglycaemia (NG), fasting DM, fasting IHG and fasting NG. Prevalence of glucose intolerance was compared in farmers, nomads and urban dwellers. Effects of dwelling at high altitude or hypoxia on glucose intolerance were analysed with the confounding factors of age, sex, obesity, lipids, haemoglobin, hypertension and lifestyle, using multiple logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of DM (fasting DM)/IHG (fasting IHG) was 8.9% (6.5%)/25.1% (12.7%), respectively, in all participants. This prevalence was higher in urban dwellers (9.5% (7.1%)/28.5% (11.7%)) and in farmers (8.5% (6.1%)/28.5% (18.3%)) compared with nomads (8.2% (5.7%)/15.7% (9.7%)) (p=0.0140/0.0001). Dwelling at high altitude was significantly associated with fasting IHG+fasting DM/fasting DM (ORs for >4500 and 3500-4499 m were 3.59/4.36 and 2.07/1.76 vs <3500 m, respectively). After adjusting for lifestyle change, hypoxaemia and polycythaemia were closely associated with glucose intolerance. Conclusions: Socioeconomic factors, hypoxaemia and the effects of altitudes ≥3500 m play a major role in the high prevalence of glucose intolerance in highlanders. Tibetan highlanders may be vulnerable to glucose intolerance, with polycythemia as a sign of poor hypoxic adaptation, accelerated by lifestyle change and aging.

Abstract

Diverse tree species, understory bamboos, shrubs, and herbs in mixed deciduous forests (MDFs) provide not only timber, but also non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in terms of fuel, food, and medicinal plants. Sustainability and the economic value of commercially extracted NTFPs have been studied mainly for the aboveground vegetative components of plants. However, such important knowledge of the underground parts of the plants is limited because of difficulties observing them and lesser consideration of the lower value of NTFPs, compared with timber, in forest management. Here we established allometric models to predict the root and corm biomasses of two plants, Rauvolfia serpentina and Amorphophallus bulbifer , in relation to their aboveground, vegetative parts. Estimated underground biomasses of the two species were compared among three habitat types: a swidden field, a fallow forest after cultivation, and a ridge forest that was not subjected to swidden agriculture. The length of the longest leaf of each individual plant explained the accumulation of the underground biomass of R. serpentina ( R 2 = 0.64, P < 0.001) in a positive, linear relationship, and stem diameter at ground level did the same for A. bulbifer ( R 2 = 0.92, P < 0.001). The largest biomass accumulation of R. serpentina was found in swidden fields because of its light demanding nature, which was supported by a significant, negative correlation between canopy cover and leaf length (Pearson’s correlation = −0.612, P < 0.05). Because A. bulbifer was cut during weeding time, we could not measure its biomass accumulation in swidden fields; however, its occurrence in swidden fields was confirmed by farmers and field observations. No difference in the biomass accumulation of A. bulbifer was observed between the fallow and ridge forests. The promising growth of both species in the same year that a fire occurred during swidden cultivation suggests that the underground regeneration source provides advantages related to the harvesting of NTFPs and allows them to co-exist with slashing and burning in a swidden system, as well as surface fires in an MDF. Establishment of the two species in fallow vegetation was possibly facilitated by ecological and anthropogenic factors such as the reproductive bulbils of A. bulbifer and the broken root fragments of R. serpentina left after the harvest, as well as the dormancy period of these species during the dry season. This study revealed the cultivation potential of NTFPs that are suitable for community and agroforest plantations using a swidden system in an MDF that experiences fires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: Prevalence of hypertension was examined in a widely dispersed (45 110 km(2)) representative group of Ladakhi in Northern India. The influence of hypoxic environment of wide-ranged altitude (2600-4900 m) and lifestyle change on hypertension was studied., Methods: 2800 participants (age 20-94 years) were enrolled. Systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure of ≥90 mm Hg and/or taking current anti-hypertensive medicine was defined as hypertension. Height and weight for body mass index and SpO₂ were examined. The rural population comprised six subdivisions with a distinct altitude, dietary and occupational pattern. Participants in the urban area of Leh consist of two groups, that is, migrants settled in Leh from the Changthang nomadic area, and dwellers born in Leh. The prevalence of hypertension in the two groups was compared with that in the farmers and nomads in rural areas. The effects of ageing, hypoxia, dwelling at high altitude, obesity, modernised occupation, dwelling in an urban area, and rural-to-urban migration to hypertension were analysed by multiple logistic regression., Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 37.0% in all participants and highest in migrants settled in Leh (48.3%), followed by dwellers born in Leh town (41.1%) compared with those in rural areas (33.5). The prevalence of hypertension in nomads (all: 27.7%, Tibetan/Ladakhi: 19.7/31.9%)) living at higher altitude (4000-4900 m) was relatively low. The associated factors with hypertension were ageing, overweight, dwelling at higher altitude, engagement in modernised sedentary occupations, dwelling in urban areas, and rural-to-urban migration. The effects of lifestyle change and dwelling at high altitude were independently associated with hypertension by multivariate analysis adjusted with confounding factors., Conclusions: Socioeconomic and cultural factors play a big role with the effect of high altitude itself on high prevalence of hypertension in highlanders in Ladakh., (Published by the BMJ Publishing Group Limited.
