Shipyard industries affect the performance of manufactured ships. A designed ship needs well-performed shipbuilders to construct the ship following quality, timeline, budget, and environmental impact of future challenges. Shipyard performance measurement, including shipbuilding, ship repair, and ship conversion, will remain important as it is a powerful tool for strategic enhancement. This study proposes a conceptual and transdisciplinary framework for shipyard performance measurement through integrated Value Engineering and Risk Assessment (VENRA). The framework comprises five criteria groups: Technical, Business, External, Personnel Safety, and Environment, assessed by integrated fuzzy DEcision-MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and Weighted Evaluation Technique (WET) methods and applied to an Indonesian shipyard. 'Shipyard's manufacturing facility' and 'Manufacturing/building strategy' are the most critical factors, while 'Personnel' and 'Technology Level' significantly influence other criteria. The framework can determine the shipyard's lowest score within the prioritised criteria and sub-criteria to evaluate the cause–effect link and prioritise steps to improve performance. Preparation for a sea voyage is one of the fundamental aspects of navigation. Several complexities are involved during the preparation of the ship for navigation due to the nature of maritime work. At this point, analysing human-related error is of paramount importance to ensure the safety of the ship and the crew. This paper describes the principles of a methodology, namely fuzzy-based shipboard operation human reliability analysis (SOHRA), to quantitatively perform human error assessment through procedures of preparing the ship for navigation. While the SOHRA (a marine-specific HRA approach) quantifies human error, the fuzzy logic deals with ambiguity and vagueness in the human error detection problem. The findings show that the total HEP (Human error probability) is found 1.49E-01 for preparing the ship for navigation. Consequently, the paper provides practical contributions to shore-based safety professionals, ship managers, and masters of the ship since it performs a systematic human reliability assessment and enhances safety control levels in the operational aspect. The application of data mining techniques is an extended practice in numerous domains; however, within the context of maritime inspections, the aforementioned methods are rarely applied. Thus, the application of data-mining techniques for the prediction and ranking of non-conformities identified during vessel inspections could be of significant managerial contribution to the safety of shipping companies, as non-conformities could potentially lead to real accidents if not addressed adequately. Hence, specific data mining methods are investigated and applied in this paper to predict and rank non-conformities on oil tankers using a database recorded by tanker shipping companies in Turkey from 2006 to 2019. The results of this study reveal that specific non-conformities, for instance, inadequate ice operations or inadequate general appearance and condition of hull, superstructure and external weather decks, are not company-based problems, rather they are industry wide issues for all tanker shipping companies. The operational costs of ship recycling yards will increase since the new regulations require more stringent standards for preserving the occupational and environmental health and safety of the people involved in recycling activities. Improvement of the current operational procedures and current levels of productivity will be critical to survive in a competitive industry dominated by low-cost substandard yards. The main aim of this study is to increase the productivity of the yards through the improvement of processes. In this study, cutting operation in the secondary zone is investigated using discrete event simulation. Alternative cutting technologies have been tested in a simulation to assess their impact on production performance and operating costs. This study shows that plasma cutting is a good alternative to oxyfuel cutting. Overall research conducted in this study is significant contribution to the literature as a novel approach for modelling processes and for the implementation of cutting technologies. Maritime accidents are complex processes in which many factors are involved and contribute to accident development. In order to capture underlying factors in accidents, countries adapted an accident investigation system with the aim of learning from these rare events and prevent similar occurrences in the future. Often these accident investigation reports are converted into databases, which lack a concise and user-friendly classification system, as a result, there are a lot of inadequacies in data-collection and tagging procedures. Therefore, the authors propose to apply an approach to classify human factors (HFs) appeared in past maritime accidents, aiming to develop a set of HF categories which can be used for accidents learning. For this purpose, an accident database was obtained and a two-stage approach was adapted to conduct analysis: first, an open card-sorting case study is organised to group the HFs extracted from an historical accident database. Second, a hybrid card-sorting method was utilized to fully achieve the classification of HFs. Our study revealed issues where HFs are weakly defined and similar factors are duplicated by investigators who populate the database. Increasing environmental, social and economic problems, born by unceasing economic growth, have transformed our approach to the development concept. The 1980s saw the appearance of the sustainable development term and, during the 1990s, sustainability notion was implicitly framed as an integrated concept, frequently, termed as the 'triple bottom line' approach. Among several initiatives and efforts to balance our economic and societal pursuits with environmental challenges the, lately, introduced United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) refer to a remarkable evolution, which came to strengthen and establish sustainability conception as an integrated social, economic and environmental triptych. International shipping, as the major carrier of world trade and significant contributor to environmental degradation has, definitely, a vital role to play in facilitating the UN's sustainability venture. Although there is a great amount of legislative instruments, codes and guidance to address sustainability in shipping, though, limited research has been devoted to identify how the tanker and dry bulk maritime sector has responded to such recent cohesive attitude to sustainable maritime development. Through a quantitative research approach this empirical study aimed to investigate maritime industry's insights and attitudes in relation to the, newly, introduced triple bottom line approach to global sustainable development. Research data were collected via a questionnaire survey conducted to 50 tanker and/or dry bulk shipping companies. Pearson's chi-square test of independence and Spearman's correlation coefficient measures were utilized to test our three formulated hypotheses. Findings highlighted increasing awareness and adaptation of the maritime sector to the triple bottom line approach and, subsequent, sustainability absorption under the auspices of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) business model. Introduction of sustainable development in an integrated manner appears to have influenced the extent that statutory maritime regulations occupy to the formulation of marine safety management systems. To sum up, the integrated management system model turned out to be the most rated tactic to manage sustainability and, as such, a conceptual CSR framework was proposed to facilitate such an objective.
