Abstract

Interactions of hydrocarbons (HCs) and clay surfaces are responsible for fluid behaviour within shale reservoirs. These interactions are affected by the diversity of HC components and the variations in environmental conditions. This study examines the interactions between kaolinite clay, featuring two distinct basal surfaces, and an array of HCs. We assess the impact of various molecular structures, functional groups, and environmental conditions (focusing on the reservoir temperature and pressure ranges) on the adsorption selectivity, surface packing, molecular alignment and orientation, and diffusion of HCs. Analyses of molecular interaction energies provide a quantitative elucidation of the adsorption mechanisms of HCs on the different kaolinite surfaces. Our findings suggest that molecular configuration, functional groups, and spatial effects dictate the distribution patterns of HCs for the different kaolinite surfaces. The differences in the interaction energy between various HCs with kaolinite reveal the adsorption strength of different HCs in the order of asphaltenes>heteroatomic HCs>saturated HCs>aromatic HCs. Furthermore, we observe that the adsorptive characteristics are highly temperature-sensitive; with increased temperatures markedly reducing the adsorption amount. Beyond a certain threshold, the effect of pressure rise on the fluid behaviour of HCs is non-negligible and is related to molecular packing and reduced mobility. Simulation results based on actual geological characteristics demonstrate notable adsorption disparities among hydrocarbon components on different kaolinite surfaces, influenced by competitive adsorption and clay surface interactions. Polar surfaces are predominantly occupied by heteroatomic HCs, whereas on non-polar surfaces, asphaltenes and heavy saturated HCs develop multi-layer adsorption structures, with molecules aligned parallel to the surface.

Abstract

Although numerous investigations reveal the gas physisorption characteristics of porous materials and a variety of theories have also established to describe gas physisorption during the past century, the essence of physisorption behavior of gas within nanoscale space is still indistinct. We find that the physisorption behavior of complex molecular system of methane and carbon dioxide within nanoporous materials exhibits a quantum effect. Based on this quantum effect, we established a physisorption equation from the perspective of quantum mechanics to re-understand the basic principles of gas physisorption within nanopores. Energy level transition triggers gas physisorption, and non-uniform spatial distribution of energy-quantized molecules within nanopores dominates the gas physisorption behavior. The spatial distribution of gas molecules can be adjusted by temperature, pressure and potential energy field. Abstract

Understanding the potential mechanisms of reservoir fluid storage, transport, and oil recovery in shale matrices requires an accurate and quantitative evaluation of the fluid behavior and phase state characteristics of the confined fluid in nanopores as well as the elucidation of the mechanisms within complex pore structures. The research to date has preliminary focused on the fluid behavior and its influencing factors within a single nanopore morphology, with limited attention of the role of pore structures in controlling fluid behavior and a lack of quantitative methods for characterizing the phase state of fluids. To address this gap, we utilize molecular dynamics simulations to examine the phase state characteristics of confined fluids across various pore sizes and geometries, revealing the mechanisms by which wall boundary conditions influence fluid behavior. We use the simulation results to validate the accuracy and applicability of the quantitative characterization model for fluid phase state properties. Our findings show that the phase state features of fluids differ significantly between slit-like and cylindrical pores, with lower absorption limits in pore sizes of 2.8 and 7 nm, respectively. Based on pore sizes, we identified three regions of confined fluid phases and determined that the influence of the adsorbed state fraction on fluid phase state cannot be ignored for pores smaller than approximately 85 nm. Abstract

To study the impact of faults on the enrichment and mobility of shale oil in the Gulong area, representative rock samples were selected in this paper. Based on geochemical data and chemical kinetics methods, coupled with shale oil enrichment and mobility analysis techniques, the shale oil generation quantity and in situ oil content were evaluated from the perspectives of shale oil generation and micro migration, and the mobility of shale oil was revealed. At the same time, the hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency (HEE) of shale was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized, combined with the development of faults. The research results indicate that the study area mainly develops organic-rich felsic (ORF)/organic-containing felsic (OCF) shale, their proportion in both wells exceeds 65%, and the resource amount is the largest in this type of lithofacies. The development of a fault controls the enrichment of shale oil, and the in situ oil content and oil saturation index (OSI) of the shale in well Y58, which is close to the fault, are significantly worse than those in well S2. Well Y58 has 9.52 mg/g and 424.83 mg/g TOC respectively, while well S2 has 11.34 mg/g and 488.73 mg/g TOC respectively. The fault enhanced the migration of shale oil, increasing the efficiency of oil expulsion. As a result, the components with weak polarity or small molecules, such as saturated hydrocarbons and low carbon number n-alkanes, are prone to migration, reducing the mobility of shale oil.
