1. Alpha-induced inelastic scattering and alpha-transfer reactions in $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O within the Algebraic Cluster Model

Abstract

The molecular algebraic model based on three and four alpha clusters is used to describe the inelastic scattering of alpha particles populating low-lying states in $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O. Optical potentials and inelastic formfactors are obtained by folding densities and transition densities obtained within the molecular model. One-step and multi-step processes can be included in the reaction mechanism calculation. In spite of the simplicity of the approach the molecular model with rotations and vibrations provides a reliable description of reactions where $\alpha$-cluster degrees of freedom are involved and good results are obtained for the excitation of several low-lying states. Abstract

We give an account of the main achievements of the scientific career of Andrea Vitturi so far, that have recently been discussed during the workshop "Theoretical Nuclear Physics in Padova" on the occasion of his retirement from full professor at the University of Padova. He has oftentimes been the driving force behind numerous contributions to nuclear structure and nuclear reactions that are here reviewed: giant resonances, pairing correlations, collective modes, algebraic models, inelastic excitations, electromagnetic response, break-up and transfer reactions, coupled-channel formalism, clustering, subbarrier fusion processes, etc. Among these topics several inspirational works and ideas can be found that we would like to highlight.

Abstract

Densities and transition densities are computed in an equilateral triangular alpha-cluster model for $^{12}$C, in which each $\alpha$ particle is taken as a gaussian density distribution. The ground-state, the symmetric vibration (Hoyle state) and the asymmetric bend vibration are analyzed in a molecular approach and dissected into their components in a series of harmonic functions, revealing their intrinsic structures. The transition densities in the laboratory frame are then used to construct form-factors and to compute DWBA inelastic cross-sections for the $^{12}$C$(\alpha, \alpha')$ reaction. The comparison with experimental data indicates that the simple geometrical model with rotations and vibrations gives a reliable description of reactions where $\alpha$-cluster degrees of freedom are involved.

Form factors for $\alpha+{^{12}}$C inelastic scattering are obtained within two theoretical ($\alpha+\alpha+\alpha$) approaches: The hyperspherical framework for three identical bosons, and the algebraic cluster model assuming the $D_{3h}$ symmetry of an equilateral triangle subject to rotations and vibrations. Results show a good agreement, with form factors involving the Hoyle state having a slightly larger extension within the hyperspherical approach. Abstract

The algebraic molecular model is used in $^{12}$C to construct densities and transition densities connecting low-lying states of the rotovibrational spectrum, first and foremost those belonging to the rotational bands based on the ground and the Hoyle states. These densities are then used as basic ingredients to calculate, besides electromagnetic transition probabilities, nuclear potentials and formfactors to describe elastic and inelastic $\alpha$+$^{12}$C scattering processes. Abstract

Isospin properties of dipole excitations in 74 Ge are investigated using the ({\alpha},{\alpha}'{\gamma}) reaction and compared to ({\gamma},{\gamma}) data. The results indicate that the dipole excitations in the energy region of 6 to 9 MeV adhere to the scenario of the recently found splitting of the region of dipole excitations into two separated parts: one at low energy, being populated by both isoscalar and isovector probes, and the other at high energy, excited only by the electromagnetic probe. Relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation (RQTBA) calculations show a reduction in the isoscalar E1 strength with an increase in excitation energy, which is consistent with the measurement., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present an extension of the random--phase approximation (RPA) where the RPA phonons are used as building blocks to construct the excited states. In our model, that we call double RPA (DRPA), we include up to two RPA phonons. This is an approximate and simplified way, with respect to the full second random--phase approximation (SRPA), to extend the RPA by including two particle--two hole configurations. Some limitations of the standard SRPA model, related to the violation of the stability condition, are not encountered in the DRPA. We also verify in this work that the energy--weighted sum rules are satisfied. The DRPA is applied to low--energy modes and giant resonances in the nucleus $^{16}$O. We show that the model (i) produces a global downwards shift of the energies with respect to the RPA spectra; (ii) provides a shift that is however strongly reduced compared to that generated by the standard SRPA. This model represents an alternative way of correcting for the SRPA anomalous energy shift, compared to a recently developed extension of the SRPA, where a subtraction procedure is applied. The DRPA provides results in good agreeement with the experimental energies, with the exception of those low--lying states that have a dominant two particle--two hole nature. Abstract

A Hipertensão Pulmonar Tromboembólica Crônica (HPTEC) é uma enfermidade grave e debilitante, a qual gera sequelas que impactam diretamente na qualidade e sobrevida de seus portadores. Causada por oclusão parcial do leito arterial da vasculatura pulmonar, êmbolos hemáticos e travas fibróticas geram um aumento progressivo da Resistência Vascular Pulmonar (RVP) e Pressão Média de Artéria Pulmonar (PmAP). Ademais, acredita-se que o hiperfluxo dessas regiões possam desencadear uma disfunção endotelial, com consequente remodelamento vascular. Como resultante dessas alterações hemodinâmicas, surge a Hipertensão pulmonar e insuficiência de Ventrículo Direito, sendo esta a principal causa de morbimortalidade associada a doença. Desde que diagnosticados precocemente e referenciados a centros especializados, seus portadores estão sujeitos a cura através da Tromboendarterectomia Pulmonar. Aos pacientes com risco proibitivo a cirurgia, outras alternativas como a Angioplastia Pulmonar por Balão estão disponíveis, além do seu tratamento farmacológico. Novos estudos são necessários para solidificar as evidencias e refinar o tratamento de portadores de HPTEC. Esta revisão de literatura tem por objetivo discutir acerca da fisiopatogenia, aspectos clínicos, propedêutica e modalidades terapêuticas disponíveis para HPTEC.

Abstract

Recent excavations in the necropolis of Ornavasso (VB), in north-eastern Piedmont, allowed: a) to identify the exact location of the digs carried out during the 19th century in the sites known as San Bernardo and In Persona; b) to recognize the excavation technique adopted by Enrico Bianchetti in the past, and c) to better understand the stratigraphy of the sites. The discovery of some new graves dating to a later phase testify that the funerary area of In Persona had been used for a longer period than previously thought. The burial ground of San Bernardo shows a peculiar feature which is not attested at In Persona: all the surface, indeed, yielded fragments of terracotta tiles which suggest the nearby presence of later tombs made of tiles or perhaps of a dwelling of some sort.

Abstract

The safety of minimally invasive procedures during COVID pandemic remains hotly debated, especially in a country, like Italy, where minimally invasive techniques have progressively and pervasively entered clinical practice, in both the hepatobiliary and pancreatic community. A nationwide snapshot of the management of HPB minimally invasive surgery activity during COVID-19 pandemic is provided: a survey was developed and conducted within AICEP (Italian Association of HepatoBilioPancreatic Surgeons) with the final aim of conveying the experience, knowledge, and opinions into a unitary report enabling more efficient crisis management. Results from the survey (81 respondents) show that, in Italian hospitals, minimally invasive surgery maintains its role despite the COVID-19 pandemic, with the registered reduction of cases being proportional to the overall reduction of the HPB surgical activity. Respondents agree that the switch from minimally invasive to open technique can be considered as a valid option for cases with a high technical complexity. Several issues merit specific attention: screening for virus positivity should be universally performed; only expert surgical teams should operate on positive patients and specific technical measures to lower the biological risk of contamination during surgery must be followed. Future studies specifically designed to establish the true risks in minimally invasive surgery are suggested. Abstract

Nel febbraio del 2017 un giovane di Turbigo, ha rinvenuto grazie a una serie di circostanze fortuite, una spada in bronzo. La spada è stata raccolta integra e in ottimo stato di conservazione, ad eccezione di una piccolissima porzione della punta già spezzata in antico. Questo contributo descrive le circostanze di rinvenimento, il tipo e la cronologia della spada e propone un suo inquadramento nel contesto dell'età del Bronzo media e recente in Italia nord occidentale. Nella seconda parte, l'articolo discute i possibili scenari interpretativi alla luce del dibattito recente sul tema delle armi "nei fiumi" in archeologia e in antropologia.

Abstract

The excitation of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in the 68Ni nucleus, above the neutron emission threshold, via an isoscalar probe has been observed for the first time. The excitation has been produced in reactions where a 68Ni beam, obtained by the fragmentation of a 70Zn primary beam at INFN-LNS, impinged on a 12C target. The γ-ray decay was detected using the CsI(Tl) detectors of the CHIMERA multidetector sphere. The 68Ni isotope as well as other heavy ion fragments were detected using the FARCOS array. The population of the PDR was evidenced by comparing the detected γ-ray energy spectra with statistical code calculations. The isotopic resolution of the detection system allows also to directly compare neutron decay channels with the 68Ni channel, better evidencing the PDR decay response function. This comparison allows also the extraction of the PDR cross section and the relative γ-ray angular distribution. The measured γ-ray angular distribution confirms the E1 character of the transition. The γ decay cross section for the excitation of the PDR was measured to be 0.32 mb with a 18% of statistical error. Keywords: Pygmy Dipole Resonance, Unstable nuclei, Isoscalar probe

Abstract

The low-lying dipole strength in the Zr-90,Zr-94 nuclei was investigated via (p, p'gamma) at 80 MeV and (alpha, alpha'gamma) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the gamma-decay. For Zr-94 these are the first data for both reactions and for Zr-90 these are the first data with (p, p'gamma) and the first ones at high resolution for (alpha, alpha'gamma). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (gamma, gamma') data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes. DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1(-) states in Zr-90,Zr-94. The (p, p'gamma) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (alpha, alpha'gamma) data. The isoscalar strength for Zr-90 was found to exhaust 20 +/- 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of Zr-94, a strength of 9 +/- 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV. Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (alpha, alpha'gamma). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1(-) states below the particle binding energy. We give an account of the main achievements of the scientific career of Andrea Vitturi so far, that have recently been discussed during the workshop “Theoretical Nuclear Physics in Padova” on the occasion of his retirement from full professor at the University of Padova. He has oftentimes been the driving force behind numerous contributions to nuclear structure and nuclear reactions that are here reviewed: giant resonances, pairing correlations, collective modes, algebraic models, inelastic excitations, electromagnetic response, break-up and transfer reactions, coupledchannel formalism, clustering, sub- barrier fusion processes, etc. Among these topics several inspirational works and ideas can be found that we would like to highlight.

Abstract

We present a short review of the properties of the so-called Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) which can be studied with both isovector and isoscalar probes. This is possible due to the particular property of this new mode where the isoscalar and isovector characters are mixed. The use of both probes unveils new features which otherwise will remain hidden. It is of paramount importance the use of a proper description of these modes, taking into account their main features, in order to have a good description of the experimental data.

Abstract

Background: Patients with COVID-19 can develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which is associated with high mortality. The aim of this study was to examine the functional and morphological features of COVID-19-associated ARDS and to compare these with the characteristics of ARDS unrelated to COVID-19. Methods: This prospective observational study was done at seven hospitals in Italy. We enrolled consecutive, mechanically ventilated patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and who met Berlin criteria for ARDS, who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) between March 9 and March 22, 2020. All patients were sedated, paralysed, and ventilated in volume-control mode with standard ICU ventilators. Static respiratory system compliance, the ratio of partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fractional concentration of oxygen in inspired air, ventilatory ratio (a surrogate of dead space), and D-dimer concentrations were measured within 24 h of ICU admission. Lung CT scans and CT angiograms were done when clinically indicated. A dataset for ARDS unrelated to COVID-19 was created from previous ARDS studies. Survival to day 28 was assessed. Findings: Between March 9 and March 22, 2020, 301 patients with COVID-19 met the Berlin criteria for ARDS at participating hospitals. Median static compliance was 41 mL/cm H2O (33-52), which was 28% higher than in the cohort of patients with ARDS unrelated to COVID-19 (32 mL/cm H2O [25-43]; p<0·0001). 17 (6%) of 297 patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS had compliances greater than the 95th percentile of the classical ARDS cohort. Total lung weight did not differ between the two cohorts. CT pulmonary angiograms (obtained in 23 [8%] patients with COVID-19-related ARDS) showed that 15 (94%) of 16 patients with D-dimer concentrations greater than the median had bilateral areas of hypoperfusion, consistent with thromboembolic disease. Abstract

The safety of minimally invasive procedures during COVID pandemic remains hotly debated, especially in a country, like Italy, where minimally invasive techniques have progressively and pervasively entered clinical practice, in both the hepatobiliary and pancreatic community. A nationwide snapshot of the management of HPB minimally invasive surgery activity during COVID-19 pandemic is provided: a survey was developed and conducted within AICEP (Italian Association of HepatoBilioPancreatic Surgeons) with the final aim of conveying the experience, knowledge, and opinions into a unitary report enabling more efficient crisis management. Results from the survey (81 respondents) show that, in Italian hospitals, minimally invasive surgery maintains its role despite the COVID-19 pandemic, with the registered reduction of cases being proportional to the overall reduction of the HPB surgical activity. Respondents agree that the switch from minimally invasive to open technique can be considered as a valid option for cases with a high technical complexity. Several issues merit specific attention: screening for virus positivity should be universally performed; only expert surgical teams should operate on positive patients and specific technical measures to lower the biological risk of contamination during surgery must be followed. Future studies specifically designed to establish the true risks in minimally invasive surgery are suggested. Furthermore, a standard and univocal process of prioritization of patients from Regional Healthcare Systems is advisable.

Abstract

Introduction: Epidural analgesia is an effective technique for postoperative pain relief. Our aim in this retrospective study was to assess the postoperative pain control and complications relating to epidural technique in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP). Material and methods: A retrospective analysis of 193 patients who underwent LRP, in which epidural analgesia was the postoperative pain approach, was performed. The procedure is generally performed under combined anesthesia. Data collected was postoperative pain data; appearance of neurological disorders (Bromage scale was used for motor weakness assessment); data related to the epidural technique and possible difficulties when performing it; data on epidural infusion; catheter-related complications; hospital stay, postoperative complications, and outcome. Results: Firstly, average VAS at rest was 1.2 ± 1.6; and upon movement, average VAS was 1.9 ± 1.8 during the hospital stay. Secondly, complications related to epidural technique appeared in 37 % of patients. There were 3 cases of hematic puncture; 3 accidental catheter disconnections; 1 dural puncture, and 1 subdural block. As for neurological secondary effects of local anesthetics in the epidural technique, 56 patients (30.1 %) presented with motor block of one or both lower extremities after surgery, and 5 (2.7 %) with paresthesia. Statistical analysis showed that motor weakness was not related to age, weight, type of local anesthetic used, infusion rate, level of epidural puncture nor length of catheter within the epidural space (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Postoperative epidural analgesia offers excellent analgesic quality but it can be associated with several complications secondary to the use of local anesthetics, which could disagree with the terms of Fast-track surgery. New techniques like the TAP block could offer the same analgesic quality, without the epidural´s technique potential complications. RESUMEN Objetivos: La analgesia epidural es una técnica eficaz para el control del dolor postoperatorio. Nuestro objetivo en este estudio retrospectivo fue evaluar el control del dolor postoperatorio mediante la escala visual analógica del dolor (EVA) y las complicaciones relacionadas con la técnica epidural, en la prostatectomía radical laparoscópica (PRL). Material y métodos: Llevamos a cabo un análisis retrospectivo de 193 pacientes sometidos a PRL, en los que se realizó la técnica epidural analgésica para el control del dolor postoperatorio. El procedimiento se hizo bajo una anestesia combinada. Registramos los datos relacionados con el dolor postoperatorio; la aparición de sintomatología neurológica (la escala de Bromage se utilizó para evaluar la debilidad motora); datos relacionados con la técnica epidural y posibles dificultades al realizarla; datos sobre la infusión epidural, como tipo de anestésico local utilizado; complicaciones relacionadas con el catéter y complicaciones postoperatorias asociadas al mismo, estancia hospitalaria y resultado. Resultados: En primer lugar, durante la estancia hospitalaria de los pacientes, el EVA promedio en reposo fue 1,2 ± 1,6; y durante el movimiento, el EVA promedio fue de 1,9 ± 1,8. En segundo lugar, las complicaciones relacionadas con la técnica epidural aparecieron en el 37 % de los pacientes. Hubo 3 casos de punción hemática; 3 desconexiones accidentales del catéter, 1 punción dural y 1 bloqueo subdural. En cuanto a las complicaciones neurológicas debidas a los efectos secundarios de los anestésicos locales en la técnica epidural, 56 (30,1 %) pacientes presentaron bloqueo motor de una o ambas extremidades inferiores después de la cirugía y 5 (2,7 %) refirieron parestesias. No hubo ninguna complicación neurológica que persistiese tras el alta hospitalaria. El análisis estadístico mostró que la debilidad motora no estaba relacionada con la edad, el peso, el tipo de anestésico local utilizado, la velocidad de infusión, el nivel de punción epidural ni la longitud del catéter en el espacio epidural (p > 0,05). Conclusión: La analgesia epidural postoperatoria ofrece una excelente calidad analgésica, pero puede estar asociada a varias complicaciones secundarias al uso de anestésicos locales, lo que podría estar en contraposición con las tendencias actuales de cirugía fastrack. Las nuevas técnicas emergentes podrían ofrecer la misma calidad analgésica evitando las potenciales complicaciones de la técnica epidural.
