Séance : Bien-être animal; International audience; Animal behaviour is very sensitive to any external disturbance or change in the animal internal state. We sought to predict and classify a wide range of health, stress and physiological states from daily activity of dairy cow. We had six datasets (total, 122,000 cows*days). The caretakers noted the condition of the cows: illness, oestrus, calving, disturbances (handling, mixing. Cows were equipped with sensors to estimate the duration of activities - eating, resting, in the alleys - from which the activity level was calculated. We modelled the rhythm of activity by the Fourier transform (Harmonics 0 and 1). If the difference between the models obtained during 2 series of 24 h is higher than a certain threshold, there is a strong chance that a particular event has occurred: illness, stress, heat, farrowing. The change takes place before the caretakers spot the event. Next, we applied random forest to attributes describing the 24 h activity series (minimum, maximum, average, autocorrelations...). We correctly classify 99% of the control series (= very rare false positive) and in an episode surrounding a disease or a reproductive event, the probability of correctly classifying at least one series varies from 94 to 100%. Machine learning applied to time series seems therefore a very powerful tool to analyse the behaviour of animals and diagnose its internal state.; Le comportement d’un individu est très sensible à toute perturbation extérieure ou modification de l’état interne. Nous avons cherché à prédire et à classer un large éventail d'états de santé, de stress et d'états physiologiques à partir de l'activité quotidienne de vaches laitières. Nous disposions de six jeux de données (au total 122 000 vaches*jours). Les soigneurs notaient l'état des vaches : maladie, oestrus, vêlage, perturbations (manipulations, mélange). Les vaches étaient équipées de capteurs permettant d’estimer la durée des activités - manger, se reposer, dans les couloirs – à partir desquelles était calculé le niveau d’activité. Nous avons modélisé le rythme d’activité par des transformées de Fourier (Harmoniques 0 et 1). Si l’écart entre les modèles obtenus au cours de 2 séries de 24 h est supérieur à un certain seuil, il y a de fortes chances qu’un événement particulier soit survenu : maladie, stress, chaleurs, mise-bas. Le changement s’opère avant que les soigneurs repèrent l’évènement. Ensuite, nous avons appliqué le random forest à des attributs décrivant les séries d’activité de 24 h (minimum, maximum, moyenne, autocorrélations…). Nous classons correctement 99% des séries témoins (= quasiment pas de fausse alertes) et dans un épisode qui entoure une maladie ou un événement reproductif, la probabilité de classer correctement au moins une série varie de 94 à 100%. L'apprentissage automatique appliqué à des séries temporelles semble donc un outil très puissant pour analyser le comportement des animaux et diagnostiquer son état interne.

International audience; We collected data on the behaviour of dairy cows in barns, clinical signs of diseases as well as events that may stress or agitate the cows. A Real-Time Locating System gives the position of individual cows every second. The position of the cow is determined by triangulation based on radio waves emitted by a tag fixed on each cow neck collar and captured by antennas in the barn. The cow's activity is inferred from its position: 'eating' if the cow is positioned at the feeding table, 'resting' if the cow is in a resting area (typically cubicles), else 'in alleys'. We aggregated this information to get the time spent in each activity per hour. We also calculated the activity level of the cow for each hour of the day by attributing a weight to the time spent in each activity. For each cow and day, we collected information on health events or other events that may affect behaviour. There were 11 types of events. Six events were linked to health: lameness; mastitis; LPS (i.e. administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the mammary gland, an experimental treatment to induce udder inflammation); subacute ruminal acidosis; other diseases (such as colic, diarrhoea, ketosis, milk fever or other infectious diseases); and accidents (such as retained placenta or vaginal laceration). Two events were linked to reproduction: oestrus and calving. Three events were stress events: animal mixing, disturbance (i.e. mild intervention on animals such as late feeding, alarm test) and marginal management changes (ration changes, fill bed). In addition, a Boolean sums up whether this hour was considered as normal or not. Data contain four datasets. It consists of univariate time series. Each time series corresponds to the hourly activity level of a cow. Datasets 1 and 2 are from the INRAE Herbipôle experimental farm and include data from experiments; datasets 3 and 4 are from commercial farms. They contain data on respectively 28, 28, 30 and 300 cows monitored for 6 months, 2 months, 40 days and one year. The data can be used to study the links between health, reproduction events and stress on the one hand and cow behaviour on the other hand. More specifically, it can be used to build and test tools for an earlier detection of health and disturbances, with a view to inform caretakers so that corrective actions can be rapidly put in place.

International audience; Chez les ruminants d'élevage, l'allaitement artificiel est fréquent et place l'homme en situation de substitut maternel, notamment par l'apprentissage au distributeur de lait reconstitué. La présente étude s'intéresse à la variabilité phénotypique, notamment en terme de vigueur, réactiv­ité et affinité pour l'humain et sa relation avec la croissance. 567 agneaux de race Romane ont été élevés artificiellement dans des conditions standardisées (bâtiment, animaliers, et alimenta­tion identiques) à partir de 24h d'âge jusqu'au sevrage (poids vif entre 12 et 13 kg). Les agneaux ont été précocement phénotypés par leur poids de naissance et plusieurs indicateurs mesurés à l'arrivée en nurserie; température, vigueur, acceptation du premier biberon de lait. 202 agneaux, choisis aléatoirement, ont également été caractérisés par leur réactivité à l'isolement en environ­nement nouveau et à un humain inconnu à 21 jours d'âge. La réponse à l'isolement et la réponse à l'homme ont été obtenues en agrégeant par ACP les comportements observés dans chaque situation. Aucune corrélation n'a été observée entre les deux réponses (rs=0.04). Les variations individuelles de Gain Moyen Quotidien de poids (GMQ) jusqu'au sevrage ont été analysées par régression multiple avec sélection stepwise afin d'identifler les facteurs les plus importants im­pliqués. Parmi les caractéristiques précoces des agneaux, avoir un plus faible poids de naissance (P< 0.001), être une femelle (P< 0.01), avoir un plus faible indice de vigueur (P< 0.001) et un comportement de succion du biberon peu marqué (P=0.01) étaient associés à un plus faible GMQ. Une plus forte attraction pour l'homme (P< 0.001) et une moindre réactivité en isolement (P< 0.05) sont également associées à de plus faibles GMQ. Cette étude observationnelle confirme, non seulement l'importance des caractéristiques individuelles précoces mais suggère aussi que la réactivité comportementale et le lien de dépendance à l'hornme pourraient être prédicteurs de l'adaptation (ici la croissance) des animaux en allaitement artificiel.

International audience; In France, during the three last decades farmers built numerous small dams to have alternative resources for irrigation. In water deficit situations, one major question of the debate is the cumulative effect at watershed and river basin levels of small water dams on stream flows during the low flow period. This paper presents a new modelling framework to simulate hydrology and cumulative effect of small agricultural dams at river basin level that was implemented in the multi-agent modelling and simulation MAELIA platform. This modelling framework is based on the distinction of four types of small dams: connected to groundwater; disconnected from rivers; connected to the main stream of the sub-watershed; connected to secondary streams of the sub-watershed. It allows to simulate dynamic filling, discharge and emptying of each agricultural dam. It is simple and robust enough to represent individual behaviour of thousands of dams at regional scale. When implemented in integrated modelling platform like MAELIA, it allows to explore the potential cumulative impact of agricultural dams on the river and stream flow. First simulations show no significant impacts on the case-study river flow that is strongly determined by water release from big public dams. However, they show potential significant impacts in watersheds where the flow of the main stream is not influenced by release of public dams.
