Abstract

College freshmen are special populations facing great challenges in adapting to the brand new environment, and their lifestyle and emotional states are worthy of attention. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, their screen time and prevalence of negative emotions were significantly increased, but few studies have focused on such situation of college freshmen and illustrated relevant mechanisms. Thus, based on a sample of Chinese college freshmen during the COVID-19 pandemic, the current study aimed to investigate the association between their screen time and negative emotions (depression, anxiety and stress), and further explore the mediating effects of sleep quality. Data from 2,014 college freshmen was analyzed. The screen time was self-reported by participants using predesigned questionnaires. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Chinese Version of Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) were used to assess sleep quality and emotional states, respectively. The mediation analysis was conducted to examine the meditation effect. Results indicated that participants with negative emotions tended to have longer daily screen time and worse sleep quality, sleep quality partially mediated the association between screen time and negative emotions.The critical role of sleep quality and related intervention measures should be recognized and implemented. 34. Smoking, dietary factors and major age-related eye disorders: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Abstract

BackgroundThere is accumulating evidence of the associations between age-related eye diseases (AREDs) and smoking or dietary factors. We aimed to provide an umbrella review of the published literature pertaining to smoking or dietary intake as risk factors for major AREDs including cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy.MethodsWe searched for pertinent systematic reviews or meta-analyses in PubMed and Web of Science until 16 April 2022. We reperformed the meta-analysis of each association using random effects models. The heterogeneity and 95% prediction interval were calculated. The presence of small-study effect or excess significance bias was also assessed.ResultsIn total, 64 associations from 25 meta-analyses and 41 associations from 10 qualitative systematic reviews were evaluated. There was convincing (class I) evidence for only one association, namely current smoking and cataract. Two factors had highly suggestive (class II) evidence, namely ever smoking associated with cataract and fish consumption associated with AMD. We also found suggestive (class III) evidence for associations between the dietary intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C and the risk of cataract.ConclusionsSmoking as a risk factor for cataract was the most robust association we identified. We also identified several dietary elements associated with AREDs. Large prospective studies are warranted to further examine the associations discussed in this review.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42022339082.

35. Risk factors for myopia among children and adolescents: an umbrella review of published meta-analyses and systematic reviews

Abstract

AimsTo identify potential risk factors for myopia in children and adolescents and assess the credibility of each evidence, providing reference for the development of myopia prevention strategies.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Web of Science and Embase databases from inception to April 2022 to find systematic reviews or meta-analyses investigating the relationship between potential risk factors and myopia, and conducted an umbrella review. We recalculated the pooled effect sizes and 95% CIs of each potential risk factor through random-effects model, and reported its 95% prediction interval and between-study heterogeneity. Small-study effect and excess of significance bias were assessed to reveal potential publication bias.ResultsTwelve publications were included in this umbrella review, including eight meta-analyses and four qualitative systematic reviews. Twenty-two factors were identified, of which 16 were analysed quantitatively. Ten factors showed statistically significant association with myopia. Myopia in one or two parents and per additional hour of time spend outdoors per week were rated as highly suggestive evidence. Near work and gender were evaluated as suggestive evidence. The other five factors are weak evidence.ConclusionsWe found several risk factors for myopia with different levels of evidence, of which parental myopia presented the strongest association with myopia in children and adolescents. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the association between potential risk factors and myopia among children and adolescents and are important for informing parenting, education, clinical practice guidelines and public health policy.PROSPERO TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBERCRD42022333053.

45. Unhealthy Lifestyles and Retinal Vessel Calibers among Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Abstract

The retinal vessel caliber (RVC) is an important biomarker of cardiovascular diseases, which can be semi-automatically measured by fundus photography. This review investigated the associations between the RVCs and the life styles of early life, such as physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), dietary and sleep, by summarizing the findings from studies on children and adolescents. Two databases (Medline and Embase) were searched from their inception to 30 June 2022. The selected studies were literatures on observational designs, fundus photographs, retinal vessels and lifestyles of children or adolescents. Correlation coefficients of unhealthy life styles and RVCs were transformed to Fisher's z-scores, and the random-effects model was applied to pool data. A total of 18 observational studies were selected; the lifestyles accessed include 9 studies for PA and SB, 8 studies for dietary and 1 study for sleep. The meta-analysis on the correlation coefficients of regression models found the high level of SB (qualified by screen time, ST) was associated the narrower central retinal arteriolar equivalent (CRAE) among children (r = −0.043, 95% confidence intervals [CI] −0.078 to −0.009). By comparing the first and fourth quartiles of PA, the meta-analysis showed that more indoor PA was associated with smaller venular calibers and more outdoor PA was associated with wider CRAE (r = 0.88, 95%CI −3.33 to 0). Unhealthy lifestyles might be harmful on the retinal microcirculation among children and adolescents but their health effect seems not to be as significant as those in adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A rare 3D porous chiral polyoxoniobate framework, [Cu(en)2(H2O)]2{[Cu(en)]4[Cu(en)2]5 {[Cu(en)2KNb24O72H10]2}·6en·70H2O(1) (en = ethylenediamine) based on two types of isomeric {Cu(en)2KNb24O72H10} clusters (α-CuKNb24 and β-CuKNb24) has been synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. Interestingly, the α-CuKNb24 and β-CuKNb24 clusters are connected by cupric complexes to form chiral helical pillars with left-handedness (L-α-CuKNb24) and right-handedness (R-β-CuKNb24). To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first polyoxometalate-based MOF with a 4-connected neb-type topology structure within polyoxometalate chemistry. This compound also exhibits proton conduction and strong water vapor adsorption properties.

Abstract

A series of POM-based all-inorganic open frameworks, H9[Ln9W8(μ4-O)12(μ2-O)24(H2O)24](SiW12O40)3·60H2O (1-Ln, Ln = La, Pr and Nd), have been fabricated and structurally characterized for the first time. The unique architectures are constructed from nanoscale four-shell Ln@W8@Ln8@(SiW12)6 clusters. Additionally, the porous nature of the frameworks has also been investigated.

Two unique heterometallic cluster organic frameworks, [Cd4 MnIII 4 MnII 6 (Tri)4 (CH3 COO)14 (μ4 -O)2 (μ3 -O)2 (H2 O)2 ] Cd(H2 O)2 ⋅9 H2 O (1) and Cu[Cd5 Cu6 (Tri)4 (CH3 COO)9 (H2 O)4 ]2 (CH3 COO)3 ⋅24 H2 O (2) (H3 Tri=2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-(pyridine-4-yl)-1,3-propanediol), have been successfully prepared by employing a bifunctional tripodal alcohol ligand as a structure-directing agent. Crystal structure analyses reveal that 1 represents a rare example of frameworks constructed from Cd-Mn heterometallic chains, and 2 is the first heterometallic MOF based on highest-nuclear Cd-Cu heterometallic cluster building blocks. Furthermore, the magnetic properties and gas adsorption abilities of 1 and 2 were systematically studied.
