Abstract Polymer-based pure organic room-temperature phosphorescent materials have tremendous advantages in applications owing to their low cost, vast resources, and easy processability. However, designing polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials with large Stokes shifts as key requirements in biocompatibility and environmental-friendly performance is still challenging. By generating charge transfer states as the gangplank from singlet excited states to triplet states in doped organic molecules, we find a host molecule (pyrrolidone) that affords charge transfer with doped guest molecules, and excellent polymer-based organic room-temperature phosphorescent materials can be easily fabricated when polymerizing the host molecule. By adding polyaromatic hydrocarbon molecules as electron-donor in polyvinylpyrrolidone, efficient intersystem crossing and tunable phosphorescent from green to near-infrared can be achieved, with maximum phosphorescence wavelength and lifetime up to 757 nm and 3850 ms, respectively. These doped polyvinylpyrrolidone materials have good photoactivation properties, recyclability, advanced data encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. This reported design strategy paves the way for the design of polyvinylpyrrolidone-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials.

ObjectiveThe study aims to analyze the clinical characteristics of acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children aged 0–17 years with the Omicron variant, and summarize the persistent symptoms or new-onset clinical manifestations from 4 to 12 weeks after acute COVID. Explore the association between the vaccination status and SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody levels post infection among preschool-aged children. The comprehensive study systematically describes the clinical characteristics of children infected with SARS-CoV-2, providing a foundation for diagnosis and evaluating long-term COVID in pediatric populations.MethodsThe study enrolled children who were referred to the Children's Hospital, Capital Institute of Pediatrics, (Beijing, China) from January 10, 2023 to March 31, 2023. Participants were classified as infant and toddlers, preschool, school-age, and adolescent groups. Children or their legal guardians completed survey questionnaires to provide information of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection history, as well as clinical presentation during the acute phase and long-term symptoms from 4 to 12 weeks following infection. Furthermore, serum samples were collected from children with confirmed history of SARS-CoV-2 infection for serological testing of neutralizing antibodies.ResultsThe study recruited a total of 2,001 children aged 0–17 years who had previously tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 through nucleic acid or antigen testing. Fever emerged as the predominant clinical manifestation in 1,902 (95.1%) individuals with body temperature ranging from 37.3 to 40.0°C. Respiratory symptoms were identified as secondary clinical manifestations, with cough being the most common symptom in 777 (38.8%) children, followed by sore throat (22.1%), nasal congestion (17.8%), and runnning nose (17.2%). Fatigue (21.6%), headache (19.8%) and muscle-joint pain (13.5%) were frequently reported systemic symptoms in children. The proportion of children with symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection varied across age groups. 1,100 (55.0%) children experienced persistent symptoms from 4 to 12 weeks post the acute phase of infection. Trouble concentrating (22.1%), cough (22.1%), and fatigue (12.1%) were frequently reported across age groups in the extended period. A limited number of children exhibited cardiovascular symptoms with chest tightness, tachycardia, and chest pain reported by 3.5%, 2.5%, and 1.8% of children, respectively. Among 472 children aged 3–5 years, 208 children had received two doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine at least 6 months prior to infection, and no association was found between the incidence of long-term COVID and pre-infection vaccination statuses among the 3–5 years age groups (χ2 = 1.136, P = 0.286).ConclusionsIn children aged 0–17 years infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, fever was the primary clinical manifestation in the acute phase, followed by respiratory symptoms, systemic non-specific and digestive presentations. In particular, respiratory and digestive system symptoms were more frequent in children aged above 6 years. Regarding the long-term symptoms from 4 to 12 weeks post-infection, the most common presentations were concentrating difficulty, cough, and fatigue. The incidence of persistent symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 did not exhibit a significant correlation with vaccination status, which was attributed to the waning efficacy of the vaccine-induced humoral immune response after 6 months.

In the window function spectrum of the low signal-to-noise ratio photon Doppler signal after the short-time Fourier transform, the weak beat frequency cannot be obtained by extracting the maximum amplitude spectrum frequency of each window because the amplitude of the noise spectrum exceeds the weak beat frequency. In this article, the value of the beat frequency is first estimated by the Kalman filter. Then, a multiple analytical bandpass filter is constructed to refine the spectrum of the high noise signal with the value of the beat frequency estimate as the spectrum band center. This technique extracts only the beat frequencies from the narrowband refinement spectrum by removing the interference spectrum band range. We use this technique to process the photon Doppler signals from the tiny high-speed flying fragments explosion experiment. After data processing, the beat frequency value heavily affected by high-frequency noise can reduce the error by up to 64.9%. The beat frequency value of the low noise signal can be accurate to 106 Hz, equivalent to 0.775 m/s after velocity demodulation. This method fully considers the positioning and protection of the beat frequency characteristics. It makes weak beat frequencies more obvious in the refined narrowband spectrum without changing the signal amplitude. This article describes a method for extracting the weak beat frequency of the photon Doppler signal or a signal optimization algorithm for needing high-precision beat frequencies in a test environment.

ObjectiveAnalysis of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody and neutralizing antibody levels following SARS-CoV-2 infection in children aged 3-11 years, comparing those who had received the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to those who were unvaccinated prior to infection, provides evidence for public health centers in formulating vaccination strategies and control policies.MethodsA study was conducted on children who visited the Children’s Hospital, Capital Institute of Pediatrics from January 10, 2023 to March 31, 2023 (Beijing, China). Participants or their guardians completed a survey questionnaire providing information about their SARS-CoV-2 infection history and vaccination status. Serum samples were collected for testing of SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) and neutralizing antibodies (Nabs), which were performed using chemiluminescence immunoassay.ResultsThe study included 1,504 children aged 3-11 years with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection history. Among the 333 unvaccinated children, the serum SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody level was median 2.30 (IQR, 1.27-3.99). However, children received one dose (78 cases) and two doses (1093 cases) of the inactivated vaccine prior to infection showed significantly higher SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody levels, with values of median 10.11 (IQR, 8.66-10.93) and median 10.58 (IQR, 9.79-11.07), respectively. As to the unvaccinated children, 70.3% (234/333) were negative for SARS-CoV-2 Nabs, which were less than 6.00AU/ml. The remaining 29.7% (99/333) showed relatively low levels of Nabs, ranging from 6.00 to 50.00AU/ml. In contrast, for children who had received two doses of vaccine prior to infection, an overwhelming 99.3% (1086/1093) exhibited high levels of Nas in the range of 100.00-120.00 AU/ml. Remarkably, these elevated Nab levels persisted for at least a period of 3 months post-infection in children who had received two doses of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine prior to infection, regardless of age or sex and vaccine manufacturer.ConclusionThe administration of two doses of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine prior to infection has been shown to significantly enhance humoral immunity following SARS-CoV-2 infection in pediatric populations, producing adequate Nabs that persist at elevated levels for up to 3 months post-infection. For unvaccinated children who displayed weak humoral immunity following a primary natural infection, timely vaccination is recommended to bolster their immunization protection. The findings underscore the importance of vaccination in strengthening immune responses and protecting pediatric populations against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The purpose of this study is to compare audit effectiveness and audit efficiency between companies that have integrated auditing of internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) and financial statements and companies that have separate auditing. We analyse a sample of Chinese public companies that disclosed their ICFR audit reports from 2011 to 2015. Using the full sample, sub-samples, and a propensity score matching (PSM) sample, we consistently find that companies having integrated auditing exhibit higher financial reporting quality measured by excess non-operating income. The findings regarding audit efficiency are mixed, with limited evidence indicating that an integrated auditor is potentially able to complete two audits without further delay. Overall, our results seem to suggest that integrated auditing is superior to separate auditing in that it enhances audit effectiveness and might improve audit efficiency. Such superiority might be due to knowledge spillover when two related audit services are jointly provided.

In this work, an effective flame retardant consisting of nanoscale zinc oxide doped on the surface of hexagonal lamellar magnesium hydrate (ZO@MH) has been successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal process. Approximately 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570) is chosen as a modifier of ZO@MH for the purpose of enhancing the interfacial interaction between ZO@MH and the polypropylene (PP) matrix and reducing the agglomeration of ZO@MH. Afterwards, ZO@MH and KH-570 modified ZO@MH (KZO@MH) filled PP (PP/ZO@MH and PP/KZO@MH) composites are respectively prepared via the melt blending method. The flame retardant and smoke suppression properties of PP/ZO@MH and PP/KZO@MH composites are estimated by a cone calorimetry test (CCT). The peak value of the heat release rate of the PP/40KZO@MH composite is 327.0 kW/m2, which is 6.1% and 31.2% lower than that of the PP/40ZO@MH and PP/40MH composites, respectively. The lowest peak values of CO and CO2 production, 0.008 and 0.62 g/s, also appeared in the PP/40KZO@MH composite, which are 11.1% and 10.1% lower than those of the PP/40ZO@MH composite. Analysis of char residues indicates that nanoscale ZO and modification of KH-570 improve the amount and quality of char residues, which should be the main reason for the good flame retardant and smoke suppression properties of KZO@MH. Impact strength and nominal strain at break results show that the PP matrix is toughened by ZO@MH rather than KZO@MH. Tensile properties and the quantitative interfacial interaction calculated by the Turcsányi equation both prove the reinforcement of KZO@MH on the PP matrix.

Maleic anhydride-modified homopolymerized polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and maleic anhydride-modified polyolefin elastomer (POE-g-MAH) were used as bulking agents to improve the poor processing and mechanical properties of highly filled composites due to high filler content. In this study, a series of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)/magnesium hydroxide (MH) composites were prepared by the melt blending method, and the effects of the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and rheological behavior of the composites were investigated. The addition of the compatibilizer decreased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of the composites, but they were all greater than 30.00%, which belonged to the flame retardant grade. Mechanical property tests showed that the addition of the compatibilizer significantly increased the tensile and impact strengths of the LLDPE/60MH (MH addition of 60 wt%) composites. Specifically, the addition of 5 wt% POE-g-MAH increased 154.07% and 415.47% compared to the LLDPE/60MH composites, respectively. The rotational rheology test showed that the addition of the compatibilizer could effectively improve the processing flow properties of the composites. However, due to the hydrocarbon structure of the compatibilizer, its flame retardant properties were adversely affected. This study provides a strategy that can improve the processing and mechanical properties of highly filled composites.

Abstract The diagnosis of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody‐associated vasculitis in first‐episode strokes is particularly challenging, especially in patients lacking features of systemic vasculitis. We present the case of a 71‐year‐old woman with positive myeloperoxidase antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies and negative proteinase 3 autoantibodies. The patient presented with 1 week history of pyramidal weakness in both upper and lower limbs, hyperreflexia, and clonus. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain demonstrated widespread bihemispheric cortical and deep white matter acute infarcts, which are consistent with features of stroke secondary to vasculitis. Myeloperoxidase antineutrophilic cytoplasmic autoantibody‐positive vasculitis diseases are more commonly associated with renal, pulmonary, and cutaneous manifestations; however, in our patient, the central nervous system features predominated. This case highlights the challenges of diagnosing primary central nervous system vasculitis, in this case, an atypical myeloperoxidase antineutrophilic cytoplasmic autoantibody‐positive disease without the classical disease course and clinical signs.

The poor processing and rheological properties of highly filled composites caused by the high loading of fillers can be improved with the use of maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene wax (PEWM) as compatibilizer and lubricant. In this study, two PEWMs with different molecular weights were synthesized by melt grafting, and their compositions and grafting degrees were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and acid-base titration. Subsequently, magnesium hydroxide (MH)/linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composites with 60 wt% of MH were prepared using polyethylene wax (PEW) and PEWM, respectively. The equilibrium torque and melt flow index tests indicate that the processability and fluidity of MH/MAPP/LLDPE composites are significantly improved with the addition of PEWM. The addition of PEWM with a lower molecular weight leads to a substantial reduction in viscosity. The mechanical properties are also increased. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) test and cone calorimeter test (CCT) show that both PEW and PEWM have adverse effects on flame retardancy. This study provides a strategy to simultaneously improve the processability and mechanical properties of highly filled composites.

A composite particle with layered double hydroxide (LDH) was deposited onto the surface of the Mg2B2O5 whisker (MBW) using a co-precipitation method. Subsequently, dodecyl dihydrogen phosphate (DDP) was grafted onto the surface of the LDH-coated MBW to synthesize an inorganic–organic hybrid (MBW@LDH–DDP). The MBW@LDH–DDP was incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) to fabricate a composite, and its curing behavior, fire properties, and mechanical properties were assessed. The results revealed that the cure index value of the EP/MBW@LDH–DDP composite was between ΔT* and ΔH*, indicating an excellent cured state. Moreover, it exhibited good flame-retarding performance (LOI: 32.5%; UL94: V-1 rating; flame retardancy index: 1.57). The improved fire safety was attributed to the barrier function of MBW, the presence of metallic oxides generated from LDH, and the catalytic dehydration of phosphorus oxoacids produced during the decomposition of DDP. The PO· radicals generated from DDP were capable of capturing HO· and H· radicals in the gaseous phase. Furthermore, the incorporation of MBW@LDH–DDP improved the mechanical properties of the EP. The results presented herein can be applied to developing a novel strategy for designing multifunctional flame retardants that can be used to decrease the fire risk of EP.

Abstract Background Chronic lymphocytic infiltration with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) is a neuro-inflammatory syndrome first described in 2010. It has a relationship with lymphoproliferative disorders that has not been fully elucidated. This case represents an unusual progression of CLIPPERS to Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-related lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG). The exact connection between CLIPPERS and LYG remains poorly understood. Case presentation We present a case of a 75-year-old man who was diagnosed with CLIPPERS with initial response to immunosuppression but later progressed to EBV-related LYG. EBV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was detected in his cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and repeat imaging revealed findings that were uncharacteristic for CLIPPERS; thereby prompting a brain biopsy which led to a diagnosis of EBV-related LYG. This case highlights the following learning points: 1) CLIPPERS cases are often part of a spectrum of lymphomatous disease, 2) CLIPPERS can be associated with EBV-related lymphoproliferative disorders such as LYG, and 3) EBV detection in CSF should prompt earlier consideration for brain biopsy in patients. Conclusions Our case highlights the difficulty in distinguishing CLIPPERS from other steroid-responsive conditions such as neoplastic and granulomatous diseases. Given the association of CLIPPERS with EBV-related LYG as demonstrated in this case, we recommend testing for EBV in CSF for all patients with suspected CLIPPERS. An early referral for brain biopsy and treatment with rituximab should be considered for patients with suspected CLIPPERS who test positive for EBV in their CSF.

A metal-free one-pot cascade process involving reduction of nitroarenes, cyclization, and sequential hydrogenation of imines with B2cat2 and water was developed to construct dihydroquinoxalinones and tetrahydroquinoxalines directly from readily available 2-nitroanilines or o-dinitrobenzenes with α-ketoesters and a-diketones. This strategy provides various dihydroquinoxalinones and tetrahydroquinoxalines in good to excellent yields and tolerance to many functional groups. Mechanism studies by control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that this cascade procedure involves the deoxygenative reduction of nitroarenes, the Maillard reaction, and hydrogenation to produce dihydroquinoxalinones and tetrahydroquinoxalines. This method aims to reduce the environmental impact while maintaining high yields and selectivity for both nitroarene reduction and the synthesis of dihydroquinoxalinones and tetrahydroquinoxalines. To alleviate the safety hazards associated with the use of epoxy resin (EP), a multifunctional filler was designed. This study firstly combines the superior mechanical properties of magnesium borate rods (MBR) with the excellent smoke suppression and flame-retardant characteristics of layered double hydroxide (LDH). H2PO4− intercalated LDH (LDHP) was coated on the MBR surface to obtain inorganic composite particles MBR@LDHP. Subsequently, MBR@LDHP was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APES) to obtain organic-inorganic composite particles MBR@LDHP-APES. Eventually, the hybrid particles were added to EP to prepare the composite materials. Thereafter, the morphology, composition, and structure of MBR@LDHP-APES were characterized utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated the successful preparation of MBR@LDHP-APES, after which we investigated the effects of MBR@LDHP-APES on the smoke suppression, flame retardancy, and mechanical characteristics of EP. As observed, the EP composites containing 7.5 wt% MBR@LDHP-APES exhibited superior smoke suppression and flame retardancy abilities. The limiting oxygen index reached 33.5%, which is 36.73% greater than pure EP, and the lowest values of total heat and smoke release were observed for the composite materials. In addition, the mechanical properties test revealed that MBR@LDHP-APES considerably enhanced the tensile strength as well as the flexural strength of the composites. Furthermore, mechanistic studies suggested that the barrier effect of MBR, endothermic decomposition of LDHP, and the synergistic effect of LDHP and APES contributed essentially to the smoke suppression and flame-retardant properties of the material. The findings of this research point to a potential method for enhancing the EP’s ability to suppress smoke and flames while enhancing its mechanical properties.
