The aim of this study was to verify the bacterial resistance profile and detect the presence of mecA gene in Staphylococcus spp. isolated from the nasal microbiota of domiciled dogs. For this purpose 100 nasal swabs from 100 domiciled dogs were collected from the central area of the city of Umuarama (PR), along with a questionnaire answered by their owners. After the isolation all Staphylococcus spp. isolates were submitted to the diffusion disc test by the Kirby-Bauer method, and only oxacillin-resistant samples were submitted to the PCR technique to search for the mecA gene and the results were then submitted to statistical analysis to verify possible risk variables. The 100 Staphylococcus spp. and coagulase negative, among which 41 isolates were resistant to oxacillin, no samples were positive for the mecA gene presence, however, 12 resistant to vancomycin were found. It can be concluded that the domiciled dogs are carriers of Staphylococcus spp. multiresistant, being these a possible source of human contamination.

Plastic surgeries are considered clean or potentially contaminated procedures. The incidence of infection in reduction mammoplasty is 1.1 to 22% and the main etiological agents are bacteria found on the skin and mucous membranes such as Staphylococcus aureus. Due to the increase in bacterial resistance with the widespread use of antibiotics, identify natural compounds with antibacterial action on postoperative surgery wounds are fundamental. Thus, the objective of this research was the identification of compounds and assessment of the antibacterial action of Copaifera spp. (copaiba) oil against standard strains and bacterial pathogens isolated from postoperative mammoplasty surgery. For this, four commercial copaiba oils (1, 2, 3 and 4) were submitted to a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. The in-vitro antimicrobial activity and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of oils on standard strains and clinical samples, as well as the disk antibiotics sensitivity and the synergistic effect of the oils and antibiotics, were assessed. A total of 72 compounds were identified, accounting for ~99% of the volatile constituents in the oils. Sesquiterpenes comprised 67.24– 90.11% of the components, with β-caryophyllene being the most common. Oils 1 and 2 were the most active on the S. aureus strain, with MIC similarto Oil 3, while Oil 4presented no activity. The same pattern was observed in the clinical samples. In addition, Oil 2 presented synergism when associated with amoxicillin. The synergistic effects of Copaiba oils may represent a source of therapeutic compounds against bacterial infections in surgical wound. Las cirugías plásticas se consideran procedimientos limpios o potencialmente contaminados. La incidencia de infección en la mamoplastia de reducción es del 1,1 al 22% y los principales agentes etiológicos son las bacterias presentes en la piel y mucosas como Staphylococcus aureus. Debido al aumento de la resistencia bacteriana con el uso generalizado de antibióticos, identificar compuestos naturales con acción antibacteriana sobre las heridas de la cirugía postoperatoria es fundamental. Así, el objetivo de esta investigación fue la identificación de compuestos y la evaluación de la acción antibacteriana de Copaifera spp. (copaiba) contra cepas estándar y patógenos bacterianos aislados de la cirugía de mamoplastia postoperatoria. Para ello, cuatro aceites de copaiba comerciales (1, 2, 3 y 4) se sometieron a un análisis de cromatografía de gases / espectrometría de masas. Se evaluó la actividad antimicrobiana in vitro y la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) de los aceites en cepas estándar y muestras clínicas, así como la sensibilidad a los antibióticos de disco y el efecto sinérgico de los aceites y antibióticos. Se identificaron un total de 72 compuestos, que representan ~ 99% de los constituyentes volátiles de los aceites. Los sesquiterpenos comprendieron entre el 67,24 y el 90,11% de los componentes, siendo el β-cariofileno el más común. Los aceites 1 y 2 fueron los más activos en la cepa de S. aureus, con CMI similar al aceite 3, mientras que el aceite 4 no presentó actividad. El mismo patrón se observó en las muestras clínicas. Además, Oil 2 presentó sinergismo cuando se asoció con amoxicilina. Los efectos sinérgicos de los aceites de Copaiba pueden representar una fuente de compuestos terapéuticos contra infecciones bacterianas en heridas quirúrgicas. A incidência de infecção na mamoplastia redutora é de 1,1 a 22% e os principais agentes etiológicos são bactérias presentes na pele e nas mucosas, como o Staphylococcus aureus. Devido ao aumento da resistência bacteriana com o uso generalizado de antibióticos, identificar compostos naturais com ação antibacteriana em feridas pós-operatórias é fundamental. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi a identificação de compostos e avaliação da ação antibacteriana do óleo de Copaifera spp. (copaíba) contra cepas padrão e patógenos bacterianos isolados do pós-operatório de cirurgia de mamoplastia. Para tanto, quatro óleos comerciais de copaíba (1, 2, 3 e 4) foram submetidos à análise por cromatografia gasosa / espectrometria de massa. A atividade antimicrobiana in vitro e a concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) de óleos em cepas padrão e amostras clínicas, bem como a sensibilidade a antibióticos em disco e o efeito sinérgico dos óleos e antibióticos, foram avaliados. Um total de 72 compostos foram identificados, representando ~ 99% dos constituintes voláteis dos óleos. Os sesquiterpenos representaram 67,24–90,11% dos componentes, sendo o β-cariofileno o mais comum. Os óleos 1 e 2 foram os mais ativos na cepa de S. aureus, com CIM semelhante ao óleo 3, enquanto o óleo 4 não apresentou atividade. O mesmo padrão foi observado nas amostras clínicas. Além disso, o óleo 2 apresentou sinergismo quando associado à amoxicilina. Os efeitos sinérgicos dos óleos de copaíba podem representar uma fonte de compostos terapêuticos contra infecções bacterianas em feridas cirúrgicas.

There are no studies that characterize the enteric nervous system (ENS) bats. The organization and density of myenteric neurons may vary according to the animal species, as well as the segment of the digestive tube considered. The nitric oxide is one of the key neurotransmitters present in the myenteric neurons, acting as a mediator in the smooth muscle relaxation. These neurons are evidenced by immunohistochemistry of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) or by NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry. In this sense, this study aimed to characterize the total neuronal population and subpopulation NADPH-d+ of the myenteric plexus present in the jejunum of the insectivore species Molossus rufus quantitatively. Five specimens were collected of M. rufus in a buffer area of the “Reserva Biológica das Perobas” in the microregion of Cianorte/PR. After the euthanasia, in a chamber saturated with isoflurane, segments were collected from the small intestine corresponding to the jejunum intended for two techniques for neuronal marking, Giemsa and NADPH-diaphorase, and a fragment to the histological technique of hematoxylin-eosin and Masson’s trichrome. All the procedures were approved by the “Comitê de Ética no Uso de Animais Unipar” (CEUA - protocol No. 34347/2017) and the “Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade” (ICMBio - protocol No. 60061-1) The histological sections allowed to highlight the location of the myenteric plexus between the longitudinal and circular layers of the muscular tunic. The myenteric plexus had an average of total neuronal population (neurons Giemsa+) of 279.23 neurons/mm2, being the nitrergic neurons (neurons NADPH-d+) represented 20.4% of this total population, with an average of 58.14 neuron/mm2. Therefore, the collected data are consistent with previous studies in other mammalian species concerning the location of the myenteric plexus, as well as the neural myenteric proportion NADPH-d+ compared with the population of neurons Giemsa+. The gaps in the knowledge of ENS of bats limits comparative intraspecific and interspecific studies.

Hospital infections have a great importance in unique health, especially when one takes into account that the bacteria that cause these infections can be multidrug resistant, an entry path for these microorganisms can be the peripheral venous catheter used, primarily, to maintain the patients hydration. The objective of this work was to detect bacterial contamination and identify the microorganisms involved through blood culture and culture of peripheral venous catheters used by dogs in four different sectors of a Veterinary Hospital. 21 dogs were selected, without differentiation between age or race, and 21 of them had their blood samples collected and 21 samples of catheter tip used by them. The samples were differentiated and identified by biochemical tests and separated into Gram-Negative bacilli, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. Among the 42 samples, there was no growth in 59.52% (25) of them, in 26.19% (11) of the samples, there was growth of Gram-Negative Bacilli, 11.90% (05) were coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp., and 2.39% (01) were Streptococcus sp. This work shows that there should be concern about contamination that may be present in catheters or hospital probes that may cause serious infections in animals or humans.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the profile of antimicrobial resistance in members of the family Enterobacteriaceae and to detect strains of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) in free-living Sapajus nigritus. Oral and rectal swabs were collected from 15 primates to isolate and identify bacteria, conduct phenotypic tests to detect antimicrobial sensitivity and ESBL-producing strains, and calculate the multiple antimicrobial resistance index. The least effective antimicrobial was amoxicillin (72.72%) and ampicillin (57.57%), and the samples were considered as high risk for public health. No sample was positive for ESBL production. The results show that this study is relevant to One Health initiatives, considering the possibility of transmission of bacterial resistance and resistant genes originating from direct or indirect interaction of S. nigritus with parkgoers. However, these animals cannot be considered as the only reservoirs and transmitters of resistant bacteria as they can be contaminated by human-origin bacteria that can be extremely harmful and often prove lethal to them that play an important role in relationship to the ecology, spreading seeds and controlling insects.

The use of antimicrobial agents has led to the emergence of resistant bacterial strains over a relatively short period. Furthermore, Staphylococcus spp. can produce β-lactamase, which explains the survival of these strains in a focus of infection despite the use of a β-lactam antibiotic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from bovine subclinical mastitis to oxacillin and vancomycin (by minimum inhibitory concentration) and to detect vancomycin heteroresistance by a screening method. We also evaluated β-lactamase production and resistance due to hyperproduction of this enzyme and investigated the mecA and mecC genes and performed staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec typing. For this purpose, 181 Staphylococcus spp. isolated from mastitis subclinical bovine were analyzed. Using the phenotypic method, 33 (18.2%) of Staphylococcus spp. were resistant to oxacillin. In contrast, all isolates were susceptible to vancomycin, and heteroresistance was detected by the screening method in 13 isolates. Production of β-lactamase was observed in 174 (96%) of the Staphylococcus spp. isolates. The mecA gene was detected in 8 isolates, all of them belonging to the species Staphylococcus epidermidis, and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec typing revealed the presence of type I and type IV isolates.

Background : Contact between humans and pets, mainly dogs and cats, has been increasing in recent years, which may result in the spread of infectious agents to new hosts and even to the environment, causing emergencies of national and international interest. The aim of this work was to understand the phenotypic profile of bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family of vaginal and preputial mucous of stray dogs from a border region. Materials, Methods & Results : Swab samples from the vaginal and preputial mucosa of stray dogs from two border regions were collected for later bacterial isolation, biochemical identification of bacterial isolates, susceptibility tests to different antimicrobials, and determination of the bacterial resistance index. Samples were collected from 70 animals, was possible to isolate 88 samples, of which 36 (40.9%) presented isolates of Gram-negative bacteria, with Escherichia coli being the most prevalent species (44.8%), followed by Obesumbacterium proteus in eight (27.5%); Enterobacter aerogenes and Enterobacter cloacae in two (6.8%); and Erwinia herbicola , Koserella trabulsii , Proteus mirabilis , and Serratia rubidaea (3.4%) from one isolate. The most resistant antimicrobials Clindamycin (100%), Metronidazole (100%), Oxacillin (100%), and Penicillin (100%) were tested against the vaginal and preputial samples and when the multidrug resistance index of the isolates was analyzed, all were classified as presenting a public health risk. Discussion : The results of this work suggest that stray dogs may be considered potential reservoirs of resistant pathogenic microorganisms, enabling future health problems due to the close coexistence of tutors with their dogs. It is known that the microorganisms that inhabit a certain environment or a specific part of the body are collectively called microbiomes. More specifically, some of them are bacteria that inhabit the reproductive mucous membranes (vaginal and preputial) of healthy dogs. Several works have also identified E. coli as the most prevalent bacteria identified in the vaginal and preputial mucosa of healthy dogs, that is regarded as a member of different microbiomes that is a commensal of different species of domestic animals, it is important to stress that this bacterial species presents sophisticated virulence mechanisms possibly responsible for different nosocomial infections as well as community infections in mankind and different species of animals. Found other bacterial species suggests a connection of these bacterial species with different environments and different animal species, which is even more disturbing regarding public health, since most of the time dogs share the same spaces of their tutors, which would facilitate the transmission and interaction with potentially pathogenic microorganisms. The MAR index result is worrying when dealing with stray and asymptomatic dogs, since the behavioral particularities of canine species such as licking the body, licking the genitalia, sniffing the environment for territorial demarcation and, in some cases, coprophagy, may facilitate the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms and even disseminate genes of resistance to their keepers, other animals, and even to the environment. Unique health education works should be conducted in border regions in order to raise awareness of the population involved about the different situations that may favor the dissemination of microorganisms and their resistance genes, including the problems caused by the illegal sale and/or transportation of drugs, a situation that is very common in borders.

Mastitis is a breast tissue disease with a high incidence in dairy cows and implications ranging from the health of the animals to the economy of the sector. Although antibiotic therapy is widely used, the search for new perspectives in the management and treatment of this disease is necessary. Although phage research preceded the discovery of antibiotics, with the appearance of antibiotics and their efficiency in treating infections, phage therapy fell into disuse. However, phage therapy has now re-emerged as an alternative for combating multidrug-resistant bacteria. The relationship between phages, bacteria, and the immune system is unique, generating a wide range of opportunities, some of which have yet to be studied. Thus, the objective of this review was to analyze the use of bacteriophages in the control of bovine mastitis and its association with other natural products today. Phages have been shown to exert effective antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity, and their interactions with other substances of natural origin could be a viable path for treating disease. Despite being little explored, phages are already being considered as an alternative for treatment against the main bacterial agents of mastitis. In this review, the safety and future pathways of phage therapy are addressed in order to indicate points where research still needs to progress and the main advantages and difficulties in this area. La mastitis es una enfermedad del tejido mamario que tiene una alta incidencia en el hato lechero con implicaciones que van desde la salud hasta la economía del sector. El uso de la terapia con antibióticos es de amplia aplicación, sin embargo, es necesaria la búsqueda de nuevas perspectivas en el manejo y tratamiento de esta enfermedad. La investigación en fagos es anterior al descubrimiento de los antibióticos, pero con la aparición de estas sustancias y su eficacia en el tratamiento de infecciones, esta terapia quedó en el olvido por un tiempo y resurgió como una alternativa para combatir las bacterias multirresistentes. La relación entre los fagos, las bacterias y el sistema inmunológico es única y genera una amplia gama de oportunidades, algunas de las cuales aún están poco estudiadas. Así, el objetivo de esta revisión fue analizar el uso de bacteriófagos en el control de la mastitis bovina y su asociación con otros productos naturales en la actualidad. Las investigaciones han mostrado una actividad antibacteriana y antibiopelícula efectiva, y las interacciones de los fagos con otras sustancias de origen natural aparecen como una vía viable aún poco explorada para la enfermedad, pero que ya se vislumbra en relación a los principales agentes causantes de mastitis. También se abordan cuestiones sobre la seguridad y los caminos para el futuro de la terapia con fagos con el fin de señalar los puntos en los que la investigación aún debe avanzar y las principales ventajas y dificultades en esta área. A mastite é uma afecção do tecido mamário que tem alta incidência no rebanho leiteiro com implicações que vão desde a saúde até a economia do setor. O uso de antibioticoterapia é amplamente aplicado, no entanto, a busca por novas perspectivas no manejo e tratamento desta doença é necessária. As pesquisas com fagos são anteriores a descoberta dos antibióticos, mas com o aparecimento dessas substâncias e a sua eficiência no tratamento das infecções, essa terapia ficou por um tempo esquecida vindo à tona novamente como alternativa no combate as bactérias multirresistentes. A relação entre fagos, bactérias e sistema imune é única, gerando um amplo range de oportunidades, algumas delas ainda pouco estudadas. Dessa forma, o objetivo desta revisão foi analisar o uso de bacteriófagos no controle da mastite bovina e sua associação com outros produtos naturais na atualidade. Pesquisas tem demonstrado efetiva atividade antibacteriana e anti-biofilme e, interações de fagos com outras substâncias de origem natural aparecem como um caminho viável ainda pouco explorado para a doença, mas já vislumbrado frente aos principais agentes causadores da mastite. Questões sobre a segurança e caminhos para o futuro da terapia fágica também são abordados com intuito de indicar pontos onde a pesquisa ainda deve avançar e as principais vantagens e dificuldades nesta área.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) são agentes causadores de doenças em todo o mundo, que acarretam grandes prejuízos e riscos à saúde humana e animal. Isto ocorre devido à grande capacidade que este micro-organismo possui de adquirir genes que codificam a produção de biofilmes, toxinas e, principalmente resistência a antimicrobianos. Com isso, torna-se muito importante a pesquisa com intenção em encontrar métodos alternativos para o combate a este patógeno. Atualmente, existem inúmeras pesquisas buscando encontrar e/ou desenvolver métodos alternativos frente à utilização de antimicrobianos para combater S. aureus, sendo relatada pela comunidade científica uma grande quantidade de cepas multirresistentes. Dada a grande relevância ao tema envolvendo a saúde única, este trabalho tem como objetivo ressaltar e enfatizar as principais linhas de pesquisa utilizadas atualmente no combate ao S. aureus. As linhas de pesquisa relatadas serão: terapia bacteriofágica; ozonioterapia; homeopatia; atividade de óleos essenciais e extrato de plantas.

Background : In Brazil, cats in households has recently increased dramatically, likely due to their lower space and care requirements. We need to know the health of these companion animal species, since they have behavioral patterns that make them an important link in the epidemiological chain. Extended spectrum beta-lactamase producer strains (ESBL) are resistant to penicillin, cephalosporin and monobactam, but they are susceptible to clavulanate. The goal of this study is to detect strains of Enterobacteriaceae that produce extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and evaluate the bacterial resistance profile in isolated cats ( Felis silvestris catus ) that live in a city located at west of Parana state, Brazil. Materials, Methods & Results : Swabs were aseptically collected from the anal orifice and oral cavity of 49 female domestic cats that were healthy upon clinical and physical examination, a minimum age of one year, weighing up to 3 kg, and had attended a veterinary clinic specializing in cats, in order to, later, perform the isolation and bacterial identification, antimicrobial sensibility phenotypic test and the phenotypic test to detect ESBL producer strains. From the 98 swabs collected it was possible to perform the bacterial isolation in 68 samples; 40.81% isolated from anal orifice and 28.57% isolated from oral cavity. From rectal and oral cavities 77.50% and 71.42% of the isolated were identified as Escherichia coli respectively, being 2.94% considered ESBL producer strains. In relation to bacterial resistance the antibiotics that shown more resistance in anal orifice were ampicillin, amoxicillin, nalidixic acid, sulfazotrim, tetracycline and aztreonam. In oral cavity they were ampicillin, amoxicillin, cefoxitin, amoxicillin + clavulanate, aztreonam, ceftriaxone and nalidixic acid; and the bacterial resistance index shown that 39.70% were considered high level risk. Discussion : Household cats have a very important role in society, since the benefits they provide to their owners are clear, however, it is worth pointing out that these animals also pose risks to human health, caused by the transmission of zoonoses and also the possibility of transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes between bacteria of animal and human origin, as well as between bacteria of the normal microbiota and pathogenic microorganisms of diferents origins. Therefore, it is important to understand the health of these companion animal species, because they exhibit behavioral patterns that make them an important link in the epidemiological chain of potentially infectious microorganisms, which may show antimicrobial resistance. Extended spectrum beta-lactamase producer strains (ESBL) are resistant to penicillin, cephalosporin and monobactam, but they are susceptible to clavulanate. These enzymes hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring of the antibiotic structure, inactivating them. Nowadays bacterial resistance is considered to be one of the greatest problems in public health worldwide, as infections and diseases outbraks are caused by multiresistant bacteria are more and more frequent. The results of this study demonstrate the presence of strains of Enterobacteriaceae family associated to the high bacterial resistance, with samples that indicate ESBL producer strains in domiciled cats, in a city of west Parana state in Brazil. These results confirm that these cats can be considered as reservoirs of different microbial agents and resistance gens, being a health problem by the possibility of dissemination. The cat population is multiplying in a higher proportion compared to dogs and may probably became predominant in less than one decade. Due this situation and thinking about human, animal and environmental health new phenotypic studies to confirm the resistance gens and ESBL producers should be conducted in this specie.

Therefore, there is a great need for alternative methods to control infections, especially those related to skin. One of the alternative methods is the high frequency equipment (HFE), which is used on skin conditions as an analgesic, an anti-inflammatory, and mainly to accelerate cicatricial processes and have a bactericidal effect through the formation of ozone. This research investigated the antibacterial effect of HFE on standard cultures of bacteria.Materials and methods: Dilutions (104 colony forming unit mL−1) were performed for Enterobacter aerogenes and Staphylococcus aureus with 24-hour growth bacteria. Then, 1 μL of each dilution was pipetted into suitable medium and the HFE flashing technique was used at intensities of 6, 8 and 10 mA for 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 seconds. The control group received no treatment. Plates were incubated at 37°C for 24 hours and then read.Results: The spark at intensity of 6 mA had no bactericidal effect on the E. aerogenes; however, a significant bacterial growth reduction occurred at intensity of 8 mA after 120 and 180 seconds, and at 10 mA, reduction in bacterial growth could already be verified at 30 seconds and total bacterial growth inhibition occurred in 180 seconds. For S. aureus, there was a strong bacterial growth inhibition at all intensities used; however, at 6 mA, absence of bacterium growth after 120 and 180 seconds was observed. By increasing the flashing intensity to 8 and 10 mA, it was observed that the bacterium growth was inhibited after only 30 seconds of irradiation.Conclusion: The HFE has time-dependent antibacterial effects against E. aerogenes and S.aureus bacteria that have several resistance mechanisms. Urinary tract infection in sows is among the main reproduction problems because of its influences on productivity of the herd, affecting mainly the general health of sows and has considerable increase in the replacement rate. Thus, it is considered as the most important endemic disease in the sow in the production phase. The aim of this study was to determine the physical, chemical and microbiological aspects of the urine of sows from a certified reproductive farm in the city of Toledo, Parana, Brasil, and later isolate and identify the pathogens present and perform an antibiogram of the samples. Urine samples from 100 sows were evaluated, performing physical-chemical, microbiological and antibiogram examinations. Etiological agents isolated with greatest frequency were Escherichia coli (75%), Salmonella sp. (19%) and Proteus vulgaris (6%). All samples were negative for Actinobaculum suis. The most effective antibiotics in controlling urinary tract infection was ceftiofur (77%) and gentamicin (73%). However, those presenting greater resistance were lincomycin (100%). In the physical examination of the urine samples, a total of 59% were light yellow in color. Under chemical evaluation, there was absence (100% negative) of uribilinogen, glucose, ketone bodies and bilirubin, and the presence (positivity) of protein (3%), nitrite (83%) and blood (1%). In general, the mean density was 1.015. The pH did not present variation, and remained neutral in all samples. Key words: Urinary tract infection, sows, productivity, antibiogram.

Background: The indiscriminate use of antibiotics both in humans and in animals, has contributed to the development of bacterial resistance. One of the key mechanisms in the resistance of enterobacteria to antibiotics is the production of extendedspectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), which reduce the therapeutic options available. Several studies have been performed in different animal species in order to isolate and identify multidrug-resistant strains and determine their antibiotic sensitivity profile. The purpose of this study was to detect ESBL-producing enterobacteria in isolates from a pet blue-fronted amazon parrot.Case: A 16-year-old pet blue-fronted-amazon parrot (Amazona aestiva) weighing 0.445 kg, from the city of Presidente Castelo Branco, Paraná, Brazil, was admitted into a specialized veterinary clinic in the city of Maringá. This parrot was presented with agitation and aggressive behavior. It was fed with sunflower seeds, and its cage was small and unsanitary especially in the feeding and drinking areas, which were heavily contaminated with feces. The parrot had been diagnosed with acute sinusitis approximately one year prior, with a history of treatment with tylosin, thuya (a herbal remedy popularly used for fowl pox), and a mineral-vitamin complex. The clinical symptoms included dyspnea and bilateral increase of facial swelling, with a mass in the peri-nasal region. A membranous red tissue not related to the nictitating membrane was observed in the lower left eyelid. To obtain a better clinical evaluation, the bird was anesthetized with an intramuscular injection of dextroketamine 50 mg/kg (KetaminS+™). Subsequently, physical examination, head radiographic examinations, and an attempt at sinus draining were performed. The radiographic examinations showed a decreased amount of air in the nasal sinuses. For treatment, oral itraconazole and vitamin A were prescribed, and a dietary improvement, prioritizing the offering of fruits and industrialized food for parrots was proposed. Samples were collected from the cloaca and choanae by making rotating movements with compressed sterile swabs in the corresponding locations. All samples were kept in Amies transport media with activated coal and forwarded under refrigeration to the Laboratory of Preventive Veterinary Medicine and Public Health in the Post-Graduation Program in Animal Sciences with Emphasis in Bioactive Products at Universidade Paranaense (UNIPAR).Discussion: The samples were subjected to phenotypic antimicrobial sensitivity tests and phenotypic testing for detecting ESBL-producing strains. Escherichia coli was identified and isolated from the cloacal sample. Phenotypic tests for antimicrobial sensitivity, detected resistance to the following antimicrobials: ceftriaxone, ceftiofur, cefotaxime, cefepime, ampicillin, amoxicillin, amoxicillin + clavulanate, and tetracycline. The phenotypic test for detecting ESBL-producing strains was positive. The findings in this study had no relation with the clinical symptoms presented by the parrot. However, in the samples collected, it was possible to detect the presence of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli, indicating that this parrot had strains in its cloacal microbiota that were either multidrug-resistant or at a subclinical stage of an infection. This knowledge is important, since the presence of this bacteria in a pet represents an important factor in the dissemination of multidrug-resistant strains into the environment, as well as being a source of contamination for both humans and other animals.

A hipertensão arterial tornou-se na atualidade um dos grandes problemas da saúde Pública em vários países, incluindo o Brasil e alterações nos hábitos, incluindo os hábitos alimentares são importantes para a prevenção, principalmente com a redução do consumo de sódio. Este trabalho objetivou desenvolver e analisar salames desenvolvidos com redução do teor de sódio e emprego de iogurte natural comercial como cultura starter. Foram produzidos salames com adição de 1,5% de cloreto de sódio e com a mesma porcentagem de uma mistura contendo 80% de cloreto de sódio e 20% de cloreto de potássio que foram mantidos por 7 dias em temperatura de 20ºC seguido por mais 23 dias em temperatura de refrigeração. Foram avaliados a composição da massa base dos salames, a variação nos valores de pH e contagem em NMP/g de coliformes termotolerantes. Os resultados indicam que a substituição de 20% do cloreto de sódio por cloreto de potássio não alterou as características da fermentação dos salames que atingiram valores de pH próximos aos esperados e encontrados na literatura e a análise microbiológica indicou que os salames produzidos estavam aptos para o consumo, uma vez que os valores encontrados encontraram se abaixo dos máximos permitidos pela legislação brasileira.Palavras-chave: cloreto de sódio; cloreto de potássio, redução de sódio, sal, sódio

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os padrões qualitativos dos recursos hídricos localizadas no Parque Municipal dos Xetás na cidade de Umuarama (PR), o local é considerado Área de Proteção Ambiental, onde possui algumas fontes de poluição gerando conhecimento das condições físico-químicas e bacteriológicas para os habitantes da cidade ou para outros indivíduos. Foram analisados os parâmetros como demanda química de oxigênio (DQO), cor aparente, óleos e graxas, nitrato, surfactantes, turbidez, pH, chumbo e mercúrio em amostras coletadas de pontos específicos. As análises foram realizadas segundo as especificações do Standard Methods for Examination of Water and Wastewather e obtiveram-se teor mínimo e máximo que variou no resultado do DBO de 2,40 e 25,50 mg de O2/L, cor aparente variou entre 36,00 e 146 mg Pt-Co/L e óleos e graxas variou entre 8 e 28,5 mg/L de acordo com especificações vigentes todas as análises deveriam estar ausentes. Não foram detectados DQO, nitrato, surfactantes, turbidez, pH e mercúrio nas amostras analisadas. No microbiológico os coliformes totais foram de 3,0 x104 e 6,0 x105 e coliformes termotolerantes entre 1,0 x104 e 1,6 x107 nas amostras analisadas. A análise de mercúrio foi realizada pelo laboratório de análises toxicológicas e ambientais (LATAM) de Curitiba-PR, as análises microbiológicas de coliformes termotolerantes e coliformes totais analisadas pelo laboratório da SANEPAR conveniada com a UNIPAR e as demais análises foram realizadas no laboratório da Universidade Paranaense – UNIPAR. Concluiu-se que os efeitos causados pelas emissões de esgotos clandestinos de alguns pontos da cidade e são despejados nas nascentes do Parque Municipal dos Xetás e deságuam no ribeirão Pirapozinho e rio Goioerê foram significativos.PALAVRAS-CLAVES: Bosque do Índio; Xetás; análises microbiológicas

Objective To assess the outcomes of implementing a clinical-laboratory score in the treatment of pregnant women with gestational diabetes. Methods A retrospective before-and-after implementation analysis was undertaken using data and neonatal outcomes for pregnant women with gestational diabetes treated before (January 2011–December 2012; control group) and after (January 2013–December 2014; score group) introduction of a newly developed score. To evaluate the effects of score adoption, odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated after adjustment for confounding factors. A mastite é a principal enfermidade que acomete o gado leiteiro. De todas as formas, a mastite subclínica é a que causa maiores perdas, na redução da produção, na diminuição da qualidade do leite e pelos altos custos de tratamento e descarte precoce de vacas. Altas contagens de células somáticas e baixo teor de sólidos totais no leite geralmente estão associados à mastite. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de um creme de papaína a 2%, associado ou não ao cloridrato de ceftiofur (125mg) por via intramamária sobre a contagem de células somáticas e sólidos totais. O estudo foi realizado em 23 quartos mamários com mastite subclínica, detectadas pelo exame do CMT (California Mastitis Test) e da CCS (contagem de células somáticas), divididas em 4 grupos (1 – cloridrato de ceftiofur 125 mg; 2- cloridrato de ceftiofur 125mg + papaína 2%; 3- papaína 2%; 4- controle). As análises foram feitas com base no CMT, na CCS e de sólidos totais (ST) antes e após o tratamento. Os quartos mamários que foram tratados com papaína 2% tiveram alterações no leite, com catarro, grumos e coágulo com intensificação do quadro inflamatório. Não houve diferença significativa ao teste T entre as amostras antes e após o tratamento em nenhum dos grupos para as variáveis estudadas.

However, current research highlights the importance of toxigenic coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from food. The aim of this study was to characterize Staphylococcus spp. isolated from cows with bovine subclinical mastitis regarding the presence of genes responsible for the production of staphylococcal enterotoxins and of the tst-1 gene encoding toxic shock syndrome toxin 1, and to determine the clonal profile of the isolates carrying any of the genes studied. A total of 181 strains isolated in different Brazilian states, including the South, Southeast, and Northeast regions, were analyzed. The sea gene was the most frequent, which was detected in 18.2% of the isolates, followed by seb in 7.7%, sec in 14.9%, sed in 0.5%, see in 8.2%, seg in 1.6%, seh in 25.4%, sei in 6.6%, and ser in 1.6%. The sej, ses, set, and tst-1 genes were not detected in any of the isolates. The typing of the isolates by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed important S. aureus and S. epidermidis clusters in different areas and the presence of enterotoxin genes in lineages isolated from animals that belong to herds located geographically close to each other. The functionality of nutraceutical foods is attributed to their bioactive compounds. These compounds are widely produced by plants, such as phenolic compounds, which have antioxidant activity and/or antimicrobial activity, acting against damage to macromolecules such as lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Secondary plant metabolites, including classes such as phenolic compounds, alkaloids, and terpenoids, have a wide variety of biological activities with medicinal potential. These secondary metabolites are considered bioactive compounds. The Zingiberaceae family received special attention for their large bioactive compound production. Such compounds are useful in foods as herbs, spices, flavorings, and seasonings and in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries as antioxidants and antimicrobials. Gingers are recognized as safe by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA), resulting in no side effects when consumed in moderate amounts. Recent studies show that, in addition to rhizomes, the leaves and flowers of some ginger species have antioxidant activity and consequent medicinal potential. Studies have demonstrated that in vitro and in vivo research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of ginger extracts and understand their role in the modulation of biological and molecular pathways, thus enabling the development of new therapeutic strategies. Thereby, the present work aims to provide a bibliographic review on the antimicrobial activity of Zingiber officinale Roscoe and Alpinia purpurata (Vieill.) K. Schum. (Zingiberaceae), popularly known as ginger and red ginger respectively, and their potential use in the One Health initiative.

Os micro-organismos presentes durante a ordenha podem ter uma grande redução quando os utensílios são corretamente higienizados e realiza-se o pré-dipping com produtos que possuem eficácia comprovada, evitando, assim, a proliferação de micro-organismos resistentes. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a eficácia dos principais desinfetantes utilizados, com concentrações variadas: o iodo 0,57%, clorexidine 2% e hipoclorito de sódio 2%, frente a cepas de Staphylococcus spp. Para a realização deste trabalho foram testadas cepas de Staphylococcus aureus, Staphyloccocus coagulase negativa e Staphylococcus coagulase positiva, advindas de caso de mastite bovina clínica e subclínica, com exposição aos desinfetantes nos tempos de 15", 30", 60" e 120". Levando-se em consideração os resultados do método utilizado, o desinfetante que causa uma maior resposta de sensibilidade foi o clorexidine a 2%, principalmente durante os tempos de 30” e 60”.

Populations of nonhuman primates are often considered to be a link in the chain of emerging infectious diseases, as they are reservoirs for different zoonotic pathogens. The objective of this study was to identify the presence of bacteria from the family Enterobacteriaceae in free-living nonhuman primates. The research was carried out in an urban park located in a city in the northern region of the State of Paraná, Brazil. The animals were captured in Tomahawk-type traps and chemically restrained, being oral and rectal samples collected with sterile swabs. For bacterial isolation, the samples were seeded on MacConkey agar plates and grown under anaerobic conditions. The subsequent identification was conducted using a commercial biochemical kit. Sixteen primates identified as black-capuchin-monkeys (Sapajus nigritus) were captured. Seven different enterobacterial species were identified from the oral cavity swabs: six Escherichia coli (42.9%), three Kluyvera species (21.40%), one Serratia rubidaea (7.14%), one Enterobacter aerogenes (7.14%), one Enterobacter cloacae (7.14%), one Hafnia alvei (7.14%), and one Erwinia herbicola (7.14%). Seven different species were identified from the rectal swabs: six Escherichia coli (40%), three Kluyvera species (20%), two Enterobacter aerogenes (13.32%), one Erwinia herbicola (6.67%), one Serratia rubidaea (6.67%), one Pragia fontium (6.67%), and one Edwardsiella tarda (6.67%). The results indicate that the isolated bacteria belong mainly to the human microbiota and had crossed the interspecific barrier, contaminating the nonhuman primates.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo elucidar a qualidade higienico-sanitaria de embutidos carneos registrados sob Inspecao Municipal e comercializados nos municipios paranaenses. Trinta e uma amostras foram coletadas pelas Vigilâncias Sanitarias Municipais e encaminhadas ao Laboratorio Central do Estado - LACEN, sendo distribuidas entre Campo Largo (5), Campo Mourao (2) e Guarapuava (24). Dos embutidos analisados, 6,45% eram secos, 38,71% eram frescos e 54,84% eram cozidos e/ou defumados. No total, 22,58% das amostras estavam em desacordo para contagens de Staphylococcus aureus, sendo que a maior prevalencia foi identificada nos embutidos cozidos e/ou defumados (57,14%). Para Salmonella spp. a prevalencia foi de 6,5%, sendo isolada apenas em amostras de embutidos frescais. Estes dados permitem concluir que os embutidos carneos analisados e registrados em Servicos Municipais de Inspecao no Estado do Parana demonstram a necessidade de um maior controle higienico-sanitario por parte dos produtores e orgaos fiscalizadores competentes. Um controle regular de qualidade de materias-primas, ingredientes e insumos e com a implantacao e implementacao das Boas Praticas de Fabricacao contemplando os processos e pessoas envolvidas na sua producao, distribuicao e comercializacao sao fundamentais para que estes produtos venham a se adequar a legislacao sanitaria.

Este estudo tem como objetivo verificar a caracteristicas fisico-quimicas do leite da regiao sudoeste do Parana. Para tanto, 293 propriedades foram classificadas segundo o numero de animais, posteriormente foi feito o sorteio simples de cada classe, perfazendo uma media de nove animais e diferentes caracteristicas quanto a raca, tipo de ordenha e estagio de lactacao. Foi realizado o CMT e colheitas de amostras (de julho a outubro de 2010) para CCS em frascos contendo conservante bromopol e enviados ao Laboratorio do Programa de Analise de Rebanhos Leiteiros da Associacao Paranaense de Criadores de Bovinos da Raca Holandesa (APCBRH) em equipamento de citometria de fluxo. As frequencias de todos os constituintes foram submetidas ao teste de Tukey. Os resultados demonstraram que animais com CMT positivo me pelo menos um dos quartos mamarios medias e desvio padrao de gordura (%), proteina (%), lactose (%), solidos totais (%) e CCS (CCS x 1000/mL) de 2,41 ± 1,22, 3,302 ± 0,46, 4,44 ± 0,45, 10,99 ± 1,32 e 443,80 ± 688,90, respectivamente. Destacando que as frequencias de gordura e solidos totais estao fora dos parâmetros estabelecidos pela IN 62 (referencias). Pode-se verificar que as vacas em lactacao regiao sudoeste do estado do Parana apresentam indices de taxas de gordura e solidos totais abaixo do estabelecido pela IN 62, necessitando de medidas sanitarias para reduzir o indice de mastite o que pode estar interferindo diretamente na qualidade do leite produzido.

Foodborne illness results in high costs to public health and the food chain production worldwide. The majority of the population is unaware of food safety requirements and consequently, domestic kitchens are sources of contamination and spread of disease. Eating habits and the profile of food handlers in these sites guide the planning of surveillance and public education. This study describes the epidemiological and microbiological aspects of household outbreaks of foodborne illness in the State of Parana, using the Notifiable Diseases Information System database. There were 357 outbreaks between 2008 and 2012 in the State of Parana, and households were the main place of occurrence (43.70%), followed by restaurants and bakeries (21.00%), and kindergartens and schools (11.20 %). Household outbreak records derived from the municipalities for regional health coverage, based in Curitiba, Cascavel, Pato Branco, Foz do Iguaçu and Londrina. These indicated an increased number of reported cases between 2011 and 2012. The increase in reporting reflects a greater awareness among professionals because of training. The results highlight the consumption of contaminated food (36.15%), by strains of coagulase positive Staphylococcus (36.23%). They also reflect an intensification and wholeness of public policies on the education of the population regarding hygiene principles in the acquisition, handling, preparation, storage, and consumption of food in the household.
