1. Manipulation of polarization topology using a Fabry-P\'erot fiber cavity with a higher-order mode optical nanofiber

Abstract

Optical nanofiber cavity research has mainly focused on the fundamental mode. Here, a Fabry-P\'erot fiber cavity with an optical nanofiber supporting the higher-order modes, TE01, TM01, HE21o, and HE21e, is demonstrated. Using cavity spectroscopy, with mode imaging and analysis, we observe cavity resonances that exhibit complex, inhomogeneous states of polarization with topological features containing Stokes singularities such as C-points, Poincar\'e vortices, and L-lines. In situ tuning of the intracavity birefringence enables the desired profile and polarization of the cavity mode to be obtained. These findings open new research possibilities for cold atom manipulation and multimode cavity quantum electrodynamics using the evanescent fields of higher-order mode optical nanofibers.

Abstract

Nanofibre-based optical cavities are particularly useful for quantum optics application, such as the development of integrated single-photon sources, and for studying fundamental light-matter interactions in cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED). Although several techniques have been used to produce nanofibre-based optical cavities, focussed ion beam (FIB) milling is becoming popular; it can be used for the fabrication of complex structures directly in the nanofibre. This technique uses a highly accelerated ion beam to remove atoms from the target material with high resolution. However, it is challenging to mill insulating materials with highly-curved structures and large aspect ratios, such as silica nanofibres, due to charge accumulation in the material that leads to mechanical vibrations and misalignment issues. In this article, we highlight the main features of nanofibres and briefly review cQED with nanofibre-based optical cavities. An overview of the milling process is given with a summary of different FIB milled devices and their applications. Finally, we present our technique to produce nanofibre cavities by FIB milling. To overcome the aforementioned challenges, we present a specially designed base plate with an indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated Si substrate and outline our procedure, which improves stability during milling and increases repeatability., Comment: The manuscript has 16 pages, 9 figures, and 3 tables, and it will be submitted to Applied Physics B: Laser and Optics

6. Effect of polyphenols from Syringa vulgaris on blood stasis syndrome

Abstract

In this study, we employed a previously developed in vivo assay system to determine whether the flowers and leaves of Syringa vulgaris (S. vulgaris; commonly known as “lilac”) can prevent blood stasis syndrome, known as oketsu in Japanese. This syndrome is considered an important pathology in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, and is related to diseases such as peripheral vascular disorders, blood vessel inflammation, and platelet aggregation, whose severities are augmented owing to lipid peroxidation, free radicals, and oxidative stress. The assay system employed in this study monitored the blood flow decrease in the tail vein of mice subjected to sensitization with hen egg white lysozyme. Through bioassay-guided fractionation of different S. vulgaris extracts, five polyphenols were isolated and identified. Among them, quercetine 3-glucoside, quercetin 3-rutinoside, and acteoside were identified as active compounds, as they significantly mitigated blood flow reduction. These findings indicate that the polyphenols obtained from S. vulgaris could be useful for preventing oketsu and improve the quality of life of individuals with disorders and diseases such as gynecopathy, cold sensitivity, poor circulation, allergy, and lifestyle-related diseases.
