10. Gene-environment interaction in determining plasma lipids and dietary response: The effect of common mutations in the gene for lipoprotein lipase (D9N and N291S)

Abstract

In understanding the genetics of polygenic disorders, the modifying effects of the different environmental factors experienced by individuals are particularly important. We have detected such an interaction between environmental modulation of the effect of two mutations in the lipoprotein lipase gene which alter amino acids (D9N and N291S) to result in a moderate reduction in the lipoprotein lipase activity and mass secreted from COS cells in transient expression assays. Each mutation occurs at a frequency of 2%-3% in the general population, and carriers for these mutations have slightly elevated plasma triglyceride and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, as expected from the role of lipoprotein lipase in lipoprotein metabolism. However, when these individuals also are obese, the effect on plasma lipid levels is marked, such that the individuals are predicted to be at a significant risk of atherosclerosis. This increase in risk may be because obesity promotes overproduction of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins from the liver, which overwhelms the already partially deficient lipoprotein lipase in the adipose and muscle. Individuals with the lipoprotein lipase S291 variant have significantly greater postprandial lipemia, in support of this mechanism, and carriers of such mutations may have a distinct response to changes in dietary fat. An understanding of the mechanisms of these effects will help to identify individuals who may be particularly responsive to small dietary changes and to identify potential therapeutic targets.

Abstract

International audience; Integrated gas sensors and measuring systems are desired devices in many domains, including large scales applications. One of the main issue still is their poor chemical selectivity despite the very wide diversity of developed systems. In this paper, we present our approach based on selectively adsorbing zeolite thin films. A full instrument has been developed with up to five transduction means based on a single adsorbing layer of zeolite. That layer is suspended on a large Mylar membrane capped with a functionalized Aluminum thin film. We present also an analytical mechanical model that allows estimating the instrument intrinsic possibilities.

12. Fully Electrical Post-Fabrication Trimming of Resistive Sensors.

Abstract

A compact and efficient IC architecture is presented as an alternative to laser-trimmed precision thin-film resistors or look-up tables. The objective is to keep the device, such as a four-terminal Wheatstone bridge, but to compensate for post-manufacturing offset and to avoid the so-induced degradation of performances in terms of full-scale, non-linearity, power supply noise rejection and scale factor. Expected advantages are a reduced cost due to the electrical-only implementation and a possible on-field calibration of high-end sensors. Application of the proposed solution is illustrated on an example to demonstrate improvement factors on offset and sensitivity accuracy of 32 and 10, respectively. Additionally, the power supply rejection ratio is improved by 30 dB. The experimental results finally demonstrate both efficiency and versatility of the proposed solution thanks to a first silicon prototype, fabricated in a 0.35 μm Technology from AMS, connected to an off-the-shelf pressure sensor.

13. A Temperature-Hardened Sensor Interface with a 12-Bit Digital Output Using a Novel Pulse Width Modulation Technique.

Abstract

A fully integrated sensor interface for a wide operational temperature range is presented. It translates the sensor signal into a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal that is then converted into a 12-bit digital output. The sensor interface is based on a pair of injection locked oscillators used to implement a differential time-domain architecture with low sensitivity to temperature variations. A prototype has been fabricated using a 180 nm partially depleted silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. Experimental results demonstrate a thermal stability as low as 65 ppm/°C over a large temperature range from -20 °C up to 220 °C., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
