The rapid fluctuations in the electron content of the ionosphere can significantly affect the performance and reliability of communication and GNSS systems. These fluctuations are closely linked to space weather and can result in simultaneous changes in the total electron content of the ionosphere across multiple regions globally. We show the existence of statistically significant synchronous connections between geographical locations when observing fluctuations in electron content. The two findings concerning rapid fluctuations in the electron content of the ionosphere are: 1) evidence of synchronous teleconnections in rapid local electron content variations across a wide range of geographical regions of the globe; and 2) the influence of the solar cycle on the geographic distribution of teleconnections is relatively minor, primarily impacting the frequency of teleconnections per unit of time. We characterize teleconnection patterns for different space weather variables throughout the 2016–2022 study period, encompassing the descending and ascending phases of solar cycles 24 and 25. Previous research has mainly focused on the impact of ionospheric irregularities in limited regions, weather conditions, and short time periods, while our findings indicate the occurrence of this phenomenon globally and during both high and low space weather activity.

Abstract On 30 October 2020 at 11:51 UT, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred in the Dodecanese sea (37.84°N, 26.81°E, 10 km depth) and generated a tsunami with an observed run-up of more than 1 m on the Turkish coasts. Both the earthquake and the tsunami produced acoustic and gravity waves that propagated upward, triggering co-seismic and co-tsunamic ionospheric disturbances. This paper presents a multi-instrumental study of the ionospheric impact of the earthquake and related tsunami based on ionosonde data, ground-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) data and data from DORIS beacons received by Jason3 in the Mediterranean region. Our study focuses on the Total Electron Content to describe the propagation of co-seismic and co-tsunami ionospheric disturbances (CSID, CTID), possibly related to gravity waves triggered by the earthquake and tsunami. We use simultaneous vertical ionosonde soundings to study the interactions between the upper and lower atmosphere, highlighting the detection of acoustic waves generated by the seismic Rayleigh waves reaching the ionosonde locations and propagating vertically up to the ionosphere. The results of this study provide a detailed picture of the Lithosphere-Atmosphere–Ionosphere coupling in the scarcely investigated Mediterranean region and for a relatively weak earthquake. Abstract Ionospheric delay modeling is not only important for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based space weather study and monitoring, but also an efficient tool to speed up the convergence time of Precise Point Positioning (PPP). In this study, a novel model, denoted as Quasi-4-Dimension Ionospheric Modeling (Q4DIM) is proposed for wide-area high precision ionospheric delay correction. In Q4DIM, the Line Of Sight (LOS) ionospheric delays from a GNSS station network are divided into different clusters according to not only the location of latitude and longitude, but also satellite elevation and azimuth. Both Global Ionosphere Map (GIM) and Slant Ionospheric Delay (SID) models that are traditionally used for wide-area and regional ionospheric delay modeling, respectively, can be regarded as the special cases of Q4DIM by defining proper grids in latitude, longitude, elevation, and azimuth. Thus, Q4DIM presents a resilient model that is capable for both wide-area coverage and high precision. Four different sets of clusters are defined to illustrate the properties of Q4DIM based on 200 EUREF Permanent Network (EPN) stations. The results indicate that Q4DIM is compatible with the GIM products. Moreover, it is proved that by inducting the elevation and azimuth angle dependent residuals, the precision of the 2-dimensional GIM-like model, i.e., Q4DIM 2-Dimensional (Q4DIM-2D), is improved from around 1.5 Total Electron Content Units (TECU) to better than 0.5 TECU. In addition, treating Q4DIM as a 4-dimensional matrix in latitude, longitude, elevation, and azimuth, whose sparsity is less than 5%, can result in its feasibility in a bandwidth-sensitive applications, e.g., satellite-based Precising Point Positioning Real-Time Kinematic (PPP-RTK) service. Finally, the advantages of Q4DIM in PPP over the 2-dimensional models are demonstrated with the one month's data from 30 EPN stations in both high solar activity year 2014 and low solar activity year 2020.

The INSPIRE project was dedicated to the study of physical processes and their effects in ionosphere which could be determined as earthquake precursors together with detailed description of the methodology of ionospheric pre-seismic anomalies definition. It was initiated by ESA and carried out by an international consortium. The full set of key parameters of the ionospheric plasma was selected based on the retrospective analysis of the ground-based and satellite measurements of pre-seismic anomalies. Using this classification the multi-instrumental database of worldwide relevant ionospheric measurements (ionosonde and GNSS networks, LEO-satellites with in situ probes including DEMETER and FORMOSAT/COSMIC ROC missions) was developed for the time intervals related to selected test cases. As statistical processing shows, the main ionospheric precursors appear approximately 5 days before the earthquake within the time interval of 30 days before and 15 days after an earthquake event. The physical mechanisms of the ionospheric pre-seismic anomalies generation from ground to the ionosphere altitudes were formulated within framework of the Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) model. The processes of precursor’s development were analyzed starting from the crustal movements, radon emission and air ionization, thermal and atmospheric anomalies, electric field and electromagnetic emissions generation, variations of the ionospheric plasma parameters, in particular vertical TEC and vertical profiles of the electron concentration. The assessment of the LAIC model performance with definition of performance criteria for earthquake forecasting probability has been done in statistical and numerical simulation domains of the Global Electric Circuit. The numerical simulations of the earthquake preparation process as an open complex system from start of the final stage of earthquake preparation up to the final point–main shock confirms that in the temporal domain the ionospheric precursors are one of the most late in the sequence of precursors. The general algorithm for the identification of the ionospheric precursors was formalized which also takes into account the external Space Weather factors able to generate the false alarms. The importance of the special stable pattern called the “precursor mask” was highlighted which is based on self-similarity of pre-seismic ionospheric variations. The role of expert decision in pre-seismic anomalies interpretation for generation of seismic warning is important as well. The algorithm performance of the LAIC seismo-ionospheric effect detection module has been demonstrated using the L’Aquila 2009 earthquake as a case study. The results of INSPIRE project have demonstrated that the ionospheric anomalies registered before the strong earthquakes could be used as reliable precursors. The detailed classification of the pre-seismic anomalies was presented in different regions of the ionosphere and signatures of the pre-seismic anomalies as detected by ground and satellite based instruments were described what clarified methodology of the precursor’s identification from ionospheric multi-instrumental measurements. Configuration for the dedicated multi-observation experiment and satellite payload was proposed for the future implementation of the INSPIRE project results. In this regard the multi-instrument set can be divided into two groups: space equipment and ground-based support, which could be used for real-time monitoring. Together with scientific and technical tasks the set of political, logistic and administrative problems (including certification of approaches by seismological community, juridical procedures by the governmental authorities) should be resolved for the real earthquake forecast effectuation.

The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) Transpolar Earth Reflectometry exploriNg system (G-TERN) was proposed in response to ESA’s Earth Explorer 9 revised call by a team of 33 multi-disciplinary scientists. The primary objective of the mission is to quantify at high spatio-temporal resolution crucial characteristics, processes and interactions between sea ice, and other Earth system components in order to advance the understanding and prediction of climate change and its impacts on the environment and society. The objective is articulated through three key questions. 1) In a rapidly changing Arctic regime and under the resilient Antarctic sea ice trend, how will highly dynamic forcings and couplings between the various components of the ocean, atmosphere, and cryosphere modify or influence the processes governing the characteristics of the sea ice cover (ice production, growth, deformation, and melt)? 2) What are the impacts of extreme events and feedback mechanisms on sea ice evolution? 3) What are the effects of the cryosphere behaviors, either rapidly changing or resiliently stable, on the global oceanic and atmospheric circulation and mid-latitude extreme events? To contribute answering these questions, G-TERN will measure key parameters of the sea ice, the oceans, and the atmosphere with frequent and dense coverage over polar areas, becoming a “dynamic mapper” of the ice conditions, the ice production, and the loss in multiple time and space scales, and surrounding environment. Abstract Single frequency users of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) should correct the ionospheric delay to obtain positioning solutions. A valuable source of ionospheric delay corrections is the global ionospheric models (GIMs) of Vertical Total Electron Content. The accuracy of GIMs is therefore important to improve the positioning accuracy. One of the main issues that affects the GIM performance, especially at low latitude regions, is the high sensitivity of the global positioning system (GPS) L2 frequency to ionospheric scintillation. As an attempt to overcome this issue, in this work, we study the capabilities of using only GPS L1 frequency to compute ionospheric corrections in form of regional ionospheric maps. The performance of the new ionospheric model is evaluated by means of single frequency precise point positioning, comparing the positioning results against the correction using dual‐frequency GPS signals, as well as compared to the corrections provided by GIMs produced by the international GNSS service. As a result, the positioning performance using single frequency model presented similar accuracy to the dual frequency models and, at the same time, provided less observations affected by ionospheric scintillations. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using single frequency GNSS data to develop ionospheric models and to improve the positioning over low latitudes.

The time evolution of the total number of free electrons in the Earth’s ionosphere, i.e., the Global Electron Content (GEC), during more than two solar cycles is analyzed in this work. The GEC time series has been extracted from the Global Ionospheric Maps (GIMs) of Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) estimated by UPC-IonSAT with TOMION-v1 software from global GPS measurements since the end of 1996. A dual-layer voxel-based tomographic model solved with a forward Kalman scalar filter, from dual-frequency carrier GPS data only, provides the so-called UQRG GIM after VTEC kriging interpolation, with a resolution of 15 min in time, 5° in longitude and 2.5° in latitude. UQRG is one of the best behaving GIMs in the International GNSS Service (IGS).In this context, the potential application of the GEC spectrum evolution as a potential space weather index is discussed and demonstrated.

Abstract Vertical total electron content (VTEC) has great importance in describing the ionosphere. VTEC values are commonly distributed in regular grids by means of so‐called global ionospheric maps (GIMs) and regional ionospheric maps (RIMs). Although considerable research has been conducted to develop regional and global models, there is no clear understanding of the benefits of using RIMs over GIMs. Aiming to contribute to this discussion, our investigation presents a comparison between seven global and regional ionospheric maps considering two approaches: (a) ionosonde data‐based assessment and (b) global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) positioning assessment. A challenging low latitude ionosphere scenario, the Brazilian region, was selected during a week with an active geomagnetic storm. The assessment results with ionosonde data have shown better performance of the RIM products named OTHR and OTRG. Among the global products, CODG and UQRG have shown the best performances. The worst results were obtained with the RIM named Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais. The assessment with GNSS positioning led to larger and noisier errors close to the equatorial anomaly. Two of the analyzed RIMs presented expected large errors in stations at the edges of the coverage area. To overcome this issue, a hybrid product was proposed to extend the RIM covered region. The proposed hybrid product (OTRG) presented the best results in the GNSS positioning domain.

A rádio ocultação (RO) começou a ser utilizada para a sondagem da atmosfera de outros planetas a partir da década de 1960. Com o desenvolvimento do Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) e de missões com satélites de baixa órbita (Low Earth Orbit - LEO) surgiu a possibilidade de investigações da atmosfera terrestre com a aplicação da RO-GNSS. Dos satélites transmissores GNSS até os receptores instalados nos satélites LEO, os sinais propagados sofrem diferentes tipos de influência da atmosfera. O sinal transmitido é refratado e, com isso, pode ser coletado pelo receptor embarcado no LEO, apesar da obstrução pela Terra. Essa geometria possibilita o cálculo dos índices de refração, os quais possuem informações da composição da atmosfera terrestre. Entre os perfis obtidos a partir do índice de refração, destacam-se os de temperatura, pressão e densidade de elétrons. No presente trabalho é realizada uma revisão teórica da técnica de RO-GNSS, com o intuito de apresentar a técnica e seu potencial a pesquisadores de diversas áreas que tenham possibilidade de utilizá-la. Primeiramente é apresentado um breve histórico do desenvolvimento da técnica, bem como as principais missões relacionadas ao tema, incluindo a situação de missões atualmente em operação e algumas perspectivas futuras. Além disso, são apresentados os principais elementos envolvidos na geometria da ocultação, bem como os principais conceitos e formulações para a obtenção dos perfis. Por fim, alguns produtos provenientes de missões de RO-GNSS são apresentados e analisados.

Swarm electron density (Ne) observations from the Langmuir probe (LP) can detect ionospheric disturbances at the altitude of a satellite. Along-track satellite observations provide a large number of very short observations of different places in the ionosphere, where Ne is disturbed. Moreover, different perturbations occupy various Ne signal frequencies. Therefore, such short signals are more recognizable in two dimensions, where aside from their change in time, we can observe their diversity in the frequency domain. Spectral analysis is an essential tool applied here, as it enables signal decomposition and the recognition of composite patterns of Ne disturbances that occupy different frequencies. This study shows a high-resolution application of short-term Fourier transform (STFT) to Swarm Ne observations in the Papua New Guinea region in the vicinity of earthquakes, tsunamis, and related general seismic activity. The system of tectonic plate junctions, including the Pacific–Australian boundary, is located orthogonally to Swarm track footprints. The selected wavelengths of seismically induced ionospheric disturbances detected via Swarm are compared with the three sets of three-month records of seismic activity: in the winter solstice of 2016/2017, when seismic activity was highest, and in the summer solstice and vernal equinox of 2016, which were calmer. Moreover, more Swarm data records are analyzed at the same latitudes for validation purposes, in a place where there are no tectonic plate boundaries that are orthogonal to the Swarm orbital footprint. Additional validation is supplied through Swarm Ne observations from completely different latitudes, where the Swarm orbital footprint orthogonally crosses a different subducting plate boundary. Aside from the seismic energy, the solar radio flux (F10.7), equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs), and geomagnetic ap and Dst indices are also reviewed here. Their influence on the ionospheric Ne is also found in Swarm observations. Finally, the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), applied to the pairs of 3-month time series created from Swarm Ne variations, seismic energy, ap, Dst, and F10.7, summarizes the graphical inspection of mutual correlations. It points to the predominant correlation of Swarm Ne disturbances with seismicity, especially during nighttime. We show that most of the Ne disturbances at a selected wavelength of 300 km correlate more with seismicity than with geomagnetic and solar indices. Therefore, Swarm LP can be assessed as being capable of observing the lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling (LAIC) from the orbit.

Abstract As a new Ionosphere Associate Analysis Center (IAAC) of the International GNSS Service (IGS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) started the routine computation of the real-time, rapid, and final Global Ionospheric Maps (GIMs) in 2015. The method for the generation of CAS rapid and final GIMs and recent updates are presented in the paper. The quality of CAS post-processed GIMs is assessed during 2015–2018 after the maximum of solar cycle 24. To perform an independent and fair assessment, Jason-2/3 Vertical Total Electron Contents (VTEC) are first used as the references over the ocean. GPS differential Slant TECs (dSTEC) generated from 55 Multi-GNSS Experimental (MGEX) stations of the IGS are also employed, which provides a complementing way to evaluate the ability of electron content models to reproduce the spatial and temporal gradients in the ionosphere. During the test period, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) GIMs present significantly positive deviations compared to the Jason VTEC and GPS dSTEC. Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) rapid GIM UQRG exhibits the best performance in both Jason VTEC and GPS dSTEC analysis. The CAS GIMs show comparable performance with the results of the first four IAACs of the IGS. As expected, the poor performance of all GIMs is in equatorial regions and the high latitudes of the southern hemisphere. The consideration of generating multi-layer or three-dimensional ionospheric maps is emphasized to mitigate the inadequacy of ionospheric single-layer assumption in the presence of pronounced latitudinal gradients. The use of ionospheric observations from the new GNSS constellations and other space- or ground-based observation techniques is also suggested in the generation of future GIMs, given the sparse GPS/GLONASS stations in the southern hemisphere.

The launch of a series of Starlink internet satellites on 3 February 2022 (S-36), and 7 July 2022 (S-49), coincided with the development of two-phase geomagnetic storms. The first launch S-36 took place in the middle of the moderate two-phase space weather storm, which induced significant technological consequences. After liftoff on 3 February at 18:13 UT, all Starlink satellites reached an initial altitude of 350 km in perigee and had to reach an altitude of ~550 km after the maneuver. However, 38 of 49 launched spacecrafts did not reach the planned altitude, left orbit due to increased drag and reentered the atmosphere on 8 February. A geomagnetic storm on 3–4 February 2022 has increased the density of the neutral atmosphere up to 50%, increasing drag of the satellites and dooming most of them. The second launch of S-49 at 13:11 UT on 7 July 2022 was successful at the peak of the two-phase geomagnetic storm. The global ionospheric maps of the total electron content (GIM-TEC) have been used to produce the ionospheric weather GIM-W index maps and Global Electron Content (GEC). We observed a GEC increment from 10 to 24% for the storm peak after the Starlink launch at both storms, accompanying the neutral density increase identified earlier. GIM-TEC maps are available with a lag (delay) of 1–2 days (real-time GIMs have a lag less than 15 min), so the GIMs forecast is required by the time of the launch. Comparisons of different GIMs forecast techniques are provided including the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE), Beijing (BADG and CASG) and IZMIRAN (JPRG) 1- and 2-day forecasts, and the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC-ionSAT) forecast for 6, 12, 18, 24 and 48 h in advance. We present the results of the analysis of evolution of the ionospheric parameters during both events. The poor correspondence between observed and predicted GIM-TEC and GEC confirms an urgent need for the industry–science awareness of now-casting/forecasting/accessibility of GIM-TECs during the space weather events.

This paper presents a new way of combining Abel inversion and the Chapman model with a linearly increasing scale height to retrieve ionospheric electron density vertical profiles from truncated-sounding radio-occultation data. A linear Vary–Chap model is used to cover the blind region due to data truncation, with parameters estimated by enumeration of the possible values in a grid centered around a set of parameters compatible with ionospheric physics. The resulting electron density is estimated with its corresponding error from the linear least-squares solution presenting the smaller post-fit residual on the input GNSS carrier-phase measurements. The results, tested on a set of representative GNSS RO measurements obtained by COSMIC/FORMOSAT-3, show that this method can retrieve EDVPs with a predominant absolute and relative error of 1010e−m−3 and 5%, respectively, and in less than 10 s per profile, which makes this method suitable for near real-time applications in upcoming missions such as EUMETSAT Polar System-Second Generation.

The ionospheric response at middle latitudes to geomagnetic storms is not yet very well understood. Total electron content (TEC) variations associated with eight strong geomagnetic storms between 2015 and 2022 obtained from GNSS receivers in the eastern area of the North Atlantic (Portuguese continental and insular territory) are studied in an attempt to fill this gap. It was found that for most of the studied geomagnetic storms, TEC variations are synchronous for the longitudinal ranges from 27° W and 9° W. In the southern part of the studied region (around 32° N), the amplitude of TEC variations is, in general, significantly higher than in the northern part (around 39° N). Some of the studied geomagnetic storms were associated with TEC variations that we interpret as effects of post-sunset equatorial plasma bubbles that travelled well north from their habitual region. Additionally, though most of the studied storms were accompanied by reports on different kinds of malfunction of GNSS systems (GPS; GALILEO and other), there is no clear pattern in their appearance in dependence on the geomagnetic/ionospheric storms’ strength, commencement time, and its characteristics, in general.

The radio occultation (RO) measurements of the Global Navigation Satellite System’s (GNSS’s) signals onboard a Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite enable the computation of the vertical electron density profile from the LEO satellite’s orbit height down to the Earth’s surface. The ionospheric extension experiment performed by the GNSS Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding (GRAS) receiver on board MetOp-A provides opportunities for ionospheric sounding but with the RO measurements only taken with an impact parameter height below 600 and 300 km within two different experiments, although MetOp-A was flying at an orbit height of about 800 km. Here, we present a model-assisted RO inversion technique for electron density retrieval from such kind of truncated data. The topside ionosphere and plasmasphere above the LEO orbit height are modelled by a Chapman layer function superposed with an exponential decay function representing the plasmasphere. Our investigation shows that the model-assisted technique is stable and robust and can successfully be used to retrieve the electron density values up to the LEO height from the truncated MetOp-A data, in particular when observations are available until 600 km. Moreover, this model-assisted technique is also successful with the availability of a small number of observations of the topside above the peak density height. For observations available only up to 300 km, the accuracy of the retrieved profile is comparable to the one obtained by the data truncated at a 600 km height only when the peak electron density lies below the 250 km altitude level.

In this work, a dedicated campaign by MetOp-A satellite is conducted to monitor the ionosphere based on radio-occultation (RO) measurements provided by the onboard GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding (GRAS). The main goal is to analyze the capabilities of the collected data to represent the bending angle and scintillation profiles of the ionosphere. We compare the MetOp-A products with those generated by other RO missions and explore the spatial/temporal distributions sensed by the MetOp-A campaign. Validation of dual frequency bending angles at the RO tangent points, S4 index, and Rate of the Total electron content Index (ROTI) is performed against independent products from Fengyun-3D and FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 satellites. Our main findings constitute the following: (1) bending angle profiles from MetOp-A agree well with Fengyun-3D measurements; (2) bending angle distributions show a typical S-shape variation along the altitudes; (3) signatures of the sporadic E-layer and equatorial ionization anomaly crests are observed by the bending angles; (4) sharp transitions are observed in the bending angle profiles above ~200 km due to the transition of the daytime/nighttime in addition to the transition of the bottom-side/top-side; and (5) sporadic E-layer signatures are observed in the S4 index distributions by MetOp-A and FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2, with expected differences in magnitudes between the GPS (Global Positioning System) L1 and L2 frequencies.

Abstract The determination of the ionospheric perturbation degree is essential to describe the ionosphere state for space weather monitoring. A new method for estimating the spatial and temporal components of the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) gradient is introduced. The new method is based on VTEC estimated at each grid point of Global Ionosphere Map (GIM) by the UPC‐IonSAT research group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Depending on the requirement, the VTEC spatial gradients can be derived at selected regions or grid points of the GIM on a global scale. According to the comparison with previous studies over the Europe region during quiet ionosphere state and two severe geomagnetic storms, the new method has proven to be reliable and has a great potential for the monitoring of ionospheric perturbation degree on a global scale. In addition, the associated warning of disturbed ionosphere might be available in the context of the on‐going development of real‐time GIMs.

This paper presents a novel technique to estimate DCBs from GPS transmitters and receivers on-board Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The technique consists of obtaining the DCBs as residuals from the difference between the ionospheric combination of the code and the associated ionospheric delay. The ionospheric delay is computed with TOMION, a background-model-free ionospheric tomographic technique based on dual-frequency GPS carrier phase data only, and solved with a Kalman filter. Thus, DCBs are also estimated epoch-wise from the LEO Precise Orbit Determination (POD) GPS receiver as a secondary product. The results for GPS satellite DCBs, obtained exclusively from the three MetOp LEO POD GPS receivers over four consecutive weeks, are in full agreement (i.e., at the level of a few tenths of ns) with those reported independently with other techniques from hundreds of ground-based receivers exclusively, by JPL and CODE analysis centers.

Abstract The ionospheric storms have adverse effects on the radio communications, satellite communications and also the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) application. A new Ionospheric storm Scale from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) Global Ionosphere Map (GIM), IsUG, is introduced for characterizing the ionospheric state on a global scale. The IsUG is based on the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) derived from the continuously computed UPC Quarter‐of‐an‐hour time resolution Rapid GIM (UQRG), taking as reference the ones during the period 1997 to 2014. It is similar to the I‐scale index previously introduced, although it was over Japan and based on raw GNSS data. The dependence of the VTEC on season, local time and geographical location at each grid point of UQRG is removed by normalizing (i.e., by substracting the mean and dividing by the corresponding standard deviation) the percentage deviation of hourly median VTEC. After validating IsUG versus I‐scale, the IsUG distribution is presented and analyzed at global scale during a severe geomagnetic storm from 7 to 10 November 2004 as an example of the potentialities of the new index. The results suggest that the IsUG global map has a great potential for the scientific study of ionospheric storms from a global perspective and also for space weather warning considering the accuracy of the recently developed real‐time GIMs.

During the last decade Global Positioning System (GPS) Continuous Operating Reference Stations networks have become a new important data source for meteorology. This has dramatically improved the ability to remotely sense the atmosphere under the influence of severe mesoscale and synoptic systems. The zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) is one of the atmospheric variables continuously observed, and its horizontal variations, the horizontal tropospheric gradients, are routinely computed nowadays within the dual‐frequency GPS processing, but their interpretation and relationship with the weather is still an open question. The purpose of this paper is to contribute in this direction by studying the effect that Hurricane Harvey had on the spatial and temporal behavior of the ZTDs and gradients, when it reached Texas coast, during 18–31 August 2017. The results show that ZTD time series present a clear and rapid increase larger than 10 cm in a few hours when the hurricane reached the area. Gradients behaviors show that the hurricane also produced significant changes on them, since the magnitude and predominant directions before and after the hurricane arrived are completely different. Noticeably, the gradient vectors before the landing are consistently related to the horizontal winds and pressure fields. In this manuscript we demonstrate that the ZTD gradients can show a consistent signature under severe weather events, strongly suggesting their potential application for short‐term weather forecasting.

This paper characterizes, with static and roving GNSS receivers in the context of precision agriculture research, the hybrid ionospheric-geodetic GNSS model Wide-Area Real-Time Kinematics (WARTK), which computes and broadcasts real-time corrections for high-precision GNSS positioning and navigation within sparse GNSS receiver networks. This research is motivated by the potential benefits of the low-cost precise WARTK technique on mass-market applications such as precision agriculture. The results from two experiments summarized in this work, the second one involving a working spraying tractor, show, firstly, that the corrections from the model are in good agreement with the corrections provided by IGS (International GNSS Services) analysis centers computed in post-processing from global GNSS data. Moreover, secondly and most importantly, we have shown that WARTK provides navigation solutions at decimeter-level accuracy, and the ionospheric corrections significantly reduce the computational time for ambiguity estimation: up to convergence times for the 50%, 75% and 95% of cases equal or below 30 s (single-epoch), 150 s and 600 s approximately, vs. 1000 s, 2750 s and 4850 s without ionospheric corrections, everything for a roving receiver at more than 100 km far away from the nearest permanent receiver. The real-time horizontal position errors reach up to 3 cm, 5 cm and 12 cm for 50%, 75% and 95% of cases, respectively, by constraining and continuously updating the ambiguities without updating the permanent receiver coordinates, vs. the 6 cm, 12 cm and 32 cm, respectively, in the same conditions but without WARTK ionospheric corrections.

Abstract An alternative approach to detect solar flares and quantify the associated extreme ultraviolet (EUV) solar flux rate was introduced in this journal by the authors: Global Navigation Satellite Systems Solar FLAre Indicator (GSFLAI) was founded on the dependence of the sudden electron content increase of the Earth ionosphere versus the angle regarding the flare source, the Sun, given by a simple but accurate first‐principles‐based model. Such overionization is directly measured from the dual‐frequency phase measurements gathered from hundreds of worldwide permanent receivers of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems, GNSS (like the Global Positioning System GPS), working many of them in real time. In this work we generalize GSFLAI for the very challenging scenario of stellar superflares, with a much weaker expected geoeffectiveness on the Earth ionosphere, making it difficult to distinguish its potential footprint regarding conventional ionospheric variability sources. Indeed, we will show that, unlike GSFLAI for solar flares, the new algorithm presented here (Blind GNSS search of Extraterrestrial EUV Sources [BGEES]) is able to detect EUV flares without the previous knowledge of the position of the source, which is also simultaneously estimated, providing an additional quality check of the detection. It will be first assessed with several case studies of solar flares of different intensities analyzed previously with GSFLAI. Finally, by focusing on the night hemisphere to avoid the Sun's larger effect on the ionosphere, the detection and location with BGEES of two recent stellar superflares, Proxima Centauri (18 March 2016, 08:32UT) and NGTS J121939.5‐355557 (1 February 2016, 04:00UT), are presented, strongly suggesting the extension and applicability of the new technique, also in real time.

We propose a method for Global Ionospheric Maps of Total Electron Content forecasting using the Nearest Neighbour method. The assumption is that in a database of global ionosphere maps spanning more than two solar cycles, one can select a set of past observations that have similar geomagnetic conditions to those of the current map. The assumption is that the current ionospheric condition can be expressed by a linear combination of conditions seen in the past. The average of these maps leads to common geomagnetic components being preserved and those not shared by several maps being reduced. The method is based on searching the historical database for the dates of the maps closest to the current map and using as a prediction the maps in the database that correspond to time shifts on the prediction horizons. In contrast to other methods of machine learning, the implementation only requires a distance computation and does not need a previous step of model training and adjustment for each prediction horizon. It also provides confidence intervals for the forecast. The method has been analyzed for two full years (2015 and 2018), for selected days of 2015 and 2018, i.e., two storm days and two non-storm days and the performance of the system has been compared with CODE (24- and 48-h forecast horizons).

GNSS meteorology is today one of the most growing technologies to monitor severe weather events. In this paper, we present the usage of 160 GPS reference stations over the period of 14 days to monitor and track Hurricane Harvey, which struck Texas in August 2017. We estimate the Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) and the tropospheric gradients with 30 s interval using TOMION v2 software and carry out the processing in Precise Point Positioning (PPP) mode. We study the relationship of these parameters with atmospheric variables extracted from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite mission and climate reanalysis model ERA5. This research finds that the ZWD shows patterns related to the rainfall rate and to the location of the hurricane. We also find that the tropospheric gradients are correlated with water vapor gradients before and after the hurricane, and with the wind and the pressure gradients only after the hurricane. This study also shows a new finding regarding the spectral distribution of the gradients, with a clear diurnal period present, which is also found on the ZWD itself. This kind of study approaches the GNSS meteorology to the increasing requirements of meteorologist in terms of monitoring severe weather events.

Prompt and accurate imaging of the ionosphere is essential to space weather services, given a broad spectrum of applications that rely on ionospherically propagating radio signals. As the 3D spatial extent of the ionosphere is vast and covered only fragmentarily, data fusion is a strong candidate for solving imaging tasks. Data fusion has been used to blend models and observations for the integrated and consistent views of geosystems. In space weather scenarios, low latency of the sensor data availability is one of the strongest requirements that limits the selection of potential datasets for fusion. Since remote plasma sensing instrumentation for ionospheric weather is complex, scarce, and prone to unavoidable data noise, conventional 3D-var assimilative schemas are not optimal. We describe a novel substantially 4D data fusion service based on near-real-time data feeds from Global Ionosphere Radio Observatory (GIRO) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) called GAMBIT (Global Assimilative Model of the Bottomside Ionosphere with Topside estimate). GAMBIT operates with a few-minute latency, and it releases, among other data products, the anomaly maps of the effective slab thickness (EST) obtained by fusing GIRO and GNSS data. The anomaly EST mapping aids understanding of the vertical plasma restructuring during disturbed conditions.

The conversion between the line-of-sight slant total electron content (STEC) and the vertical total electron content (VTEC) depends on the mapping function (MF) under the widely used thin layer ionospheric model. The thin layer ionospheric height (TLIH) is an essential parameter of the MF, which affects the accuracy of the conversion between the STEC and VTEC. Due to the influence of temporal and spatial variations of the ionosphere, the optimal TLIH is not constant over the globe, particularly in the polar regions. In this paper, a new method for determining the optimal TLIH is proposed, which compares the mapping function values (MFVs) from the MF at different given TLIHs with the “truth” mapping values from the UQRG global ionospheric maps (GIMs) and the differential TEC (dSTEC) method, namely the dSTEC- and GIM-based thin layer ionospheric height (dG-TLIH) techniques. The optimal TLIH is determined using the dG-TLIH method based on GNSS data over the Antarctic and Arctic. Furthermore, we analyze the relationship between the optimal TLIH derived from the dG-TLIH method and the height of maximum density of the F2 layer (hmF2) based on COSMIC data in the polar regions. According to the dG-TLIH method, the optimal TLIH is mainly distributed between 370 and 500 km over the Arctic and between 400 and 500 km over the Antarctic in a solar cycle. In the Arctic, the correlation coefficient between the hmF2 and optimal TLIH is 0.7, and the deviation between them is 162 km. Meanwhile, in the Antarctic, the correlation coefficient is 0.60, with a phase lag of ~3 months, with the hmF2 leading the optimal TLIH, and the deviation between them is 177 km.

The ionosphere is one of the main error sources in positioning and navigation; thus, information about the ionosphere is mandatory for precise modern Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications. The International GNSS Service (IGS) and its Ionosphere Associated Analysis Centers (IAAC) routinely provide ionospheric information in terms of global ionosphere maps (final GIM). Typically, these products are modeled using series expansion in terms of spherical harmonics (SHs) with a maximum degree of n=15 and are based on post processed observations from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), as well as final satellite orbits. However, precise applications such as autonomous driving or precision agriculture require real-time (RT) information about the ionospheric electron content with high spectral and spatial resolution. Ionospheric RT-GIMs are disseminated via Ntrip protocol using the SSR VTEC message of the RTCM. This message can be streamed in RT, but it is limited for the dissemination of coefficients of SHs of lower degrees only. It allows the dissemination of SH coefficients up to a degree of n=16. This suits to most the SH models of the IAACs, but higher spectral degrees or models in terms of B-spline basis functions, voxels, splines and many more cannot be considered. In addition to the SHs, several alternative approaches, e.g., B-splines or Voxels, have proven to be appropriate basis functions for modeling the ionosphere with an enhanced resolution. Providing them using the SSR VTEC message requires a transfer to SHs. In this context, the following questions are discussed based on data of a B-spline model with high spectral resolution; (1) How can the B-spline model be transformed to SHs in order to fit to the RTCM requirements and (2) what is the loss of detail when the B-spline model is converted to SHs of degree of n=16? Furthermore, we discuss (3) what is the maximum necessary SH degree n to convert the given B-spline model and (4) how can the transformation be performed to make it applicable for real-time applications? For a final assessment, we perform both, the dSTEC analysis and a single-frequency positioning in kinematic mode, using the transformed GIMs for correcting the ionospheric delay. The assessment shows that the converted GIMs with degrees n≥30 coincide with the original B-spline model and improve the positioning accuracy significantly.

This work presents a new method for assessing global ionospheric maps (GIM) using ionosonde data. The method is based on the critical frequency at the F2 layer directly measured by ionosondes to validate VTEC (vertical total electron content) values from GIMs. The analysis considered four different approaches to using foF2. The study was performed over one of the most challenging scenarios, the Brazilian region, considering four ionosondes (combined in six pairs) and thirteen GIM products available at CDDIS (Crustal Dynamics Data Information System). Analysis was conducted using daily, weekly, one year (2015), and four years (2014–2017) of data. Additional information from the ionosphere was estimated to complement the daily analysis, such as slab thickness and shape function peak. Results indicated that slab thickness and shape function peak could be used as alternative indicators of periods and regions where this method could be applied. The weekly analysis indicated the squared frequency ratio with local time correction as the best approach of using foF2, between the ones evaluated. The analysis of one-year data (2015) was performed considering thirteen GIMs, where CODG and UQRG were the two GIMs that presented the best performance. The four-year time series (2014–2017) were analyzed considering these two products. Regional and temporal ionospheric influences could be noticed in the results, with expected larger errors during the solar cycle peak in 2014 and at locations with pairs of ionosondes with the larger distance apart. Therefore, we have confirmed the viability of the developed approach as an assessment method to analyze GIMs quality based on ionosonde data.

Recommendations of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) Workshop 2017 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan and International GNSS Service (IGS) Workshop 2018 in Wuhan, China included establishment of an ionosphere mapping service that would fuse measurements from two independent sensor networks: IGS permanent GNSS receivers providing the vertical total electron content (VTEC) measurements and ionosondes of the Global Ionosphere Radio Observatory (GIRO) that compute the bottomside vertical profiles of the ionospheric plasma density. Using available GAMBIT software at GIRO, we introduced new VTEC products to its data roster: previously unavailable global average (climate) maps of VTEC and slab thickness based on climatological capabilities of IRI. Incorporation of the VTEC and τ maps into the GAMBIT Explorer environment provided data analysts with nearly 10-year history of the reference average VTEC records and opened access to the GAMBIT toolkit for evaluation and validation of the τ computations. This result is the first step towards establishing an infrastructure and the data workflow to provide GAMBIT users with the low latency and consistent quality and usability of the ionospheric weather-climate specifications. Combination of IGS-provided VTEC and GIRO-provided peak density of F2 layer NmF2 allows ground-based evaluation of the equivalent slab thickness τ, a derived property of the near-Earth plasma that characterizes the skewness of its vertical profile up to the GNSS spacecraft altitudes.

In this work, we characterized the ionospheric disturbances generated during the Japan Tohoku earthquake of 11 March 2011, by means of the Atomic Decomposition Detector of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (ADDTID) algorithm. This algorithm automatically detects and characterizes Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (TIDs) from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements. Applying the high-precision estimates of ADDTID, the propagation parameters would make it easier to distinguish TIDs from different origins, in particular the characteristics conforming the acoustic gravity waves driven by the earthquake/tsunami. This method does not assume that disturbances follow a circular pattern of propagation, and can estimate the location by the propagation pattern of tsunami wavefronts and related TIDs. In this work, we present in a single framework a description of phenomena observed by different researchers. By means of the ADDTID algorithm, we detect: (a) simultaneous TIDs of different characteristics, where the detection was robust against the curvature of the wave fronts of the perturbations and the accuracy of the estimated parameters. The results were double-checked by visual inspection from detrended Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) maps and keogram plots, and the parameters of the slow-speed TIDs were consistent with the tsunami waveform measurements; (b) different wavefronts between the west and east TIDs around the epicenter, consistent in time and space with the post-earthquake tsunami; (c) complete evolution of the circular TIDs driven by the tsunami during the GNSS observable area; (d) fast and short circular TIDs related to the acoustic waves of earthquake; (e) the pre-seismic activity consisting of a set of fast westward TIDs, and the comparison with neighboring days; (f) the location estimation of the tsunami wavefront along the coast and the possible use as early warning. Finally, we report disturbances that had not been previously published with a possible application to local and real-time detection of tsunamis.

This work will provide a detailed characterization of the travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) created by the solar eclipse of 21 August 2017, the shadow of which crossed the United States from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean. The analysis is done by means of the Atomic Decomposition Detector of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (ADDTID) algorithm. This method automatically detects and characterizes multiple TIDs from the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observation. The set of disturbances generated by the eclipse has a richer and more varied behavior than that associated with the shock wave directly produced by cooling effects of the moon shadow. This can be modeled in part as if the umbra and penumbra of the eclipse were moving cylinders that intersects with variable elevation angle a curved surface. This projection gives rise to regions of equal penumbra with shapes similar to ellipses, with different centers and foci. The result of this is reflected in the time evolution of the TID wavelengths produced by the eclipse, which depend on the vertical angle of the sun with the surface of the earth, and also a double bow wave phenomenon, where the bow waves are generated in advance to the umbra. We show that the delay in the appearance of the disturbances with the transit of the eclipse are compatible with the physical explanations, linked to the different origins of the disturbances and the wavelengths. Finally, we detected a consistent pattern, in location and time of disturbances in advance to the penumbra as a set of medium scale TIDs, which could be hypothesized as soliton waves of the bow wave. In all cases, the detected disturbances were checked visually on the detrended vertical total electron content (TEC) maps.

Total electron content measurements given by the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) have successfully presented results to capture the signatures of equatorial plasma bubbles. In contrast, the correct reproduction of plasma depletions at electron density level is still a relevant challenge for ionospheric tomographic imaging. In this regard, this work shows the first results of a new tomographic reconstruction technique based on GNSS and radio-occultation data to map the vertical and horizontal distributions of ionospheric plasma bubbles in one of the most challenging conditions of the equatorial region. Twenty-three days from 2013 and 2014 with clear evidence of plasma bubble structures propagating through the Brazilian region were analyzed and compared with simultaneous observations of all-sky images in the 630.0 nm emission line of the atomic oxygen. The mean rate of success of the tomographic method was 37.1%, being more efficient near the magnetic equator, where the dimensions of the structures are larger. Despite some shortcomings of the reconstruction technique, mainly associated with ionospheric scintillations and the weak geometry of the ground-based GNSS receivers, both vertical and horizontal distributions were mapped over more than 30° in latitude, and have been detected in instances where the meteorological conditions disrupted the possibility of analyzing the OI 630 nm emissions. Therefore, the results revealed the proposed tomographic reconstruction as an efficient tool for mapping characteristics of the plasma bubble structures, which may have a special interest in Space Weather, Spatial Geodesy, and Telecommunications.

In this paper, we present a method for forecasting the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) distribution from the International GNSS Service’s Global Ionospheric Maps. The forecasting system gives an estimation of the value of the TEC distribution based on linear combination of previous TEC maps (i.e., a set of 2D arrays indexed by time), and the computation of a tangent subspace in a manifold associated to each map. The use of the tangent space to each map is justified because it allows modeling the possible distortions from one observation to the next as a trajectory on the tangent manifold of the map. The coefficients of the linear combination of the last observations along with the tangent space are estimated at each time stamp to minimize the mean square forecasting error with a regularization term. The estimation is made at each time stamp to adapt the forecast to short-term variations in solar activity.

Radar altimetry provides valuable measurements to characterize the state and the evolution of the ice sheet cover of Antartica and Greenland. Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has the potential to complement the dedicated radar altimeters, increasing the temporal and spatial resolution of the measurements. Here we perform a study of the Greenland ice sheet using data obtained by the GNSS-R instrument aboard the British TechDemoSat-1 (TDS-1) satellite mission. TDS-1 was primarily designed to provide sea state information such as sea surface roughness or wind, but not altimetric products. The data have been analyzed with altimetric methodologies, already tested in aircraft based experiments, to extract signal delay observables to be used to infer properties of the Greenland ice sheet cover. The penetration depth of the GNSS signals into ice has also been considered. The large scale topographic signal obtained is consistent with the one obtained with ICEsat GLAS sensor, with differences likely to be related to L-band signal penetration into the ice and the along-track variations in structure and morphology of the firn and ice volumes The main conclusion derived from this work is that GNSS-R also provides potentially valuable measurements of the ice sheet cover. Thus, this methodology has the potential to complement our understanding of the ice firn and its evolution.
