The classical method for evaluating the waveguide ability only focuses on the optical loss coefficient. However, for the micro- or submicroscale, an organic waveguide is demonstrated by the present study whose scale effect should not be neglected. We found that the optical loss coefficient increased remarkably when decreasing the sectional size of the microfibers. Furthermore, simulations based on Finite-Difference Time-Domain also demonstrated the size-dependent effect of the waveguide. Both the experimental and simulating results showed that the optical loss coefficient converges to a certain value, which means that the scale effect can be neglected as the sectional size is large enough. On the basis of the present study, we suggest that the scale-dependent effect on the sectional size of the waveguide should be investigated by evaluating the waveguide ability by the optical loss coefficient.

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ; as a potential photosensitizer) has good photocurrent performance and chemical stability but often exhibits low utilization efficiency under ultraviolet (UV) region excitation. Herein, we devised a near-infrared light-to-UV light-mediated photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing platform for the sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) based on core-shell NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm@TiO 2 upconversion microrods by coupling with target-triggered rolling circle amplification (RCA). The upconversion microrods synthesized through the hydrothermal reaction could act as a photosensing platform to convert the near-infrared (near-IR) excitation into UV emission for generation of photoinduced electrons. The target analyte was determined on a functional magnetic bead by using the corresponding aptamers with a sandwich-type assay format. Upon target CEA introduction, a complex was first formed between capture aptamer-1-conjugated magnetic bead (Apt1-MB) and aptamer-2-primer DNA (Apt2-pDNA). Thereafter, the carried primer DNA by the aptamer-2 paired with linear padlock DNA to trigger the RCA reaction. The guanine (G)-rich product by RCA reaction was cleaved by exonuclease I and exonuclease III (Exos I/III), thereby resulting in the formation of numerous individual guanine bases to enhance the photocurrent of core-shell NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm@TiO 2 upconversion microrods under near-IR illumination (980 nm). Under optimal conditions, the near-IR light-mediated PEC aptasensing system could exhibit good photoelectrochemical response toward target CEA and allowed for the detection of target CEA as low as 3.6 pg mL -1 . High reproducibility and good accuracy were achieved for analysis of human serum specimens. Importantly, the near-IR-activated PEC aptasensing scheme provides a promising platform for ultrasensitive detection of other biomolecules.

A direct method has been used for the first time, to compute effective atomic numbers (Z eff) of water, air, human tissues, and some organic and inorganic compounds, for total electron proton and alpha particle interaction in the energy region 10 keV-1 GeV. The obtained values for Z eff were then compared to those obtained using an interpolation procedure. In general, good agreement has been observed for electrons, and the difference (%) in Z eff between the results of the direct and the interpolation method was found to be <10 % for all materials, in the energy range from 10 keV to 1 MeV. More specifically, results of the two methods were found to agree well (Dif. <10 %) for air, calcium fluoride, kapton polyimide film, paraffin wax and plastic scintillator in the entire energy region with respect to the total electron interaction. On the other hand, values for Z eff calculated using both methods for protons and alpha particles generally agree with each other in the high-energy region above 10 MeV.

In the welding process between similar or dissimilar materials, inserting an intermediate layer and pressure assistance are usually thought to be necessary. In this paper, the direct welding between alumina-silicate glass and metal (aluminum, copper, and steel), under exposure from 1 kHz femtosecond laser pulses without any auxiliary processes, is demonstrated. The micron/nanometer-sized metal particles induced by laser ablation were considered to act as the adhesive in the welding process. The welding parameters were optimized by varying the pulse energy and the translation velocity of the sample. The shear joining strength characterized by a shear force testing equipment was as high as 2.34 MPa. This direct bonding technology has potential for applications in medical devices, sensors, and photovoltaic devices.

Radiation transport simulation models can provide estimations of radiation effects such as detector response and detection capabilities. The objective of this research was to develop a methodology for quick, efficient, and effective determination of the composition of shielding materials to be used in radiation transport models. A C++ code, MatFit, was developed that used the concept of densitometry and the iterative method developed for the Spectrum Analysis by Neutron Detectors II (SAND II) computer program to estimate the elemental composition of shielding materials. These results were compared to previous neutron activation analysis (NAA) on the same samples. It was determined that densitometry provided an elemental approximation that yielded an attenuation rate within 10% of that found through NAA but requires much fewer resources, as well as less time. From this research, it is recommended that the developed method and C++ program be used when constructing models for detector response.
