We construct the vector field associated with the GKLS generator for systems described by Gaussian states. This vector field is defined on the dual space of the algebra of operators, restricted to operators quadratic in position and momentum. It is shown that the GKLS dynamics accepts a decomposition principle, that is, this vector field can be decomposed in three parts, a conservative Hamiltonian component, a gradient-like and a Choi-Krauss vector field. If $\eta$ is a contact form on a manifold $M$ such that the orbits of the Reeb vector field form a simple foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on $M$, then the presymplectic 2-form $d\eta$ on $M$ induces a symplectic structure $\omega$ on the quotient manifold $N=M/\mathcal{F}$. We call $(M,\eta)$ a $\textit contactification$ of the symplectic manifold $(N,\omega)$. First, we present an explicit geometric construction of contactifications of some coadjoint orbits of connected Lie groups. Our construction is a far going generalization of the well-known contactification of the complex projective space $\mathbb{C}P^{n-1}$, being the unit sphere $S^{2n-1}$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, and equipped with the restriction of the Liouville 1-form on $\mathbb{C}^n$. Second, we describe a constructive procedure for obtaining contactification in the process of the Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer symplectic reduction and indicate geometric obstructions for the existence of compact contactifications. Third, we show that contactifications provide a nice geometrical tool for a Lagrangian description of Hamiltonian systems on compact symplectic manifolds $(N,\omega)$, on which symplectic forms never admit a `vector potential'., Comment: 30 pages

We define the gauge potentials of Poisson electrodynamics as sections of a symplectic realization of the spacetime manifold and infinitesimal gauge transformations as a representation of the associated Lie algebroid acting on the symplectic realization. Finite gauge transformations are obtained by integrating the sections of the Lie algebroid to bisections of a symplectic groupoid, which form a one-parameter group of transformations, whose action on the fields of the theory is realized in terms of an action groupoid. A covariant electromagnetic two-form is obtained, together with a dual two-form, invariant under gauge transformations. An extension of Cencov's categorical description of classical inference theory to the domain of quantum systems is presented. It provides a novel categorical foundation to the theory of quantum information that embraces both classical and quantum information theory in a natural way, while also allowing to formalise the notion of quantum environment. It is well known that certain features of a quantum theory cannot be described in the standard picture on a Hilbert space. In particular, this happens when we try to formally frame a quantum field theory, or a thermodynamic system with finite density. This forces us to introduce different types of algebras, more general than the ones we usually encounter in a standard course of quantum mechanics. We show how these algebras naturally arise in the Schwinger description of the quantum mechanics of an infinite spin chain. In particular, we use the machinery of Dirac-Feynman-Schwinger (DFS) states developed in recent works to introduce a dynamics based on the modular theory by Tomita-Takesaki, and consequently we apply this approach to describe the Ising model., Comment: 42 pages, 1 figure

We investigate the general properties of the dimensional reduction of the Dirac theory, formulated in a Minkowski spacetime with an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. This is done by applying Hadamard's method of descent, which consists in conceiving low-dimensional theories as a specialization of high-dimensional ones that are uniform along the additional space coordinate. We show that the Dirac equation reduces to either a single Dirac equation or two decoupled Dirac equations, depending on whether the higher-dimensional manifold has even or odd spatial dimensions, respectively. We perform a reduction from three to two spatial dimensions of the physics of a spin-1/2 fermion coupled to the electromagnetic field, by applying Hadamard's method of descent. We consider first the free case, in which motion is determined by the Dirac equation, and then the coupling with a dynamical electromagnetic field, governed by the Dirac-Maxwell equations. We find that invariance along one spatial direction splits the free Dirac equation in two decoupled theories. On the other hand, a dimensional reduction in the presence of an electromagnetic field provides a more complicated theory in 2+1 dimensions, in which the method of descent is extended by using the covariant derivative. We go on with the program started in the companion paper [CDI+] of defining a Poisson bracket structure on the space of solutions of the equations of motion of first order Hamiltonian field theories. The case of non-Abelian gauge theories is addressed by using a suitable version of the coisotropic embedding theorem.

We analyse the problem of defining a Poisson bracket structure on the space of solutions of the equations of motions of first order Hamiltonian field theories. The cases of Hamiltonian mechanical point systems (as a (0 + 1)-dimensional field) and more general field theories without gauge symmetries are addressed by showing the existence of a symplectic (and, thus, a Poisson) structure on the space of solutions. Also the easiest case of gauge theory, namely free electrodynamics, is considered: within this problem, a pre-symplectic tensor on the space of solutions is introduced, and a Poisson structure is induced in terms of a flat connection on a suitable bundle associated to the theory.

Given a real, finite-dimensional, smooth parallelizable Riemannian manifold $(\mathcal{N},G)$ endowed with a teleparallel connection $\nabla$ determined by a choice of a global basis of vector fields on $\mathcal{N}$, we show that the $G$-dual connection $\nabla^{*}$ of $\nabla$ in the sense of Information Geometry must be the teleparallel connection determined by the basis of $G$-gradient vector fields associated with a basis of differential one-forms which is (almost) dual to the basis of vector fields determining $\nabla$. We call any such pair $(\nabla,\nabla^{*})$ a $G$-dual teleparallel pair. Then, after defining a covariant $(0,3)$ tensor $T$ uniquely determined by $(\mathcal{N},G,\nabla,\nabla^{*})$, we show that $T$ being symmetric in the first two entries is equivalent to $\nabla$ being torsion-free, that $T$ being symmetric in the first and third entry is equivalent to $\nabla^{*}$ being torsion free, and that $T$ being symmetric in the second and third entries is equivalent to the basis vectors determining $\nabla$ ($\nabla^{*}$) being parallel-transported by $\nabla^{*}$ ($\nabla$). Creases are purposely introduced to thin structures for designing deployable origami, artistic geometries, and functional structures with tunable nonlinear mechanics. Modeling the mechanics of creased structures is challenging because creases introduce geometric discontinuity and often have complex mechanical responses due to the local material damage. In this work, we propose a continuous description of the sharp geometry of creases and apply it to the study of \emph{creased annuli}, made by introducing radial creases to annular strips with the creases annealed to behave elastically. We find creased annuli have generic bistability and can be folded into various compact shapes, depending on the crease pattern and the overcurvature of the flat annulus. We use a regularized Dirac delta function (RDDF) to describe the geometry of a crease, with the finite spike of the RDDF capturing the localized curvature. Together with anisotropic rod theory, we solve the nonlinear mechanics of creased annuli, with its stability determined by the standard conjugate point test. We find excellent agreement between precision tabletop models, numerical predictions from our analytical framework, and modeling results from finite element simulations. We further show that by varying the rest curvature of the thin strip, dynamic switches between different states of creased annuli can be achieved, which could inspire the design of novel deployable and morphable structures. We believe our smooth description of discontinuous geometries will benefit to the mechanical modeling and design of a wide spectrum of engineering structures that embrace geometric and material discontinuities.

Starting from the canonical symmetroid $\mathcal{S}(G)$ associated with a groupoid $G$, the issue of describing dynamical maps in the groupoidal approach to Quantum Mechanics is addressed. After inducing a Haar measure on the canonical symmetroid $\mathcal{S}(G)$, the associated von-Neumann groupoid algebra is constructed. It is shown that the left-regular representation allows to define linear maps on the groupoid-algebra of the groupoid $G$ and given subsets of functions are associated with completely positive maps. In this paper the problem of tomographic reconstruction of states is investigated within the so-called Schwinger's picture of Quantum Mechanics in which a groupoid is associated with every quantum system. The attention is focused on spin tomography: In this context the groupoid of interest is the groupoid of pairs over a finite set. In a nutshell, this groupoid is made up of transitions between all possible pairs of outcomes belonging to a finite set. In addition, these transitions possess a partial composition rule, generalizing the notion of groups. The main goal of the paper consists in providing a reconstruction formula for states on the groupoid-algebra associated with the observables of the system. Using the group of bisections of this groupoid, which are special subsets in one-to-one correspondence with the outcomes, a frame is defined and it is used to prove the validity of the tomographic reconstruction. The special case of the set of outcomes being the set of integers modulo n, with n odd prime, is considered in detail. In this case the subgroup of discrete affine linear transformations, whose graphs are linear subspaces of the groupoid, provides a \textit{quorum} in close analogy with the continuos case., Comment: 32 pages

We study the isospectrality problem for a free quantum particle confined in a ring with a junction, analyzing all the self-adjoint realizations of the corresponding Hamiltonian in terms of a boundary condition at the junction. In particular, by characterizing the energy spectrum in terms of a spectral function, we classify the self-adjoint realizations in two classes, identifying all the families of isospectral Hamiltonians. These two classes turn out to be discerned by the action of parity (i.e. space reflection), which plays a central role in our discussion., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

We consider some natural (functorial) lifts of geometric objects associated with statistical manifolds (metric tensor, dual connections, skewness tensor, etc.) to higher tangent bundles. It turns out that the lifted objects form again a statistical manifold structure, this time on the higher tangent bundles, with the only difference that the metric tensor is pseudo-Riemannian. What is more, natural lifts of potentials (called also divergence or contrast functions) turn out to be again potentials, this time for the lifted statistical structures. We propose an analogous procedure for lifting statistical structures on Lie algebroids and lifting contrast functions which are defined on Lie groupoids. In particular, we study in detail Lie groupoid structures of higher tangent bundles of Lie groupoids. DESTINY+ is an upcoming JAXA Epsilon medium-class mission to fly by the Geminids meteor shower parent body (3200) Phaethon. It will be the world's first spacecraft to escape from a near-geostationary transfer orbit into deep space using a low-thrust propulsion system. In doing so, DESTINY+ will demonstrate a number of technologies that include a highly efficient ion engine system, lightweight solar array panels, and advanced asteroid flyby observation instruments. These demonstrations will pave the way for JAXA's envisioned low-cost, high-frequency space exploration plans. Following the Phaethon flyby observation, DESTINY+ will visit additional asteroids as its extended mission. The mission design is divided into three phases: a spiral-shaped apogee-raising phase, a multi-lunar-flyby phase to escape Earth, and an interplanetary and asteroids flyby phase. The main challenges include the optimization of the many-revolution low-thrust spiral phase under operational constraints; the design of a multi-lunar-flyby sequence in a multi-body environment; and the design of multiple asteroid flybys connected via Earth gravity assists. This paper shows a novel, practical approach to tackle these complex problems, and presents feasible solutions found within the mass budget and mission constraints. Among them, the baseline solution is shown and discussed in depth; DESTINY+ will spend two years raising its apogee with ion engines, followed by four lunar gravity assists, and a flyby of asteroids (3200) Phaethon and (155140) 2005 UD. Finally, the flight operations plan for the spiral phase and the asteroid flyby phase are presented in detail.

Noticing that the space of the solutions of a first order Hamiltonian field theory has a pre-symplectic structure, we describe a class of conserved charges on it associated to the momentum map determined by any symmetry group of transformations. Gauge theories are dealt with by using a symplectic regularization based on an application of Gotay's coisotropic embedding theorem. The analysis of Electrodynamics and of the Klein-Gordon theory illustrates the main results of the theory as well as the emergence of the energy-momentum tensor algebra of conserved currents.

We derive one- and two-dimensional models for classical electromagnetism by making use of Hadamard's method of descent. A novel derivation of Feynman's sum-over-histories construction of the quantum propagator using the groupoidal description of Schwinger picture of Quantum Mechanics is presented. It is shown that such construction corresponds to the GNS representation of a natural family of states called Dirac-Feynman-Schwinger (DFS) states. Such states are obtained from a q-Lagrangian function $\ell$ on the groupoid of configurations of the system. The groupoid of histories of the system is constructed and the q-Lagrangian $\ell$ allow to define a DFS state on the algebra of the groupoid. The particular instance of the groupoid of pairs of a Riemannian manifold serves to illustrate Feynman's original derivation of the propagator for a point particle described by a classical Lagrangian $L$., Comment: 16 pages

Using the recently developed groupoidal description of Schwinger's picture of Quantum Mechanics, a new approach to Dirac's fundamental question on the role of the Lagrangian in Quantum Mechanics is provided. It is shown that a function $\ell$ on the groupoid of configurations (or kinematical groupoid) of a quantum system determines a state on the von Neumann algebra of the histories of the system. This function, which we call {\itshape q-Lagrangian}, can be described in terms of a new function $\mathcal{L}$ on the Lie algebroid of the theory. Schr\"{o}dinger's famous Gedankenexperiment involving a cat is used as a motivation to discuss the evolution of states of the composition of classical and quantum systems in the groupoid formalism for physical theories introduced recently. It is shown that the notion of classical system, in the sense of Birkhoff and von Neumann, is equivalent, in the case of systems with a countable number of outputs, to a totally disconnected groupoid with Abelian von Neumann algebra. In accordance with Raggio's theorem, the impossibility of evolving the product state of a composite system made up of a classical and a quantum one into an entangled state by means of a unitary evolution which is internal to the composite system itself is proved in the groupoid formalism., Comment: 24 pages. Context: Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims: The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 million square kilometers., Comment: 54 pages, 14 figures

In this study, we explore the mechanics of a bigon and a bigon ring from a combination of experiments and numerical simulations. A bigon is a simple elastic network consisting of two initially straight strips that are deformed to intersect with each other through a fixed intersection angle at each end. A bigon ring is a novel multistable structure composed of a series of bigons arranged to form a loop. We find that a bigon ring usually contains several families of stable states and one of them is a multiply-covered loop, which is similar to the folding behavior of a bandsaw blade. To model bigons and bigon rings, we propose a numerical framework combining several existing techniques to study mechanics of elastic networks consisting of thin strips. Each strip is modeled as a Kirchhoff rod, and the entire strip network is formulated as a two-point boundary value problem (BVP) that can be solved by a general-purpose BVP solver. Together with numerical continuation, we apply the numerical framework to study static equilibria and bifurcations of the bigons and bigon rings. Both numerical and experimental results show that the intersection angle and the aspect ratio of the strip's cross section contribute to the bistability of a bigon and the multistability of a bigon ring; the latter also depends on the number of bigon cells in the ring. The numerical results further reveal interesting connections among various stable states in a bigon ring. Our numerical framework can be applied to general elastic rod networks that may contain flexible joints, naturally curved strips of different lengths, etc. The folding and multistable behaviors of a bigon ring may inspire the design of novel deployable and morphable structures

In this work it is shown that there is an inherent nonlinear evolution in the dynamics of the so-called generalized coherent states. To show this, the immersion of a classical manifold into the Hilbert space of quantum mechanics is employed. Then one may parametrize the time-dependence of the wave function through the variation of parameters in the classical manifold. Therefore, the immersion allows to consider the so-called principle of analogy, i.e. using the procedures and structures available from the classical setting to employ them in the quantum framework.

A novel reduction procedure for covariant classical field theories, reflecting the generalized symplectic reduction theory of Hamiltonian systems, is presented. The departure point of this reduction procedure consists in the choice of a submanifold of the manifold of solutions of the equations describing a field theory. Then, the covariance of the geometrical objects involved, will allow to define equations of motion on a reduced space. The computation of the canonical geometrical structure is performed neatly by using the geometrical framework provided by the multisymplectic description of covariant field theories. We use the general setting for contrast (potential) functions in statistical and information geometry provided by Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. The contrast functions are defined on Lie groupoids and give rise to two-forms and three-forms on the corresponding Lie algebroid. The groupoids description of Schwinger's picture of quantum mechanics is continued by discussing the closely related notions of composition of systems, subsystems, and their independence. Physical subsystems have a neat algebraic description as subgroupoids of the Schwinger's groupoid of the system. The groupoids picture offers two natural notions of composition of systems: Direct and free products of groupoids, that will be analyzed in depth as well as their universal character. Finally, the notion of independence of subsystems will be reviewed, finding that the usual notion of independence, as well as the notion of free independence, find a natural realm in the groupoids formalism. The ideas described in this paper will be illustrated by using the EPRB experiment. It will be observed that, in addition to the notion of the non-separability provided by the entangled state of the system, there is an intrinsic `non-separability' associated to the impossibility of identifying the entangled particles as subsystems of the total system., Comment: 32 pages. In this paper we will present tha main features of what can be called Schwinger's foundational approach to Quantum Mechanics. The basic ingredients of this formulation are the \textit{selective measurements}, whose algebraic composition rules define a mathematical structure called groupoid, which is associated with any physical system. After the introduction of the basic axioms of a groupoid, the concepts of observables and states, statistical interpretation and evolution are derived. Motivated by the geometrical structures of quantum mechanics, we introduce an almost-complex structure $J$ on the product $M\times M$ of any parallelizable statistical manifold $M$. On May 30th, 2017 at about 21h 09m 17s UTC a green bright fireball crossed the sky of north-eastern Italy. The fireball path was observed from some all-sky cameras starting from a mean altitude of $81.1 \pm 0.2$ km (Lat. $44.369^{\circ} \pm 0.002^{\circ}$ N; Long. $11.859^{\circ} \pm 0.002^{\circ}$ E) and extinct at $23.3 \pm 0.2$ km (Lat. $45.246^{\circ} \pm 0.002^{\circ}$ N; Long. $12.046^{\circ} \pm 0.002^{\circ}$ E), between the Italian cities of Venice and Padua. In this paper, on the basis of simple physical models, we will compute the atmospheric trajectory, analize the meteoroid atmospheric dynamics, the dark flight phase (with the strewn field) and compute the best heliocentric orbit of the progenitor body. By fixing a reference frame in spacetime, it is possible to split the Euler-Lagrange equations associated with a degenerate Lagrangian into purely evolutionary equations and constraints on the allowed Cauchy data with respect to the notion of Space and Time associated with the given reference frame. In the context of Classical Electrodynamics, we introduce a "covariantization procedure" that allows to invert the perspective and to recover a full-fledged covariant formulation of Maxwell's equations starting only with constraint equations (i.e., Gauss' law and the local version of the law of conservation of magnetic flux) as perceived in a sufficient number of (inertial) reference frames on Minkowski spacetime.

In this paper a generalized form of relativistic dynamics is presented: A realization of the Poincar\'e algebra is provided in terms of vector fields on the tangent bundle of a simultaneity surface in $\mathbb{R}^4$. The construction of this realization is explicitly shown to clarify the role of the commutation relations of the Poincar\'e algebra versus their description in terms of Poisson brackets in the no-interaction theorem. Schwinger's algebra of selective measurements has a natural interpretation in the formalism of groupoids. Its kinematical foundations, as well as the structure of the algebra of observables of the theory, was presented in two previous papers (arXiv:1905.12274 and arXiv:1907.03883). In this paper, a closer look to the statistical interpretation of the theory is taken and it is found that an interpretation in terms of Sorkin's quantum measure emerges naturally. It is proven that a suitable class of states of the algebra of virtual transitions of the theory allows to define quantum measures by means of the corresponding decoherence functionals. Quantum measures satisfying a reproducing property are described and a class of states, called factorizable states, possessing the Dirac-Feynman `exponential of the action' form are characterized. Finally, Schwinger's transformation functions are interpreted similarly as transition amplitudes defined by suitable states. In describing a dynamical system, the greatest part of the work for a theoretician is to translate experimental data into differential equations. It is desirable for such differential equations to admit a Lagrangian and/or an Hamiltonian description because of the Noether theorem and because they are the starting point for the quantization. As a matter of fact many ambiguities arise in each step of such a reconstruction which must be solved by the ingenuity of the theoretician. Linear dynamics restricted to invariant submanifolds generally gives rise to nonlinear dynamics. Submanifolds in the quantum framework may emerge for several reasons: one could be interested in specific properties possessed by a given family of states, either as a consequence of experimental constraints or inside an approximation scheme. In this work we investigate such issues in connection with a one parameter group $\phi_t$ of transformations on a Hilbert space, $\mathcal{H}$, defining the unitary evolutions of a chosen quantum system. Two procedures will be presented: the first one consists in the restriction of the vector field associated with the Schr\"{o}dinger equation to a submanifold invariant under the flow $\phi_t$. The second one makes use of the Lagrangian formalism and can be extended also to non-invariant submanifolds, even if in such a case the resulting dynamics is only an approximation of the flow $\phi_t$. Schwinger's algebra of selective measurements has a natural interpretation in terms of groupoids. This approach is pushed forward in this paper to show that the theory of coherent states has a natural setting in the framework of groupoids. Thus given a quantum mechanical system with associated Hilbert space determined by a representation of a groupoid, it is shown that any invariant subset of the group of invertible elements in the groupoid algebra determines a family of generalized coherent states provided that a completeness condition is satisfied.
