2. Genotypic and phenotypic profiling of 127 Legionella pneumophila strains: Insights into regional spread.

Abstract

Given the recent global surge in Legionnaires' disease cases, the monitoring of Legionella pneumophila becomes increasingly crucial. Epidemiological cases often stem from local outbreaks rather than widespread dissemination, emphasizing the need to study the characteristics of this pathogen at a local level. This study focuses on isolates of L. pneumophila in the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia to assess specific genotype and phenotype distribution over time and space. To this end, a total of 127 L. pneumophila strains isolated between 2005 and 2017 within national surveillance programs were analysed. Rep-PCR, RAPD, and Sau-PCR were used for genotypic characterization, while phenotypic characterization was conducted through fatty acids analysis. RAPD and Sau-PCR effectively assessed genetic characteristics, identifying different profiles for the isolates and excluding the presence of clones. Although Sau-PCR is rarely used to analyse this pathogen, it emerged as the most discriminatory technique. Phenotypically, hierarchical cluster analysis categorized strains into three groups based on varying membrane fatty acid percentages. However, both phenotypic and genotypic analyses revealed a ubiquitous profile distribution at a regional level. These results suggest an absence of correlations between strain profiles, geographical location, and isolation time, indicating instead high variability and strain dissemination within this region. Abstract

Asymptotically good sequences of ramp secret sharing schemes were given in [Asymptotically good ramp secret sharing schemes, arXiv:1502.05507] by using one-point algebraic geometric codes defined from asymptotically good towers of function fields. Their security is given by the relative generalized Hamming weights of the corresponding codes. In this paper we demonstrate how to obtain refined information on the RGHWs when the codimension of the codes is small. For general codimension, we give an improved estimate for the highest RGHW.

Abstract

Asymptotically good sequences of linear ramp secret sharing schemes have been intensively studied by Cramer et al. in terms of sequences of pairs of nested algebraic geometric codes. In those works the focus is on full privacy and full reconstruction. In this paper we analyze additional parameters describing the asymptotic behavior of partial information leakage and possibly also partial reconstruction giving a more complete picture of the access structure for sequences of linear ramp secret sharing schemes. Our study involves a detailed treatment of the (relative) generalized Hamming weights of the considered codes.

Abstract

(1) Background: Monitoring effluent in water treatment plants has a key role in identifying potential pollutants that might be released into the environment. A non-target analysis approach can be used for identifying unknown substances and source-specific multipollutant signatures. (2) Methods: Urban and industrial wastewater effluent were analyzed by HPLC-HRMS for non-target analysis. The anomalous infiltration of industrial wastewater into urban wastewater was investigated by analyzing the mass spectra data of "unknown common" compounds using principal component analysis (PCA) and the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) AI tool. The outcomes of the models were compared. (3) Results: The outlier detection was more straightforward in the SOM model than in the PCA one. The differences among the samples could not be completely perceived in the PCA model. Moreover, since PCA involves the calculation of new variables based on the original experimental ones, it is not possible to reconstruct a chromatogram that displays the recurring patterns in the urban WTP samples. This can be achieved using the SOM outcomes. (4) Conclusions: When comparing a large number of samples, the SOM AI tool is highly efficient in terms of calculation, visualization, and identifying outliers. Abstract

The purpose of this report was to describe an uncommon congenital anomaly in a dog. An 8-year-old, mixed-breed, male dog, was referred because of progressive difficulties on defecation. A complete diagnostic work-up (hematological analysis, radiology, ultrasound, and computed tomography), followed by surgery and histopathology, allowed us to diagnose the condition as unilateral urogenital disontogeny. The disorder was characterized by unilateral anomalies of the urinary tract (ectopic and dilated hydroureter, hydronephrosis, and renal dysplasia) associated with ipsilateral anomalies of the genital system (partial permanence of the duct of Wolff evolved into an epididymal-like structure and testicular agenesis). En bloc surgical excision of the complex of urogenital anomalies was performed with no complications during or after surgery. Surgery was considered to be effective in this dog since he no longer showed clinical signs of illness.

Security of linear ramp secret sharing schemes can be characterized by the relative generalized Hamming weights of the involved codes. In this paper, we elaborate on the implication of these parameters and devise a method to estimate their value for general one-point algebraic geometric codes. As it is demonstrated, for Hermitian codes, our bound is often tight. Abstract

BACKGROUND Little is known about current clinical practice concerning peri-operative red blood cell transfusion in neonates and small infants. Guidelines suggest transfusions based on haemoglobin thresholds ranging from 8.5 to 12���g���dl-1, distinguishing between children from birth to day 7 (week 1), from day 8 to day 14 (week 2) or from day 15 (���week 3) onwards. OBJECTIVE To observe peri-operative red blood cell transfusion practice according to guidelines in relation to patient outcome. DESIGN A multicentre observational study. SETTING The NEonate-Children sTudy of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) trial recruited patients up to 60 weeks' postmenstrual age undergoing anaesthesia for surgical or diagnostic procedures from 165 centres in 31 European countries between March 2016 and January 2017. PATIENTS The data included 5609 patients undergoing 6542 procedures. Inclusion criteria was a peri-operative red blood cell transfusion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The primary endpoint was the haemoglobin level triggering a transfusion for neonates in week 1, week 2 and week 3. Secondary endpoints were transfusion volumes, 'delta haemoglobin' (preprocedure - transfusion-triggering) and 30-day and 90-day morbidity and mortality. RESULTS Peri-operative red blood cell transfusions were recorded during 447 procedures (6.9%). The median haemoglobin levels triggering a transfusion were 9.6 [IQR 8.7 to 10.9] g���dl-1 for neonates in week 1, 9.6 [7.7 to 10.4] g���dl-1 in week 2 and 8.0 [7.3 to 9.0] g���dl-1 in week 3. The median transfusion volume was 17.1 [11.1 to 26.4] ml���kg-1 with a median delta haemoglobin of 1.8 [0.0 to 3.6] g���dl-1. Thirty-day morbidity was 47.8% with an overall mortality of 11.3%. CONCLUSIONS Results indicate lower transfusion-triggering haemoglobin thresholds in clinical practice than suggested by current guidelines. The high morbidity and mortality of this NECTARINE sub-cohort calls for investigative action and evidence-based guidelines addressing peri-operative red blood cell transfusions strategies. Abstract

Platelet-rich plasma, platelet-rich fibrin, fibrin glue, and platelet lysate are the most widely used nontransfusional hemocomponents that, as biological and therapeutic aids, enhance the physiological reactions after an injury to facilitate the repair and regeneration processes. Recently, this type of therapy also has significantly expanded in veterinary medicine. Due to many similarities, the animal patient could be a good reference as a study model for humans, especially for chronic and difficult-to-heal injuries. This review discusses the current state of hemocomponent use for topical application in veterinary medicine, with a comparison with human medicine.
