Abstract

Troisième volet d’un travail sur la démarche sociohydrologique, ce retour d’expérience s’intéresse aux modalités du dialogue interdisciplinaire en l’absence d’une expérience de terrain partagée. Un postulat a guidé la confection d’un « canevas » pour structurer les échanges au sein d’un groupe de chercheurs : la nécessité de partager des expériences pour négocier les points de convergence entre regards des sciences de la nature et de la société sur un même objet, ici les canaux d’irrigation communautaires. L’analyse du processus de construction, d’expérimentation et d’évaluation de ce canevas est entendue comme élément à part entière du processus interdisciplinaire. La double perspective sur laquelle repose cette contribution, expérimentation et réflexivité, permet un retour sur les modalités du dialogue interdisciplinaire et examine l’importance des frustrations dans la progression de la négociation.

Abstract

Au cours d'un atelier, qui a eu lieu à Montpellier en décembre 2015, destiné à partager des expériences de recherche sur un objet hydroagricole, le petit barrage, une vingtaine de chercheurs d'horizons disciplinaires variés ont interrogé leurs pratiques et conceptions de l'interdisciplinarité entre sciences de la nature et sciences de la société. Cette expérience exploratoire a mis en lumière deux postures interdisciplinaires différentes. La première repose sur la recherche d'interfaces et de complémentarités entre les disciplines pour documenter ensemble des objets complexes. La seconde se construit plutôt dans l'exploration des limites des disciplines pour identifier de nouveaux fronts de recherche à l'intersection des approches en présence. Alors que l'interdisciplinarité est souvent déclinée au singulier, cet atelier nous invite à la penser au pluriel à travers les différentes pratiques qui nourrissent le processus de construction de l'interaction entre personnes.

Abstract

International audience; This brief contains the data needed to calculate and assess the robustness of a water level – flood link (WAFL) in the Cambodian Mekong Delta, which was used to analyze changes in the long-term behavior of Monsoon inundations in the region. The data comprises the WAFL raster (.tif) files for two zones in the delta. Zone A is located on the right bank of the Bassac River, a distributary of the Mekong. Zone B is bracketed between the Mekong River and the Bassac River. The WAFL was calculated by linking water levels measured by the Mekong River Commission (MRC) at the hydrological station in Koh Khel, with inundation maps derived from Sentinel-1 and -2 images taken between 2017 and 2021. The final WAFL raster files provides a basis for estimating inundation extents using in-situ water levels. Furthermore, this brief includes data used for the assessment of WAFL, including in-situ water level data and the extents of natural vegetation in the case study area in 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020. The former was collected using a differential pressure logger. The latter was calculated from historical Landsat image composites. Finally, raster files representing the incidence and duration of inundations in the case study area before and after the year 2008 are provided. These were calculated based on the WAFL and the MRC water levels. For each area, before- and after-images are available, as well as a raster representing the change between the two. To simplify visualization and geographical location, shapefiles (.shp) of the study area and the location of the in-situ logger are also provided.

Abstract

The increased open-access availability of radar and optical satellite imagery has engendered numerous land use and land cover (LULC) analyses combining these data sources. In parallel, cloud computing platforms have enabled a wider community to perform LULC classifications over long periods and large areas. However, an assessment of how the performance of classifiers available on these cloud platforms can be optimized for the use of multi-imagery data has been lacking for multi-temporal LULC approaches. This study provides such an assessment for the supervised classifiers available on the open-access Google Earth Engine platform: Naive Bayes (NB), Classification and Regression Trees (CART), Random Forest (RF), Gradient Tree Boosting (GTB), and Support Vector Machines (SVM). A multi-temporal LULC analysis using Sentinel-1 and 2 is implemented for a study area in the Mekong Delta. Classifier performance is compared for different combinations of input imagery, band sets, and training datasets. The results show that GTB and RF yield the highest overall accuracies, at 94% and 93%. Combining optical and radar imagery boosts classification accuracy for CART, RF, GTB, and SVM by 10-15 percentage points. Furthermore, it reduces the impact of limited training dataset quality for RF, GTB, and SVM.

Abstract

Studying the spatial and temporal distribution of surface water resources is critical, especially in highly populated areas and in regions under climate change pressure. There is an increasing number of satellite Earth observations that can provide information to monitor surface water at global scale. However, mapping surface waters at local and regional scales is still a challenge for numerous reasons (insufficient spatial resolution, vegetation or cloud opacity, limited time-frequency or time-record, information content of the instrument, lack in global retrieval method, interpretability of results, etc.). In this paper, we use 17 years of the MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer) observations at a 8-day resolution. This satellite dataset is combined with ground expertise to analyse the evolution of surface waters at the Cambodia/Vietnam border in the Upper Mekong Delta. The trends and evolution of surface waters are very significant and contrasted, illustrating the impact of agriculture practices and dykes construction. In most of the study area in Cambodia. surface water areas show a decreasing trend but with a strong inter-annual variability. In specific areas, an increase of the wet surfaces is even observed. Ground expertise and historical knowledge of the development of the territory enable to link the decrease to ongoing excavation of drainage canals and the increase of deforestation and land reclamation, exposing flooded surfaces previously hidden by vegetation cover. By contrast, in Vietnam, the decreasing trend in wet surfaces is very clear and can be explained by the development of dykes dating back to the 1990s with an acceleration in the late 2000s as part of a national strategy of agriculture intensification. Abstract

Small reservoirs have traditionally been used worldwide to store surface water, but they are complex to manage. Accounting for a water resource scattered across thousands of water bodies remains challenging. Images acquired using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are already used in different ways in hydrology, could provide additional support. We evaluated the use of UAVs as an alternative way to derive bathymetric data from the topography of a small reservoir. Digital elevation models (DEMs, 58) were produced from UAV imagery and in-situ differential global positioning system (DGPS) points using standard structure from motion (SfM) and interpolation methods. Image processing was able to produce DEMs with 10 times the vertical accuracy of DGPS-point interpolation methods for similar accuracy in determining the relationships between the water height, surface area, and reservoir volume. Abstract

This book has been published by Allenvi (French National Alliance for Environmental Research) to coincide with the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) in Marrakesh. It is the outcome of work by academic researchers on both sides of the Mediterranean and provides a remarkable scientific review of the mechanisms of climate change and its impacts on the environment, the economy, health and Mediterranean societies. It will also be valuable in developing responses that draw on “scientific evidence” to address the issues of adaptation, resource conservation, solutions and risk prevention. Reflecting the full complexity of the Mediterranean environment, the book is a major scientific contribution to the climate issue, where various scientific considerations converge to break down the boundaries between disciplines.

Abstract

Socio-hydrology advanced the field of hydrology by considering humans and their activities as part of the water cycle, rather than as external drivers. Models are used to infer reproducible trends in human interactions with water resources. However, defining and handling water problems in this way may restrict the scope of such modeling approaches. We propose an interdisciplinary socio-hydrological approach to overcome this limit and complement modeling approaches. It starts from concrete field-based situations, combines disciplinary as well as local knowledge on water-society relationships, with the aim of broadening the hydrocentric analysis and modeling of water systems. The paper argues that an analysis of social dynamics linked to water is highly complementary to traditional hydrological tools but requires a negotiated and contextualized interdisciplinary approach to the representation and analysis of socio-hydro systems. This reflection emerged from experience gained in the field where a water-budget modeling framework failed to adequately incorporate the multiplicity of (nonhydrological) factors that determine the volumes of withdrawals for irrigation. The pathway subsequently explored was to move away from the hydrologic view of the phenomena and, in collaboration with social scientists, to produce a shared conceptualization of a coupled human-water system through a negotiated approach. This approach changed the way hydrological research issues were addressed and limited the number of strong assumptions needed for simplification in modeling. The proposed socio-hydrological approach led to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind local water-related problems and to debates on the interactions between social and political decisions and the dynamics of these problems. Plain Language Summary This paper provides a collective reflection on the ways to articulate an understanding of social dynamics within hydrological approaches, based on interdisciplinary experience gained in the field in North Africa. Fundamentally, the socio-hydrological approach proposed here enabled a better understanding of the mechanisms behind human-water dynamics and hence of the impacts of social and political decisions on future changes. The major shift in this interdisciplinary approach is that it provides evidence that things do not simply interact in a positive or negative way, but also combine and shape together. So we need to look for pragmatic ways to link the analysis of social dynamics with the understanding of the hydrological processes. This requires hydrology to open up further to different approaches and methods used in other scientific disciplines, especially human sciences. This could lead to a radically innovative way of conceiving and representing coupled human-water systems.

Abstract

In central Tunisia, near the city of Kairouan, the Merguellil catchment illustrates the multiple forms of the global change affecting Mediterranean water resources. In this semi-arid region, climatic fluctuations have always constrained the water resources, but anthropization has become by far the most influential driver of change in the last century. Environmental and social components of this fragile system continuously interact and adapt to multiple internal and external stresses (including demographic pressure and economic development). Long-term hydrological monitoring, the analysis of historical archives, surveys among the population and water managers reveal the multiple steps to the present state of general groundwater depletion. In the upstream part of the catchment, the numerous water and soil conservation works significantly reduce surface runoff and river flow, which increases withdrawals for irrigation and the groundwater overexploitation since one century to meet the coastal water demand. The large El Haouareb dam definitively prevented the direct recharge of the Kairouan plain aquifer through floods, and created a new recharge location and process. Downstream, the intense development of irrigation in the Kairouan plain relies exclusively on the large and thick Neogene aquifer, contributing to the continuous decrease of the water table (0.5 / 1 m per year). The various long term data sets outlined the spatio-temporal heterogeneity, the complex modifications of groundwater recharge, and the co-evolutions of water users and uses. Many uncertainties still remain, especially regarding the water balance, the influence of extreme climatic events and the groundwater quality, limiting accurate forecasts for the next decades.

Abstract

Au cours d'un atelier, qui a eu lieu à Montpellier en décembre 2015, destiné à partager des expériences de recherche sur un objet hydroagricole, le petit barrage, une vingtaine de chercheurs d'horizons disciplinaires variés ont interrogé leurs pratiques et conceptions de l'interdisciplinarité entre sciences de la nature et sciences de la société. Cette expérience exploratoire a mis en lumière deux postures interdisciplinaires différentes. La première repose sur la recherche d'interfaces et de complémentarités entre les disciplines pour documenter ensemble des objets complexes. La seconde se construit plutôt dans l'exploration des limites des disciplines pour identifier de nouveaux fronts de recherche à l'intersection des approches en présence. Alors que l'interdisciplinarité est souvent déclinée au singulier, cet atelier nous invite à la penser au pluriel à travers les différentes pratiques qui nourrissent le processus de construction de l'interaction entre personnes.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]BELCA; International audience; Une étude des assemblages diatomiques des sites Aïn Bou Rkhiss et Aïn Kibrit, deux sources qui prennent naissance dans le lit de l’Oued Merguellil, et Aïn Ben Ali, un puits situé dans les massifs adjacents (District de Kairouan, Tunisie Centrale), a été menée en décembre 2014 et février 2016. Quelques paramètres physico-chimiques ont été mesurés sur ces sites lors des prélèvements diatomiques. Les deux sources Bou Rkhiss et Kibrit sont proches l’une de l’autre, mais ont des caractéristiques et des usages bien distincts (p. ex., respectivement, eau potable à usage domestique et eau sulfureuse, se mélangeant naturellement à l’eau de l’oued qui sert à l’irrigation), alors que l’eau du puits Ben Ali est à usage domestique et pour les troupeaux. Les objectifs de cette étude visaient à comparer les assemblages diatomiques de trois points d’eau proches géographiquement, de caractériser leur statut écologique et tester la qualité biologique des eaux à l’aide d’indices diatomiques normalisés en France (IBD, Afnor 2007). Les assemblages de cyanobactéries ont également été étudiés. Nous abordons les origines hydrogéologiques de ces points d’eau, bien que non encore parfaitement identifiées, et nous discutons de deux aspects concernant la façon dont les populations vivant à proximité de ces sources les perçoivent : angoisse d’être privés de leurs droits (Aïn Bou Rkhiss est considérée par les populations comme un approvisionnement en eau sûr et de très bonne qualité) et connaissances locales de la circulation des eaux souterraines. Les qualités d’eaux estimées à l’aide de l’IBD reflètent parfois des situations plus pessimistes que celles attendues par les utilisateurs locaux. Les causes sont à rechercher dans les limites de cet indice : méconnaissance des situations de référence, inadéquation de ces méthodes conçues pour des eaux douces européennes sans prise en compte des formes tropicales ou subtropicales. En outre, la juxtaposition dans les cortèges de diatomées de formes oligotrophes, (Achnanthidium, Crenotia, Brachysira), saprophiles (Nitzschia spp.) ou halophiles dans les sources sulfureuses (Entomoneis, Pleurosigma, Haslea, Tabularia,…) entraîne une certaine variabilité spatiale et temporelle des estimations en fonction des dominantes, qui affecte la fiabilité du diagnostic. Les résultats acquis sur ces points d’eau permettent de nuancer l’appréciation des riverains, mais les calculs devraient être affinés par une prospection plus large et des comparaisons avec d’autres sources tunisiennes de référence.
