The aim was to evaluate the effect of dietary addition of a polyherbal phytogenic (Animunin) on the productive performance and blood biochemistry in finishing lambs. Forty Hampshire × Suffolk males lambs (initial body weight 26.52 ± 2.13 kg) were allocated according to a completely randomized design in four treatments. Treatments consisted of dietary inclusion of the Animunin at 0, 1, 2, and 3 g kg−1 dry matter (DM). Animunin addition was not modified (p > 0.05) the productive performance, DM intake, backfat thickness, chop area, energy and protein metabolites, or liver enzymes. While hematocrit, hemoglobin and erythrocytes showed a quadratic response (p ≤ 0.05) with Animunin. The polyherbal phytogenic evaluated did not improve lamb’s productive performance and metabolites related with immune response, El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto de la adición dietaría de un fitogénico poliherbal (Animunin) sobre el comportamiento productivo y la bioquímica sanguínea en corderos. Se utilizaron 40 corderos machos Hampshire × Suffolk con peso vivo inicial de 26.52 ± 2.13 kg, distribuidos en un diseño completamente al azar en cuatro tratamientos. Los tratamientos fueron la inclusión de Animunin a 0, 1, 2 y 3 g kg−1 de materia seca (MS). La adición de Animunin no modifico (p > 0.05) el comportamiento productivo, el consumo de MS, el espesor de grasa dorsal, el área de la chuleta, los metabolitos energéticos y proteicos, o las enzimas hepáticas. Mientras que el hematocrito, la hemoglobina y los eritrocitos mostraron una respuesta cuadrática (p ≤ 0.05) a la adición de Animunin. El fitogénico poliherbal no mejoró el comportamiento productivo ni los metabolitos relacionados con la respuesta inmune de corderos.

The objective of this study was to determine the dietary overlapbetween white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and other herbivores (lago-morphs, cattle, and horses). Vegetation and excreta found in 15 transects 300 mlong and 6 m wide were sampled. Using the micro histological technique, a plantreference catalog was elaborated and the fecal samples by species were analyzedto determine the botanical composition of the diet. It can be seen that, of 65 plantspecies collected presumably consumable by cervids, only 16 were consumed bythem. The microhistological analysis revealed that the diet of deer and lagomorphscoincides in a single arboreal species, a shrub and a herbaceous one; However,in the diet of lagomorphs, the consumption of these three plant groups representsmore than 50% of the diet, while, in the case of horses and cattle, the diet consistedmainly of a single species of herbaceous or grasses, respectively. The Pianka indexbetween white-tailed deer and lagomorphs was 0.26, while compared to cattle andhorses it was 0.04 in both cases. As expected from microhistological analysis,the dietary overlap between deer and other herbivore species was relatively low.However, the overlap between white-tailed deer and lagomorphs is 26% andconsidering the estimated number of individuals in the UMA it may be an importantelement of competition., El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la superposición de la dieta entre el venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus) y otros herbívoros  (lagomorfos, bovinos y equinos) caracterizando la dieta tanto de los cérvidos como la de los lagomorfos de la región. Se muestreó la vegetación y excretas encontradas en 15 transectos de 300 m de largo y 6 m de ancho. Mediante la técnica micro histológica se elaboró un catálogo de referencia vegetal y se analizaron las muestras fecales por especie para determinar la composición botánica de la dieta. De las 65 especies vegetales recolectadas presuntamente consumibles por los cérvidos, solo 16 fueron consumidas por estos. El análisis micro histológico reveló que la dieta de venados y lagomorfos coincide en una sola especie arbórea, un arbusto y una herbácea; pero, para los lagomorfos, el consumo de estos tres grupos vegetales representa más del 50% de la dieta; mientras que, para los caballos y bovinos, la dieta estuvo formada por una sola especie de herbáceas o gramíneas, respectivamente. El índice de Pianka entre el venado cola blanca y los lagomorfos fue de 0.26, mientras que en comparación con el ganado bovino y equino fue de 0.04 en ambos casos. Como se esperaba del análisis micro histológico, la superposición de la dieta entre los ciervos y otras especies de herbívoros fue relativamente baja. Sin embargo, el traslape entre venado cola blanca y lagomorfos es del 26% y considerando el número estimado de individuos en la UMA puede ser un elemento de competencia importante.&nbsp

Objective. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the feed intake, digestibility and growth of pigs fed with two feeds (A and K) specially formulated for this species and a commercial feed for growing rabbits with supplementation of vitamin C (RF+VC). Materials and methods. Eighteen Guinea pigs of 248±38 g initial body weight were distributed in a completely randomized design with factorial arrangement 3×2 (dietary treatments and sex). Feed and neutral detergent fiber intake, weight gain, feed/gain, and morphometric variables were measured individually for 30 days. Dry matter and neutral detergent fiber digestibility were measured during the last seven days of the experiment. Results. There were no differences on feed intake (p=0.88); however, the dry matter digestibility was higher (p<0.01) in feeds formulated for Guinea pigs (A and K) and lower in the rabbit feed plus vitamin C. The intake and digestibility of NDF were higher in the RF+VC and lower in feeds for Guinea pigs (p< 0.01). The average daily gain was similar among the treatments (p>0.05). There were no differences (p>0.01) in the morphometric variables among dietary treatments, but there were sex differences as the males were bigger than the females (p<0.01). Conclusions. The results indicate that Guinea pigs can be fed with rabbit feed supplemented with vitamin C., RESUMEN Objetivo. Evaluar el consumo, la digestibilidad y el crecimiento de cuyes alimentados con dos alimentos (A y K) formulados para esta especie y un alimento para conejos en crecimiento con suplementación de vitamina C (AC+VC). Materiales y métodos. Dieciocho cuyes (Cavia porcellus) de 248±38 g de peso vivo inicial se distribuyeron en un diseño completamente al azar con un arreglo factorial 3 × 2 (tipo de alimento y género). La ingesta de alimento, fibra detergente neutro, el aumento de peso, la conversión alimenticia, y los cambios en las variables morfométricas se midieron diariamente, mientras que la digestibilidad de la MS y FDN se determinaron al final del periodo. Resultados. No hubo diferencias en el consumo de MS (p=0.88); sin embargo, la digestibilidad de la MS fue mayor (p<0.01) en los alimentos para cuyes e inferior en AC+VC. El consumo y digestibilidad de FDN fueron mayores en AC+VC (p<0.01). La ganancia diaria fue similar entre los tratamientos (p>0.05). No hubo diferencias (p>0.01) en las variables morfométricas entre los alimentos, pero los machos fueron más grandes que las hembras (p<0.01). Conclusiones. Los cuyes pueden ser alimentados con alimento de conejo suplementado con vitamina C.

Objective. Evaluate multinutritional blocks with and without calcium propionate (Ca-Pr) on digestibility and live weight changes of lambs and in the green house emission in vitro. Materials and methods. Twelve lambs were used (20.17±2.35 Katahdin x criollo) in three treatments: Basal diet (BD 70% oat straw, 30% concentrate), BD+ Block without Ca-Pr and BD+ Block with 1.5% Ca-Pr in 50 days assay. In vitro gas production (GP) and kinetic parameters were estimated (Vmax, S, Lag). In vitro and in vivo, CH4, CO2 and digestibility were estimated. Results. The dry matter intake was the lowest (p<0.0001) in lambs without block (753 g/d) compared lambs supplemented with block without (839 g) or with Ca-Pr (828 g); including blocks increased methane (16.16 and 16.18 g/d; 0 and 1.5% Ca-Pr respectively) than BD (13.93 g/d). The GP in vitro was higher (p=0.0001) with BD (380.76, ml) than with blocks without differences among blocks (335.76 and 341.13 ml, 0 and 1.5% Ca-Pr respectively), and the BD had higher (p=0.0001) production of CH4 (47.16 mol) and CO2 (200.04 mol) than with blocks (42.25 and 41.58 mol CH4; 179.21 and 176.39 mol CO2; 0 and 1.5% Ca-Pr respectively). Conclusions. Block supplementation improved dry matter intake. Blocks reduced in vitro gas production and increased digestibility by reducing CH4 and CO2., RESUMEN Objetivo. Evaluar bloques multinutricionales con y sin propionato de calcio (Pr-Ca) en la digestibilidad y cambios de peso de corderos y en la emisión de gases in vitro. Materiales y métodos. Se utilizaron doce borregos (20.17 ± 2.35 Katahdin x criollo) en tres tratamientos: Dieta basal (DB 70% paja de avena; 30% concentrado), DB+ Bloque sin Pr-Ca y DB + Bloque con 1.5% de Pr-Ca, por 50 días. Se midió producción de gas (PG) in vitro y parâmetros de cinética (Vmax, S, Lag). Se estimó la digestibilidad, CH4 y CO2 in vitro e in vivo. Resultados. El consumo de materia seca fue menor (p<0.0001) en borregos sin bloque (753 g/d) en comparación con bloque sin (839 g) o con Pr-Ca (828 g) al incluir bloques aumentó metano (16.16 y 16.18 g/d; 0 y 1.5% Pr-Ca respectivamente) que con DB (13.93 g/d). La PG in vitro fue mayor (p=0.0001) con la DB (380.76 ml) sin diferencias entre bloques (335.76 y 341.13 ml, 0 y 1.5% Pr-Ca respectivamente), y la DB tuvo mayor (p=0.0001) producción de CH4 (47.16 mol) y CO2 (200.04 mol) que con bloques (42.25 y 41.58 mol CH4; 179.21 y 176.39 moles CO2; 0 y 1.5% Ca-Pr respectivamente). Conclusiones. La suplementación con bloques mejora el consumo de materia seca. Los bloques disminuyeron la producción de gas in vitro e incrementaron la digestibilidad reduciendo CH4 y CO2.

The effect of the urea level of the fermented supplement Sacchapulido (SP) on the degradation of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) was evaluated. The pH, N-NH3 and in situ and effective degradation (ID and ED respectively) were determined, as well as the kinetic parameters of dry matter (DM), NDF and ADF of the forage. Five fistulated bovines were used in a 5 x 5 Latin square design. The standard deviation indicated that the supplements have between 0.5 and 1.0% urea; they contributed 10% more biomass due to the increase in size of the potentially degradable fraction of the feed, both in the NDF and cellular content. Due to the cost of urea, the use of SP with 0.5% urea is recommended., Se evaluó el efecto del nivel de urea sobre la degradación del pasto Elefante (Pennisetum purpureum) en el suplemento fermentado, Sacchapulido (SP). Se determinó el pH, N-NH3, la degradación in situ (DI) y efectiva (DE), así como, los parámetros cinéticos de materia seca (MS), FDN y FDA del forraje. Se utilizaron cinco bovinos fistulados en rumen en un diseño cuadro Latino 5x5. La DE indicó que los suplementos que tienen entre 0.5 y 1.0% de urea, aportaron un 10% más de biomasa por el aumento de tamaño de la fracción potencialmente degradable (PD) del alimento, tanto en la FDN, como en el contenido celular. Debido al costo de la urea, se recomienda el uso del SP con 0.5% de urea.

Introduction: The objective was to determine the relationship between the serum concentrations of Calcium (Ca2+), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and insulin 10 days prepartum with losses in milk yield (MY) at 10 and 20 days of lactation. Method: Two hundred forty-three Holstein-Friesian cows (780 ± 36 kg PV, with more than two lactations) were sampled by coccygeal puncture several times before, during and after parturition. Results: When Ca2+ levels were low 10 days before parturition and were related to MY at 10 days postpartum, it was observed that 77.11% of the cows lost 2.20 kg of milk; while on day 20, 66.41% of the cows lost 1.40 kg animal-1 day-1. In contrast, when NEFA were high 10 days before calving and were related to MY, 67.40% of cows showed a risk of losing 0.80 kg, whereas at 20 days postpartum, 22.00% of cows lost approximately 0.90 kg cow-1 day-1. The determination of low prepartum insulin and MY on days 10 and 20 of lactation indicated that 6.02% of cows lost 0.80 and 0.70 kg of milk-1 animal-1 day-1 for days 10 and 20 of lactation. Conclusion: In conclusion, low blood levels of calcium, high levels of NEFA, and low insulin 10 days before parturition were associated with milk yield losses at 10 and 20 days after parturition. It was also observed that low calcium could cause greater milk losses than excesses of non-esterified fatty acids and serum low insulin concentrations., Resumen Introducción: El objetivo fue determinar la relación entre las concentraciones séricas de calcio (Ca2+), ácidos grasos no esterificados (AGNE) e insulina preparto con pérdidas en la producción de leche (PL) en el inicio de la lactancia. Método: Doscientas cuarenta y tres vacas Holstein-Friesian (780 ± 36 kg PV; con más de dos lactancias) fueron muestreadas por punción coccígea varias veces antes, durante y después del parto. Para cada muestreo y cada metabolito, las concentraciones séricas se estratificaron con umbrales y se relacionaron con la PL. Resultados: Cuando los niveles de Ca2+ fueron bajos 10 días antes del parto y se relacionaron con la PL a los 10 días posparto, se observó que el 77.11% de las vacas perdieron 2.20 kg de leche; mientras en el día 20, el 66.41% de las vacas perdieron 1.40 kg animal-1 día-1. Por el contrario, cuando los AGNE fueron altos 10 días antes de parto y se relacionaron con PL, 67.40% de las vacas mostraron riesgo de perder 0.80 kg, mientras que a los 20 días posparto, el 22.00% de las vacas perdieron aproximadamente 0.90 kg vaca-1 día-1.
