Secondary organic aerosols contribute a large fraction to atmospheric aerosols. The phase states of secondary organic aerosols influence heterogeneous and multiphase chemistry in the atmosphere and thus climate. In previous studies we have used the dual tandem differential mobility analyzer technique to characterize the temperature- and humidity-dependent viscosity and glass transition temperature of suspended particles. However, the technique requires high particle number concentrations, is a complex setup, is expensive, and measurements are time consuming. Here we demonstrate a new simplified and more cost-effective method to obtain similar data. The technique was used to measure the temperature where the viscosity is ∼107 Pa s for submicron particles composed of binary and ternary mixtures of the sucrose/tartaric acid/citric acid system. Sucrose, tartaric acid and citric acid are taken as proxies for viscous organic aerosol components in the atmosphere. A subset of data were compared to measurements with the dual-tandem differential mobility analyzer method. Results show good agreement between the two techniques. The same mixed chemical systems were modeled using an updated version of the parametric phase diagram model described in Kasparoglu et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp-21-1127-2021) as well as the predictions with the viscosity module of the Aerosol Inorganic-Organic Mixtures Functional groups Activity Coefficients model (AIOMFAC-VISC). Results show that appropriately parameterized mixing rules are suitable to describe these mixtures. We anticipate that the new technique will accelerate discovery of aerosol phase transitions in aerosol research.

The Arctic is a region that is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, as it is warming at a faster rate than the rest of the world. This warming causes a decline in multiyear sea ice cover, which results in an increasing open-ocean surface with a much lower albedo therefore leading to positive feedback and enhanced warming. Another factor that plays a role in regulating the temperature in the Arctic is the type and extent of cloud cover. Aerosols that can serve as cloud condensation nuclei or ice nucleating particles (INPs) are key for cloud formation. Some microorganisms are known to produce INPs, but it is not well understood which microorganisms are responsible, which environments they inhabit, and how active they are. In this study, we set out to investigate the partitioning of INPs between the Arctic marine and atmospheric environment by combining in situ measurements with laboratory experiments.First, we wanted to determine if sea ice acts as a reservoir for INPs and, if so, whether the INPs are partitioned into the sea ice during its formation or produced by microorganisms within the sea ice. We used a modified ice-finger to grow sea ice using natural samples from West Greenland and found that INPs concentrate into the ice fraction during sea-ice formation, and that these INPs typically are associated with microorganisms.Next, we wanted to understand the temporal and spatial dynamics of INPs in Arctic sea ice. We collected sea ice cores from the Arctic before and during the spring sea ice phytoplankton bloom and analysed them using cold-stage INP measurements, flow-cytometry, and amplicon sequencing. The results showed that there are between 106 · L-1 (at the bottom of the sea ice) INP-10 present in the Arctic sea ice. Finally, we wanted to determine the potential contribution of sea ice to the atmospheric INP pool in the Arctic. We introduced natural samples of bulk water and sea ice from Nuuk and Station Nord into a temperature-controlled sea spray simulation chamber and quantified the microorganisms and INPs present in the bulk water, surface microlayer and air before and after aerosolization. The results showed that the highly active INPs are efficiently aerosolized into the atmosphere during bubble-bursting where they may contribute to the formation of ice in clouds.Overall, this study provides new insight into the role of Arctic sea ice as a reservoir for INPs and the microorganisms that produce them, as well as the mechanisms by which INPs are released into the Arctic atmosphere. This information is important for understanding the impact of climate change on the Arctic region and the potential consequences for the rest of the world.

Clouds have one of the most profound effects on Earth’s climate, yet they are still responsible for some of the biggest uncertainties in climate models. Cloud formation, radiative properties, thickness and lifetime are tightly interlinked with the presence of atmospheric particles (aerosols) and the formation of ice. Biological aerosols (bioaerosols) such as ice-nucleation proteins (INpro) produced by microorganisms are most efficient catalysts in the formation of ice and can trigger heterogenous freezing between -1°C and -15°C. Several studies have demonstrated that Arctic environments are a source of airborne INpro. Sea spray is one of the major sources of aerosols, which aside of the sea salt contain large amounts of organic material. These are ejected into the atmosphere through the process of wave breaking and bubble bursting of small bubbles, which eject drops from the sea surface microlayer (SML) to the atmosphere. Here, we present results derived from droplet freezing assays and amplicon sequencing combined with quantitative PCR, targeting the 16S rRNA gene from sea and aerosol samples collected along a transect from sub- to high Arctic Greenland (Baffin Bay). We demonstrate a positive correlation between INpro concentration and higher latitudes in sea bulk water (SBW) and SML. Additionally, we try to link specific taxonomic groups from the microbial communities to INpro production. Last, we aim to investigate if partitioning of specific taxonomic groups can be observed from SBW to SML and from SML to the atmosphere. Finally, we performed laboratorial sea-spray experiments simulating turbulent sea conditions. This study has the potential to help closing the current knowledge gap in understanding the partitioning of microorganisms from the sea to the atmosphere and unravel which microbes are the major contributors to atmospheric INpro and hence cloud formation.

The Portable Ice Nucleation Chamber 2 (PINCii) is a newly developed continuous flow diffusion chamber (CFDC) for measuring ice nucleating particles (INPs). PINCii is a vertically-oriented parallel plate CFDC that has been engineered to improve upon limitations of previous generations of portable CFDCs. This work presents a detailed description of the PINCii instrument and the upgrades that make it unique compared to other operational CFDCs. The PINCii design offers several possibilities for improved INP measurements. Notably, a specific icing procedure results in low background particle counts, which demonstrates the potential for PINCii to measure INPs in very low concentrations. High spatial resolution walltemperature mapping enables the identification of temperature inhomogeneities on the chamber walls. This feature is used to introduce and discuss a new method to analyze CFDC data. A temperature gradient can be maintained throughout the evaporation section in addition to the main chamber, which enables PINCii to be used to study droplet activation processes or to extend ice crystal growth. A series of both liquid droplet activation and ice nucleation experiments were conducted at temperature and saturation conditions that span the spectrum of PINCii’s operational conditions (−50 ≤ temperature ≤ −15 °C and 100 ≤ relative humidity with respect to ice ≤ 160 %) to demonstrate the capabilities of PINCii. In addition, typical sources of uncertainty in CFDCs, including particle background, particle loss, and variations in aerosol lamina temperature and relative humidity, are quantified and discussed for PINCii.

The formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from the structurally similar monoterpenes, α-pinene and Δ3-carene, differs substantially. The aerosol phase is already complex for a single precursor, and when mixtures are oxidized, products, e.g., dimers, may form between different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This work investigates whether differences in SOA formation and properties from the oxidation of individual monoterpenes persist when a mixture of the monoterpenes is oxidized. Ozonolysis of α-pinene, Δ3-carene, and a 1:1 mixture of them was performed in the Aarhus University Research on Aerosol (AURA) atmospheric simulation chamber. Here, ∼100 ppb of monoterpene was oxidized by 200 ppb O3 under dark conditions at 20 °C. The particle number concentration and particle mass concentration for ozonolysis of α-pinene exceed those from ozonolysis of Δ3-carene alone, while their mixture results in concentrations similar to α-pinene ozonolysis. Detailed offline analysis reveals evidence of VOC-cross-product dimers in SOA from ozonolysis of the monoterpene mixture: a VOC-cross-product dimer likely composed of the monomeric units cis-caric acid and 10-hydroxy-pinonic acid and a VOC-cross-product dimer ester likely from the monomeric units caronaldehyde and terpenylic acid were tentatively identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. To improve the understanding of chemical mechanisms determining SOA, it is relevant to identify VOC-cross-products.

The formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from the structurally similar monoterpenes, α-pinene and Δ

Particulate matter is linked to adverse health effects, however, little is known about health effects of particles emitted from typical indoor sources. We examined acute health effects of short-term exposure to emissions from cooking and candles among asthmatics. In a randomized controlled double-blinded crossover study, 36 young non-smoking asthmatics attended three exposure sessions lasting 5 h: (a) air mixed with emissions from cooking (fine particle mass concentration): (PM2.5: 96.1 μg/m3), (b) air mixed with emissions from candles (PM2.5: 89.8 μg/m3), and c) clean filtered air (PM2.5: 5.8 μg/m3). Health effects (spirometry, fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide [FeNO], nasal volume and self-reported symptoms) were evaluated before exposure start, then 5 and 24 h after. During exposures volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particle size distributions, number concentrations and optical properties were measured. Generally, no statistically significant changes were observed in spirometry, FeNO, or nasal volume comparing cooking and candle exposures to clean air. In males, nasal volume and FeNO decreased after exposure to cooking and candles, respectively. Participants reported additional and more pronounced symptoms during exposure to cooking and candles compared to clean air. The results indicate that emissions from cooking and candles exert mild inflammation in asthmatic males and decrease comfort among asthmatic males and females.

Sampling the shallow free energy surface of hydrated atmospheric molecular clusters is a significant challenge. Using computational methods, we present an efficient approach to obtain minimum free energy structures for large hydrated clusters of atmospheric relevance. We study clusters consisting of two to four sulfuric acid (sa) molecules and hydrate them with up to five water (w) molecules. The structures of the "dry" clusters are obtained using the ABCluster program to yield a large pool of low-lying conformer minima with respect to free energy. The conformers (up to ten) lowest in free energy are then hydrated using our recently developed systematic hydrate sampling technique. Using this approach, we identify a total of 1145 unique (sa)(2-4)(w)(1-5) cluster structures. The cluster geometries and thermochemical parameters are calculated at the omega B97X-D/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory, at 298.15 K and 1 atm. The single-point energy of the most stable clusters is calculated using a high-level DLPNO-CCSD(T-0)/aug-cc-pVTZ method. Using the thermochemical data, we calculate the equilibrium hydrate distribution of the clusters under atmospheric conditions and find that the larger (sa)(3) and (sa)(4) clusters are significantly more hydrated than the smaller (sa)(2) cluster or the sulfuric acid (sa)(1) molecule. These findings indicate that more than five water molecules might be required to fully saturate the sulfuric acid clusters with water under atmospheric conditions. The presented methodology gives modelers a tool to take the effect of water explicitly into account in atmospheric particle formation models based on quantum chemistry.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is emitted by phytoplankton species in the oceans and constitutes the largest source of naturally emitted sulfur to the atmosphere. The climate impact of secondary particles, formed through the oxidation of DMS by hydroxyl radicals, is still elusive. This study investigates the hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei activity of such particles and discusses the results in relation to their chemical composition. We show that mean hygroscopicity parameters, κ, during an experiment for particles of 80 nm in diameter range from 0.46 to 0.52 or higher, as measured at both sub- and supersaturated water vapour conditions. Ageing of the particles leads to an increase in κ from, for example, 0.50 to 0.58 over the course of 3 h (Exp. 7). Aerosol mass spectrometer measurements from this study indicate that this change most probably stems from a change in chemical composition leading to slightly higher fractions of ammonium sulfate compared to methanesulfonic acid (MSA) within the particles with ageing time. Lowering the temperature to 258 K increases κ slightly, particularly for small particles. These κ values are well comparable to previously reported model values for MSA or mixtures between MSA and ammonium sulfate. Particle nucleation and growth rates suggest a clear temperature dependence, with slower rates at cold temperatures. Quantum chemical calculations show that gas-phase MSA clusters are predominantly not hydrated, even at high humidity conditions, indicating that their gas-phase chemistry should be independent of relative humidity.

Sea spray aerosol is the largest natural source of aerosol to Earth's atmosphere with significant impacts on climate. Despite this, estimates of the impact of sea spray aerosol on Earth's radiation budget are highly uncertain due to an overall lack of understanding of the physical and chemical factors controlling its composition. Critically, results from studies probing the importance of oceanic biological activity on the amount and type of organic matter present in nascent sea spray aerosol have been ambiguous. Some field studies have shown a relationship between the organic fraction of sea spray aerosol and oceanic primary productivity while others have reported no such relationships. Given this, we have probed the composition of seawater and nascent sea spray aerosol during a phytoplankton bloom in the North Atlantic using a novel liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method. We observed that the composition of dissolved organic matter present in seawater changed as the phytoplankton bloom progressed over an 18 day period. Further, we observed changes to both the chemical composition of the organic matter present in seawater and the chemical composition of the organic matter present in the sea spray aerosol despite the organic matter mass fraction of the aerosol remaining unchanged. More specifically, we observed that the nascent sea spray aerosol became progressively more enriched in surface-active organic substances as the bloom progressed and that the sea spray aerosol had a distinct organic matter composition compared to the seawater. Thus, our work provides additional insight into the biological dependence of nascent sea spray aerosol composition.

Magnesium and calcium chloride salts contribute to the global atmospheric aerosol burden via emission of sea spray and mineral dust. Their influence on aerosol hygroscopicity and cloud forming potential is important but uncertain with ambiguities between results reported in the literature. To address this, we have conducted measurements of the hygroscopic growth and critical supersaturation of dried, size selected nano-particles made from aqueous solution droplets of MgCl2 and CaCl2, respectively, and compare experimentally derived values with results from state-of-the-art thermodynamic modelling. It is characteristic of both MgCl2 and CaCl2 salts that they bind water in the form of hydrates under a range of ambient conditions. We discuss how hydrate formation affects the particles' water uptake and provide an expression for hydrate correction factors needed in calculations of hygroscopic growth factors, critical super-saturations, and derived κ values of particles containing hydrate forming salts. We demonstrate the importance of accounting for hydrate forming salts when predicting hygroscopic properties of sea spray aerosol.

On the basis of recent advances in battery research and technology, we have developed a novel laboratory exercise centered on an organic–inorganic battery using the redox chemistry of the organic molecule anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonic acid disodium salt (AQDS). Although most commercially available batteries are based on inorganic redox couples, the development of batteries based on organic redox active materials has great potential for stationary energy storage. As such, the experiment described in this report exposes students to state-of-the-art battery technology, despite a rather simple experimental protocol. The exercise allows students to acquire hands-on learning and visualize central concepts of the Nernst equation, battery technology and components, half-cell reactions, charging/discharging tests, and performance analysis. Additionally, students are required to operate a range of key electronic instruments, including multimeters, power supplies, and electronic loads. This laboratory exercise is part of a third semester undergraduate course in physical chemistry and can be completed in a single laboratory session. Student feedback shows that the experimental work, coupled with a written report, significantly broadens student understanding of the electrochemistry of batteries.

Emissions from candles are of concern for indoor air quality. In this work, five different types of pillar candles were burned under steady burn conditions in a new laboratory scale system for repeatable and controlled comparison of candle emissions (temperature ~25°C, relative humidity ~13%, O2 >18%, air exchange rate 1.9 h−1). Burn rate, particle number concentrations, mass concentrations, and mode diameters varied between candle types. Based on the results, the burning period was divided in two phases: initial (0–1 h) and stable (1–6 h). Burn rates were in the range 4.4–7.3 and 4.7–7.1 g/h during initial and stable phase, respectively. Relative particle number emissions, mode diameters, and mass concentrations were higher during the initial phase compared to the stable phase for a majority of the candles. We hypothesize that this is due to elevated emissions of wick additives upon ignition of the candle together with a slightly higher burn rate in the initial phase. Experiments at higher relative humidity (~40%) gave similar results with a tendency toward larger particle sizes at the higher relative humidity. Chemical composition with respect to inorganic salts was similar in the emitted particles (dry conditions) compared to the candlewicks, but with variations between different candles.

Burning candles release a variety of pollutants to indoor air, some of which are of concern for human health. We studied emissions of particles and gases from the stressed burning of five types of pillar candles with different wax and wick compositions. The stressed burning was introduced by controlled fluctuating air velocities in a 21.6 m

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is produced by plankton in oceans and constitutes the largest natural emission of sulfur to the atmosphere. In this work, we examine new particle formation from the primary pathway of oxidation of gas-phase DMS by OH radicals. We particularly focus on particle growth and mass yield as studied experimentally under dry conditions using the atmospheric simulation chamber AURA. Experimentally, we show that aerosol mass yields from oxidation of 50–200 ppb of DMS are low (2–7%) and that particle growth rates (8.2–24.4 nm/h) are comparable with ambient observations. An HR-ToF-AMS was calibrated using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) to account for fragments distributed across both the organic and sulfate fragmentation table. AMS-derived chemical compositions revealed that MSA was always more dominant than sulfate in the secondary aerosols formed. Modeling using the Aerosol Dynamics, gas- and particle-phase chemistry kinetic multilayer model for laboratory CHAMber studies (ADCHAM) indicates that the Master Chemical Mechanism gas-phase chemistry alone underestimates experimentally observed particle formation and that DMS multiphase and autoxidation chemistry is needed to explain observations. Based on quantum chemical calculations, we conclude that particle formation from DMS oxidation in the ambient atmosphere will most likely be driven by mixed sulfuric acid/MSA clusters clustering with both amines and ammonia.

Introduction:Breaking waves on the ocean surface lead to sea spray aerosol emission to the atmosphere. Sea spray aerosols are a major source of uncertainty in climate models. The physical processes governing sea spray aerosol production play an important part in determining sea spray aerosol emission, size distribution, and chemical composition. Sea spray often contains organic material, but it is unclear how this material affects the ability of particles to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN).Methods:We have measured the CCN-derived hygroscopicity of different types of aerosol particles generated from the following seawater proxies and real seawater using a sea spray simulation tank (Christiansen et al., 2019), AEGOR, or an atomizer in a laboratory setup (Christiansen et al., 2020): Artificial seawater Artificial seawater spiked with diatoms cultured in the laboratory Samples of sea surface microlayer (SML) collected during field campaigns in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. A continuous supply of fresh seawater during a three-week field campaign (June 2019) on the Faroe Islands, while following oceanic biogeochemical parameters. Large-eddy simulation (LES) has been used to evaluate the general role of aerosol hygroscopicity in governing mixed-phase low-level cloud properties in the high Arctic.Conclusions: We show that sea spray aerosols generated using diatom cultures and surface microlayer water exhibit CCN activity similar to that of inorganic sea salt (κ value of ∼1.0), independent of dry particle size (50, 75, and 100 nm). The critical supersaturation of dry 80 nm SSA was relatively invariable (0.158±0.04%), corresponding to the overall hygroscopicity parameter κ of 1.08±0.05% derived from CCN during the phytoplankton bloom. This is despite indications that the chemical composition of both the seawater and the SSA were impacted by the presence of the phytoplankton. For accumulation mode aerosol, the simulated mixed-phase cloud properties do not depend strongly on κ, unless κ < 0.4. In addition, the cloud is sustained for all simulated cases. For Aitken mode aerosol, the hygroscopicity is more important changing the microphysical structure of the cloud and its radiative properties; here the particles can sustain the cloud only when κ ≥ 0.4. The experimental and model results combined suggest that the internal mixing of biogenic organic components in SSA does not have a substantial impact on the cloud droplet activation process and the cloud lifetime in Arctic mixed-phase clouds.References:Christiansen et al. The two monoterpenes, Δ3-carene and α-pinene, have very similar chemical structures, which leads to the assumption that the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is also similar. This study aims to investigate if the formation of SOA from ozonolysis of Δ3-carene and α-pinene is actually analogous. This is addressed by conducting smog chamber studies of Δ3-carene ozonolysis and comparing the results to similar studies of α-pinene. Detailed offline analysis using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry seeks to elucidate differences in the product distribution between Δ3-carene and α-pinene. The experimental findings are supported by quantum chemical calculations of formation free energies of the first-generation oxidation products, cis-3-caric acid and cis-pinic acid. The smog chamber studies and detailed offline analysis show a considerable difference in the SOA formation from Δ3-carene and α-pinene. Δ3-carene produces higher SOA mass and larger particles, whereas α-pinene produces a larger number of smaller particles. This indicates that Δ3-carene oxidation products tend to condense on already existing particles, whereas α-pinene oxidation products to a larger degree contribute to new particle formation. The detailed offline analysis shows a much less diverse product distribution in Δ3-carene SOA compared to α-pinene SOA. In addition, three dimers from Δ3-carene are identified for the first time. The quantum chemical calculations indicate that cis-3-caric acid is expected to be more efficient in condensing on already existing particles compared to cis-pinic acid, which is in good agreement with the experimental results.

We here reflect on two important articles on stratospheric ozone depletion written by P. J. Crutzen (1974) and P. J. Crutzen and D. H. Ehhalt (1977) in the early 1970s. These articles provide a clear description of the stratosphere and the most important chemical reactions involved in stratospheric ozone depletion. They present modeling results and provide recommendations for future research on stratospheric ozone depletion caused by chloro-fluoro-carbons, supersonic transport, nitrous oxide, and nuclear explosions. These two articles represent the beginning of a scientific era, which led to discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole and political action in the form of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments.

Sea spray aerosol (SSA) contributes significantly to natural aerosol particle concentrations globally, in marine areas even dominantly. The potential changes of the omnipresent inorganic fraction of SSA due to atmospheric ageing is largely unexplored. We demonstrate that ageing of liquid NaCl and artificial sea salt aerosol by exposure to ozone and UV light leads to a substantial decrease in hygroscopicity and cloud activation potential. The results point towards surface reactions that are more crucial for small particles and the formation of salt structures with water bound within the aerosols, termed hydrates. Our findings suggest an increased formation of hydrate forming salts during ageing and the presence of hydrates in dried SSA. Field observations indicate a reduced hygroscopic growth of sub-micrometre SSA in the marine atmosphere compared to pure NaCl which is typically attributed to organic matter or sulphates. Aged inorganic sea salt offers an additional explanation for reduced hygroscopicity and cloud activation potential.

We show that SSA containing diatom and microlayer exhibit similar CCN activity to inorganic sea salt with a κ value of ∼1.0. Large-eddy simulation (LES) is then used to evaluate the general role of aerosol hygroscopicity in governing mixed-phase low-level cloud properties in the high Arctic. For accumulation mode aerosol, the simulated mixed-phase cloud properties do not depend strongly on κ, unless the values are lower than 0.4. For Aitken mode aerosol, the hygroscopicity is more important; the particles can sustain the cloud if the hygroscopicity is equal to or higher than 0.4, but not otherwise. The experimental and model results combined suggest that the internal mixing of biogenic organic components in SSA does not have a substantial impact on the cloud droplet activation process and the cloud lifetime in Arctic mixed-phase clouds.

We report an investigation of the reaction of isotope-substituted hydrated iodide I(HO)

In this study we examine the application of a factor analysis technique for datasets recorded by the chemical ionization instrument Proton Transfer Reaction - Time-of-Flight - Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS). Numerical simulations were carried out to test and optimize the performance of the factorization method Multivariate Curve Resolution - Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS). The simulations demonstrated that the choice of initial estimates for the factor analysis are crucial for the outcome of the factorization. For this purpose we describe a new method based on the Pearson correlation coefficient which, compared to the other tested methods, yields the best factorization results. Overlapping contributions of different substances to a certain mass bin and large uncertainties in the data deteriorate the performance of the factor analysis. The deconvolution technique was also applied to data obtained with a PTR-ToF-MS employed at a smog chamber. The response from single substances (fragmentation patterns) such as α-pinene, α-pinene oxide and pinonaldehyde as well as a more complex experiment involving the ozonolysis of α-pinene are investigated. For the single substances, the factorization method points to the presence of impurities which could be differentiated from the masses affiliated with the actual substances. The α-pinene ozonolysis experiment was analysed with the factorization technique and yielded four factors, one representing the decay of the reactant and three different products. The matrix factorization technique appeared to be a valuable tool allowing for a detailed analysis of complex mass spectra without the need of any prior information.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) plays a central role in air pollution and climate. However, the description of the sources and mechanisms leading to SOA is elusive despite decades of research. While stable isotope analysis is increasingly used to constrain sources of ambient aerosol, in many cases it is difficult to apply because neither the isotopic composition of aerosol precursors nor the fractionation of aerosol forming processes is well characterised. In this paper, SOA formation from ozonolysis of α-pinene – an important precursor and perhaps the best-known model system used in laboratory studies – was investigated using position-dependent and average determinations of 13C in α-pinene and advanced analysis of reaction products using thermal-desorption proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). The total carbon (TC) isotopic composition δ13C of the initial α-pinene was measured, and the δ13C of the specific carbon atom sites was determined using position-specific isotope analysis (PSIA). The PSIA analysis showed variations at individual positions from −6.9 to +10. 5 ‰ relative to the bulk composition. SOA was formed from α-pinene and ozone in a constant-flow chamber under dark, dry, and low-NOx conditions, with OH scavengers and in the absence of seed particles. The excess of ozone and long residence time in the flow chamber ensured that virtually all α-pinene had reacted. Product SOA was collected on two sequential quartz filters. The filters were analysed offline by heating them stepwise from 100 to 400 °C to desorb organic compounds that were (i) detected using PTR-MS for chemical analysis and to determine the O : C ratio, and (ii) converted to CO2 for 13C analysis. More than 400 ions in the mass range 39–800 Da were detected from the desorbed material and quantified using a PTR-MS. The largest amount desorbed at 150 °C. The O : C ratio of material from the front filter increased from 0.18 to 0.25 as the desorption temperature was raised from 100 to 250 °C. At temperatures above 250 °C, the O : C ratio of thermally desorbed material, presumably from oligomeric precursors, was constant. The observation of a number of components that occurred across the full range of desorption temperatures suggests that they are generated by thermal decomposition of oligomers. The isotopic composition of SOA was more or less independent of desorption temperature above 100 °C. TC analysis showed that SOA was enriched in 13C by 0.6–1.2 ‰ relative to the initial α-pinene. According to mass balance, gas-phase products will be depleted relative to the initial α-pinene. Accordingly, organic material on the back filters, which contain adsorbed gas-phase compounds, is depleted in 13C in TC by 0.7 ‰ relative to the initial α-pinene, and by 1.3 ‰ compared to SOA collected on the front filter. The observed difference in 13C between the gas and particle phases may arise from isotope-dependent changes in the branching ratios in the α-pinene + O3 reaction. Alternatively, some gas-phase products involve carbon atoms from highly enriched and depleted sites, as shown in the PSIA analysis, giving a non-kinetic origin to the observed fractionations. In either case, the present study suggests that the site-specific distribution of 13C in the source material itself governs the abundance of 13C in SOA.

In recent years, sea spray and the biological material it contains has received increased attention as a source of ice nucleating particles (INPs). Such INPs may play a role in remote marine regions, where other sources of INPs are scarce or absent. Marine aerosol is of diverse nature, so identifying sources of INPs is challenging. One fraction of marine bioaerosol, phytoplankton and their exudates, has been a particular focus of marine INP research. In our study we attempt to address three main questions. Firstly, we compare the ice nucleating ability of two common phytoplankton species with Arctic seawater microlayer samples using the same instrumentation to see if these phytoplankton species produce ice nucleating material with sufficient activity to account for the ice nucleation observed in Arctic microlayer samples. We present first measurements of the ice nucleating ability of two predominant phytoplankton species, Melosira arctica, a common Arctic diatom species and Skeletonema marinoi, a ubiquitous diatom species across oceans worldwide. To determine the potential effect of nutrient conditions and characteristics of the algal culture, such as the amount of organic carbon associated with algal cells, on the ice nucleation activity, the Skeletonema marinoi was grown under different nutrient regimes. From comparison of the ice nucleation data of the algal cultures to those obtained from a range of sea surface microlayer (SML) samples obtained during three different field expeditions to the Arctic (ACCACIA, NETCARE, ASCOS) we found that although these diatoms do produce ice nucleating material, they were not as ice active as the investigated microlayer samples. Secondly, to improve our understanding of local Arctic marine sources as atmospheric INP we applied several aerosolisation techniques to analyse the ice nucleating ability of aerosolised microlayer and algae samples. The aerosols were generated either by direct nebulisation of the undiluted bulk solutions, or by the addition of the samples to a sea spray simulation chamber filled with artificial seawater. The latter method generates aerosol particles using a plunging jet to mimic the process of oceanic wave-breaking. We observed that the aerosols produced using this approach can be ice active indicating that the ice nucleating material in seawater can indeed transfer to the aerosol phase. Thirdly, we attempted to measure ice nucleation activity across the entire temperature range relevant for mixed-phase clouds using a suite of ice nucleation measurement techniques- an expansion cloud chamber, a continuous flow diffusion chamber, and a cold stage. In order to compare the measurements made using the different instruments, we have normalised the data in relation to the mass of salt present in the nascent sea spray aerosol. At temperatures above 248 K some of the SML samples were very effective at nucleating ice, but there was substantial variability between the different samples. In contrast, there was much less variability between samples below 248 K.

This work investigates the individual and combined effects of temperature and volatile organic compound precursor concentration on the chemical composition of particles formed in the dark ozonolysis of α-pinene. All experiments were conducted in a 5 m3 Teflon chamber at an initial ozone concentration of 100 ppb and α-pinene concentrations of 10 ppb and 50 ppb, respectively, at constant temperatures of 20 °C, 0 °C, or −15 °C, and at changing temperatures (ramps) from −15 °C to 20 °C and from 20 °C to −15 °C. The chemical composition of the particles was probed using a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). A four-factor solution of a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis of combined HR-ToF-AMS data from experiments conducted under different conditions is presented. The PMF analysis as well as elemental composition analysis of individual experiments show that secondary organic aerosol particles with the highest oxidation level are formed from the lowest initial α-pinene concentration (10 ppb) and at the highest temperature (20 °C). Higher initial α-pinene concentration (50 ppb) and/or lower temperature (0 °C or −15 °C) result in lower oxidation level of the molecules contained in the particles. With respect to carbon oxidation state, particles formed at 0 °C are more comparable to particles formed at −15 °C than to those formed at 20 °C. A remarkable observation is that changes in temperature during or after particle formation result in only minor changes in the elemental composition of the particles. The temperature at which aerosol particle formation is initiated thus seems to be a critical parameter for the particle elemental composition. Comparison of the AMS derived estimates of the content of organic acids in the particles based on m/z 44 in the spectra show good agreement with results from off-line molecular analysis of particle filter samples collected from the same experiments. While higher temperatures are associated with a decrease in the absolute mass concentrations of organic acids (R-COOH) and organic acid functionalities (-COOH), the organic acid functionalities account for an increasing fraction of the measured SOA mass at higher temperatures.

Little is known about the effects of low temperatures on the formation of SOA from α-pinene. In the current work, ozone-initiated oxidation of α-pinene at initial concentrations of 10 and 50 ppb, respectively, is performed at temperatures of 20, 0 and −15 °C in the Aarhus University Research on Aerosol (AURA) smog chamber during the Aarhus Chamber Campaign on highly oxidized multifunctional organic molecules and Aerosol (ACCHA). Here, we show how temperature influences the formation and chemical composition of α-pinene-derived SOA with a specific focus on the formation of organic acids and dimer esters. With respect to particle formation, results show significant increase in both particle formation rates, particle number concentrations and particle mass concentrations at lower temperatures. In particular, the number concentrations of sub-10 nm particles were significantly enhanced at the lower 0 and -15 °C temperatures. Temperatures also affect chemical composition of the formed SOA. Here, detailed off-line chemical analyses show organic acids contributing from 15 to 30 % by mass, with highest contributions observed at the lower temperatures indicative of enhanced condensation of these semi-volatile species. In comparison, 30 identified dimer esters contribute between 4–11 % to SOA mass. No significant differences in the chemical composition (i.e. organic acids and dimer esters) of the α-pinene-derived SOA particles are observed between experiments performed at 10 and 50 ppb initial α-pinene concentrations, thus suggesting a higher influence of reaction temperature compared to that of α-pinene loading on the SOA chemical composition. Interestingly, the effect of temperature on the formation of dimer esters differs between the individual species. The formation of less oxidized (oxygen-to-carbon ratio (O:C) < 0.4) dimer esters is shown to increase at lower temperatures while the formation of the more oxidized (O:C > 0.4) species is suppressed, consequently resulting in temperature-modulated composition of the α-pinene derived SOA. Temperature ramping experiments exposing α-pinene-derived SOA to changing temperatures (heating and cooling) reveal that the chemical composition of the SOA with respect to dimer esters is governed almost solely by the temperature during the initial oxidization and insusceptible to subsequent changes in temperature. Similarly, the resulting SOA mass concentrations were found to be more influenced by the initial α-pinene oxidation temperatures, thus suggesting that the formation conditions to a large extent govern the type of SOA formed, rather than the conditions to which the SOA is later exposed. For the first time, we discuss the relation between the identified dimer ester and the highly oxidized multifunctional organic molecules (HOMs) measured by Chemical Ionization Atmospheric Pressure interface Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (CI-APi-TOF) during ACCHA experiments. We propose that, although very different in chemical structures and O:C-ratios, dimer esters and HOMs may be linked through the mechanism of RO2 autoxidation, and that dimer esters and HOMs merely represent two different fates of the RO2 radicals.

Particulate air pollution in China is influencing human health, ecosystem and climate. However, the chemical composition of particulate aerosol, especially of the organic fraction, is still not well understood. In this study, particulate aerosol samples with a diameter &leq; 2.5 μm (PM2.5) were collected in January 2014 in three cities located in Northeast, East and Southeast China, i.e., Changchun, Shanghai and Guangzhou, respectively. Organic aerosol (OA) in the PM2.5 samples was analyzed by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry in both negative mode (ESI−) and positive mode electrospray ionization (ESI+). After a non-target screening including molecular formula assignments, compounds were classified into five groups based on their elemental composition, i.e., CHO, CHON, CHN, CHOS and CHONS. The CHO, CHON and CHN compounds present the dominant signal abundances of 81–99.7 % in the mass spectra and the majority of these compounds were assigned to mono- and polyaromatics, suggesting that anthropogenic emissions are a large source of urban OA in all three cities. However, the chemical characteristics of these compounds varied among different cities. The degree of aromaticity and the number of polyaromatic compounds were significantly higher in samples from Changchun, which could be attributed to the large emissions from residential heating (i.e., coal combustion) during winter time in Northeast China. Moreover, the ESI− analysis showed higher H / C and O / C ratios for organic compounds in Shanghai and Guangzhou compared to samples from Changchun, indicating that OA in lower latitude regions of China experiences more intense photochemical oxidation processes. The majority of sulfur-containing compounds (CHOS and CHONS) in all cities were assigned to aliphatic compounds with low degrees of unsaturation and aromaticity. Again, samples from Shanghai and Guangzhou exhibit a larger chemical similarity but largely differ from those from Changchun.

Sea spray aerosol (SSA) emission is a complex process affected by various controlling factors. This work seeks to deconvolute some of this complexity in a controlled laboratory setting using a plunging jet by varying three key parameters, one at a time: (1) air entrainment rate, (2) seawater temperature, and (3) biomass of phytoplankton. The production of SSA is found to vary linearly with air entrainment rate. By normalizing the production flux to air entrainment rate, we observe nonlinear variation of the production efficiency of SSA with seawater temperature with a minimum around 6-10 °C. For comparison, SSA was also generated by detraining air into artificial seawater using a diffuser demonstrating that the production efficiency of SSA generated using a diffuser decreases almost linearly with increasing seawater temperature, and the production efficiency is significantly higher than that for SSA generated using a plunging jet. Finally, by varying the amount of phytoplankton biomass we demonstrate that SSA particle production varies nonlinearly with the amount of biomass in seawater.

We reply to the comment by Dieter Britz on two recent papers in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. The comment presents a valuable, however, less flexible, alternative to the analysis performed in these papers and as such has no impact on any of the scientific results reported in the two publications.

Carboxylic acids and organosulfates comprise an important fraction of atmospheric secondary organic aerosols formed from both anthropogenic and biogenic precursors. The partitioning of these compounds between the gas and particle phase is still unclear and further research is warranted to better understand the abundance and effect of organic acids and organosulfates on the formation and properties of atmospheric aerosols. This work compares atmospheric aerosols collected at an urban and a boreal forest site using two side-by-side sampling systems; a high volume sampler (HVS) and a low volume (LVS) denuder/filter sampling system allowing for separate collection of gas- and particle-phase organics. All particle filters and denuder samples were collected at H.C. Andersen Boulevard (HCAB), Copenhagen, Denmark in the summer of 2010, and at the remote boreal forest site at Hyytiala forestry field station in Finland in the summer of 2012. The chemical composition of gas- and particle-phase secondary organic aerosol was investigated by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/ESI-Q-TOFMS), with a focus on carboxylic acids and organosulfates. Results show gas-phase concentrations higher than those observed in the particle phase by a factor of 5–6 in HCAB 2010 and 50–80 in Hyytiala 2012. Although abundant in the particle phase, no organosulfates were detected in the gas phase at either site. Through a comparison of samples collected by the HVS and the LVS denuder/filter sampling system we evaluate the potential artifacts associated with sampling of atmospheric aerosols. Such comparison shows that particle phase concentrations of semi-volatile organic acids obtained from the filters collected by HVS are more than two times higher than concentrations obtained from filters collected using LVS denuder/filter system. In most cases, higher concentrations of organosulfates are observed in particles collected by HVS compared to samples collected by LVS denuder/filter sampling system. The present study shows that volatile organics may absorb onto filter materials in the HVS (and similar sampling systems without denuder) and furthermore undergo subsequent on-filter oxidation and sulfation resulting in formation of both organic acids and organosulfates.

Highly-oxygenated Organic Molecules (HOM) are important contributors to Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) and New-Particle Formation (NPF) in the boreal atmosphere. This newly discovered class of molecules is efficiently formed from atmospheric oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOC), such as monoterpenes, through a process called autoxidation. This process, in which peroxy-radical intermediates isomerize to allow addition of molecular oxygen, is expected to be highly temperature-dependent. Here, we studied the dynamics of HOM formation during alpha-pinene ozonolysis experiments performed at three different temperatures, 20 °C, 0 °C and −15 °C, in the Aarhus University Research on Aerosol (AURA) chamber. We found that the HOM formation, under our experimental conditions (50 ppb alpha-pinene, 100 ppb ozone), decreased considerably as temperature decreased, with molar yields dropping by around a factor of 50 when experiments were performed at 0 °C, compared to 20 °C. At −15 °C, the HOM signals were already close to the detection limit of the nitrate-based Chemical Ionization Atmospheric Pressure interface Time Of Flight (CI-APi-TOF) mass spectrometer used for measuring gas-phase HOM. Surprisingly, very little difference was seen in the mass spectral distribution of the HOM molecules of interest at 0 °C and 20 °C, with e.g. the ratios between the typical HOM products C10H14O7, C10H14O9, and C10H14O11 remaining fairly constant. The more oxidized species have undergone more isomerization steps, yet, at lower temperature, they did not decrease more than the less oxidized species. One possible explanation is be that the rate-limiting step forming these HOM occurs before the products become oxygenated enough to be detected by our CI-APi-TOF (i.e. typically seven or more oxygen atoms). The strong temperature dependence of HOM formation was observed under temperatures highly relevant for the boreal forest, but the exact magnitude of this effect in the atmosphere will be much more complex: the fate of peroxy-radicals is a competition between autoxidation (influenced by temperature and VOC type) and bimolecular termination pathways (influenced mainly by concentration of reaction partners). While the temperature influence is likely smaller in the boreal atmosphere than in our chamber, the magnitude and complexity of this effect clearly deserves more consideration in future studies in order to estimate the ultimate role of HOM on SOA and NPF under different atmospheric conditions.

Using a radio-frequency ion trap to study ion-molecule reactions under isolated conditions, we report a direct experimental determination of reaction rate constants for the sequential oxidation of iodine anions by ozone at room temperature (300 K). The results are R1: I- + O3 → IO- + O2, k1 = (7 ± 2) × 10-12 cm3 s-1; R2: IO- + O3 → IO2- + O2, k2 = (10 ± 2) × 10-9 cm3 s-1; R3: IO2- + O3 → IO3- + O2, k3 = (16 ± 2) × 10-9 cm3 s-1. More oxidized forms such as IO4- and IO5- were not observed. Additionally, we performed quantum chemical calculations to elucidate the energetics of these oxidation reactions.
