Abstract

Copepods form the bulk of secondary production in marine ecosystems and are a major resource for higher trophic levels. Copepods are highly sensitive to environmental changes as they are ectotherms with a short life span whose metabolism and development depend on abiotic conditions. In turn, changes in their functional structure (i.e. functional trait composition) can have impacts on ecosystems. We examined changes in the copepod functional community in the North Sea over the past five decades, using a trait-based approach. We observed a shift around 1986–1988: the copepod community was initially dominated by larger herbivores, with a long development time, diapause ability, and highest abundances in summer. This community changed abruptly after 1986–1988, to a dominance of smaller carnivore taxa, with shorter development times, less ability to enter diapause, and that display higher abundances in autumn. This rapid reorganization could be driven by higher water temperatures, lower dinoflagellate abundances, and lower nutrient concentrations. These changes could impact adjacent trophic levels, such as phytoplankton on which several species graze or fish larvae, leading to a mismatch situation with consequences for fish recruitment. Abstract

The North Sea (NS) is changing rapidly. Temporal variations in fishing intensity and eutrophic conditions, along with the ongoing impact of climate change, act in synergy resulting in modifications in marine communities. Although zooplankton has been extensively investigated, studies often ignore the large-sized meso- and macro-zooplankton (>500 µm), including holoplankton and meroplankton taxa. Here, we examined changes in abundances and community structure of these organisms between 1975 and 2018, using univariate and multivariate analysis, at different taxonomic levels. Abrupt changes in the abundances of (sub)communities occurred during different time periods and resulted in a significant restructuration of the entire community in 2006. These changes were consistent with the regime shifts reported in the NS and were a consequence of the environmental pressures on the whole community or on specific subcommunities. In the long term, the community shifted from higher abundances of hydrozoans and holoplankton taxa to an increasing abundance of decapods. Furthermore, we reveal the environmental variables that most explain the variability in the community dynamics, highlighting the importance of temperature and top-down processes. Our study underlines the relevance of investigations at different taxonomic levels, which elucidates how distinct responses to environmental changes ultimately shape the entire community structure. 10. Identification of tipping years and shifts in mesozooplankton community structure using multivariate analyses: a long-term study in southern North Sea.

Abstract

Many previous studies on the changes in zooplankton communities considered only subsets of the total community. In this study, we investigated the temporal dynamics of the mesozooplankton community structure, considering all taxa (holo- and meroplankton) sampled over the last five decades at Helgoland Roads. We identified two tipping years. The first one occurred in 1983, which is consistent with previous studies conducted on copepods. The second shift, even more pronounced, took place in the mid-2000s. During the first shift, most taxa significantly increased in abundance and kept high densities until the end of the 1990s. Then, we observed in the mid-2000s a sharp decrease in community diversity and abundances of almost all taxa. One of the aims of the study was to test the robustness depending on the choice of taxa. To test this, we selected different subsets of the total zooplankton community, both randomly as well as based on functionality. We observed very similar trends over time for all groups, showing the complete community experienced the same changes. However, the timing of the tipping years depended on the organisms considered. Abstract

International audience; Current questions (robotics, forensic, etc.) require a better understanding of individual speech properties. Research in this field is regularly confronted to variability (intra- and inter-speakers) issues, especially in spontaneous speech. This study aims to document rate variations in a spontaneous speech corpus, by taking into account various factors that can influence their production like type of interaction. 16 speakers are analyzed in a corpus of conversational dialogues. Our results show that speakers have an average higher speech rate in conversational speech than in read speech with a fairly strong inter-speaker variation. Nevertheless, we observe a large overlap between speaker’s individual rates. A closer observation of a dialogues during the conversations doesn’t show variation according to interaction types but confirm an adaptation to the rate of the interlocutor.; RESUME Des questions actuelles (robotiques, judiciaires, etc.) recourent au besoin de mieux comprendre les caractéristiques de la parole des individus. Les recherches, dans ce domaine se heurtent régulièrement aux questions de variabilité (intra et inter-locuteurs), tout particulièrement en situation de parole spontanée. Cette étude vise à mieux cerner les variations de débit des locuteurs dans un corpus de parole spontanée en prenant en compte différents facteurs pouvant influencer leur production tel que le type d'interaction. 16 locuteurs sont analysés dans un corpus de dialogues conversationnels. Nos résultats montrent que les locuteurs ont en moyenne un débit plus élevé en parole conversationnelle qu'en parole lue avec une variation inter-locuteurs assez forte. On observe malgré tout un important chevauchement des valeurs pour l'ensemble des locuteurs. Une observation plus fine des dialogues ne montre pas d'influence du type d'interaction mais confirme une adaptation du débit à l'interlocuteur. Abstract

Le projet de technopole de Foum El Oued s’étend sur 126ha en bordure de l’océan Atlantique dans l’embouchure asséchée de l’oued Sakia El Hamra. Situé à 18km en aval de la ville de Laâyoune ce projet urbain vise à être un catalyseur du développement des régions du Sud du Maroc. Lors des études de projet, les débits de l’Oued ont été jugés négligeables, en raison: de l’obstruction de la basse vallée par les dunes de sable, de la présence du barrage Sakia El Hamra à Laâyoune et de l’absence de crues ayant atteint l’océan depuis plus de cinquante ans. La crue du 28 au 30 octobre 2016, qui a balayé l’ensemble des infrastructures de la basse vallée et les travaux sur le site, a éveillé brutalement la conscience du risque d’inondation à long terme pour le projet. Cette crue a entraîné la rupture du barrage par surverse, suivie par l’effacement des dunes dans la basse vallée et le delta. Un modèle hydraulique 2D a été construit pour comparer l’efficacité des actions envisageables. Mais la définition d’un scénario d’aménagement durable se heurte à l’évolution morphologique de l’oued commandée par le déplacement des dunes éoliennes et par les écoulements temporaires de l’oued. La solution technique retenue se résume alors à l’isolement du projet urbain par une digue et à la nécessaire préservation de l’espace d’expansion des crues du delta. Ce choix oblige à l’entretien permanent de la digue et au maintien des chenaux d’évacuation des eaux à l’océan. Aux prémices de la concrétisation de ce projet urbain d’envergure, face au défi de sa protection permanente et de la faible culture du risque, la recherche d’alternatives de relocalisation du projet demeure un choix raisonnable!

Abstract

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease in which an early and selective vulnerability of striatal Spiny Projection Neurons is observed. However, several studies have highlighted the implication of glial cells, and in particular astrocytes, in the pathophysiological mechanisms of this disease. A better understanding of the respective contributions of neurons and astrocytes in HD is needed and would be important for the development of new therapeutic approaches. Today, no comparable in vivo models expressing the mutant HTT selectively in astrocytes or in neurons are available. In this study, we developed comparable cell-type specific mouse models expressing a fragment of Huntingtin specifically in neurons, astrocytes, or in both cell populations of the adult mouse basal ganglia circuit. This approach allowed us to characterize behavioral alterations occurring as soon as 4 weeks postinjection. Interestingly, less severe but significant behavioral alterations were also observed in the two cell-type specific models. We further showed that astrocytes are less affected by mHTT compared to neurons, in particular concerning mHTT aggregation. Additionally, a more indirect contribution of astrocytes compared to neurons was observed in several pathophysiological mechanisms such as astrogliosis and neuronal dysfunction. Finally, we showed that direct and indirect transcriptional alterations within the glial glutamatergic clearing system are caused by astrocytic and neuronal expression of mHTT, respectively. We anticipate that our study will help to better understand the contributions of astrocytes to HD and guide future therapeutic efforts. GLIA 2016;64:1841-1856.
