Recent studies have revealed dysbiosis in patients with systemic sclerosis and have indicated the possible role of the microbiota and its metabolites in the pathogenesis of the disease. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a compound produced by dysbiotic microbiota observed at higher concentrations in several autoimmune diseases.Objective: To determine concentrations of the bacteria-derived metabolite TMAO in patients with systemic sclerosis and to assess possible correlation between TMAO and a specific manifestation of the disease.Patients and Methods: The study included 63 patients with SSc and 47 matched control subjects. The concentration of TMAO was measured with high-performance liquid chromatography.Results: Plasma TMAO level was significantly increased in patients with SSc (283.0 [188.5– 367.5] ng/mL versus 205.5 [101.0– 318.0] ng/mL; p < 0.01). An increased concentration of TMAO was observed in patients with concomitant interstitial lung disease (ILD) (302.0 ng/mL [212.0– 385.5] ng/mL versus 204.0 [135.5– 292.0] ng/mL; p < 0.01) and esophageal dysmotility (289.75 [213.75– 387.5] ng/mL versus 209.5 ng/mL [141.5– 315.0] ng/mL; p < 0.05) compared to patients without these complications. Furthermore, TMAO concentration exhibited significant correlation with markers of heart involvement (left ventricle ejection fraction, NT-proBNP), marker of ILD severity and Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium Damage Index.Conclusion: The concentration of TMAO, gut microbiota-associated metabolite, is increased in systemic sclerosis, particularly in patients with advanced organ involvement. This is the first study evaluating plasma TMAO in systemic sclerosis. Bacterial metabolites may be a link between dysbiosis and organ involvement in the course of the disease. 6. Orthorhombic phase of La$_{0.5}$Bi$_{0.5}$NiO$_{3}$ studied by first principles

Abstract

The aim of presented first principles study of La$_{0.5}$Bi$_{0.5}$NiO$_{3}$ is to investigate electronic structure of orthorhombic phase Pbnm. The calculations show that metallicity and magnetism of the system are strongly related with hybridization between Ni 3d and O 2p. To improve the quality of the electronic structure description of the system, especially the treatment of correlation for the Ni 3d, we employ GGA, LDA, and GGA+U, LDA+U. The LSDA results give good agreement with experiment. Thus, the screening effects originating from the hybridized 3d and O 2p electrons are sufficiently strong that they reduce the electronic correlations in the La$_{0.5}$Bi$_{0.5}$NiO$_{3}$, making it a weakly correlated metal., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; The European Conference Physics of Magnetism 2017, submitted to Acta Physica Polonica A

7. Effect of Co substitution on Ni$_{2}$MnGe Heusler alloy: ab initio study

Abstract

Ab initio calculations shown that the Co substitution instead of Ni in Ni$_{2}$MnGe with the L2$_{1}$ crystallographic structure leads to a decrease of the lattice constant and an increase of the total magnetic moment of the Ni$_{2-x}$Co$_{x}$MnGe compounds. The Mn(B) has the largest local moment above $3~\mu_{B}$ coupled parallel to moments on the Ni(A,C) and Co(A,C), which are found in the ranges of $0.19\div0.26~\mu_{B}$ for Ni(A,C) and $1.03\div0.97~\mu_{B}$ for Co(A,C) for studied range of $x$. Abstract

eXTP is a science mission designed to study the state of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of about 0.9 m^2 and 0.6 m^2 at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering <180 eV spectral resolution; the Large Area Detector (LAD) - a deployable set of 640 Silicon Drift Detectors, for a total effective area of about 3.4 m^2, between 6 and 10 keV, and spectral resolution <250 eV; the Polarimetry Focusing Array (PFA) - a set of 2 X-ray telescope, for a total effective area of 250 cm^2 at 2 keV, equipped with imaging gas pixel photoelectric polarimeters; the Wide Field Monitor (WFM) - a set of 3 coded mask wide field units, equipped with position-sensitive Silicon Drift Detectors, each covering a 90 degrees x 90 degrees FoV. The eXTP international consortium includes mostly major institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities in China, as well as major institutions in several European countries and the United States. The predecessor of eXTP, the XTP mission concept, has been selected and funded as one of the so-called background missions in the Strategic Priority Space Science Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2011. Patients were stratified into four groups based on cumulative OGC dose (> 0 to ≤ 2607 mg, > 2607 to ≤ 4800 mg, > 4800 to ≤ 7200 mg, and > 7200 mg) during the 1-year follow-up period; incidence of potential AEs and AE-related direct healthcare costs in USD were assessed. Association between the log of cumulative OGC dose and AE-related direct healthcare costs was evaluated, adjusting for baseline characteristics.Results: Of 1602 patients with GCA included, 69% were women; the mean age was 73 years. The mean cumulative OGC dose was 5806 mg during the 1-year follow-up; most exposure occurred in the first 6 months. The proportion of patients with potential OGC-related AEs was 36.5% overall and increased as cumulative dose increased (30.7%–45.3% across dose groups). Unadjusted mean AE-related costs for patients with an AE was USD $12,818. In the multivariable model including all patients, increasing OGC dose was associated with increasing AE-related healthcare costs (cost ratio, 1.38 [95% CI, 1.16–1.64] per 1-unit increase in log of cumulative OGC dose [P < 0.001]). Mean (median)-predicted AE costs for the dose groups were USD $4389 ($2749) for > 0 to ≤ 2607 mg, USD $5176 ($3009) for > 2607 to ≤ 4800 mg, USD $5576 ($3633) for > 4800 to ≤ 7200 mg, and USD $6609 ($4447) for > 7200 mg.Conclusion: In patients with GCA, OGC-related AEs increased with increasing cumulative OGC dose, resulting in increased healthcare costs. Thirty-three samples were collected in the Pomeranian and 27 in the Lubelskie voivodeship. The air samples were collected on the first day of each month at 1:00 pm for 10 mins at a height of 1.5 m above the ground. The number of mesophilic bacteria was detected after 24–48 hrs incubation at 37°C on tryptone soya agar (TSA; Merck, Darmstadt, Germany). The number of psychrophilic bacteria was detected after 72 hrs incubation at 22°C on TSA. The number of fungi was detected by a 5-day long incubation at 28°C on chloramphenicol yeast glucose agar.Results: In the Lubelskie voivodeship, the mean concentration of psychrophilic bacteria was significantly higher than in the Pomeranian voivodeship (2739 vs 608 CFU/m3, respectively), the mean concentration of mesophilic bacteria was significantly higher (2493 vs 778/m3, respectively) and the concentration of fungi was significantly higher (3840 vs 688 CFU/m3, respectively). Abstract

The paper presents the study of drawability of thin sheet metals made of a nickel superalloy Inconel type. The manufacturing process of axisymmetric cup – cone and a closed section profile in the form of a circular tube were designed and analyzed. In both cases, working fluid-oil was used in place of the rigid tools. The process of forming liquid is currently the only alternative method for obtaining complex shapes, coatings, and especially if we do it with high-strength materials. In the case of nickel superalloys the search for efficient methods to manufacture of the shaped shell is one of the most considerable problems in aircraft industry [1-5]. However, the automotive industries have the same problem with so-called advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). Due to this, both industrial problems have been examined and the emphasis have been put on the process of liquid forming (hydroforming). The study includes physical tests and the corresponding numerical simulations performed, using the software Eta/Dynaform 5.9. Numerical analysis of the qualitative and quantitative forecasting enables the formability of materials with complex and unusual characteristics of the mechanical properties and forming technology. It has been found that only the computer aided design based on physical and numerical modeling, makes efficient plastic processing possible using a method of hydroforming. Drawability evaluation based on the determination of the mechanical properties of complex characteristics is an indispensable element of this design in the best practice of industrial manufacturing products made of thin sheet metals.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of a study of drawability of thin AZ31 magnesium alloy metal sheets. These studies are a continuation of experiences in presenting the characteristics of technological plasticity of strips made of magnesium alloy which have been cast between rolls in vertical and horizontal systems called ‘twin-roll casting’. In the context of previous experiments conducted at the Institute of Material Technology of the Silesian University of Technology in cooperation with the Technical University - Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany), drawability of these strips at elevated temperatures has been comprehensively defined while using forming limit curves. Due to low formability of magnesium alloys at ambient temperature, formability tests - including cup forming tests presented in this paper - have been carried out in heated dies at temperature range of 200°C to 350°C. A modern AutoGrid digital local strain analyzer has been used in the examinations and the method of image analysis of deformed coordination nets has been applied. Quantitative and qualitative impact of deformation temperature upon the drawability effects of AZ31 magnesium alloys products have been evaluated.

Abstract

Here, the comparison of two different semiconductor materials is demonstrated, TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4 composites—modified with balls of approximately 5 nm Ag nanoparticles (NPs) as photocatalysts for the degradation of the model dye acid orange 7 (AO7). The melem molecule synthesized here is one of a series of organic compounds consisting of triazine ring compounds with a structure similar to that of melam and melamine. The photodegradation process of AO7 was carried out to examine all powder materials as a potential photocatalyst. Additionally, two different lamps of wavelengths 368 nm (UV light) and 420 nm (VIS light) were applied to compare the photodegradation tests. A new synthesis route for the acquisition of Ag NPs (Ag content 0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 wt%), based on a wet and low temperature method without the use of reducing reagents was proposed. The best photocatalytic performances under UV and VIS light were obtained for both, TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4 materials (new synthesis route) modified with a very low Ag content—0.5 wt%. The photodegradation activities using UV lamp (3 h, 368 nm irradiation) for samples with 0.5 wt% of Ag: TiO2 and melem/g-C3N4, in excess of 95 and 94%, respectively, were achieved. The highest photoactive materials melem/g-C3N4 with 0.5 and 1 wt% Ag revealed 98% of activity under the VIS lamp after 3 h long irradiation. Our work demonstrates a novel, environmentally acceptable, and cost-effective chemical strategy for preparation of photocatalysts suitable for degradation of organic contaminants in wastewater treatment. Abstract

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.
