Background This study aimed to examine the association of race and ethnicity with 30-day unplanned reintubation following head and neck surgery. Methodology A retrospective analysis of head and neck surgery patients aged greater than or equal to 18 years was extracted from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2015 to 2020. Patient demographics, comorbidities, and 30-day reintubation were included in the analysis. Pearson's chi-square and independent samples t-test were used to compare reintubation cohorts. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the association of race and ethnicity with 30-day reintubation. Results Of the total 108,442 head and neck surgery cases included, 74.9% of patients were non-Hispanic White, 17.3% were non-Hispanic Black, and 7.7% were Hispanic. The overall 30-day reintubation rate was 0.33%. After adjusting for age, body mass index, sex, and comorbidities, non-Hispanic Black patients had increased 30-day reintubation compared to non-Hispanic White patients (odds ratio [OR] = 2.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.70-2.69, and P < 0.0001). There was no difference in 30-day reintubation for Hispanic patients compared to non-Hispanic White patients (OR = 1.08, 95% CI 0.67-1.65, and P = 0.747). Conclusions This analysis showed that non-Hispanic Black patients disproportionately had higher odds of 30-day reintubation following head and neck surgery. Hispanic ethnicity was not associated with increased odds of 30-day reintubation. More studies are needed to investigate the reasons for these racial differences.

Young Black women experience higher rates of dating violence victimization compared to their White peers. Religion is a cornerstone of African American culture, suggesting that Black women may use religious coping after experiencing trauma like dating violence. However, research has not explored the patterns of religious coping following dating violence experiences. The current study analyzed survey data from 481 young Black women aged 18–19 years on their religious coping behaviors, acceptance of violence beliefs, and dating violence victimization experiences. Results showed that victimization was positively associated with negative religious coping. Findings indicate that one way young Black women cope with dating violence victimization is through feelings of spiritual discontent, and they may see their victimization as a punishment from God. Among youth 15 to 24 years of age, homicide and nonfatal shootings are the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. Urban youth's attitudes and perceptions about the use of gun violence to resolve conflict present a major barrier to efforts to reduce gun homicides and nonfatal shootings. The current investigation extends the existing literature on attitudes toward guns and shootings among high-risk youth ages 18 to 24 by measuring perceived norms and viewpoints regarding gun violence in two analogous Baltimore City neighborhoods pre-implementation and 1-year post-implementation of the Safe Streets intervention (adapted from the CeaseFire/Cure Violence intervention). The Safe Streets intervention is designed for communities with high rates of gun violence and utilizes outreach workers to identify and build trusting relationships with youth ages 15 to 24 who are at greatest risk of being involved in gun violence. The outreach workers also position themselves in the community so that they can rapidly intervene in disputes that have the potential to lead to gun violence. Chi-squared tests and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) were used to examine changes in attitudes toward gun violence 1 year after the implementation of the Safe Streets intervention. There was a statistically significantly improvement in 43 % of the attitudes assessed in the intervention community post-intervention compared to 13 % of the attitudes in the control community. Background: Much etiologic research has focused on individual-level risk factors for teen dating violence (TDV); therefore, less is known about school-level and neighborhood-level risk factors. We examined the association between alcohol outlet density around high schools and TDV victimization and the association between markers of physical disorder around schools and TDV victimization among adolescents. Methods: Data come from high school students participating in the Maryland Safe and Supportive Schools Initiative. Alcohol outlet density was calculated using walking distance buffers around schools. An observational tool was used to assess indicators of physical disorder on school property (e.g., alcohol and drug paraphernalia). Hierarchical linear modeling was used to identify student- and school-level predictors associated with TDV victimization. Results: Overall, 11% of students reported experiencing physical TDV and 11% reported experiencing psychological TDV over the past year. Recent alcohol use was a risk factor for TDV victimization for both sexes, whereas feeling safe at school was protective against TDV victimization for both sexes. Greater alcohol outlet density was associated with decreased TDV victimization for males, however, it was nonsignificant for females. Physical disorder around schools was not associated with TDV victimization for either sex. Conclusion: Although the school-level predictors were not associated with TDV victimization, alcohol use and perceptions of safety at school were significantly associated with TDV victimization. Prevention efforts to address alcohol use may affect TDV victimization.
