1. Topological changes and deformation mechanisms of nanoporous Ta under compression

Abstract

While the mechanical behavior of noble nanoporous metals has been the subject of numerous studies, less is known about their recently developed refractory-based counterparts. Here we report on the mechanical properties, deformation mechanisms and topological changes of nanoporous tantalum, a prototypical refractory metal, by means of atomistic simulations of compression tests. An open-source multi-cpu and gpu-capable software is presented and used for the generation of computational samples. The stress strain curves show a non-linear elastic response, with early yielding. The plastic regime is first characterized by a linear hardening followed by an exponential hardening at large strains, associated with a high degree of densification. Plasticity is dominated by dislocation activity, with twinning and vacancy formation appearing as complementary deformation mechanisms. In order to study the mechanical response from a topological perspective, we track the evolution of the genus throughout the tests, finding direct correlations with each regime of the stress strain curves. The results are in agreement with previous studies of plasticity in nanoporous metals and highlight the importance of using topological metrics, for gaining insights into complex aspects of the deformation of nanoporous metals.

Abstract

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma contributes significantly to global cancer-related deaths, featuring only a 10% survival rate over five years. The quest for novel tumor markers is critical to facilitate early diagnosis and tailor treatment strategies for this disease, which is key to improving patient outcomes. In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, these markers have been demonstrated to play a crucial role in early identification, continuous monitoring, and prediction of its prognosis and have led to better patient outcomes. Nowadays, biopsy specimens serve to ascertain diagnosis and determine tumor type. However, liquid biopsies present distinct advantages over conventional biopsy techniques. They offer a noninvasive, easily administered procedure, delivering insights into the tumor's status and facilitating real-time monitoring. Liquid biopsies encompass a variety of elements, such as circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, extracellular vesicles, microRNAs, circulating RNA, tumor platelets, and tumor endothelial cells. This review aims to provide an overview of the clinical applications of liquid biopsy as a technique in the management of pancreatic cancer.

36. Prevention of Incisional Hernia after Open Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Introduction: Most hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) procedures are still performed through open approach. Incisional hernia (IH) is one of the most common complications after open surgery. To date, published data on IH after HPB surgery are scarce; therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the current evidence regarding incidence, risk factors, and prevention. Methods: Medline/PubMed (1946-2020), EMBASE (1947-2020), and the Cochrane library (1995-2020) were searched for studies on IH in open HPB surgery. Animal studies, editorials, letters, reviews, comments, short case series and liver transplant, laparoscopic, or robotic procedures were excluded. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020163296). Results: A total of 5,079 articles were retrieved. Eight studies were finally included for the analysis. The incidence of IH after HPB surgery ranges from 7.7% to 38.8%. The identified risk factors were body mass index, surgical site infection, ascites, Mercedes or reversed T incisions, and previous IH. Prophylactic mesh might be safe and effective. Conclusions: IH after open HPB surgery is still an important matter. Some of the risk factors are specific for the HPB operations and the incision type should be carefully considered. Randomized controlled trials are required to confirm the role of prophylactic mesh after HPB operations.

Abstract

Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations on grain collisions allow to incorporate complex properties of dust interactions. We performed simulations of collisions of porous grains, each with many particles, using the MD software LAMMPS. The simulations consisted of a projectile grain striking a larger immobile target grain, with different impact velocities. The disadvantage of this method is the large computational cost due to a large number of particles being modeled. Machine Learning (ML) has the power to manipulate large data and build predictive models that could reduce MD simulation times. Using ML algorithms (Support Vector Machine and Random Forest), we are able to predict the outcome of MD simulations regarding fragment formation after a number of steps smaller than in usual MD simulations. We achieved a time reduction of at least 46%, for 90% accuracy. These results show that SVM and RF can be powerful yet simple tools to reduce computational cost in collision fragmentation simulations. Resumen Las simulaciones de dinámica molecular (MD) en colisiones de granos permiten incorporar propiedades complejas de interacciones de polvo. Realizamos simulaciones de colisiones de granos porosos, cada uno con muchas partículas, utilizando el software LAMMPS de MD. Las simulaciones consistieron en un grano de proyectil que golpeó un grano objetivo inmóvil más grande, con diferentes velocidades de impacto. La desventaja de este método es el gran costo computacional debido a que se modela una gran cantidad de partículas. Machine Learning (ML) tiene el poder de manipular grandes datos y construir modelos predictivos que podrían reducir los tiempos de simulación MD. Usando algoritmos ML (Support Vector Machine y Random Forest) podemos predecir el resultado de las simulaciones MD con respecto a la formación de fragmentos, después de varios pasos más pequeños que en las simulaciones MD habituales. Logramos una reducción de tiempo de al menos un 46%, para una precisión del 90%. Estos resultados muestran que SVM y RF pueden ser herramientas poderosas pero simples para reducir el costo computacional en simulaciones de fragmentación de colisiones.

Abstract

El objetivo de PIRAMIDE ha sido potenciar los resultados académicos de los estudiantes de grado y máster mediante la investigación en ingeniería espacial. Este proyecto ha sido llevado a cabo por profesores del Instituto IDR/UPM y del grupo STRAST. El programa se estructuró en cinco estudios diferentes: 1) Diseño de una misión espacial (fase 0/A) en una Instalación de Diseño Concurrente (CDF); 2) Selección y estudio de un ordenador de a bordo para una misión CubeSat; 3) Metodologías de diseño inteligente aplicadas a la ingeniería gráfica; 4) Análisis de sistemas de potencia para aplicaciones espaciales; y 5) Diseño de un Subsistema de Control y Determinación de Actitud (ADCS) de una nave espacial. En el presente trabajo se analizan los resultados de realizar 5 encuestas a los alumnos para cada uno de los casos de estudio que componen PIRAMIDE y una encuesta al profesorado. Además, se incluye un análisis crítico con las lecciones aprendidas que podrían ayudar a diseñar mejores proyectos de innovación educativa en el futuro.

47. Bioefficacy of fungal chitin oligomers in the control of postharvest decay in tomato fruit.

Abstract

Tomato is one of the most commercialised and consumed fruits worldwide. However, tomatoes are highly susceptible to Alternaria rot. Among the safe strategies proposed to control Alternaria rot is the induction of defence mechanisms through biological elicitors, such as chitin. Chitin and its oligosaccharides are an activate plant defence mechanisms, but studies of fruits exposed to fungal chitin fragments are scarce. Therefore, the present work aimed to obtain and partially characterise chitin oligomers of Alternaria alternata, and evaluate their effect on the defence mechanism of tomato fruits and their tolerance to Alternaria rot. The chitin oligomers obtained had a molecular weight of ≤ 1 kDa, 12% N-acetyl-glucosamine, 0.2% residual protein, and were 94% acetylated. These oligomers markedly increased the enzymatic activity of chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase in tomato fruits, and the development of Alternaria rot was inhibited by 78%. Chitin oligomers of A. alternata represent a promising alternative to attenuate Alternaria rot in tomato fruits through an enzymatic defence mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
