The geochemical behavior of metals in water and sediment was investigated in the tidal section of the Zenne River in Belgium. Twelve-hour sampling campaigns were performed in October 2013 and March 2021 at the mouth of the Zenne River, under dry and rainy weather conditions respectively. Water samples were collected every hour while the passive samplers of Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) were deployed continuously during a tidal cycle. In addition, bottom sediments were sampled at the tidal station and water samples were taken upstream and downstream of that station to identify the metal sources. The highest concentrations of Fe, Mn, Pb, Cr, Ni and Zn appear at low tide, indicating the Zenner River as a main source. Ratiometric electrochemical assays have been demonstrated to be more sensitive and selective in various sensing events, mainly due to their affordable built-in correction and good self-reference capability. But it is known that complicated modification and labeling operations usually are necessary for the construction of ratiometric electrochemical assays, therefore is a hot and important issue needing consideration carefully. As a kind of convenient, fast, and online analysis technology, point-of-care testing (POCT) technology has been widely used in disease diagnosis, health management, environmental monitoring and emergency response analysis. To date, it is a hot spot to develop novel strategy for the detection of various targets based on the simple, rapid and sensitive signal readout and different signal production, transfer and amplification strategies in the field of POCT. The introduction of some nanozymes and functionalized nanomaterials with special catalytic properties further accelerate the application of simple signal readout such as color, temperature, pressure, weight and distance, which greatly promotes the development of simple readout-based POCT methods, and expands the analytical applications of such methods. In this paper, we summarized the principles, classifications, and the applications of these emerging POCT methods for the analysis of life-related targets and reviewed their current challenges and future application prospects.

Colorimetric sensing strategies as a powerful point-of-care testing (POCT) tool have attracted significant interest in various chem/biosensing applications. Taking the excellent bare-eye-detectable signaling feature, nanozymes-based colorimetric sensors enable more potential applications and have been a new forefront in the colorimetric POCT analysis toward different target analytes. However, the low catalytic activity of nanozymes in most cases limits their practical application. Recent efforts demonstrate that the aggregation-induced nanozymes provide a general means to modulate nanozymes activity and enhance colorimetric sensing performances of some nanozymes-based colorimetric sensors. But there are few reports are explored to discuss and review such aggregation-induced nanozymes and their colorimetric sensing applications. To highlight the advances and progress in aggregation-induced nanozymes based colorimetric assays, we herein summary the fundamentals, classify and applications of this newly-developing field, focusing on the aggregation-induced activity enhancement of nanozymes (AIAE-nanozymes) with a significant “signal-on” feature and aggregation-induced activity inhibition of nanozymes (AIAI-nanozymes) with a dramatical “signal-off” characteristics. Finally, we also propose the current challenges and the future prospects on both AIAE-nanozymes and AIAI-nanozymes.

It took several consecutive years of devastating droughts sweeping through Europe, causing substantial economic losses, for many to realise how urging it is to improve the water directives, making critical sectors like agriculture more resilient to a changing climate. Shrinking water supplies and growing demand further forced stakeholders to seek alternative sources, drawing their attention to projects previously considered economically unjustified. Therefore, water re-use and reclamation became one of the EU’s priorities fulfilling the ambitions of the European Green Deal to implement circular water management strategies. To facilitate the transition and support new legislation, in-depth research in the feasibility and environmental impacts of aquifer recharge with reclaimed wastewater is essential. The GROW project investigates this issue on multiple levels, among which the effect of reclamation of wastewater through aquifer recharge on local and regional scale groundwater levels.At the experimental site in Kinrooi, Belgium, the groundwater levels are closely monitored with automatic submersible data loggers installed in 21 monitoring wells distributed on the investigated agricultural field and its vicinity. Data on water levels in the underlying Quaternary, porous aquifer are collected hourly and are verified through monthly manual measurements taken to ensure an unhindered operation of the infrastructure.A distributed, transient-state flow model is used to simulate the groundwater table’s response to the effluent sub-irrigation at the desired rate. The model’s flexibility also allows making predictions of the aquifer behaviour under changing climatic conditions by augmenting the soil-water balance model with revised weather data. The model’s performance is tested against the high temporal resolution dataset obtained from the monitoring network. Attention is also paid to the experiment’s effect on the water levels in the adjacent hydrological network, while the effluent is partly rerouted from the hitherto used surface water discharge to the sub-irrigation system.The data collected in our experiment is used to determine the capability of the aquifer to store and recover the reclaimed wastewater during drought periods. That would reduce the demand for traditional, inefficient surface irrigation and increase the climate resilience of the agricultural sector in Flanders. Together with data from similar projects carried out throughout Europe, our results can be used to facilitate long-expected EU legislation enabling circular water use. To support this process, we also investigate the impact of the re-use of treated wastewater for agriculture on groundwater quality and the public perception of this sensitive issue.

Re-use of treated wastewater is receiving increasing attention as method to reduce water stress resulting from population growth, socio-economic development and climate change. In 2018, the European Commission issued a policy strategy entailing minimum water quality requirements for water re-use for agriculture and aquifer recharge. However, the environmental impact of such solution is yet to be determined.The VUB in collaboration with private and public sector partners set up a field experiment in Kinrooi (Belgium) in which the effects of re-using treated domestic wastewater for sub-irrigation of an agricultural field are monitored. This is an interdisciplinary project which includes analyses of the effects on water quality and quantity in the subsurface saturated and unsaturated zone and nearby surface water, the effects on crops as well as research on the public perception.Within this project, one of the aims is to create an advection-dispersion groundwater transport model to investigate how the chemical composition of the shallow groundwater would change after the treated domestic wastewater is applied through sub-irrigation. Observation data of tracers of the re-used water in the groundwater are needed to calibrate the transport model. Therefore, it is critical to choose a suitable tracer, allowing to unambiguously tell apart the effluent and groundwater end members. Literature suggests the use of chemical properties such as stable isotopes and Cl/Br ratios to use as wastewater tracers. Stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen are investigated, but the focus is currently on the use of Cl/Br ratios, which shows promising results. The use of this ratio as tracer is based on the close to ideal conservative behaviour of bromide and chloride ions in water caused by their small size and hydrophilic characteristics. This implies that physical processes such as dilution and evaporation happening in the environment influence the absolute concentrations of the ions but leaves their ratio constant. At the moment, 21 monitoring wells are installed on the field of which 9 monitoring wells have been sampled for data on Cl/Br tracers.In general, the results indicate that finding a suitable tracer is not straightforward because chemical and isotopic compositions of the groundwater and treated wastewater are often similar. Therefore, the research continues to focus on improving the analytical methods used to analyse the currently used tracers (e.g. Cl/Br ratio and stable isotopes) and on the selection of other tracers such as anthropogenic organic compounds (e.g. pharmaceuticals and artificial sweeteners) to quantify the influence of the effluent end member and to enhance modelling performance.

Although semantic system is composed of two distinctive processes (i.e., semantic knowledge and semantic control), it remains unknown in which way these two processes dissociate from each other. Investigating the white matter neuroanatomy underlying these processes helps improve understanding of this question. To address this issue, we recruited brain-damaged patients with semantic dementia (SD) and semantic aphasia (SA), who had selective predominant deficits in semantic knowledge and semantic control, respectively. We built regression models to identify the white matter network associated with the semantic performance of each patient group. Semantic knowledge deficits in the SD patients were associated with damage to the left medial temporal network, while semantic control deficits in the SA patients were associated with damage to the other two networks (left frontal-temporal/occipital and frontal-subcortical networks). The further voxel-based analysis revealed additional semantic-relevant white matter tracts. These findings specify different processing principles of the components in semantic system.

Purpose Genetic studies have identified the association of some single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), but little is known about whether these SNPs are related to PCV clinical features as well. We performed this study to examine the association of 12 SNPs with PCV clinical phenotypes. Methods Sixty-nine PCV eyes of 69 patients were included. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood. Agilent SureSelect Human ALL Exon V6 was used to sequence the 12 SNPs previously reported to associate with PCV. Baseline best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), sub-foveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), choroid maximum vascular diameter (MVD), choroidal vascular hyperpermeability (CVH), and greatest linear dimension (GLD) of entire lesion were measured and compared between patients of different genotypes. Fisher’s exact test and Mann-Whitney U test were mainly used to compare categorical variables and continuous variables respectively. Results HTRA1 rs2293870 was a protective factor of PCV or AMD in the fellow eye (P = 0.040) and was related with greater SFCT in PCV eye after multiple linear regression (P = 0.043). C3 rs17030 was associated with smaller GLD (P = 0.033). CFH rs2274700 was related to lower MVD (P = 0.043) and was a protective factor for CVH (P = 0.034). Conclusion Multiple PCV-associated SNPs are associated with PCV clinical phenotypes. The involvement of several synonymous SNPs calls for further research on the role of transcriptional alterations and trans-regulation of distant signaling pathways in PCV pathogenesis.

Background To compare the choriocapillary flow density (CFD) among the fellow eyes of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), and healthy controls using spectral-domain optical coherence angiography tomography (SD-OCTA). Methods This is a cross-sectional study that includes the fellow eyes of 38 patients with unilateral PCV, 36 patients with unilateral nAMD, and 36 eyes from 36 healthy volunteers. The PCV group was further classified into polypoidal CNV (P-CNV) and typical PCV (T-PCV) for subgroup analysis. The age, subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) classification, and fellow eye diagnosis were acquired. All subjects underwent SD-OCTA with a 6.0-mm scan pattern. Circles with radius of 1.00, 1.50, and 3.00 mm were manually selected in the choriocapillaris (CC) slab, and the CFD was calculated as the percentage of the flow area to the whole selected area as CFD-1.00, 1.50, and 3.00, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to study the correlation between the aforementioned factors with CFD. Results The mean CFD-1.00, 1.50, and 3.00 of the nAMD group were 61.51, 63.18, and 66.20, respectively; these were significantly lower than those of the PCV group (65.90, 66.89, and 67.94; P P P = 0.010; respectively) and control group (66.28, 66.96, and 68.42; P P P = 0.001, respectively), and no difference was detected between the PCV and control group or between PCV subtypes. The AREDS classification and fellow eye diagnosis were correlated with CFD in univariate analysis; however, only the fellow eye diagnosis showed a significant correlation after multiple linear regression. Conclusions The CFD of nAMD fellow eyes was significantly lower than that of PCV and control eyes, and no difference was detected between PCV and control group, indicating that CC loss plays a different role in the early pathogenesis of nAMD and PCV.

Iron ions play a key role in many physiological processes, which can provide feedback for the evaluation of biological systems and environmental processes. New strategies for portable determination of Fe3+ therefore are still in urgent need. Here, through an in situ generation of prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs) in aqueous solution, we developed a bimodal method for photothermal and colorimetric detection of Fe3+. The sensing mechanism is based on the effective oxidation etching of Au–Cu core-shell nanocubes induced by Fe3+, accompanied by the in situ generation of PB NPs. It can be attributed to the specific reaction between ferrous ions (Fe2+) from the reduction of Fe3+ and potassium ferricyanide (K3[Fe(CN)6]) in the reaction solution. The in situ produced PB NPs show distinct bare-eye-detectable readouts with highly sensitive colorimetric and photothermal responses and thus can be used for Fe3+ determination. Such colorimetric change signals of characteristic absorbance at 740 nm in the UV–vis spectra showed a sensitive response to Fe3+ with a LOD of 210 nM. Moreover, as a sensitive photothermal probe, PB NPs generated in our Fe3+-enabled reaction system also exhibited a sensitive response to Fe3+ with a LOD of 70 nM. In addition, the standard addition experiments demonstrate our photothermal and colorimetric probe has good applicability for Fe3+ detection in the river water sample. What’s more, the proposed strategy opens a new horizon for affordable detection of metal ions using a common thermometer, and therefore has a great potential for analytical chemistry and some important applications such as environmental monitoring, disease diagnostics and food analysis.

Developing more portable point-of-care testing tools has attracted great attention in clinical diagnostics. Though great advances have been made in the color readout-based colorimetric field, there are some limitations, due to the lower color resolution of the most naked-eye-detectable color signal. We herein propose a useful strategy for simply achieving a visually detectable temperature readout-based photothermometric assay for sensing the target analyte of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which is based on the analyte-induced in situ generation of Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs) as both colorimetric and photothermometric nanoprobe. In our design, ascorbic acid 2-phosphate is enzymatically hydrolyzed by target ALP to produce ascorbic acid in the solution reaction system, which then reduces Fe3+ to Fe2+ and further leads to the in situ formation of PB NPs via a specific reaction between potassium ferricyanide and the in situ generated Fe2+. As both colorimetric and photothermometric nanoprobe, such in situ generated PB NPs not only exhibit sensitive color change but also demonstrate a distinct temperature response that is closely dependent on the ALP content. More significantly, the limitation of low color resolution in the colorimetric system for ALP detection was successfully overcome by the proposed photothermometric method with a simple temperature readout and higher sensitivity. This approach provides a general concept with good universality, considerable simplicity and flexibility for realizing a simple thermometer-based photothermometric assay.

Background. Liver metastasis (LM) is an independent risk factor that affects the prognosis of patients with ovarian cancer; however, there is still a lack of prediction. This study developed a limit gradient enhancement (XGBoost) to predict the risk of lung metastasis in newly diagnosed patients with ovarian cancer, thereby improving prediction efficiency. Patients and Methods. Data of patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Final Results (SEER) database from 2010 to 2015 were retrospectively collected. The XGBoost algorithm was used to establish a lung metastasis model for patients with ovarian cancer. The performance of the predictive model was tested by the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Results. The results of the XGBoost algorithm showed that the top five important factors were age, laterality, histological type, grade, and marital status. XGBoost showed good discriminative ability, with an AUC of 0.843. Accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.982, 1.000, and 0.686, respectively. Conclusion. This study is the first to develop a machine-learning-based prediction model for lung metastasis in patients with ovarian cancer. The prediction model based on the XGBoost algorithm has a higher accuracy rate than traditional logistic regression and can be used to predict the risk of lung metastasis in newly diagnosed patients with ovarian cancer.

Effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs) are an important source of estrogenic substances to the receiving water bodies affecting their ecological safety. In this study, steroids, bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates were assessed in the secondary (SE) and tertiary effluent (TE) of three typical urban STPs in Beijing (China). In addition, the overall estrogenic activity in these effluents was assessed by an in-vitro bioassay (ERE-CALUX). Results showed that the concentrations and activities of estrogenic compounds in TE were lower than those in SE. The residual concentration of 17β-estradiol (E2) was the highest among the detected steroids, accounting for 51.6 ± 5.1% in SE and 57.5 ± 24.8% in TE. The residual level (25.2-41.6 ng/L) of BPA in effluents was significantly higher than that of steroids (0.2-28.8 ng/L). The residual concentration of diethyl phthalate was the highest among the detected phthalates accounting for 47.1 ± 5.1% in SE and 37.6 ± 11.5% in TE. Steroids and BPA had a higher removal rate (83.5% and 96.7%) in secondary and tertiary treatment than phthalates (68.8% and 83.1%). A new signal-amplified photothermometric sensor of Ag+ was explored based on a simple yet effective integration of inorganic and organic photothermal probes, mainly depending on the successful exploitation of a dual-signal transduction channel originating from the inherent photothermal property and the peroxidase-like activity of Prussian blue nanocubes (PB NCs).

The biogeochemical cycle of trace metals and oxyanions in marine sediments is mainly controlled by early diagenesis of organic material, but anthropogenic activities such as dumping of dredged sludge or shipyard activities can strongly perturb these natural processes. Therefore, the impact of dumping of dredged sludge, shipyard activities such as blasting of boat hulls and the mixing of polluted Scheldt estuary water with less polluted coastal water on the mobilization of trace metals and oxyanions in the sediments was studied in the pre- and post-bloom period (March and October) in Belgian Coastal Zone (BCZ). Vertical profiles of total and labile dissolved trace element concentrations, dissolved sulfide, pH and redox potential were assessed in sediment porewaters. Generally, total and labile dissolved element profiles in the porewaters are well correlated, showing higher concentrations in March when the redox potential is lower and sulfide concentrations higher. Low pH levels were documented together with high amounts of Fe and associated elements in March at the dumping station. At the coastal station in the vicinity of the shipyards, sediment porewaters are enriched in dissolved Zn while at the mouth of the Scheldt estuary the highest dissolved Cu levels were found. Theoretical calculations with Visual MINTEQ confirm the increased Fe and associated element concentrations in March (lower pH) and the lower metal concentrations in October (lower Eh). R values, ratio of labile dissolved to total dissolved concentrations, reflect the potential of the solid sediment phase to supply labile elements to the porewater. They were lowest for Cu and highest for V. This study showed that anthropogenic activities in the BCZ such as dumping of dredged sludge and blasting of boat hulls have a serious impact on the levels, distribution and bioavailability of contaminants in the sediments, which may form a real threat to the benthic ecosystem.

This study aims to design an eye model that can simulate the fundus for teaching direct ophthalmoscopy and to evaluate its effectiveness.We first used 3D printing materials to make an eye model and then randomly assigned 92 undergraduates into group A (model-assisted training group) and group B (traditional training group) to test our model. After the same training time, real patients were used to test the students, with 120 s as the examination time limit. We recorded the students' ability to clearly see the optic disk, the time to determine the cup-to-disk ratio, and whether they were correct.Forty-three students in group A (93.48%) successfully saw the fundus, while 21 in group B (45.65%) succeeded. The difference between the two groups was 47.83% (95% confidence interval, 29.59-66.07%, P0.0001). The median time to see the fundus was 29s (95% confidence interval 23-45 s) in group A, while an estimated minimum time in group B was 80 s, indicating that group A was significantly faster than group B (P0.0001).This 3D-printed eye model significantly improved the students' study interest, study efficiency, and study results and is worthy of being promoted.

Two fluorescent signal indicators were simply converted from one organic precursor system by using the superior oxidation capability of manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheets for the first time, finally resulting in the successful fabrication of a ratio fluorometric bioassay of alkaline phosphatase (ALP).

Do embryo euploidy rates differ in the four groups of women with low prognosis as stratified by the POSEIDON criteria?This was a retrospective cohort study of low-prognosis patients who met the POSEIDON criteria and underwent preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A) from January 2013 to June 2020 at the Center for Reproductive Medicine, Shandong University, China. A total of 3016 blastocysts from 1269 PGT-A cycles were included in the study. The primary outcome was the euploidy rate of the blastocysts. For each group, regression analyses were performed to quantitatively describe the relationship between maternal age and embryo euploidy rate.The euploidy rate of embryos in women with poor ovarian response (POR) was 39.1% in total. There were 727, 1052, 275 and 962 blastocysts in groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively, with corresponding embryo euploidy rates of 57.2%, 34.9%, 52.4% and 26.2% (P0.001). Within each group, the euploidy rate decreased with age, especially in women aged 35 years or older (i.e. groups 2 and 4).Euploidy rates were more favourable in groups 1 and 3, of a young age, re-emphasizing that oocyte quality is the primary factor determining embryo euploidy rate. The study's findings demonstrated the reasonability of categorizing women with POR by the POSEIDON criteria depending on female age and ovarian reserve biomarkers. These results also provide information for women with POR in different subgroups so they can receive proper counselling on the possible prognosis.

The development of nanozyme-based photothermometric sensing for point-of-care testing (POCT) heavy metal ions is of great significance for disease diagnosis and health management. Considering the low catalytic activity of most nanozymes at physiological pH, we found bismuth ions (Bi3+) could effectively enhance the peroxidase (POX)-like activity of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and citrate-capped octahedral gold nanoparticle (CTAB/Cit-AuNP) nanozymes. It is mainly based on Bi3+ ions being able to trigger the surface cleaning effect of CTAB/Cit-AuNPs. Because the more active Bi3+ ions could effectively bind with citrate on the gold surface and competitively destroy the electrostatic interaction between citrate and CTAB, resulting in the removal of CTAB ligands from the gold surface. Without the ligand protection, CTAB/Cit-AuNPs aggregated immediately, and further resulted in a significant activation of the POX-like activity of AuNP nanozymes. Based on this principle, we introduced the enzyme substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into this aggregation-induced nanozyme system, and rationally designed a photothermometric platform to quickly and sensitively detect Bi3+ ions by using the good photothermal effect of the oxidation product of TMB (oxTMB). The developed photothermometric method only using a common thermometer has a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 45.7 nM for POCT analysis of Bi3+ ions. This study not only provides a more accurate understanding of the aggregation-induced nanozymes based on the surface cleaning principle, but also shows the potential applications of aggregation-induced nanozymes in the POCT field.

Fenton-like reaction systems have been proven to be efficient as powerful promoters in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) due to their generated reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as ˙OH and ˙O2-, which can further oxidize a specific chromogenic substrate like 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate sensitive color readout and thereby demonstrate more potential in the colorimetric analysis field. However, the inherent drawback of the low rate-limiting step of Fe3+/Fe2+ conversion in the Fenton-like reaction and its resultant inefficiency for H2O2 decomposition hinder its practical applications. We herein communicate an analyte-activated catfish effect based catalysis strategy to promote the Fenton-like reaction, in which dopamine, like a catfish, was added to activate the Fenton-like reaction. By definition, the conversion rate of Fe3+ to Fe2+ in the proposed Fenton-like reaction can be significantly accelerated through a specific DA-mediated electron transfer process which further promotes the reaction activity in the Fenton-like reaction to generate more ˙OH and ˙O2- radicals. As a result, the produced ˙OH and ˙O2- radicals in such a reaction system can significantly oxidize TMB indicator into its oxidation product (TMBox) and therefore indicate the corresponding target-dependent color and photothermal signal readout, enabling the successful fabrication of a more sensitive and stable colorimetric and photothermometric DA sensor. More significantly, this strategy can greatly advance the practical application of Fenton-like reactions in the fields of colorimetric and photothermometric bioassays.

PURPOSE To describe breakthrough vitreous hemorrhage secondary to polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). METHODS Patients with the diagnosis of PCV from January 2005 to March 2020 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital were retrospectively reviewed, cases with breakthrough vitreous hemorrhage were analyzed. Subgroup analysis was conducted regarding pachychoroid PCV and nonpachychoroid PCV. RESULTS Among 722 PCV patients (834 eyes), 103 eyes with breakthrough vitreous hemorrhage (12.4%) were included. Pars plana vitrectomy and proper further interventions could significantly improve the best-corrected visual acuity from logMAR 2.15 ± 0.48 (Snellen 20/2825) to 1.65 ± 0.67 (20/893). Hemorrhagic retinal detachment, baseline central macular thickness, and best-corrected visual acuity were factors associated with final best-corrected visual acuity (P < 0.05). In the pachychoroid PCV group, patients were younger, all had hemorrhagic pigment epithelial detachment, with a higher prevalence of choroidal vascular hyperpermeability and hemorrhagic retinal detachment, thicker subfoveal choroidal thickness, and thinner central macular thickness; besides, the initial pars plana vitrectomy were more complicated, more additional surgeries had to be performed. More eyes in the nonpachychoroid PCV group had received anti-vascular endothelial growth factor or photodynamic therapy, mostly fibrovascular pigment epithelial detachment, the best-corrected visual acuity and the status of the fellow eye were significantly worse. For the final ocular status, more eyes in nonpachychoroid PCV group were taking anti-vascular endothelial growth factor monotherapy, whereas more eyes in pachychoroid PCV group were stable. The choroidal parameters of these two groups were all significantly different. CONCLUSION Breakthrough vitreous hemorrhage is a troublesome complication of PCV. Pars plana vitrectomy and additional interventions are required for better prognosis. Vitreous hemorrhage secondary to pachychoroid PCV or nonpachychoroid PCV have different characteristics and prognosis.

Different mobilization mechanisms control the metal distribution in surface sediments of the Belgium coastal zone (BCZ) and the anoxic Gotland basin (GB). This mobilization was studied using DGT (diffusive gradients in thin films): vertical one-dimensional (1D) profiles of Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were measured at 5 mm intervals, while two-dimensional (2D) high-resolution (100 μm) images of smaller zones of the sediment profile were obtained on separate DGT probes. Removal of dissolved Cd, Cu, and Pb in BCZ sediments caused steep vertical gradients at the sediment-water interface that were well replicated in 1D profiles and 2D images. While 1D profiles showed apparent coincident maxima of Co, Mn, and Fe, 2D images revealed mutually exclusive Co and Fe mobilization. Correlation analysis supported this observation and showed a consistent linkage between Co and Mn. Sharp maxima of some metals in the vertical 1D profiles of GB sediment were attributed to localized mobilization in microniches. Examination of an ∼1 mm diameter Cu and Ni maximum in 2D, defined by ∼300 data points, showed that the metals were supplied from localized decomposition of reactive organic material, rather than from reductively dissolving Fe or Mn oxides, and that they were removed as their sulfides.

Background: The effects of different forms of α–thalassemia on β-thalassemia phenotype has not been clearly described thus far. Methods: Genotype spectrum and hematological features of 873 female diagnosed as β-thalassemia carriers with or without different forms of α-thalassemia was retrospectively analyzed. Results: Thirteen kinds of genotypes were found in the 755 β-thalassemia carriers, including four kinds of β+-thalassemia, eight kinds of β0 -thalassemia and one kind of βE-thalassemia. The values of hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) decreased and red blood cell (RBC) increased in the order of βE, β+- and β0 group (p＜0.05). Nine genotypes were determined from the 43 carriers with concurrent α- and β+-thalassemia and seventeen genotypes were determined from the 75 carriers with concurrent α- and β0 -thalassemia. Significant higher Hb, MCV and MCH values were noted in β+–thalassemia or β0–thalassemia co-inherited with α+-thalassemia or α0-thalassemia as compared to the only β+–thalassemia or β0–thalassemia heterozygosity with normal alpha globin gene (p＜0.05). Moreover, the values of Hb, MCV and MCH increased much more when β0–thalassemia co-inheritance of α0-thalassemia than that of α+-thalassemia (p＜0.05). Conclusion: The β-thalassemia presented diverse molecular heterogeneity and hypochromic microcytosis at various degrees. Co-inherited with α–thalassemia could alleviate phenotype of anemic in β+- or β0-thalassemia, and β0-thalassemia demonstrated milder phenotype with two deletion or mutation in α-globin gene than one.

BackgroundPeripheral Retinal neovascularization is well-described as a complication of X-linked retinoschisis, but less often observed in myopic and primary retinoschisis. We present a case of a myopic female who developed retinal microvascular abnormalities due to retinoschisis and subsequent vitreous hemorrhage which would cause severe visual damage without timely and proper treatment.Case presentationA 38-year-old highly myopic Chinese female complained of blurred vision in her right eye. Her best corrected visual acuitiy was 20/20 OU, and her refraction was − 9.00S OU. Dilated fundus examination revealed mild vitreous hemorrhage and abnormal vascular network nasal to the optic disc in her right eye. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)- angiography (OCTA) B-Scan showed superficial retinoschisis and well-depicted abnormal retinal microvascular network in inner retinal layer. Sectoral scatter laser photocoagulation was administered. Regression of most abnormal vessels was achieved in 1 month, but the patient experienced an unexpected episode of vitreous hemorrhage 3 months after the initial treatment, which was absorbed spontaneously in 2 weeks. Supplemental laser photocoagulation was applied and regular follow-up visit was suggested.ConclusionSuperficial retinoschisis in pathological myopia can be a driver of retinal microvascular abnormalities, possibly neovascularization, an extremely rare but severe complication which can be vision-threatening without timely and proper intervention.

Background: Nowadays, there are more than forty therapeutic regimens of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents existing for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), while numerous controversies exist regarding the ideal agent and optimum strategy. We aimed to give a comprehensive efficacy and safety ranking of these regimens by quantifying data from randomized controlled trials (RCT). Methods: Electronic database searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to December 1, 2019 to identify relevant RCTs on different regimens of anti-VEGF agents for the treatment of nAMD. Two authors screened studies and extracted data independently. Primary outcomes were changes of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for efficacy and the incidence of severe ocular adverse events (ADEs) for safety. The standardized mean difference (SMD), odds ratios (OR), their 95% credible intervals (CI), the surface under the cumulative ranking curves and the mean ranks of each outcome were estimated using network meta-analyses by Stata 14.0. Findings: We identified 47 RCTs, which included 17872 nAMD patients randomly assigned to 36 different therapeutic regimens of anti-VEGF agents or sham treatment. Ranibizumab 0.5mg (TE The combination of radiation, topical NSAIDs and photodynamic therapy might provide additional effect in terms of central retinal thickness (CRT) reduction; All these therapeutic regimens of different anti-VEGF agents do not significantly increase the risk of severe ocular or cardiocerebral vascular ADEs compared with sham treatment (P>0.05). Interpretation: Based on the currently available evidence base, T&E strategy showed top-level effect in terms of visual improvement and there is no significant difference in efficacy or safety between Ranibizumab, Bevacizumab and Aflibercept. The combination of topical NSAIDs provides additional effect in terms of CRT reduction and all the included regimens have acceptable risk of ADEs. Further study is worth to evaluate whether T&E strategy of anti-VEGF agents plus topical NSAIDs could achieve better efficacy than current regimens. Herein, a simple strategy for constructing activity-controllable nanozymes is proposed based on the glutathione (GSH)-gated surface chemistry of citrate-capped Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs). PtNPs have been shown to have oxidase-like activity that can effectively catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tertamethylbenzidine (TMB) by O2, resulting in a typical color reaction from colorless to blue. We found that GSH can inhibit the oxidase-like activity of PtNPs as a molecule-gated surface chemistry element, resulting in a dramatic decrease of the oxidation of TMB. The addition of copper ions (Cu2+) could oxidize GSH into glutathione disulfide (GSSG), resulting in the distinct suppression of GSH-modulated PtNP surface chemistry and oxidase-like activity inhibition, which further results in a significant acceleration of TMB oxidation and the obvious recovery of intense blue color. Furthermore, the color-based detection signal associated with the redox of TMB indicator here was found to show good fluorescence and a photothermal effect and exhibit sensitive and selective response toward the proposed molecule-gated surface chemistry and Cu2+ target. On the basis of this phenomenon, we successfully constructed a three-in-one sensor for Cu2+ with a triple signal readout, colorimetric, photothermal (temperature), and fluorescence, depending on the proposed in situ modulation method for PtNP catalysis. The applicability of the three-in-one sensor was also demonstrated by measuring Cu2+ in human serum with a standard addition method, and the results are of satisfactory accuracy as confirmed by ICP-MS measurements.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have recently proposed for advancing colorimetric sensing applications, owing to their excellent performance of sensitive color readout that generated from the oxidation of chromogenic substrates like 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by reactive oxygen species (ROS) of AOPs such as ·OH and ·O2− radicals. However, the efficiency of ROS generation and the related H2O2 decomposition in most AOPs is quite low especially at neutral pH, which greatly hampered the practical sensing applications of the AOPs. We herein communicated that β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-capped gold nanoparticles (β-CD@AuNPs) can promote catalysis at neutral pH for AOP as an excellent co-catalyst. In this strategy, inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) ions was first used to coordinate with Cu2+ and form Cu2+-PPi complex. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, target inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) can hydrolyze PPi into inorganic phosphate (Pi) and release free Cu2+ simultaneously, resulting in a Cu2+-triggered Fenton-like AOP reaction. The introduced β-CD@AuNPs acts as a co-catalyst, analogous to mediators in the most co-catalyzed system, to enhance the rate-limiting step of Cu2+/Cu+ conversion in Cu2+/H2O2 Fenton-like AOP and resulting in an efficient generation of ·OH and ·O2− radicals, which further producing an intense blue color by oxidizing TMB into its oxidation product (TMBox) within a short time. Finally, this reaction system was used to simply detecting target PPase with the colorimetric and photothermal readout based on the in-situ generated TMBox indicator. More significantly, we successfully demonstrated nanozyme can serve as a co-catalyst to promote the AOP catalysis at neutral pH, and inspire other strategies to overcome the pH limitation in the AOP catalysis and expand its colorimetric and photothermometric application.

Background Bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation (BDUMP) is an extremely rare paraneoplastic syndrome, with most cases reported as secondary to female urogenital and male lung malignancies. We reported this case of BDUMP patient whose primary malignancy was gastric adenocarcinoma verified with gastroscopy and subsequent pathological test. Case presentation A patient complaining blurred vision was suspected of bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation (BDUMP), due to bilateral round oval patches at the posterior pole and cardinal signs in retinal angiography. Malignancy screening was suggested, and pathological report from gastroscopy confirmed the primary lesion as gastric adenocarcinoma. The patient chose palliative care due to late stage and unresectable nature of the malignancy. Conclusions Identifying BDUMP warrants further investigation of a primary malignancy. Our case provided evidence for the link between gastric adenocarcinoma and BDUMP.

Nanozymes-catalyzed 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) reaction systems have been extensively used for fabricating colorimetric sensors, but they still require advanced instruments like color analysis software or ultraviolet spectrophotometers to achieve accurate quantitative analysis. Herein, we explored an alternative strategy to convert a color readout to a temperature readout of a CoOOH nanoflakes-TMB colorimetric reaction system, and successfully fabricated a simple and facile photothermometric sensor of acid phosphatase (ACP) by using a common thermometer as the reader. It mainly performed based on the strong photothermal effect of the oxidation product (TMBox) of TMB upon an 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, which showed a close relationship with the ACP content with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 0.037 mU/mL for photothermometric ACP determination. This photothermometric method was proved to be suitable for not only sensing ACP but also screening its inhibitor in human serum, and providing a simple, rapid, convenient, low cost, and portable organic chromogenic substrate-based sensing platform.
