Abstract Background Individuals with Down syndrome exhibit particular oro-facial characteristics that may increase their risk of oral health problems. However, there is little research on the oral health of children and adults with Down syndrome and the way that oral health may affect Quality of Life (QoL). This study explored mothers’ perceptions of the oral health problems experienced by their children with Down syndrome and how these reported problems impacted the lives of the children and their families. Methods The study involved 20 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with mothers of children and adolescents aged 12–18 years with Down syndrome attending special care centres in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Results The predominant oral-health related problem reported by mothers was difficulty in speaking. Mothers also reported that tooth decay and toothache were problems that had undesirable effects on different aspects of their children’s QoL including: performing daily activities, emotional wellbeing, and social relationships. Poor oral health and functional problems had direct and indirect impacts on the family’s QoL as well. Conclusion Mothers perceived an array of QoL impacts from oral conditions, which affected their child with Down syndrome and the wider family.

Objective: To assess the perceptions of mothers with stunted children regarding the factors contributing to stunting in Kampar Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia., Introduction: Stunting is intricately linked to underlying risk factors, and understanding these factors is crucial for preventing its recurrence, particularly for mothers who play a central role in caring for stunted children., Methods: The research sample consisted of mothers referred by the Perhentian Raja Community Health Center with stunted children. Purposive sampling was employed to select informants and thematic analysis was used for data analysis., Results: A total of 15 informants were interviewed, leading to the identification of five themes related to stunting risks: (1) before pregnancy, (2) during pregnancy, (3) postnatal, (4) infectious disease factors, and (5) socio-demographic factors., Conclusion: The study indicates that mothers hold diverse opinions about factors contributing to stunting, with their views being shaped by health programs and personal experiences, specifically focusing on aspects like breastfeeding and weaning foods. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms on maternal perception of the infant and the protective role of social support. Background: Adverse effects of perinatal depression on mother-child interaction are well documented; however, the role of maternal perception has not been examined. Methods: We used the data of 431 women enrolled in a prospective study in a single maternity unit. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the mother’s perception of infant with the Mother’s Object Relation Scale (MORS). We used Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) in order to measure social support. Results: Depressive and anxiety symptoms were positively associated to less positive emotions and a more dominant attitude of child as perceived by mothers. This association was even more significant in the case of trait anxiety. Perceived social support has been found to be a protective factor which was able to reduce this tendency. Conclusion: The findings have potential implications for our understanding of the impact of maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms on the developing mother-infant relationship. The habitual of Some mothers living around Posyandu Mojowuku tend not to provide their babies with measles immunization because of the perception that measles immunization can cause fever in babies. The fact that they do not receive information about immunization from the health workers creates a wrong perception that brings bad effects to babies. Hence, the purpose of this study was to find out the correlation between mother’s perception and measles immunization in babies aged over 9 months. This study was cross sectional approach involved the population of all mothers having babies aged over 9 months, totaling 63 couples. The samples of research 54 respondents were chosen using Non Probability sampling and Purposive sampling technique. Questionnaire and maternal-child health booklet were used to collect the data. Analyzed using Chi-Square test with the level of significance α = 0.05. The result showed that most of the mothers (66.7%) had positive perception about measles immunization, whereas most of the babies (70.4%) received measles immunization. Moreover, the result of Chi-Square test showed that ρ = 0,000 < so that H0 was rejected illustrating that there was a correlation between mother’s perception and measles immunization in babies aged over 9 months. Mother’s perception significantly affected the coverage of measles immunization in babies. Hence, those who have negative perception about measles immunization are expected to change their opinion and perception to avoid dangers for their babies. Moreover, the health workers are also expected to promote activities of providing them with health education to increase their awareness of measles immunization.

Introduction: A cultural myth Ogbanje have existed among the Ibo people of Nigeria. These children may have morbidities that are manageable while some normal children may have to live with the stigma of being labelled such. The objective of this study was to assess mother's perception of ogbanje phenomenon and morbidity in ogbanje children. Material and Methods: This was a Cross-sectional study amongst mothers having the concept of "Ogbanje" children who were clinically examined. SPSS version 20.0 was used for data analysis. Variables were compared with χ². p<0.05 was accepted as significant. Results: A total of 64.8% believed in "Ogbanje". Commonest presentation of "Ogbanje" was frequent illness (47.3%). Only 12(3.3%) would seek orthodox care for ogbanje children. Examined "ogbanje" children had sickle-cell anaemia, structural anomalies, and diabetes. Four (9.5%; n=42) children were normal. Conclusion: Ogbanje myth still exists in the minds of mothers and affects health seeking behaviour. Ogbanje children may have manageable illness and sometimes may be normal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a serious problem causing physical, social and psychosocial harm. To understand the Jordanian mothers' efforts to prevent CSA, we assessed the mothers' general knowledge about CSA, their perceptions, knowledge about signs and symptoms of CSA and their knowledge about prevention practices of CSA in relation to their demographics. A cross- sectional descriptive design was used with a convenient sample of 488 mothers. The data was collected using a self-reported questionnaire consisting of 52 items. Descriptive and parametric and non-parametric statistical procedures were employed. Almost all mothers in the study were Muslim and married. Half of the mothers had post-secondary education and only 36% were employed. The study revealed that the majority of mothers were knowledgeable about CSA and its prevention practices. Though only 17% of mothers had started practicing some of the CSA preventive measures when their children were young (1-4 years of age) and less than half (48.8%) had started when their children were 4-6 years of age. Three quarters (74%) of the mothers indicated that educating children about CSA can prevent it. Only 37.7% knew about laws regarding CSA in Jordan and less than half of mothers knew about social organizations that provide services for children who suffered from sexual abuse. Mothers who had a high income or a high level of education or were employed had a higher awareness of CSA and recognized signs and symptoms of CSA more than other mothers., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
