Any genetic improvement in dairy cattle requires information on productive and reproductive performance in the given population. Animals have been selected to improve their productivity in order to increase the profitability to the farmer. As a result, selection of animals is made for higher production and a shortened productive life. The reproductive performance of Friesian cows under intensive and semi-intensive management system in Bangladesh is poor. Animal selection has historically been based on production traits, and not much attention was given to AI recording. Many attempts were taken scatterly to increase productive and reproductive potential of Bangladeshi cattle for different periods with variable achievements. Therefore, in this review article we have addressed the new tools and information that could be used to determine the level of productive and reproductive performance and to evaluate genetic factors using admixture analysis of cows bred by AI sires which affect reproductive traits of crossbred Friesian dairy cows reared in selected areas in Bangladesh. Background: Costochondral graft has been used as a substitute for a growth center in the damaged Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in the growing children. But the relapse of the TMJ ankylosis along with facial deformity is the most common outcome after the surgery for the resorption or overgrowth of the graft. While an exploration of the human Temporomandibular joint seems to be unethical after reconstruction with an autogenous costochondral graft for study purposes, therefore we sought to determine the growth potential of the graft by clinical evaluation. Material and methods: An experimental study was done on 96 New Zealand white male rabbits, which were divided into batches. Each batch (total 2 batches) contained 24 experimental and 24 control rabbits of known ages and species; growing (3-4) and adult (12-18) months old. TMJ arthroplasty with a costochondral graft using either 1mm or 4 mm thickness of cartilaginous cap done in both age groups. Follow-up was done regularly in batches comparing with control up to 4th, 12th, and 24th weeks of surgery to find out any relationship of behavioral change, clinical presentation, and macroscopic growth of the graft. Results: There was a relationship among the rabbits with their behavioral change, clinical presentation, and presence of growth center in the graft. Growth was found in 60% cases, 40% was growing, and 20% in adults. Conclusions: Costochondral graft had a 60% growth potentiality. The failure rate of 40% may be due to some unknown factors. Grafts grew in a greater number of growing rabbits than adults. Long time follow-up had a strong role in the growth of the graft. In conclusion, clinical evaluation of the rabbit model provided a fair estimation of the growth process.

The objective of this research work was to know ovarian dynamics and pregnancy rate of cyclic Murrah buffalo cows with induced estrus by administration of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and timed artificial insemination (TAI) with frozen thawed semen. A total of 31 female buffaloes were selected for the study. The buffalos having matured CL observed by ultrasonography were given one intra muscular injection of cloprostenol 500 μg and TAI was performed using frozen thawed semen of Indian Murrah buffalo bull. Results showed that 90.32% (significantly, at p < 0.05) cows explore the sign of heat after injection of PG and 67.85% (significantly, at p < 0.05) cows were become pregnant out of 28 inseminated (TAI) cows. In the 28 inseminated (TAI) cows, average number of smaller and larger size of follicles were non-significantly (p > 0.05) higher at day 3 post PG injection, but the medium size of follicles was nonsignificantly (p > 0.05) higher at PG injection. At day 3 post PG injection the diameter of follicles was significantly (p < 0.05) higher, but the diameter of CL was significantly ( p < 0.01) lower compared at PG injection. At PG injection the diameter of largest follicle was non-significantly differences (p > 0.05) in between pregnant and non-pregnant cows. But at day 3 post PG injection it was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in pregnant cows compared to non-pregnant cows. The number of small, medium, and large follicles at PG injection and at day 3 post PG injection were non-significantly (p > 0.05) difference in between pregnant and non-pregnant buffalo cows. Finally, it is concluded that the CL was effectively regresses and induced the sign of heat in buffalo cows and after AI the cows were become pregnant with significant rate. The study will help to the veterinarian and researcher to know the efficacy of PG injection and AI for reproductive efficiency in buffalo cows.

Objective: The objective of this research work is to know the productive and reproductive perfor¬mances and problems of local, crossbred, Nilli, and Murrah buffalo cows in selected study areas in Bangladesh. Methodology: A total of 1,241 local, crossbred, Nilli, and Murrah buffalo cows were surveyed in the selected areas with a pre-set questionnaire. Among 1,241 buffalo cows, 112 buffalo cows were randomly selected at day 0 of the estrus cycle for studying ovarian features. Results: Results showed that the average age, body condition score, and body weight were sig¬nificantly (p < 0.05) different among the studied breeds. Milk production in Murrah and lactation length in Nilli cows were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than indigenous, crossbred, Nilli, and indig¬enous, crossbred, Murrah buffalo cows, respectively. Results also illustrated that sexual maturity, estrus cycle length, insemination time after the onset of estrus, and gestation length insignifi¬cantly (p > 0.05) varied among the surveyed breed. But, the fallout of the study denoted that estrus duration, first calving age, parity number, number of service per conception, calving inter¬val, and voluntary waiting period varied significantly (p < 0.05) in different breeds. Ovarian phys¬iological characteristics such as vaginal electrical resistance, average number of follicles in two ovaries, and largest follicular diameter, estrogen, and progesterone at day 0 of the estrus cycle of local, crossbred, Nilli, and Murrah buffalo cows showed insignificantly (p > 0.05) differences. A group of pneumonia patients was detected in Hubei Province, in China in December 2019. The etiology of the disease was unknown. Later, the researchers diagnosed the novel Coronavirus as the causal agent of this respiratory disease. On February 12th 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially named this disease Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Consequently, the disease spread globally and became a pandemic. As there is no specific treatment for the symptomatic patients and several vaccines are approved by WHO, the efficacy and effectiveness of these vaccines are not fully understood yet and the availability of these vaccines are very limited. In addition, new variants and mutants of SARS-CoV-2 are thought to be able to evade the immune system of the host. So, diagnosis and isolation of infected individuals is advised. Currently, real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is considered the gold standard method to detect novel Coronavirus, however, there are few limitations associated with RT-PCR such as false-negative results. This demanded another diagnostic tool to detect and isolate COVID-19 early and accurately. Chest computed tomography (CT) became another option to diagnose COVID-19 patients accurately (about 98% sensitivity). However, it did not apply to the asymptomatic carriers and sometimes the results were misinterpreted as from other groups of Coronavirus infection. The combination of RT-PCR and chest CT might be the best option in detecting novel Coronavirus infection early and accurately thereby allowing adaptation of measures for the prevention and control of the COVID-19.En diciembre de 2019 se detectó un grupo de pacientes con neumonía en la provincia de Hubei, China, desconociéndose la etiología de la enfermedad. Posteriormente, los investigadores señalaron al nuevo coronavirus como agente causal de esta enfermedad respiratoria. El 12 de febrero de 2020, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) la designó oficialmente como enfermedad por coronavirus de 2019 (COVID-19). A continuación, dicha enfermedad se propagó a nivel global, y se convirtió en una pandemia. No existe tratamiento específico para los pacientes sintomáticos, y la OMS ha aprobado diversas vacunas. Sin embargo, la eficacia y la efectividad de las mismas no se comprende plenamente aún, siendo muy limitada su disponibilidad. Además, se piensa que las diferentes variantes y mutaciones del SARS-CoV-2 son capaces de evadir el sistema inmune del huésped. Por tanto, se recomienda el diagnóstico y aislamiento de las personas infectadas. Actualmente se considera la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa con transcriptasa inversa (RT-PCR) a tiempo real el método de referencia para detectar el nuevo coronavirus. Sin embargo, existen algunas limitaciones asociadas a RT-PCR tales como los resultados falso-negativos. En consecuencia, ello ha demandado otra herramienta diagnóstica para detectar y aislar la COVID-19 de manera temprana y precisa. La tomografía computarizada (TC) de tórax se ha convertido en otra opción para diagnosticar de manera precisa a los pacientes con COVID-19 (cerca del 98% de sensibilidad). Sin embargo no se aplica a los portadores asintomáticos, y a veces se han malinterpretado los resultados como en el caso de otros grupos de infección por coronavirus. La combinación de RT-PCR y TC de tórax podría ser la mejor opción para detectar la nueva infección por coronavirus de manera temprana y precisa, permitiendo, por tanto, la adaptación de las medidas para la prevención y el control de la COVID-19.

The study was aimed to evaluate methods for nonsurgical castration of Black Bengal bucks by intra-testicular injection of calcium chloride, sodium chloride, citric acid solutions or sterile deionized water. Twelve healthy bucks were randomly allotted to groups A, B, C, and D, consisting of three bucks each. The local anesthetic, 2% lidocaine hydrochloride, was infused into the spermatic cord of each buck, followed by bilateral intra-testicular injections of 30% calcium chloride (CaCl2), 25% sodium chloride (NaCl), 50% citric acid (C6H8O7) solutions, and sterile deionized water dosed at 2 ml per testis in groups A, B, C and D respectively. To evaluate the efficacy of chemical agents on the inactivation of testes, clinical parameters, changes in scrotal circumference, testicular fine needle aspiration (TFNA), histopathology and serum concentration of testosterone and LH were monitored. A significant decrease in the scrotal circumference was observed between the intra-testicular injection and day 14 in all the bucks. Absence of spermatogenic cells and spermatozoa in the testicular biopsy was observed on day 14 post injection in the bucks, except for one in group C. Histopathology revealed massive destruction of seminiferous tubules and disorganization of the testicular parenchyma. Serum testosterone concentration declined significantly on day 14 compared with day 0. Consequently, the gradual elevation in serum LH concentration was significant. Thus, intra-testicular injections of CaCl2 and NaCl were more effective than C6H8O7 in inducing chemical-based nonsurgical castration.

This article aims to highlight some of the contributions from Bangladeshi and Malaysian women scientists in the fields of health informatics, medical physics and biomedical engineering, and veterinary science in combating the COVID-19 world crisis. The status of COVID-19 situations in Bangladesh and Malaysia in respect to global scenario, some relevant government policies, lessons learnt from previous pandemics, socio-economic impacts of COVID-19, the impact on healthcare system and health management approaches taken by individual/institutional research group led by women scientists during the COVID-19 pandemic have been discussed and demonstrated in this article. These promising activities and initiatives will eventually motivate other women in science and extend their roles from laboratory to society in more aspects.

Background: Amid a critical and emergent situation like the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic related to extreme health and economic repercussions, we used and presented the mathematical modeling like susceptible–infectious–recovered (SIR) to have a numerical demonstration that can shed light to decide the fate of the scourge in Bangladesh. To describe the idea about the factors influencing the outbreak data, we presented the current situation of the COVID-19 outbreak with graphical trends.Methods: Primary data were collected and analyzed by using a pre-created Google Survey form having a pre-set questionnaire on the social distancing status of different districts. Secondary data on the total and the daily number of laboratory tests, confirmed positive cases, and death cases were extracted from the publicly available sources to make predictions. We estimated the basic reproduction number (R◦) based on the SIR mathematical model and predicted the probable fate of this pandemic in Bangladesh.Results: Quarantine situations in different regions of Bangladesh were evaluated and presented. We also provided tentative forecasts until 31 May 2020 and found that the predicted curve followed the actual curve approximately. Estimated R◦-values (6.924) indicated that infection rate would be greater than the recovery rate. Furthermore, by calibrating the parameters of the SIR model to fit the reported data, we assume the ultimate ending of the pandemic in Bangladesh by December 2022.Conclusion: We hope that the results of our analysis could contribute to the elucidation of critical aspects of this outbreak and help the concerned authority toward decision making.

Objective: This study was undertaken to compare the curative efficacy of marigold leaf paste and turmeric paste on healing the incised wound in sheep. The study also determined the anti¬microbial effects and histopathological changes in a wounds healing process treated with these medicinal herbs. Materials and Methods: Surgical wounds (n = 18) were created aseptically in the skin of the flank region of six healthy sheep dividing them into three experimental groups. Follow-up data were taken up to day 21. Different morphological characteristics of the wound and wound contraction (length and width) were recorded weekly. Samples were collected on days 1, 2, and 3 to test the antimicrobial effects and on days 1, 3, and 7 for histopathological studies. Results: Treatment with marigold leaf paste and turmeric paste resulted in a swelled wound area of 11.78 ± 0.38 mm and 11.52 ± 0.27 mm, respectively. The wound areas were comparatively lower than that of the control group (11.44 ± 0.20 mm). Moreover, the least elevation (2.44 ± 0.12 mm) of the sutured line from the skin surface was noted and compared between the marigold leaf paste and normal saline (2.74 ± 0.13 mm). Bacterial colonies in the nutrient agar medium cultured with swabs from the normal saline-treated groups wound area were found on day 1. On the con¬trary, bacterial colonies were absent on days 2 and 3 of treatment in the groups treated with both the paste of marigold leaves and turmeric. Less intense tissue reactions and higher keratinization of epithelium were shown in the group treated with marigold leaf paste than turmeric paste and saline-treated groups. Conclusion: Marigold leaf paste showed less tissue reaction and healed the wounds effectively. Thus, this paste could be used for the treatment of superficial wounds in sheep. The study was aimed to identify the effective cervical ripening treatment to increase the pregnancy rates following transcervical artificial insemination (TC-AI) in indigenous ewes of Bangladesh. Three treatments schedules were compared, G1 (n = 6, control), G2 [n = 6, prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) as Misoprostol-Cytomis®] and G3 (n = 6, estrogen as Oestriol-Ovestin® + oxytocin as Linda-S® Vet). Ewes (n=18) were synchronized for estrus using two doses of 100 µg prostaglandin (PGF2α; Ovuprost®) 9 days apart. The cervical ripening treatments were administered just after the onset of estrus and left for 12 h before TC-AI. The cervical ripening was reflected with the depth of cervical penetration. The depth of cervical penetration in G1, G2 and G3 both before and after cervical ripening treatments were 0.33 ± 0.10 cm vs 0.43 ± 0.07 cm, 0.41 ± 0.09 cm vs 3.50 ± 0.26 cm and 0.43 ± 0.09 cm vs 1.54 ± 0.14 cm, respectively. The study was conducted to determine the occurrence of fractures in calves and goats at Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and to compare the efficacy of fracture treatment with external and internal fixation using splints and bone plate/wire suture respectively. Patients brought to VTH with the history of automobile accident, trauma and clinical signs suggestive of fractures were subjected to detailed physical, orthopaedic and radiographic examinations to confirm fractures. A total of 6 calves and 4 Black Bengal goats were presented to VTH with limb fractures. Fractures were treated with close reduction and external fixation with splints and bandage, and open reduction and internal fixation with wire suture and bone plate. 50% and 75% fracture cases healed properly in calves and goats respectively. Among the affected animals, 60% were females irrespective of species. Metacarpal bone was the most susceptible for limb fracture. Three were open fractures and 7 cases were closed fracture with the occurrence of 70%. Introduction: The ovarian follicular dynamics, vaginal electrical resistance (VER), progesterone (P4) and oestrogen (E2) profiles were investigated during the oestrous cycle in four indigenous ewes. Material and Methods: Daily VER values were recorded with a heat detector. The follicles were observed and measured by trans-rectal ultrasonography. Blood was collected daily for hormonal profiles. Results: A significant variation in VER values (P < 0.05) in oestrus by ewes and position in the sequence of cycles was observed. Trans-rectal ultrasonography of ovaries revealed the presence of 2–4 waves of follicular growth. Study of hormonal profiles by ELISA revealed a positive correlation between E2 concentration and development of follicles and a negative correlation between P4 concentration and their development. The concentrations of oestradiol increased in oestrus and then decreased to a basal level. Follicular growth was accompanied by a rise in the concentration of serum oestradiol. Inversely, when follicles received the stimulation for ovulation, concentration of progesterone started to fall, but after ovulation, it climbed back to its peak and remained at this state until next ovulatory follicle reached its maximum diameter. Conclusion: This study could help to set up a manipulative reproductive technique for improving genetic values in indigenous sheep.

The effects of PMSG on superovulation, quality of embryos, and pregnancy rate were studied following transfer of vitrified embryos into indigenous ewes. Three donor and nine recipient ewes were synchronized using two intramuscular doses of Cloprostenol (PGF2α) equivalent to 125 μg Prostaglandin F2α (Ovoprost® Bayer, New Zealand) at an interval of nine days. To ensure ovulation donor and recipient ewes were treated with 600 iu and 250 iu Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotrophin (PMSG; Folligon®, Intervet, Boxmeer, The Netherlands) at the time of 2nd injection of Prostaglandin F2α. All donor ewes were mated by fertile rams. Embryos were collected from donor ewes on day six after mating by inguinal laparotomy. Grade 1 embryos were vitrified using standard procedure. After thawing the embryos were transferred into the exteriorized uterine horn of the recipient by inguinal laparotomy. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed by trans-abdominal ultrasonography on Day 40 of transfer. Oestrus occurred 31.3 ± 8.1 hours after second injection of prostaglandin and 32.6 ± 8.7 hours in recipients. Oestrus lasted 24.7 ± 9.9 hours in donors and 32.8 ± 12.8 hours in recipients. The mean numbers of corpora lutea and embryos of donor ewes were 11.7 ± 4.0 and 8 ± 2.6, respectively. Total embryo recovery rate of donor ewes was 68.6%. The mean values of qualities of embryo yield of donor ewes were 6 ± 1.7 grade 1, 0.3 ± 0.6 grade 2, 1.3 ± 1.2 grade 3, and 0.3 ± 0.6 grade 4. The study was done to evaluate the effect of Xylazine-Ketamine and Xylazine- Thiopentone combinations for general anaesthesia in sheep. Six healthy sheep were divided into two groups: Group XK (n = 3), anaesthetized with Xylazine-Ketamine and Group XT (n = 3), anaesthetized with xylazine-thiopentone. Anaesthesia was induced using 1.1 mg/kg xylazine with 10 mg/kg ketamine or 20 mg/kg thiopentone as a single intravenous injection. Induction, duration and recovery from anaesthesia were monitored. Respiratory rate, heart rate and rectal temperature were recorded 15 min before and 5 min after induction, and 15 and 30 min and 24 hours after recovery. Packed Cell Volume (PCV) (%), Haemoglobin (Hb) (g/dL), Total Leucocyte Count (TLC) (millions per cubic millimetre) and Total Erythrocyte Count (TEC; Thousands per cubic millimetre) were measured before anaesthesia, one hour after induction and 24 hours after recovery. Heart rate increased significantly in both XT and XK groups and returned to control value 24 hours after recovery. Respiration rate decreased at 15 min after induction, then highly increased at 30 min and then returned to control value 24 hours after recovery in XK group. Rectal temperature decreased significantly in both groups. Hb, TLC, and TEC decreased, but PCV increased significantly in both groups. The mean time of induction of anaesthesia was less in XT group (0.2 ± 0.0 min) than in group XK (2.7 ± 0.1 min). The duration of anaesthesia and its recovery was less in Group XK than in Group XT. A combination of Xylazine-Ketamine and Xylazine-Thiopentone can be used to induce short term anaesthesia in sheep with negligible effects on clinical and haematological parameters.Bangl. vet. 2017. Prevalence of lameness was investigated in 1000 randomly selected cattle in Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and different dairy farms in Boira Union, Mymensingh during January to December 2015. The aetiology, age [Cal≤f 1 year, 1 - 3 years, 3 - 5 years and >5 years], sex (male, female), different stages of cattle [Calves, Heifers, Pregnant cows, Lactating cows, Dry cows, and Bulls] and floor type (concrete, muddy floor, pavement, straw yard) were studied. Out of 1000 cattle examined, 111 (11.1%) showed lameness in different grades, with 82.0% slightly, 14.4% moderately and 3.6% severely lame. The aetiologies of lameness are upward fixation of patella, traumatic injury, foot and mouth disease (FMD) complications, arthritis, interdigital hyperplasia, interdigital dermatitis and interdigital necrobacillosis. Higher percentages of lameness were in hind limbs than fore limbs. Left hind limbs were more frequently affected than right hind limbs. Animals over 5 years of age were most vulnerable to lameness. Female especially high yielding cows were at higher risk (69.4%) than the male cattle (30.6%). Prevalence of lameness was higher when cattle were confided to the concrete floor than the muddy floor. Pregnant cows were the most vulnerable to lameness. It is suggested that aetiology, age, sex, different stages of cattle and floor type could be considered as risk factors causing lameness in cattle.Bangl. vet. 2017. Vol. 34, No. 1, 1-8

To determine the effectiveness of propofol alone (P), and the combination of xylazine-propofol (XP), xylazineketamine (XK), xylazine-thiopentone (XT), anaesthetic protocols were studied in randomly selected 16 healthy indigenous pigs of either sexes, age 12 to 15 months and weight ranging from 12 to 16 kg. The responses of propofol and the combinations in different stages of anaesthesia were closely monitored. Various reflex responses and muscle tenacity were also observed concurrently during the period of anaesthesia. The study found the shortest (0.29±0.02 min) induction period with XT anaesthesia and the longest (2.95±0.21 min) by XK; whereas, induction of anaesthesia with P and XP was 0.4±0.08 and 0.41±0.08 min respectively. The time required for maximum depth of anaesthesia was the shortest in P (7.50±0.65 min) than the combinations. However, the anaesthetic protocol with XP produced the highest (65.25±3.30 min) duration of anaesthesia than the shortest (10.75±1.75 min) extent with P. Moreover, time to recovery from anaesthesia was higher (83.25±2.14 min) in XT and shorter (18.50±1.32 min) in P protocol. Good muscle relaxation was observed in XP, XK and XT combinations. Palpebral, conjunctival, jaw, tail and digital reflexes were almost absent in XP and XT combinations. The study concluded that propofol itself is a safe anaesthetic for short surgical interventions and its combination with xylazine is to be recommended for prolonged surgical procedures in swine.

Herbal preparations are used traditionally in wound management to promote wound healing process. In Bangladesh, there are limited researches on the use of herbal products to assist healing process. Therefore, this experiment was carried out to exploit turmeric (Curcuma longa) and durba (Cynodon dactylon) pastes in the treatment of surgical wounds in cattle and to study their healing effect on wound sutured with horizontal mattress using nylon. A total of 36 surgical wounds were made in six cattle. Tincture benzoin was used as control group. Follow-up information was recorded from day 0 to day 21 postoperatively. Some morphological characters such as swelling area of wound, elevation of sutured line from the skin surface, width of sutured area and contraction length per week were recorded to determine the healing process of the wounds. Bacteriological and histopathological studies were also performed. All wounds were closely monitored to observe any complications such as swelling, wound dehiscence, suture abscess, local infection and exudation etc. Results showed that Tr. Benzoin seal caused marked tissue reaction in wounds in comparison to turmeric and durba paste. Turmeric paste showed splendid results in the healing of the wounds produced in cattle. Durba paste also has wound healing activity but less effective than that of turmeric. This study could help veterinarians to consider herbal products especially turmeric for healing of wounds with minimum complications. Dissemination of these findings among the farmers may prevent skin degradation caused by the postoperative complications of the wound and thus improve the health status of livestock.Asian J. Med. The experiment was carried out to detect the blood serum testosterone concentration after orchiectomy in Black Bengal bucks (Capra hircus). Semen was collected from four rams, using artificial vagina and viability%, motility% and plasma membrane integrity% were measured. Fresh ejaculates (n = 32) were separated by modified swim-up separation using modified human tubal fluid medium. Four fractions of supernatant were collected at 15-minute intervals. The mean volume, mass activity, concentration, motility%, viability%, normal morphology and membrane integrity% (HOST +ve) of fresh semen were 1.0 ± 0.14, 4.1 ± 0.1 × 109 spermatozoa/ml, 85.0 ± 1.3, 89.4 ± 1.0, 85.5 ± 0.7, 84.7 ± 0.5 respectively. Study was conducted to observe the influence of different factors on pregnancy rate in 24 indigenous ewes following artificial insemination (AI) with frozen semen. The ewes were synchronized by intra-muscular injection of Prostaglandin F2α (Ovuprost® Bayer, New Zealand). Cryopreservation of oocytes by vitrification technique may contribute a lot in the field of reproductive biotechnology. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effectiveness of two cryo-devices for vitrification of immature oocytes of indigenous zebu cows. Slaughter house derived immature cumulus-oocyte-complexes (COCs) of cows were vitrified using 15% dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) as cryoprotective agent (CPA) with 0.5 mol sucrose in TCM 199 supplemented with 20% FBS. Vitrification of COCs was completed after immediate plunging of COCs loaded cryotop or French mini straw into the liquid nitrogen (LN2). Efficient and accurate detection of estrus and correct time of artificial insemination are essential for sustainable dairy farms. Therefore, this study was carried out to monitor oestrus by observing vaginal electrical impedance (VEI) in post-partum cows. Eighteen cows with 19-139 post-partum days were included for this study. Daily VEI values were measured with heat detector®. Lower vaginal electrical resistance (VER) values were recorded during oestrus. VER of 210-240 ? might be indicative for oestrus in cows. The day difference between two successive lower values or higher values in “VER waves” ranged from 18 to 22 days in cows which might indicates the oestrous cycle length. Marked variation existed between VER values of two successive peaks in pregnant and non-pregnant cows, and increased (P < 0.05) VER values were observed in 2nd peak in pregnant cows. VER of 320-370 ? at 19-22 days after AI could be considered for early pregnancy. The study suggests that the measurement of vaginal impedance could serve as an indicator of the oestrus in cows and daily impedance measurements are necessary to confirm the stages of the estrous cycle, correct time of AI and early pregnancy.Asian J. Congenital urinary tract obstruction is a developmental anomaly which may persist after birth in new born calves. To determine the occurrence of congenital urinary obstructionand to evaluate tube cystostomy for the management of congenital urinary obstruction inneonatal calves two studies were conducted. A retrospective study was performed toobserve the occurrence of congenital urinary obstruction in neonatal ruminants fromJanuary 2005 to November 2014. Occurrence of congenital urinary obstruction inneonatal calves was also studied in respect to age, sex, breed and season. During theperiod of 10 years, a total of 42 cases of congenital urinary obstruction were recorded,which constituted an incidence of 2.0%. In this study, maximum incidence was recordedin bovine is 38 (90%). Maximum number of cases (45%) of congenital urinaryobstruction in ruminants was recorded from March to June, July to October andNovember to February as 19 (45%), 9 (22%) and 14 (33%) respectively. Among affectedanimals, 31 were cross breed (74%) and 11 were local breed (26%). Number of affectedmales was 29 (69%) clearly ahead than affected female 13 (31%). In another study, tubecystostomy with infusion set was performed in eleven neonatal calves aged 1-6 days oldand observed for 1 month. Among 11 calves, 2 died due to severe infection andsepticemia and 2 calves needed repeated operation. Seven calves got uneventful recoveryand the cured animal showed satisfactory results. Overall successful rate was 63.6%. Theresults revealed that tube cystostomy seemed to be an effective method. In addition, thisstudy will help not only veterinarian to make them aware about the occurrence ofcongenital urinary obstruction but also to solve the problem by saving the life of neonatalcalves.

Background: Semen must be of good quality to achieve satisfactory conception rate in any artificial insemination (AI) programme. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the quality of frozen semen of Brahman bulls and compare the same semen derived from different sources. Methods: Fifteen frozen semen straws of Brahman bulls derived from 3 different sources (5 straws from each source) were evaluated with respect to volume, motility, concentration of spermatozoa and morphology of spermatozoa. Volume of semen was determined by micropipette, concentration was evaluated by haemocytometer technique, motility and progressive motility were evaluated by computer assisted sperm analyser (CASA), spermatozoa with normal acrosome, midpiece and tail were evaluated in formol-saline fixed semen and spermatozoa with normal head morphology were evaluated by Farley staining technique. Moreover, presence or absence of bacteria in semen was evaluated by Gram’s staining technique. Results: The overall semen volume, concentration, motile percentage, progressive motile percentage, percentage of spermatozoa with normal acrosome, midpiece and tail, and percentage of normal head morphology were 0.19±0.01 ml, 30.87±3.4x106/ml, 56.47±24.2 (%), 16.23±9.8 (%), 88.23±2.1 (%) and 95.1±1.6 (%), respectively. When compared, similar volume of semen (0.19 ml) was found in all frozen semen derived from different sources. The difference in percentage of motile spermatozoa between source B and C was significant (P0.05). The difference in percentage of motile spermatozoa, the percentage of progressive motile spermatozoa, the concentration of spermatozoa, normal acrosome, midpiece and tail, normal head morphology in semen between locally produced and foreign semen was not significant (P>0.05). All examined 15 semen samples were negative for presence of bacteria. Conclusions: Although the quality of frozen semen derived from Brahman bulls seems to be within normal limit, the post-AI conception rate should be determined to evaluate the fertilizing capacity of the used semen.

Background: To mitigate the increasing protein demand in Bangladesh, recently the government has started a program to inspire the farmers for rearing Brahman as a beef breed. But, it is necessary to assess the performance of frozen semen of Brahman bull and the other factors that affect the rate of conception after Artificial Insemination (AI) before widespread rearing in Bangladesh. Methods: Data on AI performance, different factors and rate of conception were collected from 150 inseminated cows and heifers of Sadar upazila, Mymensingh. The cows were inseminated by trained technician of Research Animal Farm of Department of Surgery and Obstetrics, BAU, Mymensingh. Results: The overall conception rate was 55.3%. The conception rate in Holstein Friesian cross (68.9%) and Sahiwal cross (66.7%) cows were relatively higher than that of Local (46%) cows. Upon increasing age the service required for conception was irregular. The conception rate with respect to different parities ranged from 47.0% to 58.7%. Cows received insemination at parity 1-2 showed highest conception rate (60.0%) and cows received insemination at parity 3-7 showed lowest conception rate (47.0%). There was no significant difference between them on conception rate. The conception rate was observed higher (69.2%) in the cows which were inseminated in spring than cows were inseminated in summer (57.3%), winter (53.3%) and rainy (38.5%). The pregnancy rate in cows having BCS 2.5-3 was higher (60.7%) than that of 2.0 and 3.5-4.0. However, the difference in conception rate did not vary significantly among different BCS of cows (p>0.05). The study aim was to estimate gestational age (GA), expected parturition date (EPD) and growth rate by determining fetal trunk diameter (TD). Effects of fetal-dam pelvis alignment and in utero fetal position at time of ultrasonography (UG) on fetal numbers and sex determination were also studied. Trans-abdominal UG (3–6.5 MHz) was conducted on 37 ewes with known breeding dates from Days 25–120 of pregnancy. Errors in GA and EPD were studied using an equation in the same ewes at their successive breeding when date of breeding was unknown. Objective: To establish ultrasound guided testicular fine needle aspiration (TFNA) as well as to assess the effectiveness of uni-directional (UD) and multi-directional (MD) TFNA in buck according to testicular cells, echotexture and gross changes of testicle, age of buck was considered. Methods: A total of 120 samples were collected with both directions (UD, n=60) and (MD, n=60) suction from testis of 10 apparently healthy bucks. All slides were stained with May-Grunwald-Giemsa and examined under light microscope with 1 000 × magnifications to count spermatogenic cells, spermatozoa and sertoli cells. The percentage of spermatozoa and sertoli cells were expressed as spermatic index and sertoli cell index. Results: Results revealed no difference in the presence of various spermatogenic and sertoli cells in cell cluster of slides made either unidirectional TFNA or multidirectional TFNA. Early spermatids were the most numerous, followed by late spermatids, primary spermatocytes, spermatogonia. Sertoli cell index was higher in TFNA smears of young bucks prepared 7-13 mo of age and spermatic index was higher in adult bucks 14-24 mo of age. No echogenic change was observed in the echotexture of testisafter TFNA. Conclusions: It seems that TFNA has no serious ill effect on the buck testis when uni-direction aspiration is performed. Moreover, the possibility to standardize this method might provide a greater impulse to the clinical diagnostics of male animal infertility.

The study was conducted to evaluate the factors affecting the rates of pregnancy, calving and peri-parturient disorders in heifers in selected char areas (low lying flood and erosion-prone areas in or adjacent to major rivers) of Lalmonirhat district of Bangladesh. A total of 101 artificial inseminated (AI) heifers were randomly selected for monitoring rates of pregnancy, calving and peri-parturient disorders with respect to breed of semen, source of semen, breed, age, body weight and body condition score (BCS) of heifers. The overall rates of pregnancy, calving and peri-parturient disorder were 51.5%, 45.5% and 32.6%, respectively. Objective: This study aimed to salvage the study population from the fatality that occurs due to iatrogenic injury to the thoracic cavitys pleural membrane. Materials and Methods: An experimental study of temporomandibular joint arthroplasty with costochondral graft was carried out on 72 healthy Oryctolagus cuniculus species of male rab¬bits. The rabbits were distributed into two age groups: growing (34 months) and adult (1218 months). All the procedures were carried out under general anesthesia with xylazine hydrochlo-ride and ketamine hydrochloride after calculating the doses, maintained by halothane and O2 inhalations. Out of 72 rabbits, 33 rabbits had accidental perforation of the pleural membrane observed that required a chest drain. Results: In this study, 21 (63.64%) rabbits received chest drain and salvaged. The rest of the rab¬bits (n = 12; 36.36%) that did not receive any chest drain and died. Most of the rabbits (n = 17; 81%) were under the growing group, weighing less than 2 kg and four (19%) were adult rabbits. Conclusion: This manual chest drain is life-saving for rabbits. It is a new addition to the advance¬ment of thoracic surgery on animals. It is cost-effective and safe. The objectives were to investigate the factors (age, sex, breed and season) affecting the occurrence of calf diseases. In this study 497 cases of 0 to 3 months of age from three different farms were investigated. Calf in Savar Dairy farm (n=249), Talbag Dairy Farm (n=85) and BAU Dairy Farm (n=163) were included from April 2011 to March 2012. The occurrence of diseases were classified on the basis of breed (Local and Cross), age (? 3 weeks and >3 weeks), sex (Male and Female) and season (Spring, Summer, Rainy and Winter). The overall diseases were diarrhoea (20.3%), anorexia (9.7%), fever (9.1%), naval ill (8.0%), malnutrition (7.7%), indigestion (6.7%), traumatic injury (5.4%), dysentery (5.0%), myiasis (4.6%), pneumonia (3.4%), alopecia (3.4%), atresia ani (3.2%), hernia (2.8%), constipation (2.6%), abscess (2.2%), conjunctivitis (2.2%), lameness (1.8%), FMD (1.2%) and blot (0.6%). The cases of diarrhoea was higher (20.5%) than that of other diseases. The occurrence of diseases was highly significant (p0.05).
