Resumo: a physalis (Physalis peruviana L.) é uma solanácea de grande valor nutricional e econômico que aos poucos está sendo incorporada ao cultivo de pequenas frutas de sabor exótico no Brasil. Para melhorar o desenvolvimento da planta e aumentar a produtividade e foram testados três sistemas de tutoramento (em “X”, “Y” e “V”) além da testemunha qualidade dos frutos, utilizam-se algumas práticas de manejo, tais como tutoramento e podas. Neste trabalho (livre desenvolvimento). O objetivo foi avaliar o sistema de tutoramento mais adequados para o desenvolvimento vegetativo (medido através do plastocrono), produtividade (através de determinações de massa dos frutos com e sem cálice e diâmetro dos frutos) e qualidade de frutos (através do pH, acidez, sólidos solúveis, firmeza de polpa e colorimetria). Para determinações do desenvolvimento foi instalado um experimento de campo no setor de Horticultura da UFSM, região central do Rio Grande do Sul. As determinações de produtividade e qualidade foram realizadas a partir dos frutos produzidos neste experimento. O plastocrono é afetado pelo número de hastes mantidas na planta, sendo maior no tutoramento em X. Para maiores produtividades recomenda-se o tutoramento em X e para melhor qualidade de frutos o tutoramento em Y.

Vernalization, natural or artificial, is a physiological requirement of some plants to meet the need for low temperatures for its complete development to occur. The objective of this article is to describe a protocol of transforming a domestic refrigerator into a BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) prototype aimed at vernalizing propagating materials statice crop. The first step is to install a temperature controller to maintain a constant temperature inside the refrigerator (10 °C). Thinking of seedling vernalization, it is still necessary to install a system of lights inside the refrigerator. The control of the time that the lights remain on inside the prototype is carried out by installing a Timer adjusted so that the lights remained on, uninterruptedly, for 10 hours. To test the effective ness of the prototype, an on-farm experiment was carried out with the statice (Limonium sinuatum L.) crop at 5 locations in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The seedlings were vernalized at an internal temperature of 10 °C and photoperiod of 10 hours for 3 weeks. The duration of this experiment was 8 months and at the end of this observed that statice plants were correctly vernalized because the plants emitted flower stems and showed satisfactory development throughout the growing cycle. Therefore, that the adaptation of a domestic refrigerator as a BOD economically viable and easy mounting prototype is possible. Being an excellent alternative to small producers. Resumo A vernalização, natural ou artificial, é uma exigência fisiológica de algumas espécies para suprir a necessidade por baixas temperaturas para que ocorra o seu completo desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever um protocolo da transformação de uma geladeira doméstica em um protótipo de BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) visando à vernalização de materiais propagativos da cultura da estatice. O primeiro passo consiste na instalação de um controlador de temperatura para que se mantenha uma temperatura constante no interior da geladeira (neste caso 10 °C). Pensando em vernalização de mudas, ainda é necessário à instalação de um sistema de luzes no interior da geladeira. O controle de tempo em que as luzes permanecem acesas no interior do protótipo é realizado através da instalação de um Timer ajustado para que as luzes permaneçam ligadas, ininterruptamente, por 10 horas. Para testar a eficácia do protótipo foi realizado um experimento on farm com a cultura da estatice (Limonium sinuatum L.) em 5 locais no Rio Grande do Sul. As mudas foram vernalizadas à temperatura interna de 10 °C e fotoperíodo de 10 horas durante 3 semanas. A duração deste experimento foi de 8 meses e ao fim deste observou-se que as plantas de estatice foram corretamente vernalizadas, pois as plantas emitiram hastes florais e apresentaram desenvolvimento satisfatório ao longo do ciclo. Portanto, a adaptação de uma geladeira doméstica em um protótipo de BOD de forma economicamente viável e de fácil montagem é possível. Sendo uma excelente alternativa à pequenos produtores.

Gladiolus (Gladiolus x grandiflorus Hort.), also called as Palma-de-Santa-Rita, is culturally known in Brazil as the All Soul's' Day flower. In recent years, it has also become popular in other special dates due to its robustness, liveliness, and magnificence. However, there are challenges regarding the cut flower production, since the largest producer investment is the corm acquisition. Due to the insufficiency of technical information, there are no fully established corm production protocols for gladiolus. Therefore, this technical article has the objective of bringing information related to the gladiolus corms production technique, in view of the sustainability of the production.

This study aimed to obtain equations to estimate leaf area from linear leaf dimensions and establish the allometric relationship between leaf area and the number of leaves on the main stem of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) at different sowing times. The experiment was conducted in the agricultural year 2016/2017 on five sowing times in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, in a randomized block design with four repetitions. In each plot, ten random plants were marked weekly during the vegetative phase to determine the number of leaves (NL) in the main stem, and three of these for the determination of leaf area (LA). A total of 70 leaves of different sizes were used to calibrate the model. Another 106 leaves were used to test the predictive capacity of the equations by various statistical indices. The length (L) and the largest leaf width (W) were measured. Leaf collection was carried out during the cycle, in all sowing times to represent all leaf sizes. The linear, quadratic, exponential, and potential models were adjusted. The non-destructive method, through the linear dimensions of the leaf, is appropriate for estimating the leaf area in chia. The general equation LA = 0.642 (L x W) can be used to estimate the leaf area of the chia plants without loss of precision. The potential model is appropriate to characterize the allometric relationship between leaf area evolution and the number of leaves accumulated in the main stem of chia at different sowing times. RESUMO Objetivou-se neste estudo obter equações para estimar a área foliar a partir de dimensões lineares da folha e estabelecer a relação alométrica entre a área foliar e o número de folhas da haste principal de chia (Salvia hispanica L.) em diferentes épocas de semeadura. O experimento foi conduzido no ano agrícola 2016/2017 em cinco épocas de semeadura em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Em cada parcela, dez plantas ao acaso foram marcadas para determinação semanal do número de folhas (NF) na haste principal durante a fase vegetativa, e três para determinação da área foliar (AF). Um total de 70 folhas de diferentes tamanhos foram usadas para calibrar o modelo e outras 106 folhas foram usadas para testar a capacidade preditiva das equações por vários índices estatísticos, nas quais foram medidos o comprimento (C) e a maior largura da folha (L). A coleta de folhas foi realizada durante o ciclo de desenvolvimento de todas as épocas de semeadura para ter representação de todos os tamanhos de folhas. Os modelos linear, quadrático, exponencial e potencial foram ajustados. O método não destrutivo, através das dimensões lineares da folha, é adequado para estimar a área foliar em chia. A equação geral AF = 0.642 (L x W) pode ser usada para estimar a área foliar das plantas de chia sem perda de precisão. O modelo potencial é adequado para caracterizar a relação alométrica entre a evolução da área foliar e o número de folhas acumuladas na haste principal de chia em diferentes épocas de semeadura.

RESUMO O gladíolo é uma flor de corte de grande importância nos mercados nacional e mundial. A haste floral, do tipo espiga, é composta por floretes que apresentam abertura acropetal. O conhecimento da velocidade de abertura desses floretes, representada pelo antocrono, pode auxiliar no planejamento das atividades de colheita e comercialização. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: estimar a temperatura base para abertura de floretes em gladíolo e determinar o antocrono, com a unidade de tempo representada pela soma térmica. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos de campo, em Santa Maria, RS, durante dois anos (2011 a 2013), sendo cada experimento composto por 12 datas de plantio e três cultivares. A soma térmica diária (STd) foi calculada pela diferença entre a temperatura média e a temperatura base (Tb) e, a soma térmica acumulada, pelo somatório das STd. Para a estimativa Tb para abertura de floretes, utilizaram-se os dados do número de floretes abertos (NFA), coletados nos experimentos. Conclui-se que Tb para abertura de floretes em gladíolo é 6 ºC e que o antocrono é, em média, 14,7 ºC dia por florete, mas varia com a disponibilidade de radiação solar durante o florescimento da espiga. ABSTRACT Gladiolus is an important cut flower in national and international markets. The floral stem, a kind of spike, is composed of florets that have acropetal opening. Knowledge on the opening speed of florets, represented by the anthochron, can assist in planning harvesting and marketing activities. The objectives of this study were to estimate the base temperature for floret opening in gladiolus and to determine the anthochron, with the time unit represented by the thermal time. Two field experiments were conducted in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, for two years (2011-2013), each experiment composed of 12 planting dates and three cultivars. The daily thermal time (STd) was calculated as the difference between the daily mean temperature and the base temperature (Tb) and the accumulated thermal time was obtained by the sum of STd. To estimate the Tb for floret opening, we used the number of open florets (NFA) collected in the experiments. We concluded that the Tb for floret opening in gladiolus is 6 °C and for the anthochron is, on average, 14.7 ºC day per floret, but the anthochron Tb varies according to solar radiation during spike flowering period.

In recent years, consumers have shown interest in the ornamental use of some fruits that were previously used mainly for food purposes. However, the use of ‘mini-pumpkins’ for ornamentation can be limited by post-harvest aspects, such as skin depigmentation, fresh mass losses, ethylene production and respiration, which compromise the visual quality of the product, resulting in the loss of its ornamental value. The objective was to evaluate the effect of films application (control, carnauba wax, cassava starch and corn starch) in post-harvest of ornamental mini-pumpkins, aiming the shelf life prolongation (experiment 1) and reduction of ethylene production and respiration (experiment 2). The results obtained in experiment 1 pointed to lower mass loss and maintenance of the ornamental mini-pumpkins epidermis color with the application of carnauba wax film. In experiment 2, the application of carnauba wax and the ethylene action inhibitor (1-MCP) did not and respiration production of mini-pumpkins, suggesting that ethylene is not involved in the modifications that occur in the product during the time of exposure to the environment. Resumo Nos últimos anos, o mercado consumidor tem mostrado interesse no uso ornamental de alguns frutos que anteriormente eram empregados principalmente para fins alimentares. No entanto, o uso das chamadas ‘mini-abóboras’ para ornamentação pode ser limitado por aspectos ligados à pós-colheita, como despigmentação da casca, perda de massa fresca, produção de etileno e respiração dos tecidos, que comprometem a qualidade visual do produto, resultando na perda de seu valor ornamental. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da aplicação de películas (testemunha, cera de carnaúba, fécula de mandioca e amido de milho) em pós-colheita de mini-abóboras ornamentais no prolongamento da vida de prateleira, através da conservação dos pigmentos da casca, manutenção da massa (experimento 1) e redução da produção de etileno e respiração (experimento 2). Os resultados obtidos no experimento 1 apontaram para menor perda de massa e manutenção da cor da epiderme de mini-abóboras ornamentais com a aplicação de película de cera de carnaúba. No experimento 2, a aplicação de cera de carnaúba e o inibidor da ação do etileno (1-MCP) não afetaram a produção de etileno e respiração das mini-abóboras, sugerindo que o etileno não está envolvido nas modificações que ocorrem no produto durante o tempo de exposição ao ambiente.

Crop simulation models are important tools to help farmers in planning management practices and flowering time of cut flowers, like Gladiolus ( Gladiolus x grandiflorus Hort.). The objective of this study was to develop a robust Gladiolus phenology model, named PhenoGlad, for field applications. The model describes the timing of developmental stages, including harvest point, the vase life of Gladiolus spikes and the low (chilling) and high (heat) temperature effects on spike quality. The Gladiolus developmental model simulates on a daily basis the cumulative leaf number and the phenology using a non-linear temperature response function and genotype-specific coefficients considering three main phases: corms sprouting phase, vegetative phase, and reproductive phase. Data from nine field experiments conducted during five years (2011–2015) in three locations across the Rio Grande do Sul State and in one location in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, were used. These cultivar x planting dates x years x locations experiments provided a rich data set for parameterizing and evaluating the Gladiolus model. The PhenoGlad model accurately simulated the dynamics of leaf development, final leaf number and the timing of developmental stages among cultivars, planting dates, years and locations, with an overall RMSE of 0.5 leaves for leaf development and final leaf number, 6.5 days for the date of reproductive developmental stages, and 1.3 days for simulating the vase life of harvested spikes. PhenoGlad was also accurate in predicting the effects of chilling and high temperatures damage on florets.

A staging system for development of gladiola (Gladiolus × grandiflorus) that relies on simple, visual, non-destructive criteria is proposed. Four field trials were conducted during the spring 2010, autumn/winter 2011 and winter 2011 at Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, with different gladiola cultivars, in order to observe the developmental stages of the above-ground parts and their dry matter. The developmental cycle, which starts at dormant corm and ends with plant senescence, is divided into four developmental phases: dormancy phase, sprouting phase (from filiform roots appearance to sheaths appearance), vegetative phase (from emergence of the first leaf tip to emergence of the final leaf tip on the stem) and reproductive phase (from heading to plant senescence). The developmental stages that were identified during the dormancy phase and during the sprouting phases are coded as S stages: S0 = dormant corm, S1 = appearance of roots, S2.1 = first sheath, S2.2 = second sheath and S2.3 = third sheath. Vegetative phase is coded as V stages: VE = emergence of the sheaths above ground, V1 = first leaf, V2 = second leaf, Vn = nth leaf and VF = flag leaf. Leaf tip is the marker for V1–VF. The developmental stages during the reproductive phases are coded as R stages: R1 = heading, R2 = blooming, R3 = onset of flowering, R4 = end of anthesis, R5 = end of florets senescence and R6 = plant senescence (leaves and floret axis are brown). Sub-stages have also been assigned between R1 and R2 and between R3 and R4. Illustrations (photographs) of each developmental stage taken from field pot-grown plants are provided and the proposed scale was tested with field observations. These criteria are straight forward and allow for quick determination of development stage. This system can be used by both farmers and for experimental trials.

A arborização urbana constitui um elemento de fundamental importância para a obtenção de uma elevada qualidade de vida da população. No entanto, poucas cidades brasileiras possuem um planejamento para as suas vias públicas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar qualitativa e quantitativamente a arborização de espécies arbóreas e arbustivas em doze avenidas de Santa Maria, RS. O inventário foi realizado de janeiro a abril de 2010. Foi amostrada uma população de 2.465 exemplares arbóreos, pertencentes a 95 espécies distribuídos em 30 famílias e a presença de 497 exemplares arbustivos, pertencentes a 34 espécies e a 19 famílias botânicas. De maneira geral, as espécies arbóreas de maior frequência foram Syagrus romanzoffiana (17,77%), Ligustrum lucidum (10,67%), Jacaranda mimosifolia (9,41%), Tipuana tipu (7,63%) e arbustivas foram Duranta erecta (30,18%) e Yucca guatemalensis (18,71%). A maioria das plantas encontra-se em estado geral bom e regular (38%), com copa normal e deformada (34%) e ausência de danos à calçada (84%) e à fiação (85%). Pela análise da vegetação observou-se que há uma deficiência no planejamento da arborização deste município e que as avenidas necessitam de revitalização, de adequação das espécies e substituição gradativa levando-se em consideração critérios de porte e necessidades de seu uso no contexto urbano.

A arborização urbana traz diversos benefícios às cidades, tais como melhoria do microclima, embelezamento, redução da poluição sonora e visual além da melhoria física e mental dos habitantes. Porém a inserção de algumas plantas no meio urbano pode trazer malefícios, principalmente quando estas forem providas de princípios tóxicos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar as espécies vegetais potencialmente nocivas distribuídas nas praças, ruas e avenidas do bairro Centro da cidade de Santiago/RS. Para isso foi realizado um levantamento das espécies arbóreas através de visitas in loco, identificando-as individualmente, no período de dezembro de 2007 a fevereiro de 2008. As espécies foram identificadas de acordo com o sistema de classificação APG III e, posteriormente, calculouse a freqüência de ocorrência de cada espécie. A pesquisa demonstrou a predominância de Ligustrum lucidum Ait. e Melia azedarach L. entre as espécies tóxicas relatadas.

Plant vegetative development has been widely described using the phyllochron concept, but little effort has been made to describe flower development during the reproductive phase. The objective of this work was to present the anthochron, through a review of the literature, as a building block of flower development, mainly during the flower opening phase. The anthochron is the time interval needed for two subsequent flowers to achieve the same developmental stage, with units of time in days or in ºC day per flower. The concept of anthochron fulfills part of the lack of studies on flower development, since it is considered a building block of the flower opening process. The anthochron can be measured from field experiments or estimated by a simple linear regression analysis. So far, the anthochron has only been quantified in Gladiolus x grandiflorus Hort. Therefore, factors affecting the anthochron still need to be determined in order to pinpoint their effect on the flower opening rate. Resumo: O desenvolvimento vegetativo de plantas tem sido amplamente descrito com o uso do conceito de filocrono, mas pouco esforço tem sido feito para descrever o desenvolvimento da flor durante sua fase reprodutiva. O objetivo deste trabalho foi apresentar, por meio de uma revisão da literatura, o antocrono como unidade básica do desenvolvimento da flor, especialmente durante a fase de abertura de flores. O antocrono é o intervalo de tempo necessário para duas flores subsequentes atingirem o mesmo estágio de desenvolvimento, com unidades de tempo em dias ou em ºC dia por flor. O conceito do antocrono preenche parte da falta de estudos sobre o desenvolvimento da flor, uma vez que é a unidade básica do processo de abertura floral. O antocrono pode ser medido a partir de experimentos em campo ou estimado por análise de regressão linear simples. Até o momento, o antocrono foi quantificado apenas em Gladiolus x grandiflorus Hort. Portanto, os fatores que afetam o antocrono ainda precisam ser determinados para identificar o seu efeito na taxa de abertura floral.

Resumo:O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as épocas de cultivo, em ambiente subtropical, em que é possível produzir hastes de gladíolo (Gladiolusx grandiflorus) que atendam aos padrões comerciais quantitativos do mercado nacional de flores de corte. Dois experimentos de campo foram realizados, um de agosto de 2011 a julho de 2012 e outro de agosto de 2012 a julho de 2013, com três cultivares do gladíolo e 12 datas de plantio para cada experimento. O comprimento total da haste, o comprimento do pendão e o diâmetro da haste foram avaliados quando as hastes estavam em ponto de colheita, ou seja, quando a cor das pétalas apareceu nos três primeiros floretes na base da haste. Os melhores meses para a produção de hastes de gladíolo são julho, agosto, setembro, fevereiro, março e abril, embora em nenhuma das datas de plantio tenham sido produzidas hastes com parâmetros quantitativos abaixo do padrão mínimo (exceto em períodos com geada, durante o espigamento). Abstract:The objective of this work was to determine the growing seasons, in a subtropical environment, when it is possible to produce gladiolus (Gladiolus x grandiflorus) stems that meet commercial, quantitative standards for cut flowers of the national market. Two field experiments were carried out - one from August 2011 to July 2012, and the other from August 2012 to July 2013 - with three gladiolus cultivars and 12 planting dates for each experiment. Stem total length, rachis length, and stem diameter were evaluated at the harvesting point, when the petal color appears in the first three florets at the stem base. The best months for production of gladiolus stems are July, August, September, February, March, and April, although in the other planting dates the stem quality was never below the minimum standard (except for the periods of frost during heading).
