The Snake River Plain (SRP) volcanic province overlies the track of the Yellowstone hotspot, a thermal anomaly that extends deep into the mantle. Most of the area is underlain by a basaltic volcanic province that overlies a mid-crustal intrusive complex, which in turn provides the long-term heat flux needed to sustain geothermal systems. Previous studies have identified several known geothermal resource areas within the SRP. For the geothermal study presented herein, our goals were to: (1) adapt the methodology of Play Fairway Analysis (PFA) for geothermal exploration to create a formal basis for its application to geothermal systems, (2) assemble relevant data for the SRP from publicly available and private sources, and (3) build a geothermal PFA model for the SRP and identify the most promising plays, using GIS-based software tools that are standard in the petroleum industry. The study focused on identifying three critical resource parameters for exploitable hydrothermal systems in the SRP: heat source, reservoir and recharge permeability, and cap or seal. Data included in the compilation for heat source were heat flow, distribution and ages of volcanic vents, groundwater temperatures, thermal springs and wells, helium isotope anomalies, and reservoir temperatures estimated using geothermometry. Reservoir and recharge permeability was inferred from the analysis of stress orientations and magnitudes, post-Miocene faults, and subsurface structural lineaments based on magnetics and gravity data. Data for cap or seal included the distribution of impermeable lake sediments and clay-seal associated with hydrothermal alteration below the regional aquifer. These data were used to compile Common Risk Segment maps for heat, permeability, and seal, which were combined to create a Composite Common Risk Segment map for all southern Idaho that reflects the risk associated with geothermal resource exploration and identifies favorable resource tracks. Our regional assessment indicated that undiscovered geothermal resources may be located in several areas of the SRP. Two of these areas, the western SRP and Camas Prairie, were selected for more detailed assessment, during which heat, permeability, and seal were evaluated using newly collected field data and smaller grid parameters to refine the location of potential resources. These higher resolution assessments illustrate the flexibility of our approach over a range of scales.

Analysis of PRISM and SNOTEL station data paired with USGS streamflow gage data in the western United States shows that, in snow‐dominated mountainous watersheds, streamflow regimes differ between watersheds with karst geology and their non‐karst neighbours. These carbonate aquifers exhibit a spectrum of flow paths encompassing karst conduits, including large fractures or voids that transmit water readily to springs and other surface waters, and matrix flow paths through soils, highly fractured bedrock, or porous media bedrock grains. A well‐connected karst aquifer will discharge a large portion of its accumulated precipitation to surface water via springs and other groundwater flow paths on an annual scale, exhibiting a lagged response to precipitation presenting as a "memory effect" in hydrograph time series. These patterns were observed in the hydrologic records of gaged watersheds with exposed or near‐surface carbonate layers accounting for > 30% of their drainage area. In western snow‐dominated watersheds, where paired streamflow and SNOTEL data are available, analysis of the precipitation and flow time series shows low‐flow volume is strongly related to karst aquifer conditions and winter precipitation when compared to low‐flow volumes present in non‐karst watersheds, which have a complex relationship to multiple driving metrics. Analysis of normalised streamflow and cumulative precipitation in karst watersheds show that low‐flow conditions are highly dependent on the preceding winter precipitation and streamflow in both wet and dry periods. In non‐karst watersheds, increased precipitation primarily impacts high‐flow, spring runoff volumes with no clear relationship to low‐flow periods. When comparing cumulative streamflow and precipitation volumes within each water year and over longer timescales, karst watersheds show the potential filling and draining of large amounts of karst storage, whereas non‐karst watersheds demonstrate a more stable storage regime. Communities in many western US watersheds are dependent on snow‐dominated karst watersheds for their water supply. This analysis, using widely available hydrologic data, can provide insight into the recharge and storage processes within these watersheds, improve our ability to assess current flow regimes, anticipate the impacts of climate change on water availability, and help manage water supplies. In many regions globally, snowmelt‐recharged mountainous karst aquifers serve as crucial sources for municipal and agricultural water supplies. In these watersheds, complex interplay of meteorological, topographical, and hydrogeological factors leads to intricate recharge‐discharge pathways. This study introduces a spatially distributed deep learning precipitation‐runoff model that combines Convolutional Long Short‐Term Memory (ConvLSTM) with a spatial attention mechanism. The effectiveness of the deep learning model was evaluated using data from the Logan River watershed and subwatersheds, a characteristically karst‐dominated hydrological system in northern Utah. Compared to the ConvLSTM baseline, the inclusion of a spatial attention mechanism improved performance for simulating discharge at the watershed outlet. Analysis of attention weights in the trained model unveiled distinct areas contributing the most to discharge under snowmelt and recession conditions. Furthermore, fine‐tuning the model at subwatershed scales provided insights into cross‐subwatershed subsurface connectivity. These findings align with results obtained from detailed hydrogeochemical tracer studies. Results highlight the potential of the proposed deep learning approach to unravel the complexities of karst aquifer systems, offering valuable insights for water resource management under future climate conditions. Furthermore, results suggest that the proposed explainable, spatially distributed, deep learning approach to hydrologic modeling holds promise for non‐karstic watersheds. Non‐marine carbonates at Lakeside (Utah) are the depositional record of transitional shoreline palaeoenvironments around 1,285 m, as lake elevation fell from Lake Bonneville levels to low‐stand Great Salt Lake levels of 1,284–1,278 m. Lakeside carbonates provide a rare example of onshore groundwater spring deposits connected to lacustrine microbialite reefs. Clotted fabrics and mineralized bacteriomorphs suggest microbial influence both in groundwater spring and littoral carbonates. Thrombolitic clotted aragonite and dendritic clotted intermediate magnesium calcite may document two distinct microbial ecosystems each with a specific mineralogy. Radiocarbon dates from interior to outer layers of a 20 cm littoral microbialite suggest several thousand years of domal growth. Climate fluctuations may be recorded in littoral deposits by the alternation of ooids (increased salinity, arid conditions) with ostracods (fresher water, humid conditions). Successive higher frequency cycles of sedimentation, exposure, microkarst and early diagenesis were cemented by vadose and phreatic very high magnesium calcite and non‐stoichiometric dolomite. Several layers of littoral and beach deposits accumulated during longer lacustrine transgressive–regressive cycles. Clastic detritus and lack of known initial U and Th concentrations could explain the lack of correlation between widely scattered U‐Th ages and closely grouped 14C dates. Calibrated ages from radiocarbon dating may have been increased by long residence time of groundwater in bedrock, since 87Sr/86Sr signatures do indicate possible littoral‐zone mixing of lake water with groundwater from outcropping and subsurface Mississippian Great Blue Limestone. The Hurricane Fault is a ~250-km-long, west-dipping normal fault located along the transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range tectonic provinces in the western U.S. Extensive evidence of fluid-fault interaction, including calcite mineralization and veining, occur in the footwall damage zone. Calcite vein carbon (δ13CVPDB) and oxygen (δ18OVPDB) stable isotope ratios range from -4.5 to 3.8 ‰ and -22.1 to -1.1 ‰, respectively. Fluid inclusion microthermometry constrain paleofluid temperatures and salinities from 45-160 °C and 1.4-11.0 wt % as NaCl, respectively. These data identify mixing between two primary fluid sources including infiltrating meteoric groundwater (70 ± 10 °C, ~1.5 wt % NaCl, δ18OSMOW ~-10 ‰) and sedimentary brine (100 ± 25 °C, ~11 wt % NaCl, δ18OSMOW ~5 ‰). Interpreted carbon sources include crustal- or magmatic-derived CO2, carbonate bedrock, and hydrocarbons. U-Th dates from 5 calcite vein samples indicates punctuated fluid-flow and fracture healing at 539 ± 10.8, 287.9 ± 5.8, 86.2 ± 1.7, and 86.0 ± 0.2 ka in the upper 300 m of the crust. Collectively, the data imply that the Hurricane Fault imparts a strong influence on regional flow of crustal fluids, and that the formation of veins in the shallow parts of the fault damage zone has important implications for the evolution of fault strength and permeability. The Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash contain some of the highest topography in the Andes and provide insight into tectonomagmatic processes associated with the onset of flat-slab subduction. These adjacent ranges shared a similar history of deformation and exhumation prior to the late Miocene, when synconvergent extension began in the Cordillera Blanca. Magmatism in the Cordillera Huayhuash has been inferred as coeval with magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca. Yet, extension, which has been correlated with magmatic heat flow, is limited to the Cordillera Blanca. New zircon U-Pb dates and trace and rare earth element concentrations from the Cordillera Blanca batholith and the Huayllapa pluton in the Cordillera Huayhuash and reassessment of existing zircon data help to characterize regional magmatic processes prior to the establishment of flat-slab subduction. Two compositionally distinct samples of the Huayllapa pluton yielded mean ages of 24.8 ± 0.4 Ma and 25.4 ± 0.8 Ma. In contrast, the Cordillera Blanca batholith has a protracted crystallization history postdating that of the Cordillera Huayhuash by up to 20 m.y. Miocene magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca began at 19 Ma and ended with injection of large volumes of geochemically distinct, mantle-derived magma from 10 to 5 Ma. We suggest that 6–5 Ma magmatism in the Cordillera Blanca promoted elevated heat flow and reduced shear strength, which facilitated extensional shearing along the western slopes of the range, whereas colder amagmatic crust in the Cordillera Huayhuash inhibited southward propagation of faulting. Our data demonstrate that the linkages between magmatism and elevated heat flow identified in the Cordillera Blanca are important driving processes in initiating extension in cordilleran-style orogenies. The Cordillera Blanca detachment in the highest elevations of the Peruvian Andes has been accommodating synconvergent extension since the late Miocene. Stable isotope analysis of synkinematic mica from its exhumed footwall shear zone provides new constraints on deep meteoric-hydrothermal circulation during ductile deformation and regional paleoelevation. Muscovite and biotite that deformed and/or grew synkinematically in the shear zone have δ2H values of -131‰ to -58‰ and -149‰ to -98‰ (versus Vienna standard mean ocean water, VSMOW), respectively. The δ2H value difference between coexisting muscovite and biotite is consistent with equilibrium fractionation of the same fluid at the same temperature. Calculated δ2H values of water (-107‰ to -78‰) in equilibrium with these micas are indistinguishable from those of present-day, deeply circulated (9-11 km) hot spring waters emanating from the fault. Such low-δ2H fluids indicate circulation of meteoric water to the depths of the brittle-ductile transition that cannot be explained by other mechanisms. Average recharge paleoelevation for water entering the shear zone based on hydrogen isotopes was 3400 + 500/-700 m (1σ). This is near, but ~500 m below, the present-day mean elevation of the catchments feeding modern hot springs of 3965 ± 880 m, and ~700 m below the 4200 + 700/-900 m mean recharge elevation derived from δ2H values of modern surface and thermal water. The consistency between modern and ancient fault-assisted hydrothermal systems and elevation suggests that high topography, steep relief, and meteoric-hydrothermal circulation have persisted throughout the history of the Cordillera Blanca detachment system.
