However, this is not always achievable with clinical therapies constantly evolving, resulting in a domino effect of structural, policy and training changes. For low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), implementing change is restricted. It is essential that innovative and realistic solutions are developed, so that effective change can be realised in LMICs.Materials and Methods: In this report of a global health conference held in July 2019, six perspectives are presented which aim to generate long-term positive change in Malaŵi. Perspective 1: Pneumonia – the BIOTOPE study (BIOmarkers TO diagnose PnEumonia) sought to determine the aetiology of pneumonia in children presenting in primary care. It assessed blood-based markers of bacterial infection as part of a rapid diagnostic approach to better utilise existing resources in Malaŵi. Perspective 2: Cardiovascular – the CARDIA project (CARdiac Dysfunction in Africa) was established to assess clinical and biochemical phenotypes of diabetic patients in Malaŵi. Perspective 3: Asthma – an observational study was conducted to implement a health system strengthening initiative for asthma. The use of locally adapted formularies and protocols with ongoing online mentoring through expert partnerships provided an opportunity to sustainably build capacity. Perspective 4: Sustainable Partnerships – establishing the Malaŵi electronic Health (eHealth) Research Centre, an international hub to develop education, research and innovation for long-term collaboration. Perspective 5: Part-Time PhD Studies – undertaking a part-time PhD within a LMIC provides logistic challenges, but also a number of opportunities for observational research. Perspective 6: Medical electives – an undergraduate elective allows real exposure to global health and facilitates life-long collaborations at an early stage in a medical career.Conclusion: Malaŵi is an under-doctored and resource-poor country. Abstract

JWST NIRSpec IFU (2.9-5.3 mu) and MIRI MRS (4.9-28.5 mu) observations were performed on both the leading and trailing hemispheres of Ganymede with a spectral resolution of ~2700. Reflectance spectra show signatures of water ice, CO2 and H2O2. An absorption feature at 5.9 mu is revealed and is tentatively assigned to sulfuric acid hydrates. The CO2 4.26-mu band shows latitudinal and longitudinal variations in depth, shape and position over the two hemispheres, unveiling different CO2 physical states. In the ice-rich polar regions, which are the most exposed to Jupiter's plasma irradiation, the CO2 band is redshifted with respect to other terrains. In the leading northern polar cap, the CO2 band is dominated by a high wavelength component at ~4.27 mu, consistent with CO2 trapped in amorphous water ice. At equatorial latitudes (and especially on dark terrains) the observed band is broader and shifted towards the blue, suggesting CO2 adsorbed on non-icy materials. Amorphous ice is detected in the ice-rich polar regions, and is especially abundant on the leading northern polar cap. In both hemispheres the north polar cap ice appears to be more processed than the south polar cap. A longitudinal modification of the H2O ice molecular structure and/or nano/micrometre-scale texture, of diurnal or geographic origin, is observed in both hemispheres. Ice frost is observed on the morning limb of the trailing hemisphere, possibly formed during the night from the recondensation of water subliming from the warmer subsurface. Reflectance spectra of the dark terrains are compatible with the presence of Na-/Mg-sulfate salts, sulfuric acid hydrates, and possibly phyllosilicates mixed with fine-grained opaque minerals, having an highly porous texture. Mid-IR brightness temperatures indicate a rough surface and a very low thermal inertia of 20-40 J m-2 s-0.5 K-1, consistent with a porous surface., Comment: 35 pages, 34 figures

Abstract

A new line list for hydronium (H$_3$$^{16}$O$^+$) is computed. The line list is based on a new ab initio dipole moment surface (CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ) and a new empirical potential energy surface (PES). The empirical PES of H$_3$O$^+$ was obtained by refining an ab initio surface through a global fit to the experimentally determined ro-vibrational energies collected from the literature covering the ground, $\nu_1^{\pm}$, $\nu_2^{\pm}$, $2\nu_2^{\pm}$, $\nu_3^{\pm}$ and $\nu_4^{\pm}$ vibrational states. The line list covers the wavenumber range up to 10 000 cm$^{-1}$ (wavelengths $>1 \mu$m) and should be complete for temperatures up to $T=1500$ K. This is the first comprehensive line list for H$_3$O$^+$ with extensive wavenumber coverage and accurate transitional probabilities. Prospects of detection of hydronium in spectra of solar system giant planets as well as exoplanets are discussed. The eXeL line list is publicly available from the ExoMol and CDS databases.

5. Simplified Low-Cost LED Nephelometer and Turbidity Experiments for Practical Teaching

Abstract

This work describes the design and testing of a low-cost light-emitting diode (LED)-based nephelometer for turbidity analysis. It also describes the use of this nephelometer for context-based learning (CBL) experiments designed for teaching laboratories. The LED nephelometer is simple, low-cost, and robust, providing similar results as a commercial device. Data collection and analysis is quick and intuitive, allowing time and opportunity for discussion about the analytical process and the chemistry involved. The experiments described here are based on real-world applications to emphasize the usefulness of chemical analysis and quantification of turbidity in everyday life.

Since its discovery in the aurorae of Jupiter ~30 years ago, the H$_{3}^{+}$ ion has served as an invaluable probe of giant planet upper atmospheres. However, the vast majority of monitoring of planetary H$_{3}^{+}$ radiation has followed from observations that rely on deriving parameters from column-integrated paths through the emitting layer. Here, we investigate the effects of density and temperature gradients along such paths on the measured H$_{3}^{+}$ spectrum and its resulting interpretation. In a non-isothermal atmosphere, H$_{3}^{+}$ column densities retrieved from such observations are found to represent a lower limit, reduced by 20% or more from the true atmospheric value. Global simulations of Uranus' ionosphere reveal that measured H$_{3}^{+}$ temperature variations are often attributable to well-understood solar zenith angle effects rather than indications of real atmospheric variability. Finally, based on these insights, a preliminary method of deriving vertical temperature structure is demonstrated at Jupiter using model reproductions of electron density and H$_{3}^{+}$ measurements. Abstract

Emission from the molecular ion H$_3^+$ is a powerful diagnostic of the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, but it remains undetected at Neptune. In search of this emission, we present near-infrared spectral observations of Neptune between 3.93 and 4.00 $\mu$m taken with the newly commissioned iSHELL instrument on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii, obtained 17-20 August 2017. We spent 15.4 h integrating across the disk of the planet, yet were unable to unambiguously identify any H$_3^+$ line emissions. Assuming a temperature of 550 K, we derive an upper limit on the column integrated density of $1.0^{+1.2}_{-0.8}\times10^{13}$ m$^{-2}$, which is an improvement of 30\% on the best previous observational constraint. This result means that models are over-estimating the density by at least a factor of 5, highlighting the need for renewed modelling efforts. A potential solution is strong vertical mixing of polyatomic neutral species from Neptune's upper stratosphere to the thermosphere, reacting with H$_3^+$, thus greatly reducing the column integrated H$_3^+$ densities. 8. Stories from the Lab: Development and Feedback from an Online Education and Public Engagement Activity with Schools

Abstract

Face-to-face outreach activities with scientific researchers provide schools with tangible role models, real world context for the curriculum, and a unique shared experience for groups of students. Moving from face-to-face to online engagement at short notice represents a unique challenge for the continuation of many outreach activities. The development, logistics, and feedback for a new series of live virtual sessions between university-based researchers and secondary schools are described here. Stories from the Lab was developed and run with science teachers during the initial phase of the COVID-19 lockdown in Ireland. In addition to the benefits afforded to teachers and students, it also provided the researchers with suitable work experience and peer-learning as part of their structured Ph.D. program.

12. Simplified Low-Cost Colorimetry for Education and Public Engagement

Abstract

This work describes the design, building, and testing of miniature, low-cost LED-LDR colorimeters for absorption-spectrophotometry experiments. It also describes using these colorimeters for simplified context-based-learning (CBL) activities in school teaching laboratories and for public-engagement events. The colorimeters are simple and robust, performing well against a conventional benchtop UV-vis spectrophotometer. Data collection and analysis is quick and intuitive, allowing for efficient turnaround between groups and making it particularly useful at public-engagement events. The experiments and activities described here are based on real-life examples to emphasize the usefulness of chemical analysis and quantification in everyday life.

This thesis comprises a dissertation, ‘Two-Tone Detectives: Cross-Cultural Crime in Chester Himes’ Harlem Cycle Novels’; and Black Bush City Limits, a novel set amongst the ‘murphoisie’ of Irish London. The focus of the dissertation is an exploration of Himes’ expansion of the terms of the crime novel to countenance the broader theme of crimes against humanity, specifically slavery and its legacy in the United States of America following Emancipation in 1865. The dissertation argues that Himes takes a subaltern genre and by means of resisting the formulaic limitations of crime fiction introduces discourses not usually associated with the genre, such as folk tales, the Absurd, aspects of comedy derived from Elizabethan theatre, carnival, and the historical novel. The dissertation argues that Himes does not consistently manage to blend all of these elements successfully, and that his final unfinished novel, Plan B, fails to realise the potential of Himes’ subaltern genre. My novel, Black Bush City Limits, is an attempt to create a novel in the subaltern genre I argue Himes experiments with in the Harlem Cycle. In Black Bush City Limits a series of murders take place in and around the Dolmen Irish Centre in North London. Mick Kavanagh, a worker at the Centre, investigates these murders. His story is interrupted by extracts from a tranche of letters sent to him by his dying uncle in Ireland. These are by his Victorian forebear, Margaret Kavanagh, alive at the time of the Famine in Ireland. As the novel progresses the significance of these letters becomes apparent, and the two stories are gradually brought together. My dissertation contains a concluding chapter in which I trace where my own novel applies lessons learned from Himes’ example, and where I depart from him.

Abstract

The temperatures of giant-planet upper atmospheres at mid- to low latitudes are measured to be hundreds of degrees warmer than simulations based on solar heating alone can explain (1-4). Modelling studies that focus on additional sources of heating have been unable to resolve this major discrepancy. Equatorward transport of energy from the hot auroral regions was expected to heat the low latitudes, but models have demonstrated that auroral energy is trapped at high latitudes, a consequence of the strong Coriolis forces on rapidly rotating planets (3-5). Wave heating, driven from below, represents another potential source of upper-atmospheric heating, though initial calculations have proven inconclusive for Jupiter, largely owing to a lack of observational constraints on wave parameters (6,7). Here we report that the upper atmosphere above Jupiter's Great Red Spot-the largest storm in the Solar System-is hundreds of degrees hotter than anywhere else on the planet. Abstract

Objectives ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) can affect all age groups. We aimed to show that differences in disease presentation and 6 month outcome between younger- and older-onset patients are still incompletely understood. Methods We included patients enrolled in the Diagnostic and Classification Criteria for Primary Systemic Vasculitis (DCVAS) study between October 2010 and January 2017 with a diagnosis of AAV. We divided the population according to age at diagnosis: Results A total of 1338 patients with AAV were included: 66% had disease onset at Conclusion Within 6 months of diagnosis of AAV, patients >65 years of age display a different pattern of organ involvement and an increased risk of significant damage and mortality compared with younger patients.

Abstract

Face-to-face outreach activities with scientific researchers provide schools with tangible role models, real world context for the curriculum, and a unique shared experience for groups of students. Moving from face-to-face to online engagement at short notice represents a unique challenge for the continuation of many outreach activities. The development, logistics, and feedback for a new series of live virtual sessions between university-based researchers and secondary schools are described here. Stories from the Lab was developed and run with science teachers during the initial phase of the COVID-19 lockdown in Ireland. In addition to the benefits afforded to teachers and students, it also provided the researchers with suitable work experience and peer-learning as part of their structured Ph.D. program.

Abstract

Background The disproportionately high death rate of nursing home (NH) residents from COVID-19 in many countries, including Ireland, has focussed attention on infection prevention and control, including the built environment, in nursing homes. This has been a poorly researched topic to date, and we undertook a systematic review of evidence for architectural design measures which support infection control and pandemic preparedness. Methods Databases were screened for keywords related to NHs, built environment, infection prevention and control, and COVID-19; relevant papers were uploaded onto Covidence and screened for relevance. Data extracted from included articles was tabulated under 8 specific aspects of the built environment. Results Of 17 papers included in the final analysis, four studies found that larger nursing homes carried an increased risk of COVID-19 infection. Crowding in NHs was also a risk factor for infection, with a high crowding index associated with COVID-19 infection in five studies. Green House care homes, which are based on small clusters of domestic dwellings, fared better than traditional NHs. Two papers found an association between the location of NHs and the risk of COVID-19 infection, with urban NHs and those in areas of high prevalence being more at risk. Two papers identified internal fittings as a target for infection prevention and control. Seven papers highlighted the role of adequate ventilation in NHs in the prevention of spread of COVID-19. Only one paper described easy access to the outdoors as beneficial to infection control. Conclusion Residents of NHs are amongst the most vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. When designing and building NHs, the role of the built environment in controlling the spread of the virus should not be underestimated. This research supported by Science Foundation Ireland.

Abstract

Introduction: Electronic health (eHealth) applications have become a very large repository of health information which informs critical decisions relating to the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of patients. Poor information quality (IQ) within eHealth may compromise patient safety. Evaluation of IQ in eHealth is therefore necessary to promote patient safety. An IQ framework specifies what aspects of information to assess and how to conduct the assessment. This systematic review aims to identify dimensions within existing IQ frameworks in eHealth and develop a new IQ framework for assessment of eHealth. Method and Analysis: We will search EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Maternity and Infant Care, PsycINFO, Global Health, Scopus, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, Health Management Information Consortium and reference lists of relevant publications for articles published in English until November 2018. Studies will be selected by two independent reviewers based on pre-specified eligibility criteria. Two reviewers will independently extract data in each eligible study using a pre-piloted Microsoft Excel data extraction form. Thematic synthesis will be employed to define IQ dimensions and develop a new IQ framework for eHealth. Ethics and Dissemination: Ethical approval is not required for this systematic review as primary data will not be collected. The result of the review will be disseminated through publication in an academic journal and scientific conferences. Abstract

This chapter summarizes our current understanding of the ionosphere of Saturn. We give an overview of Saturn ionospheric science from the Voyager era to the present, with a focus on the wealth of new data and discoveries enabled by Cassini, including a massive increase in the number of electron density altitude profiles. We discuss recent ground-based detection of the effect of "ring rain" on Saturn's ionosphere, and present possible model interpretations of the observations. Finally, we outline current model-data discrepancies and indicate how future observations can help in advancing our understanding of the various controlling physical and chemical processes.

Abstract

H+ 3 has been detected at all of the solar system giant planets aside from Neptune. Current observational upper limits imply that there is far less H+ 3 emission at Neptune than rudimentary modelling would suggest. Here, we explore via modelling a range of atmospheric conditions in order to find some that could be consistent with observational constraints. In particular, we consider that the upper atmosphere might be much cooler than it was during the 1989 Voyager 2 encounter, and we examine the impact of an enhanced influx of external material that could act to reduce H+ 3 density. Resulting ionosphere models that are consistent with existing H+ 3 observational constraints have an exospheric temperature of 450K or less, 300K lower than the Voyager 2 value. Alternatively, if a topside CO influx of 2 × 108 cm-2 s-1 is imposed, the upper atmospheric temperature can be higher, up to 550 K. The potential cooling of Neptune's atmosphere is relevant for poorly understood giant planet thermospheric energetics, and would also impact aerobreaking manoeuvers for any future spacecraft. Such a large CO influx, if present, could imply Triton is a very active moon with prominent atmospheric escape, and/or that Neptune's rings significantly modify its upper atmosphere, and the introduction of so much exogenic material would complicate interpretation of the origin of species observed in Neptune's lower atmosphere. 48. Two-tone detectives: cross-cultural crime in Chester Himes' Harlem Cycle novels [and] Black Bush City Limits

Abstract

This thesis comprises a dissertation, ‘Two-Tone Detectives: Cross-Cultural Crime in Chester Himes’ Harlem Cycle Novels’; and Black Bush City Limits, a novel set amongst the ‘murphoisie’ of Irish London. \ud \ud The focus of the dissertation is an exploration of Himes’ expansion of the terms of the crime novel to countenance the broader theme of crimes against humanity, specifically slavery and its legacy in the United States of America following Emancipation in 1865. The dissertation argues that Himes takes a subaltern genre and by means of resisting the formulaic limitations of crime fiction introduces discourses not usually associated with the genre, such as folk tales, the Absurd, aspects of comedy derived from Elizabethan theatre, carnival, and the historical novel. The dissertation argues that Himes does not consistently manage to blend all of these elements successfully, and that his final unfinished novel, Plan B, fails to realise the potential of Himes’ subaltern genre.\ud My novel, Black Bush City Limits, is an attempt to create a novel in the subaltern genre I argue Himes experiments with in the Harlem Cycle. In Black Bush City Limits a series of murders take place in and around the Dolmen Irish Centre in North London. Mick Kavanagh, a worker at the Centre, investigates these murders. \ud His story is interrupted by extracts from a tranche of letters sent to him by his dying uncle in Ireland. These are by his Victorian forebear, Margaret Kavanagh, alive at the time of the Famine in Ireland. As the novel progresses the significance of these letters becomes apparent, and the two stories are gradually brought together. My dissertation contains a concluding chapter in which I trace where my own novel applies lessons learned from Himes’ example, and where I depart from him.
